Abstract: Tässä profiilissa esitetään tiivis ja politiikkaan keskittyvä yleiskatsaus Suomen terveydentilaan ja terveydenhuoltojärjestelmään osana laajempaa State of Health in the EU -aloitteen maakohtaisten terveysprofiilien sarjaa. Siinä esitetään tiivis analyysi, joka kattaa seuraavat keskeiset näkökohdat: Suomen nykyinen terveydentila, terveyden taustatekijät, erityisesti käyttäytymiseen liittyvät riskitekijät, Suomen terveydenhuoltojärjestelmän organisaatio sekä arviointi terveydenhuoltojärjestelmän tehokkuudesta, saatavuudesta ja joustavuudesta. Lisäksi vuoden 2023 painoksessa esitetään temaattinen osio mielenterveyden ja siihen liittyvien palvelujen tilasta Suomessa. Tämä profiili on OECD:n ja Euroopan terveydenhuoltojärjestelmien ja -politiikkojen seurantakeskuksen yhteistyössä Euroopan komission kanssa toteuttama yhteistyöhanke.

Abstract: Syöpäprofiileissa kuvataan EU:n 27 jäsenvaltion sekä Islannin ja Norjan vahvuudet, haasteet ja erityiset toiminta-alat, jotka ohjaavat niiden investointeja ja toimia EU:n, kansallisella ja alueellisella tasolla EU:n syöväntorjuntasuunnitelman puitteissa. Kussakin maakohtaisessa syöpäprofiilissa esitetään lyhyt yhteenveto seuraavista: kansallinen syöpätaakka; syövän riskitekijät (joissa keskitytään käyttäytymiseen ja ympäristöön liittyviin riskitekijöihin); (varhaista havaitsemista koskevat ohjelmat; syövän hoidon suorituskyky (jossa keskitytään saatavuuteen, hoidon laatuun, kustannuksiin ja COVID-19:n vaikutukseen syövän hoitoon).

Abstract: The Finnish novelist Kaarlo (Kalle) Alvar Päätalo’s (1919–2000) main work, the Iijoki series, consists of 26 novels (comprising ca. 17 000 pages) and was written in 1971–1998. In this book the text corpus in Kielipankki concerning Päätalo’s works is introduced to the readers, as well as the possibilities of digital text mining. This book includes scientific articles concerning the works of Kalle Päätalo. It also gives ideas for the research that can be carried out in the future. The authors of this book are researchers in the fields of history, linguistics and literature, respectively. The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. The possibilities for future research seem to be quite plentiful

