Kurzfassung: Amin is the story of an ancient musical tradition and one man's struggle to preserve it. It is told using a unique approach to documentary storytelling that challenges the boundaries of fiction and reality. Amin Aghaie is a young modern nomad from the south of Iran. He has dedicated his life to preserving, documenting and teaching the unique musical tradition of his people, the Qashqai tribe, a tradition on the verge of extinction. Despite the fact that Amin's family face steep financial and cultural obstacles, they are devoted to their art and culture and express that by supporting the work of their talented musician son. Every summer, Amin travels to remote towns and villages to record the music of the surviving masters whose numbers decline each year. His nomadic family sell their meager belongings to help support their son's education in performance and ethnomusicology at Tchaikovsky's Conservatory in Kiev, Ukraine, but it is not enough. Amin, desperate to finish his academic education, sells his violins one at a time just to pay for his tuition. In southeast Côte d'Ivoire, some Akan communities still make contact with the spirits through Komians or animistic priests who go into a trance and are possessed by the spirits of the Forest and the Waters. In Return to the Land of Souls, Yéo Douley, a disciple of Jean Marie Addiaffi, will set out on a journey to visit his master's grave and carry out a ritual libation. On his travel, he will attend the initiation rites of three people chosen by the spirits and witness one of them proclaimed as the new Komian, or high animistic priest.

Kurzfassung: Shot in Cameroon and Brussels, Je ne suis pas moi-même examines the complex network surrounding the international market of African antiquities, and the contradictions in a European art market hungry for new tribal objects. Where do the African masks come from? What journey do these masks make before their unveiling in the windows of the biggest galleries or art collections in Europe? Who determines the economic and aesthetic value of these objects now that colonialism is supposedly dead? And then there's a continent called Africa, in need of economic resources and therefore willing to sell its cultural heritage or, if need be, to fake it. The authenticity of the objects becomes blurred when the people that once adored them start to sell them.

Kurzfassung: This is the story of that brass band, a brass band that isn't at all like a military band. It's a dancing brass band, an African brass band, that accompanies all the big and little moments of life: national festivals, religious ceremonies, funerals, fetes and celebrations, a musical game involving a football, tunes from the famous Mapuka dance, or the experimental use of sacred drums together with the brass band. A lively debate between the musicians, in which a sense of humor is clearly present, as they examine fundamental questions about their tradition and its transformations in the context of the life of people today. This film was shot in July and August 2002, a few weeks before the outbreak of civil war in the Côte d'Ivoire.

In the capital Sanaa, the women, although at first sight appearing to all be wearing but black, distinguish themselves one from the other through this diversity. Each veil not only carries its own symbolism, but the variety of ways of wearing each becomes a form of expression. It becomes a game of what one hides and what one unveils. Kurzfassung: Filmmaker Dai Sil Kim-Gibson explores the aftermath of the 1992 LA Civil Unrest in her film WET SAND. Her groundbreaking 1993 documentary SA-I-GU stands as one of the crucial texts to offer a Korean American perspective on the events surrounding the Los Angeles riots – an invaluable discussion tool for promoting better understanding of the socio-political factors that played into one of the grimmest moments in United States race relations. With WET SAND, Kim-Gibson revisits Los Angeles to learn what changes have occurred since then, only to discover that living conditions have deteriorated and that few remedies have been administered to the communities most stricken. Through interviews with a multi-ethnic set of first-hand witnesses, this essential follow-up probes deeper into the racial and economic issues that not only shaped the climate of 1992 Los Angeles, but continue to affect all Americans today.

In Europe, most North African families will include someone who is undergoing this kind of disorder, with diverse manifestations (asthma, paralysis, epilepsy, "crises", sterility etc.) which, if left untreated, may be extremely serious and destructive, causing suffering and delinquent behaviour. All able-bodied family members participate in the production, including a blind son, whom we see hitching a ride to market with his sister to purchase the sheep skins and wood planks used in the instrument's manufacture. A doctor visits the father's younger 3-1/2 year-old son, who has also lost his eyesight, and offers this advice 'Pray to God. Give to charity. Have ceremonies and have a dervish play the daf for him.' The greater part of the film focuses on the laborious work involved in the fabrication of daf and culminates in a rousing ritual for the ailing boy. The accomplished camerawork takes advantage of the surrounding scenery and local color. Sensitive individuals are warned of a brief but graphic segment of sheep being slaughtered.

