Abstract: Lina Fruzzetti and Ákos Östör began a major film project in 2001, documenting the revival of an ancient tradition in India scroll painting and the singing of stories depicted in the scrolls. The result was the award winning film Singing Pictures, released in 2006. The current film is a follow-up to the previous one and deals with the life and work of a painter, composer, singer, well known in rural West Bengal, as a poet and mystic of legendary proportions. Dukhushyam is a charismatic figure, one who has departed from convention in many ways, most importantly in encouraging women to take up the traditional craft of scroll painting and musical composition pursued almost exclusively by men before. Singing Pictures was about the trials and ultimate triumph of 15 women in the village of Naya, all of them his students, who formed a cooperative to practice the ancient craft of painting scrolls, composing and performing the songs accompanying the scrolls. In a series of edited sequences the new film chronicles Dukhushyam's vision of the decline and rebirth of his art; his tolerant Sufi Muslim spirituality; his engagement with Hindus, Muslims and the modern world; his encyclopedic knowledge of changing musical and painting histories and techniques; the influence of his beliefs on his way of life, and his teachings for future generations of painters and singers in his community.

Abstract: Caodaists worship the left eye as an Asian synthesis of eastern and western traditions. In this film, they tell their stories of exile, anti-colonial struggle, and building immigrant congregations in California. Footage of rituals and temples, and archival images combine to provide a personal perspective on a largely unknown mystical tradition. Older religious leaders tell how this new faith emerged in colonial Saigon in the 1920s and was soon followed by one in four people in southern Vietnam.

Abstract: Kantata Takwa was originally the name of a collaborative group of performers, which included musician Iwan Fals, his band, poet W.S. Rendra and his theatre group. In 1991, Kantata Takwa performed in a huge concert, singing songs about the oppressiveness of Soeharto's new order regime. Live footage of this performance is intercut with artists' interviews, and a loose narrative of a people who are ultimately killed by their oppressors. Due to its political content, Kantata Takwa was 18 years in the making, and only released in 2008. Abstract: For twenty years, Camh has lived in North Vietnam, unable to return to his home in the south, a small fishing village where his wife waits for him. She has been a guerrilla fighter for the triumphant communist forces, and has made a living selling food in the market. She is happy to reunite with her husband until she learns that he has married a young woman in the north and has a child by her. The love triangle becomes more complicated: Huy, a man who has lost a leg is in love with Troa, who does not return his affection, and there is Hoa, a young woman who has lost both legs and who is in love with him. All of the characters' emotional injuries are as deep as those of Huy and Hoa, but they behave with great kindness towards one another. The movie was made for $36,000, but the lack of special effects allows us to concentrate on the difficulties of reunification and of finding both political and psychic peace. Winner of national prizes - Golden Lotus for Best Picture, Best Director, Best actress, Asia Pacific Film Festival for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Film, and Special Prize, Amiens Int'l Film Festival.

Abstract: Set in a rice-growing village in Vietnam, this is a tale of crossroads where stories flow together like small rivers of sorrow. 17-year-old Nham has left school to care for his widowed mother, his little sister Minh, and his sister-in-law Ngu. Ngu, whose husband left to work in a coal mine five years ago and has only come home twice for a few days, lives in daily sadness and with a deep longing for him and a complete life. Nham and his family are visited by Quyen, who has come from America to revisit the village where she was raised by her aunt, Nham's relative. Quyen shares her nostalgia for her childhood with Nham as she remembers the places and the life she left before leaving her bad marriage. As Nham befriends her, his sexuality is awakened by her attractive personality and vivacious good looks. Ngu sees this attention being paid to Quyen by Nham and harbors a quiet jealousy. As Nham opens to his sexual feelings, his embarrassment drives him from Quyen but his sexuality is further awakened by innocent comfort given to Ngu. Nostalgia for the Countryside sweeps us through strong emotions as we experience the characters' heartbreaks and sorrows.

Abstract: Literally translated, the title means 'The Moon Pierced by Wild Grass,' and the film tells the story of the relationship between an aged traditional song teacher named Waluyo, his folk music disciple Ilalang (who has to cope with memories of his abusive father) and the lovely dancer Bulan, who Ilalang has loved for a long time. The feature is set in Solo, where the vestiges of feudal Javanese culture can still be found, and gamelan music is heard throughout. It is an intensely emotional meditation upon the relationship between the generations and the role of music in the search for recovery from a traumatic past and for identity in an uncertain present. Director Garin Nugroho, who has described himself as 'a Javanese living amidst multiculturalism,' and who celebrates Indonesian cultural diversity in such films as A Poet, here explores Javanese culture. He sees this film as 'encompassing at the same time refinement and cruelty, softness and tyranny, and a beauty based on feudalism.' Awards/Festivals: Best Director Award, Nantes International Film Festival. Special Jury Prize at the Nantes Three Continent Film Festival.

Abstract: Based on the novel by Prafulla Roy, Charachar (Shelter of the Wings) revolves around the film's protagonist Lakha, who comes from a family of bird catchers. Each day Lakha traps birds and sells them to Shashmal, the local dealer who in turn sells them to wealthy people who live in the city. Unfortunately, before they are sold, many of the birds die. Despite being in desperate need of the money he makes from the birds, Lakha's deep love for them inspires him to let many go free. Frustrated by her husband's lack of ambition and his obsession with the birds, Lakha's wife Sari has an affair with another bird catcher. This beautifully told narrative reveals the connection between humans and the natural world. Keywords: Ethnology ; Whaling ; Lamalera (Indonesia) Social life and customs. ; Canada ; Documentary films.
Abstract: The Whale Hunters of Lamalera was filmed over a period of four weeks during June 1987. Lamalera is a village which is perched on the rocky slopes of an active volcano on the southern coast of the island of Lembata, in Nusa Tenggara Timur in eastern Indonesia. An anonymous Portuguese document of 1624 describes the islanders as hunting whales with harpoons for their oil, and implies that they collected and sold ambergris. This report confirms that whaling took place in the waters of the Suva Sea at least two centuries before the appearance of American and English whaling ships at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The film follows the daily life of the villagers of Lamalera, a community of about 1500 people. The Christian Mission has been in place in the community for a hundred years, schools have been established and a training workshop teaches carpentry. It is a fishing village in a region where most communities support themselves by agriculture. Lamalera has very little productive land, so the villagers have to fish in order to survive. Their preferred quarry is sperm whale. Catching sperm whale with hand-thrown harpoons from small open boats powered by muscle and palm-leaf sail is no easy task, and the hunt is by no means uneven between man and whale. The tail flukes of a whale can smash the timbers of the boats and many boats are temporarily disabled by their prey. Harpooners have been disabled and killed. But the attraction of the whale is its size. The flesh of the whale (and shark and manta ray) is cut into strips and sun dried in the village. The meat is then carried to small markets where it is bartered with mountain villagers. One strip of dried fish or meat is equivalent to twelve ears of maize, twelve bananas, twelve pieces of dried sweet potatoes, twelve sections of sugar cane, or twelve sirih peppers plus twelve pinang nuts. Commercial whaling is banned throughout much of the world, but subsistence whaling is permitted by International Whaling Commission regulations in Alaska, the USA, the USSR and Greenland. Indonesia is not, however, a signatory to the IWC. Seven whales were caught in Lamalera in 1987.