Abstract: This edited book is the third in a series of yearbooks that introduces the principles and applicability of the method of empathy-based stories. The book presents ten empirical studies which all use this method as a tool for data collection. In addition, the work examines the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories as a method and as part of qualitative research. The research articles in the book provide a current overview of the change in different work and operating environments. These environments include various educational institutions from elementary school to universities, social media, and human resource management. Studies examine the social inclusion, participation and agency of pupils, students, young people, and professionals, as well as the professional and ethical challenges of those working in new environments. The method of empathy-based stories is used to observe, for example, university students’ interpretations of involvement in the curriculum process, pupils' views on co-teaching, different forms of agency of young people who experience sexual harassment online, and the subjectivity of recruiters and the reasons for recruitment choices. Methodologically, the book focuses on the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories and considers the characteristics of the method among qualitative research methods. Reflecting on the research articles, the work discusses what kind of requirements and challenges the method poses for both the researcher and the respondents. The book provides guidelines for evaluating the reliability of the method of empathy-based stories, while participating also in a general discussion of the reliability, potential, and limitations of qualitative research. The book indicates how the method of empathy-based stories can be applied to a wide variety of research in different contexts. The strength of the method is its ability to utilize the respondents' imagination, thus providing the researchers with opportunities to find new perspectives and invent propositions. Abstract: Kasvatusinstituutiot peruskoulusta yliopistoon ovat jatkuvan muutoksen keskiössä. Globaalit ja paikalliset yhteiskunnalliset muutokset, kuten esimerkiksi sosiaalisen median levittäytyminen osaksi arkea tai synnytyssairaaloiden keskittäminen, asettavat ammattilaisille uusia osaamisvaatimuksia sekä eettisiä haasteita. Kokoomateoksen kymmenessä tutkimusartikkelissa tarkastellaan eläytymismenetelmän avulla näiden muuttuvien ympäristöjen vaikutusta niissä toimivien ihmisten arkeen. Tutkimusartikkeleissa käsitellään esimerkiksi oppilaiden näkemyksiä yhteisopettajuudesta, kätilöiden osaamista, rekrytoijien ammattitaitoa sekä seksuaalista häirintää verkossa kohtaavien nuoren toimijuutta. Menetelmällisen painotuksensa ansiosta teosta voi hyödyntää myös eläytymismenetelmän soveltamistapoja kuvaavana oppikirjana. The fourteen peer-reviewed case studies in the volume offer new insights from the fields of visual cultural studies, art history and gender studies. Abstract: Tämän tutkimuksen pääkysymys muotoutui tutkimusprosessin kuluessa kaksisuuntaiseksi. Ensinnäkin tavoitteena on tarkastella raviurheilun, hevospelaamisen (hevosiin liittyvän rahasta pelaamisen) ja koko hevostalouden (hevoseen ja/tai sen toimintaympäristöön rakentuvan ja liittyvän monimuotoisen toiminnan) yhteyteen muotoutuvia kulttuurisia merkityksiä ja kenttiä sekä journalismin roolia merkitysten ja kenttien kehityksessä. Näin pyrin rakentamaan yleiskuvan muuttuvista merkitysympäristöistä hevosväen kulttuurisina toimintaympäristöinä. Toisena tavoitteenani on tarkastella perusteltujen tapaustutkimusten ja 2017 toteutetun suomalaisen rahapelikenttämuutosten analyysin kautta sitä, millaisia konkreettisia julkisia kiistoja ja merkityskamppailuja hevospeleistä käytiin suomalaisessa yleisjulkisuudessa. Näin työni pyrkimyksenä on siis myös kuvata, miten raviurheilu- ja hevos( peli)innon tartuttama väestönosa toimi ja selviytyi hevostalouskentän julkisuudessa, jossa kansalaisyhteiskunta ja julkinen valta mittelevät voimiaan taistossa hevostalouden merkityksistä, funktioista ja hevospelituotoista. Kolmessa pääluvussa (2–4) rakennan narratiivisella otteella hevostalouden, hevospelaamisen ja hevosiin liittyvän journalismin historiaa. Luvussa 2 keskityn hevostalouden ympärille kehkeytyvien kulttuuristen merkitysten ja kenttien sekä niiden kehityksen kuvaamiseen. Luvun 3 keskiössä ovat hevospeleihin kytkeytyvät merkitykset osana suomalaista rahasta pelaamisen kenttää. Luvussa 4 pohdin journalismin ja hevosjournalismin suhdetta sekä hevosjournalismin roolia raviurheilun, hevospelien ja koko hevostalouden kulttuuristen merkitysten ja kenttien muutoksissa. Nämä kolme lukua ovat osa työn empiiristä ulottuvuutta, jossa työstän kokonaiskuvaa siitä, miten puhe raviurheilusta, hevospelaamisesta ja koko hevostaloudesta kulkee rinnan hevosjournalismin kehityksen kanssa. Näiden kolmen pääluvun muodostamaan kontekstiin sijoitan lukujen 6–9 neljä tapaustutkimusta ja luvun 10 analyysin Suomen rahapelikentän rakenteiden muutosprosessista 2010-luvulla. Tapaustutkimukset ja luvun 10 analyysi ovat päälukuja paikallisempia, yksityiskohtaisempia ja ajallisesti tiiviitä yleis- ja hevostalousjulkisuuden välisiä analyyseja. Tapaustutkimukset ja luvun 10 analyysi muodostavat työn toisen empiirisen ulottuvuuden. Päälukuihin 2–4 ovat sijoitettuina myös tutkimukseni teoreettiset ainekset. Ne syntyvät yhtäältä sosiologisista teorioista, jotka jäsentävät luvuissa esiin tulevia historiallisia muutoksia. Ko. sosiologisia teorioita ovat hevostalousluvun (luku 2) teoreettisen taustan muodostavat Pertti Alasuutarin moraali-, suunnittelu- ja kilpailutalouden sekä Zygmunt Baumanin raskaan ja notkean modernin käsitteet kuin myös näiden käsitteistöjen taustalla olevat teoreettiset rakennelmat. Toisaalta teoreettinen tausta muodostuu diskurssien ja merkitysjärjestelmien analyysiin virittyneistä käsitteistä ja niitä koskevista teorioista. Näitä ovat työssäni Stuart Hallin sekä Ernesto Laclaun ja Chantal Mouffen artikulaation käsite ja sitä koskevat teoriat, jotka muodostavat hevospelaamisen luvun (luku 3) teoreettisen taustan. Kolmas teoreettinen astinlauta on ajassa muuttuva, narratiivinen mutta eri instituutioiden, toimijoiden ja kenttien välisiä suhteita tietyissä tilanteissa pysäytyskuvan omaisesti jäsentävä Pierre Bourdieun kenttäteoria. Se muodostaa journalismi- ja hevosjournalismiluvun (luku 4) teoreettisen taustan. Tutkimukseni empiirinen ydin on neljän tapaustutkimuksen sekä vuoden 2017 peliyhtiöfuusion analyyseissä (luvut 6–10). Tapaukset ja 2010-luvun rahapelikentän muutosprosessi kuvaavat hevostalouden ja eritoten raviurheilun suuria