Kurzfassung: Filmed in a woman's restroom located in a public park in Iran's metropolitan center of Tehran, this documentary explodes Western stereotyping of women in Iran. The elder who runs the washroom offers a shoulder to cry on or tough love in a place where women, many of them especially marginalized because they are prostitutes, addicts or runaways, feel safe enough to remove their veils, and draw on cigarettes and their opinions on a wide range of subjects that men cannot hear them speaking about: sex, family abuse, relationships, drugs, religion and self-mutilation. The director (and admired actress) supplies the audience with an unflinching, detailed examination of the lives of the women who use the restroom as a gathering place. Mary Kerr, Programming Director of Silverdocs, highly praises the way private conversations establish community: "Never before have I been so surprised by a film's candor and honesty. The Ladies' Room is an amazing testament to Mahnaz Afzali's restraint as a filmmaker as she steps into the background and lets these women, who are second-class citizens in Iran, be themselves - totally unrestrained and surprisingly progressive." Kurzfassung: Part 1: A fascinating documentation of the traditional musical culture of the 'Are'are people of the Solomon Islands, in the South-Western Pacific. The three LP records published after a first one-year field-research in 1969-70 were a phenomenal surprise (Garfias) as they revealed a completely unknown music (outside of the Solomon Islands) of an exceptional beauty and complexity in its instrumental and vocal polyphonies. It seemed to the researcher an absolute necessity to document visually what had been published on sound recordings, showing in detail all the playing techniques, body movements of performers, and spatial coordination of music ensembles and dancers. The documentary consists of a comprehensive inventory of all the twenty musical genres of the 'Are'are people and is structured according to native classification, along with explanations by master musician 'Irisipau.
Kurzfassung: Parts 2 & 3: For the 'Are'are people of the Solomon Islands, the most valued music is that of the four types of panpipe ensembles. With the exception of slit drums, all musical instruments are made of bamboo; therefore the general word for instruments and the music performed with them is bamboo ('au). This film shows the making of panpipes, from the cutting the bamboo in the forest to the making of the final bindings. The most important part of the work consists in shaping each tube to its necessary length. Most 'Are'are panpipe makers measure the length of old instruments before they shape new tubes. Master musician 'Irisipau, surprisingly, takes the measure using his body, and adjusts the final tuning by ear. For the first time we can see here how the instruments and their artificial equiheptatonic scale—seven equidistant degrees in an octave—are practically tuned.

Kurzfassung: Director Lee Hyeong-pyo tells us in the opening narration that his film will reflect 'a time when the old age and the new stand shoulder to shoulder.' Kim Hak-gyu, a doctor of Oriental medicine, spends his days hanging out with two friends -- a fortuneteller and a realtor. The three conduct their business from Kim's home in a small alley of traditional Korean homes. Ordinary life happens around this trio, as does trouble. Kim's family problems take center stage throughout most of the film. His stubbornness and arrogance create conflicts for his family and his friends. Across the street from his home is the modern office of Choi Du-Yeol, a doctor of Western medicine, who shares a mutual attraction with Kim's daughter, a widow. Choi knows that Kim frowns on his Western practice as well as his interest in his daughter. Kim's son, Hyeon-gyu, is dating a woman who becomes pregnant. When the two decide to get married, Kim objects and kicks his son out of the house, which stirs other troubles. The trio of friends cheats a couple who want their fortune read out of their wishes as well as their money. And when Choi decides to run for city council, Kim hears of this and decides to run against him despite the warning of his family that this will wreak havoc on them. Lessons come hard for this family as it makes its way toward the modern world. But as in real life, sweetness mingles with the bitter as the meaning and value of family and friends emerge.

Kurzfassung: In a remote fishing village, life is simple and tranquil. Dance and song open the film as the fishermen sing of their good harvest. Their cherished traditions keep the call of modern Seoul at bay, but not for In-soon, the daughter of fisherman Chun-san. She wants to join a friend in Seoul (Ok-boon, an independent woman) to make money and go to school. When her father is lost at sea, the debt he owes to a village lender falls upon In-soon, as her bereaved mother takes more cash from the lender who wants the daughter as his concubine. However, the lender's son, Cheol-soo, woos her into going with him to Seoul where he says she can find a job. Instead, he keeps her for himself and takes her purity. In-soon's friend Ok-boon knows Cheol-soo's ways and helps In-soon to escape. This sets In-soon on a course that threatens to destroy her life. Fisherman's Fire is one of the films from the late Japanese colonial period that the Korean Film Archive (KOFA) obtained through the China Film Archive (CFA) in 2004. Along with Homeless Angel (Jib-eobsneun cheonsa), Story of Sim-chung (Sim Cheongjeon), and Military Train (Gun-yong-yeolcha), it is one of just four films from the 1930s whose existence in Korea has been verified.

Kurzfassung: In 1937, as the Japan-China war intensified, and the Japanese military occupied Chosun (old Korea), this film emerged as a pro-Japanese government-sponsored film. A tale of espionage driven by love, Military Train centers on the friendship between two young Korean men, Jeom-yong and Won-jin. Won-jin is in love with Jeom-yong's sister and wants to free her from her miserable, degrading hostess job, but it will take money to extricate herself from work that has left her in debt to her employer. When a Chinese spy approaches Won-jin and seduces him with the cash he needs, Won-jin divulges secret information about the military train, secrets that he gains from spying on Jeom-yong who drives the military train. After Won-jin leaks the information, he is pricked with guilt and this leads to his trying to undo what he has tragically set in motion. The film was released to coincide with the mobilization of military troops soon after the start of the Sino-Japanese war and to promote the importance of the military mission of the railroad to transport the troops. Along with Homeless Angel (Jib-eobsneun cheonsa), Story of Sim-chung (Sim Cheongjeon), and Fisherman's Fire (Eohwa), it is one of just four films from the 1930s whose existence in Korea has been verified.

Kurzfassung: Before World War II, modern Seoul in the thirties was an urban landscape of cafes, hotels, and show rooms, presented compellingly (and clearly under Japanese colonial governance). A vain housewife, drawn to such places, desires a life free from traditional chores and wifely obligations. She rejects her bird in a cage status and is expelled from her home by her husband Seon-yong. Abandoning her young daughter Jeong-hee, Ae-soon moves into a hotel with her lover Chang-geon, while her heartbroken daughter is encouraged by her father to go on with life. Ae-soon finds out that her lover is not rich at all but is a laundry worker. When he robs the hotel, Ae-soon turns him in. She then meets a fate that turns her life to darkness. One of the featured films in The Past Unearthed: The Second Encounter/Collection of Chosun Films in the 1930s, a boxed set, Sweet Dream is the earliest surviving Korean film, now restored.
