Abstract:
In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, before political parties began to emerge, the chief weapon of the nationalist movement in West Africa was the newspaper press. As the only significant vehicle of public opinion, it assumed the role of opposition to the colonial government, which sought to quell its vigour and stifle its voice by restictive legislation. This study places the rise of the newspaper industry in historical context, examines the changing ideas and attitudes of the newspapers, and evaluates the effectiveness of press criticism (Klappentext)