murroskohtia: rahasta pelaamisen tulo raveihin 1928, hevosurheilun ja totalisaattorin murroskausi 1955–1966, ravikriisi 1982 – taistelu hevospelikentän peleistä ja rahavirroista –, seitsemän päivän mediasota 1998, jolloin hevosväki käytti tilattuja julkisuudenhallintapalveluja rahapelikentän julkisuustaistelussa ja vuoden 2017 peliyhtiöfuusio. Tapaustutkimusten analyysien pääasiallisina aineksina ovat lehtiartikkelit (614 kappaletta) ja päämenetelmänä mediamonitorointi, johon liittyy määrällinen sisällönerittely. Lehtiaineisto luokitellaan neljän ulottuvuuden perusteella: puhujarakenne, kohde, ensisijainen kanta hevospelaamisen funktioon ja verottamiseen sekä väittämäanalyysi. Vuoden 2017 peliyhtiöfuusioon käyn käsiksi tilastoanalyysin ja aihetta käsitelleiden lehtiartikkeleiden lähiluvun avulla. Niin tapaustutkimuksia kuin koko työtä jäsentävä jännite rakentuu kansalaisyhteiskunnan ja julkisen vallan välille. Raviurheilu ja urheiluhevosten kasvatus ponnistavat kansalaisyhteiskunnasta, kun taas ravien ja rahasta pelaamisen sääntely sekä hevosjalostuksen funktioiden määrittely sijoittuvat pääosin valtiovallan sektorille. Tämän jännitteen elementit saavat ilmiasunsa myös työni tuloksissa, ja keskeisin tulos kytkeytyy juuri kansalaisyhteiskunnan ja julkisen vallan taistoon hevoskentän herruudesta. Työssäni nousee esille valtiovallan ja hevoskentän suhteen tiiviys verrattuna muihin kansalaisyhteiskunnan tavarankierron ja yhteiskunnallisen työn alueisiin. Tuo suhteen tiiviys ja hevoskenttään – urheiluun, jalostukseen ja peleihin – kytkeytyvät (hevostalous)poliittiset intohimot ovat sitoneet kansalaisyhteiskunnan hevosväen ja julkisen vallan toimijat tiukoin sitein toisiinsa. Valtiovalta on ollut suurimman osan aikaa hevostalouden merkitysten ja koko hevosalan kentän herra. Työssäni analysoimieni aineistojen perusteella näyttää myös siltä, ettei EU-Suomen yhä globalisoituvammassa maailmassakaan valtio ole hellittämässä raviuriheilun, hevospelien ja koko hevostalouden vallan valtikasta – pikemminkin päinvastoin: 2010-luvun taitteen hevostalous ja sen keskeiset osa-alueet raviurheilu ja hevospelaaminen ovat jo pääosin siirtyneet kansalaisyhteiskunnan sektorilta takaisin valtiovallan tiukkaan ohjaukseen. Julkinen valta hallitsi suomalaista hevostaloutta liki suvereenisti 1960-luvulle saakka.Jalostuksen kentällä se määritteli, minkälaisia hevosia piti kasvattaa. Suosimalla työhevosta valtiovalta jätti raviurheilun pääosin kansalaisyhteiskunnalle. Aina 1960-luvun puoliväliin saakka raviurheilun nousua padottiin myös vedonlyöntisäännöksillä. Pitämällä pelaajien osuudet hevospeleissä alhaisina ne ensinnäkin estivät totopelin suosion kasvua. Toiseksi kohdistamalla valtiolle hevospeleistä kertyneet varat vain (työ)hevosjalostuksen edistämiseen myöhästyi 1900-luvun ravirataverkon modernisointi ja ylipäätään Suomen raviurheilun julkinen edistäminen verrattuna läntisen Euroopan kehitykseen. Kansalaisyhteiskunnan rooli voimistui 1970-luvun alussa niin raviurheilun, hevosjalostuksen kuin hevospelien kentällä. Jalostuksen valvonta ja ohjaus siirtyivät valtion virkamiehiltä kansalaisyhteiskunnan ja julkisen vallan hybridille, Suomen Hippokselle. 1970-luvun alun säädösmuutokset mahdollistivat hevospeleistä valtiolle kertyneiden varojen käytön myös raviurheilun edistämiseen. Samalla vuosikymmenellä Suomen Hippos toi hevospelivalikoimaan myös valtakunnallisia pelituotteita. Kuitenkin jo 1980-luvun alkupuolella käynnistyi kehitys, jossa valtiovalta otti sektori sektorilta aiempaa merkittävämmän roolin hevoskentällä. Tuo kehitys huipentui peliyhtiöfuusioon 2017, josta lähtien valtio on taas noussut liki hegemoniseen asemaan koko hevoskentällä: Hevospelaajat ja hevospelit ovat tiukasti valtion peliyhtiön Veikkauksen hallussa, ja raviradoista on tullut valtionavun varassa toimivia organisaatioita, joiden pääasiallinen tehtävä on tuottaa pelikohteita valtion peliyhtiölle. Näyttää siis siltä, että kansalaisyhteiskunnan ja siihen kytkeytyvien merkitysten kukoistuskausi hevoskentällä oli väliaikainen ilmiö, joka liittyi vahvasti raviurheilun valtakauteen hevosalalla. Sen ensimmäiset merkit ilmenivät jo 1960-luvun lopulla, se oli voimakkaimmillaan raviurheilun suuren nousun aikaan, 1970-luvulta 1990-luvun lamavuosiin, ja kukoistuskausi näytti olevan ohi lähestyttäessä 2020-lukua. Hevostalous-teeman keskeinen huomio on, ettei hevostalouden ja yhteiskunnan kehitystä voi erottaa toisistaan. Hevostalouden kulttuurinen merkitys muuttuu yhteiskunnan muuttuessa, mutta samalla hevostalous osa-alueineen on sosiaalinen käytäntö, joka muuttaa yhteiskuntaa. Hevostalous on näin osa yhteiskuntaa, jossa julkinen valta on kuitenkin kontrolloinut ja yhä kontrolloi lähes kaikkia kansalaisyhteiskunnan hevoskentän alueita. Rahasta pelaamisen teeman keskeisen tuloksen mukaan hevospelipuheen merkittävimmät peruspilarit pysyvät samoina vuosikymmenestä, jopa vuosisadasta toiseen. Puhe hevosiin liittyvistä rahapeleistä on taistelua synnin, rikoksen, moraalin, etiikan ja rahan merkitysten hetteikössä. Toki toimijoiden asemat hevospelikentällä sekä jännitteet ja variaatiot peleihin liitettyjen moraalisten ja eettisten kiinnikkeiden sekä pelaamisesta koituvan rahallisen hyödyn välillä vaihtelevat. Abstract: Aberrations of Reason. Capitalist Rationality and its Critique in Juha Seppälä’s Novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). Juha Seppälä’s early literary works, published in the 1980s and in the early 1990s, usually described spiritually lonely men who suffered from an existential loss of meaning and serious alienation problems in the modern world. After this, Seppälä turned to deal with the transformation of the Finnish way of life and its cultural base, until after the turn of the new millennium he began to critically judge society’s ongoing marketization process. This study analyses his capitalism-critical works, particularly his novels Yhtiökumppanit (The Partners, 2002), Paholaisen haarukka (Devil’s Fork, 2008) and Mr. Smith (2012). These works do not, primarily, consider contemporary market capitalism from a class perspective, although this sort of perspective is also included in them. They are, above all, critical of market capitalist rationality. According to Seppälä, the basic problem of modern economic profit-seeking lies in the fact that in its unchecked form it is largely indifferent with respect to existential, moral, social and ecological values and principles. Free market economy or market capitalism has, therefore, a destructive influence on individuals, communities and ecological systems. The novels at issue emphasize that due to this it is also, in a deeper sense, incapable of producing existentially meaningful ways of life

Abstract: The edited volume Archives and the Cultural Heritage focuses on archives as institutions and to their tense relationship with archives as material. These dynamics are discussed in respect of the past, the present, and the future. The focus lies in the mechanisms the Finnish archive institutions have utilised when taking part in forming the cultural heritage and in debating the importance of the private archives in society. Within social sciences and history from the early 1990s onwards, the effects of globalisation have been seen as a new focal point for research. Momentarily, the archives saw the same paradigm shift as the focus of the archival studies proceeded from state to society. This brought forth the notion that the values of society are reflected in the acquisition of archival material. This archival turn draws attention to the archives as entities formed by cultural practices. The volume discusses cultural heritage within Finnish archives with diverse perspectives and from various time periods. The key concepts are cultural heritage and archives – both as institution and as material. Articles review the formation of archival collections spanning from the 19th to the 21st century and highlight that the archives have never been neutral or objective actors; rather, they have always been an active process of remembering and forgetting, a matter of inclusion and exclusion. The focus is on private archives and on the choices that guided the creation of the archives and the cultural perceptions and power structures associated with them. Although private archives have considerable social and research value, and although their material complements the picture of society provided by documentary data produced by public administrations, they have only risen to the theoretical discussions in the 21st century. The authors consider what has happened before the material ends up in the archive, what happens in the archive and what can be deduced from this. It shows how archival solutions manifest themselves, how they have influenced research and how they still affect it. One of the key questions is whose past has been preserved and whose is deemed worthy of preservation. Under what conditions have the permanently preserved documents been selected and how can they be accessed? In addition, the volume pays attention to whose documents have been ignored or forgotten, as well as to the networks and power of the individuals within the archival institution and to the politics of memory. The Archives and the Cultural Heritage is an opening to a discussion on the mechanisms, practices and goals of Finnish archival activities. It challenges archival organisations to reflect on their own operating models and to make visible their own conscious or unconscious choices. It raises awareness of the formation of the Finnish documentary cultural heritage, produces new information about private archives and participates in the scientific debate on the changing significance of archives in society. Abstract: "This book delves into the societally important questions of auditing, evaluation and control that have changed or are expected to change in the 2020s. Changes in the operating environment are constantly shaping the context and regulatory environment of the industry. At the same time, the perceptions of players in the sector about the most appropriate course of action are evolving. The sector and its operators are experiencing a major turning point in many respects. The coronavirus pandemic is an example of a change that has posed new challenges and societal demands to the audit industry, organizations’ self-regulating mechanisms, and evaluation. The fifteen articles of this book examine the current phenomena of auditing, control and evaluation practically, but they are also firmly based on scientific research information. The collection is multidisciplinary because the questions examined don’t just cross the line between public and private sector, but also between disciplines. Ala ja sen toimijat elävät siis monessa suhteessa voimakkaassa murroksessa. Koronaviruspandemia on esimerkki murroksesta, joka on asettanut tarkastusalan, organisaatioiden sisäisen valvonnan järjestelmät sekä arvioinnin uudenlaisten haasteiden ja yhteiskunnallisten vaatimusten eteen. Tilintarkastuksen, valvonnan ja arvioinnin ajankohtaisia ilmiöitä tarkastellaan teoksen viidessätoista artikkelissa käytännönläheisesti mutta myös vahvasti tieteelliseen tutkimustietoon nojautuen. Abstract: Societal impact is an integral part of academic research today and researchers are expected to share their findings with research participants. Efforts to develop scientific research and science communication from one-way communication towards different forms of co-creation where the researcher and research participants produce knowledge and negotiate about its meaning and applicability through joint actions are in great demand. For the researcher, such developments have brought a new kind of access into the world of research participants and also novel reflections on one’s professional knowledge and identity and their boundaries. This book focuses on the human and social sciences and draws particular attention to the diverse encounters that occur between researchers and research participants at all stages of the research process when studying human subjects and activities. The book presents case studies of applied conversation analysis in a variety of professional contexts. The aim of the book is to shed light on the practices, possibilities, and challenges of applied research within the conversation analytic framework where the research participants’ authentic social situations become the target of the researcher’s detailed analysis. The articles of the book investigate social interaction in occupational health care, mental health rehabilitation, elderly care, welfare education, theatre rehearsals, social circus, military organization, software development, and workplace community break taking. These articles represent applied conversation analysis in different ways. The results of the research have been used in some of the articles, for example, in developing the professional practices of the workplace community whereas in some other articles the whole study has been undertaken collaboratively between researchers and professionals. Each article is divided into two parts: a conventional research report that analyses the patterns of social interaction in a particular professional setting is followed by a story where the authors reflect on how their study originated, how it progressed, and what kinds of encounters and choices it involved. The stories highlighting reciprocal interactions of the researcher and the research participants across the research process bring forth various voices and perspectives that conventionally are not considered as part of the research report. Abstract: Avant-garde in Finland is the first book to provide an overarching introduction to avant-garde art by Finnish artists. The articles in the book discuss the application and development of the cultural ideas of the avant-garde in Finnish art from the early 20th century till the present day. The book focusses on the social, political, and artistic characteristics of avant-garde art and their manifestation in Finnish avant-garde literature, visual arts, architecture, fashion, and music. The book shows the remarkable role of women artists in the development of the Finnish avant-garde. Many artists and groups are presented in the book for the first time. At the same time, the articles highlight connections between well-known Finnish artists and international avant-garde movements that have not been recognized in earlier research. A key theme of the book is the tension between the internationality of avant-garde and the nationalist elements of Finnish culture. Abstract: What is a state? This volume approaches the question from an anthropological perspective, which means that the starting point of the analysis is not the concept of the state, but instead, what kinds of structures the state consists of, what kinds of effects these structures have, and how states are experienced by the people who inhabit, make, enact, and resist them. The volume introduces a contemporary anthropological approach to the study of the state for a Finnish-speaking audience. This new approach examines the state as a diverse, socially and culturally constructed phenomenon that varies in time and place. Additional aims of the volume are to introduce and translate concepts from political anthropology to the Finnish language, and to make anthropological analyses of the state known to other disciplines that study the state and to the general Finnish-speaking public. Covering a wide variety of ethnographic contexts examining both the effects of the state and the state-like effects of other institutions, the volume contains case studies from Brazil, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, Finland, Bolivia, Cuba, Egypt, Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Ghana. Abstract: For the first time worldwide, this collection brings together analyses of the last two centuries of historical change around the shores and drainage basin of Lake Ladoga, Europe’s largest lake. The main focus of the narrative is the Northern Ladoga region, which was a Finnish administrative area between 1812 and 1944. After the Second World War, the entire shoreline of Lake Ladoga was incorporated into the northeast part of Russia’s border region, the Autonomous Republic of Karelia and the Leningrad Province. The main theme uniting this collection is how the relationship between humans and nature is shaped by industrialization and modernization in society. Other key issues include protecting nature and perspectives on particular places and times, which are reflected in the methodological and thematic choices made in this volume. The research framework set by the editor, Professor Maria Lähteenmäki, is the new lakefront history (Finn. uusi rantahistoria), focusing on approaches to environmental, economic and sensory history of lakes. To draw broad conclusions, on the one hand, the multilevel changes on the lakefront cannot be understood without knowledge of the history of the wider drainage basin, and awareness of the geopolitics of the region and the climate changes. On the other hand, the human relationship to natural waters has changed significantly in 200 years. Thinking in terms of economic benefit has gradually given way to principles of sustainable development. Abstract: The present volume is a multidisciplinary collection of research articles exploring language use, language contact and multilingualism in the history of Turku, the first town in Finland, founded around the turn of the fourteenth century. Consisting of an introduction by the editors and nine case studies in the fields of linguistics, history, archeology, and literary and cultural studies, the volume participates in a wider discussion on multilingual communities while offering a closer look into linguistic encounters in Turku and its immediate vicinity. The volume covers the period from the Middle Ages (c. 1100–1500) to the latter half of the twentieth century. Paradigm is a framework of prevalent principles, beliefs, values, and norms, and incorporates ideas about what is correct in terms of theory and methodology. Accordingly, paradigm always leads to struggles of authority in relation to other trends and ways of thinking. This book grapples with the historical, contemporary, and ever-shifting paradigms and methods of cultural research. What was being researched in the early 20th century and how was the research conducted? What happened in the 1960s–1980s in this field of research? What methods do our peers use? What kinds of affiliations and antagonisms emerge with the changing paradigms? And how do the different ’turns’ direct research?

Abstract: The topic of the book is the incremental growth of linguistic knowledge from lexical to structural-cum-textual during the so-called later language development. Language mastery does not presuppose any acquaintance with prescriptive grammar but, instead, concerns the core of language which the so-called consensus principle applies to: the most frequent words and structures are mastered with certainty by everybody, but uncertainty increases as less frequent and more variable phenomena are taken into consideration. It is the goal of the study to make explicit the knowledge that is common to school children of different age groups, and to show how it develops both in its core and in its fringe areas. The mastery of less common aspects exhibits considerable statistical variation. The research embodies methodological pluralism insofar as it has been carried out by means both of the corpus method and the experimental method. Here experimental subsumes writing tasks, paper-and-pencil tests, and behavior under experimental conditions. The amount of participants native in Finnish varies from 300–2000. The book has a bipartite structure: mastery of meanings (Part I), and mastery of forms (Part II)

Abstract: The focus of this research is on Finland’s role in Soviet Union’s calculation of its foreign policy between 1920 and 1930. This was the first decade of both Finnish independence and of Soviet power in Russia. This book answers questions about the objectives of Soviet foreign policy in Finland, on the contacts used by the Soviet legation to obtain information, and on how well the Soviets understood Finland’s objectives. People interested in Finland and in Russian perspectives with regards to foreign policy and neighbouring countries will find much new in this book because it relies on formerly unpublished Russian archival material to form the basis for charting Soviet objectives in Finland. The book shows that the Soviets primarily observed Finland in a larger regional context along with other states on its borders in the Baltic Sea region. The global objectives of the revolution and the Soviet Union, but also the domestic political situation in both countries, are reflected on this framework. The period was characterized by forced collectivization in the Soviet Union and, in Finland, by the rise of the right-wing Lapua Movement that emerged at the onset of the Great Depression, laying the foundations for the most severe crisis in the relations during 1929–1930 when the issues surrounding these events destabilized simultaneously the society and political decision-making in both countries

Abstract: This book [Mediatized power and the return of the political] describes Finnish decision-makers’ relationship with the media. It is based on surveys in 2009 and 2019. In 2009 there were 419 and in 2019 484 respondents, all of them having an influential position in some of the eight societal sectors covered in the study. The results show a moderate change from a consensus-oriented and networking decision-making culture towards a more ideologic and power-based way of negotiating. However, it seems that this has not affected how open or transparent the negotiation-processes are or how prone the decision-makers are to leak confidential information. The decision-makers’ relationship with media publicity has become more professional and strategic. The results point to an increased role of social media in communications management while the role of the news media seems to be diminishing. Even though the decision-makers view publicity as an even more risky and strategic arena of political struggle than they did before, they also seem now acknowledge more clearly the rational aspects of journalism. The self-reported role of media publicity as a source of personal authority has somewhat diminished while there seems to be no change in how prone the decision-makers think they are for the impacts of media publicity

Abstract: Narrative After Postmodernism takes a critical and practical look at the cultural theories of what comes after postmodernism or the postmodern. Alongside contemporary literary authors, the anthology studies diverse contemporary textual phenomena from TV shows to online fan theories and survivalist blogs. The essays compiled in this anthology tentatively apply the theories of the post-postmodern to contemporary texts to see how they might open up for analysis within their new theoretical frameworks or challenge them.The introduction, co-written by all the authors of this volume, introduces the most influential theories of post-postmodernism and contextualizes them within broader intellectual trends of the early 21st Century. The three essays comprising the first part of the volume discuss some of the theories of the postmodern in relation to contemporary works that seem to challenge them. Abstract: The book focuses on intangible and tangible heritage, language and vernacular religion of the Ingrians, Setos and Votes, three Finnic ethnic minorities sharing a long-standing identification with the Russian Orthodox faith. Written by 16 authors, the chapters are mainly based on nineteenth- and twentieth-century materials. The research history and collecting of folklore are also discussed.The historical area of the Ingrians and Votes is located in Ingria, adjacent to St. Petersburg, while the Setos have inhabited both sides of the border of southern Estonia and Russia. All three groups live on the borderline of the Eastern and Western Churches and cultural realms.Currently, the Ingrian and Votic languages are extremely endangered, while the Seto language has approximately 12,000 speakers. There is a high local interest in the maintenance and revitalisation of all three languages and cultural traditions

Abstract: This book approaches contemporary migration to Finland from the perspective of everyday security, presenting an alternative view to theories that examine the links between migration and security from the perspective of securitisation. By treating everyday security as a theoretical concept and as empirical lived reality, the book foregrounds migrants’ experiences of (in)security, as well as the perceptions of individuals and groups whose lives are touched by migration. Empirical studies investigate the ways in which security is produced at various levels, transnationally, and in multiple locations where encounters between long-term residents and newcomers occur, highlighting the roles of the welfare state, civic society, and the media. Abstract: The ten articles in this edited volume examine the city of Varkaus as a small city struggling with structural change using historical documents as well as survey and interview data. The city of Varkaus, which has a long industrial history, has lost a large part of its industrial jobs in the first decades of this millennium and its population has fallen sharply in recent years. However, a survey of the adult population shows that the inhabitants of Varkaus are typically satisfied with their work, with their social relationships and their lives in general. Varkaus is seen as a safe and good living environment. A central element of well-being is couple relationship, as well as other social relationships. The lack of well-being often stems from unemployment, low income and feelings of not belonging to the place of residence. Young adults value their place of residence as well as their family relationships, but there are tensions in their life regarding work and income. The tranquility and proximity to nature of Varkaus are appreciated, but there are also many who long for more urban heartbeat in their hometown

Abstract: Tässä kymmenestä artikkelista koostuvassa kokoomateoksessa tarkastellaan Varkautta rakennemuutoksen kanssa kamppailevana pienenä kaupunkina historiallisia dokumentteja sekä vuosina 2016–2017 kerättyjä kysely- ja haastatteluaineistoa hyödyntäen. Pitkän teollisuushistorian omaava Varkauden kaupunki on tämän vuosituhannen ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä menettänyt suuren osan teollisista työpaikoistaan ja sen väestö on supistunut voimakkaasti. Kuitenkin koko aikuisväestöä edustava kysely kertoo, että varkautelaiset ovat tyypillisesti tyytyväisiä työhönsä, sosiaalisiin suhteisiinsa ja elämäänsä muutenkin. Varkaus nähdään turvallisena ja hyvän elämän puitteet tarjoavana asuinpaikkana. Hyvinvoinnin tärkeitä osatekijöitä ovat parisuhde ja muut sosiaaliset suhteet. Hyvinvoinnin puutteet liittyvät työttömyyteen, pienituloisuuteen sekä ulkopuolisuuden tunteisiin suhteessa asuinpaikkaan. Nuoret aikuiset arvostavat omaa asuinpaikkakuntaansa sekä perhe- ja sukulaisuussuhteitaan, mutta arkielämään liittyy jännitteitä työn ja toimeentulon osalta. Abstract: "Drawing on the debate on mediatization of politics this study identifies cultural meanings, institutional practices and styles of argumentation as three theoretical dimensions that illuminate both the construction of journalistic publicity and its potential uses in political action. Based on the theoretical model, environmental politics is identified as a specific context for mediatization. In environmental politics, the interplay of cultural meanings, institutional practices and styles of argumentation define the construction and use of journalistic publicity in a way that differs from other fields of politics. The empirical part of this study analyzes the newspaper coverage of three Finnish environmental conflicts from 1971, 1994 and 2012. The theoretical model is transformed into an analytical framework that focuses on discursive construction of the conflicts (cultural meanings), journalistic frames, narration and opinion-giving in the coverage of the conflicts and the publicity practices adopted by actors during the conflicts (institutional practices) and legitimation of arguments (styles of argumentation). According to this study, the relation between media and politics in the field of environmental politics is defined by the increasing cultural significance of environmental protection from the 1970s to the present. In the newspaper coverage of the three environmental conflicts studied, changes on the frames, narration and opinion-giving of journalism resonated with this cultural change. However, the significance of environmental protection in the framing, narration and opinion-giving of journalism was greater in the national newspaper studied compared to the local newspapers selected based on their proximity to the conflict sites. Styles of argumentation appeared to be more case dependent. The increasing cultural significance of environmental protection did not have a clear effect on how arguments were legitimated. "

Abstract: " Voting advice applications (VAA) have supported Finnish voters for over 20 years in their voting decisions in general elections. Most Finnish VAAs are planned and provided by the media, and they are based on matching opinions of individual candidates with an individual VAA users before elections. Nowadays, in Finland, VAAs are important for almost all age groups. Among the youngest voters VAAs are viewed as the most important source of information to support voting decisions. The book provides up-to-date and comprehensive picture over the role and significance of VAAs in the Finnish political system and in the political communication arena. Research topics deal also with VAA journalism and how candidates perceive VAAs. Research data and data materials in use are wide-ranging. They range from survey data sets to questions of VAAs and from interviews of candidates and VAA producers to media content about VAAs. Abstract: This book explores the media coverage of three prominent Finnish labor market cases in the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. It analyzes how this arena supported or undermined the power positions of each side and the reaching of the contract. The cases in study are the first proper general agreement in 1968 (Liinamaa 1) and the endeavors for so-called “social contract” by the Government of Esko Aho (1991) and Juha Sipilä (2015). The study identifies changes and continuities in the political discourses, in the ways of making validity claims in political argumentation, and in media/journalistic interventionism. These content analytical viewpoints illustrate the theoretical ideas about mediatization of politics presented in the book. By analyzing corporatist and pluralist aspects of decision making, the book opens a view in the relationships among labor market organizations, the Government, and the media in the three decades studied

Abstract: "The stability and quality of work careers are major social and economic issues, as the funding of the Nordic welfare state is based on the employment of working-age people and the tax revenue collected from work, production and consumption. This edited volume examines how work careers have developed in specific industrial sectors and at different levels of education in recent decades. The research results are based on the linked employer-employee data of Statistics Finland, company statistics and interviews with industry experts. Careers are examined from several different perspectives, including career stability, employment status, income development, mobility between industries and places of work, and on-the-job training. Based on the results, careers have not weakened between cohorts on average in Finland. Instead of the often-expressed perception of greater job instability, there is high stability of employment combined with high mobility within the careers, owing to the high frequency of changing industries and jobs. However, the career development of women and the low-skilled lags behind that of men and the more highly educated, meaning that equality in earnings has not progressed. Other key findings of the study suggest that adult education differs according to the level of education, and that companies' investments in intangible capital anticipate positive career outcomes for employees."

The articles are divided into four thematic sets, the common denominator of which is the concern about the drifting of the comprehensive democratic German and Nordic Bildung/Didactic curriculum tradition into the narrower, competence and skills driven Anglo-American education and curriculum, shaped by the paradoxical alliance of assumedly apolitical instrumental learning theories and neoliberal policy measures

Abstract: Tämä artikkelikokoelma jatkaa keskustelua, joka käynnistyi vuonna 2017 julkaistussa ensimmäisessä suomenkielisessä opetussuunnitelmatutkimusta käsittelevässä teoksessa. Kirjan artikkelit jakaantuvat neljään teemakokonaisuuteen. Käsiteltyjä teemoja yhdistää huoli saksalais-pohjoiseurooppalaisen Bildung/Didaktiikka -opetussuunnitelmatradition ajautumisesta entistä ahtaammalle oppimisteorioiden jäsentämän, taitoihin ja kompetensseihin rajoittuvan, näennäisesti epäpoliittisen angloamerikkalaisen curriculum-opetussuunnitelmatradition sekä sen poliittisen aisaparin, uusliberalismin, puristuksessa

Abstract: This edited book ("Finance, Regulation, Steering – Current Topics of Audit and Control") provides original research about various current auditing and evaluation topics. Abstract: Teos sisältää tieteellisesti tutkittua tietoa tilintarkastuksen, valvonnan ja arvioinnin ajankohtaisista kysymyksistä. Sekä tarkastus että valvonta ovat olleet merkittävien muutosten kohteena viime vuosina niihin kohdistuvien sääntelyuudistusten, palvelujen ulkoistamisen ja toimintojen yhtiöittämisen vuoksi. Teoksen artikkelit liittyvät tarkastukseen ja valvontaan, kuten yhtiöjärjestyksen tarkastamiseen, tilintarkastuksen ja sisäisen tarkastuksen laatuun, tilintarkastuksen hintaan, epävarmojen veropositioiden merkitykseen, XBRL:n käyttöönottoon tilinpäätösraportoinnissa, kuntien riskienhallintaan, ulkoistettujen palveluiden valvontaan sekä omistajaohjaukseen julkissektorilla. Abstract: "This book provides the reader with understanding of the phenomenon of silent resistance, collecting and presenting research on it. Regulating, governing or controlling human activity often generates open resistance, which has been studied from the points of view of democracy, civil disobedience or political activism, for example. However, power relations and conflicts can also involve another kind of resistance, which may not necessarily even be recognised as resistance at first. It can be called silent, passive, invisible or everyday resistance. Silent resistance is a way of the subjugated or otherwise marginalised to challenge the dominant rules or systems. Because it does not proclaim resistance but rather tries to stay out of publicity, it is risk-free and low-profile activity that is seemingly non-political – and you can get away with it. Silent resistance can take many different forms: it may appear, for example, as silence and grumbling, isolation, avoiding and hindering issues or shifting attention to something irrelevant. The importance of everyday resistance rises from the signals of small networks in a situation where open confrontation is not possible or desired, but total inactivity is not an option either. Moreover, silent resistance remaining in the margin cannot be considered separate from open resistance, but as an important part in the process of realising more open resistance. Although power relations serve as the event framework of the phenomenon, silent resistance is a weapon not only in the hands of the subjugated. Its tactics can also be used by those who hold power. With the articles in the book, the reader can follow the most diverse situations of silent resistance through both historical and contemporary events. The cases outline different forms of silent resistance, as well as its mechanisms and motives. The articles in the collection reveal aspects of sociology, cultural anthropology, cultural research, youth research and historical research. This emphasises the wide spectrum of silent resistance, its loudness and multidisciplinary character. "

Abstract: "Kirja tekee näkyväksi vähän käsiteltyä hiljaisen vastarinnan ilmiötä sekä kokoaa yhteen ja esittelee sitä koskevaa tutkimusta. Kun ihmisen toimintaa säädellään, hallitaan tai kontrolloidaan, ilmenee usein myös avointa vastarintaa, jota on tutkittu esimerkiksi demokratian toteutumisen, kansalaistottelemattomuuden tai poliittisen aktivismin näkökulmista. Valta-asetelmiin ja konflikteihin voi kuitenkin liittyä myös toisenlaista vastarintaa, jota ei välttämättä ensin edes huomata vastarinnaksi. Sitä voidaan kutsua hiljaiseksi, passiiviseksi, näkymättömäksi tai arkipäivän vastarinnaksi. Hiljainen vastarinta on alistettujen tai muuten marginaalisiksi jääneiden tapa asettua poikkiteloin hallitsevien sääntöjen tai järjestelmien kanssa. Koska se ei julistaudu vastarinnaksi, vaan pikemminkin pyrkii pysymään poissa julkisuudesta, se on riskitöntä matalan profiilin toimintaa, joka on näennäisesti epäpoliittista ja josta ei jää kiinni. Hiljainen vastarinta voi saada monia erilaisia muotoja: se saattaa näyttäytyä esimerkiksi vaikenemisena ja jurnuttamisena, ulkopuolelle jättäytymisenä, asioiden välttämisenä, niiden vaikeuttamisena tai huomion siirtämisenä epäolennaiseen. Arkipäivän vastarinnan merkitys nousee pienten verkostojen signaaleista tilanteessa, jossa ei kyetä tai haluta lähteä julkiseen vastakkainasetteluun, mutta ei myöskään haluta pysyä täysin passiivisina. Marginaaliin jäävää hiljaista vastarintaa ei myöskään voida nähdä erillisenä avoimesta vastarinnasta, vaan se on tärkeä osa avoimemman vastarinnan aktualisoitumisen prosessia. Vaikka valtasuhteet toimivat ilmiön tapahtumakehyksinä, hiljainen vastarinta ei ole ainoastaan alistettujen toimintaa. Sen taktiikoita voivat käyttää myös valtaapitävät. Kirjan artikkeleiden mukana pääsemme seuraamaan mitä moninaisimpia hiljaisen vastarinnan tapahtumatilanteita sekä historiallisten että nykypäivän tapahtumien avulla. Erilaiset tapaukset avaavat ja jäsentävät hiljaisen vastarinnan esiintymismuotoja, samoin kuin sen mekanismeja ja motiiveja. Kokoelman artikkeleissa tulevat esiin sosiologian, kulttuuriantropologian, kulttuurintutkimuksen, nuorisotutkimuksen ja historiantutkimuksen näkökulmat. Tämä korostaa hiljaisen vastarinnan laajaa kirjoa, sen äänekkyyttä ja monialaisuutta. "

Kirja tarkastelee työelämän kehitysilmiöitä monitasoisesti kattaen niin muutoksen rakenteelliset kehityskulut, työvoimapolitiikan roolin, organisaatiokohtaiset käytännöt kuin yksilöiden kokemuksetkin. The book consists of research papers aimed at supplementing and updating the topics discussed previously in risk management literature. The articles cover the key concepts and essence of risk and risk management, basic issues of security construction, risk awareness in corporate decision-making, reputation risk and its impact on business operations, social risks, their significance and the dimensions of social risk management. The last article presents the freely available RiskDemo software, which allows the reader to test and illustrate a wide range of risk features. The book aims to respond to the recent changes in the risk management environment as well as to stimulate academic debate on the subject
