Abstract: In 1947 in India a large feeling of excitement spreads out the whole country for a new nation to be built, starting from its cultural pillars: schools and libraries. This is the background for the publishing of Ranganathan’s The Organization of libraries. With this book, Ranganathan aims «to relate library organization to education» and to provide «a description of library technique in brief». The threefold structure of the work clearly shows its objective of being a means of promotion for a new national library system in India, and the role that should be played by school libraries in this process. Part 1 is devoted to Library and Education, Part 2 to Library practice, and Part 3 to The national library system

Abstract: The Royal Institute of Signore Montalve alla Quiete was born between 1885 and 1886, by the union of the two congregations founded by the venerable Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo: the Montalve di Ripoli and the Montalve alla Quiete. From them inherits the principles and the educational action carried out for over two centuries, bringing them to the threshold of the new millennium. In this analytical inventory are described the papers produced by the new Institute. The core relating to female education is only one of the subjects that this archive can offer: architectural and social transformations, the two world wars, customs and traditions of population are just some examples of the researchs offered and the Tuscan historical frame that the cards draw in a well-defined way

Abstract: Eleonora Ramirez de Montalvo is one of the most important historical figures of woman's assistance and education during the seventeenth century. She is the founder of two lay congregations: the Minime Ancille of the Divine Incarnation (1647) and the Minime Ancille of the Holy Trinity (1650). This volume lists and describes in an analytical way the papers produced and preserved by the second of these, also known Montalve alla Quiete, which for over two centuries carried out an intense activity and exerted a considerable influence in Tuscany. The study of this archive provides a unique range of information both on the economic and political events, and on the relationships maintained by the Montalve with society growing its prestige and heritage. It also offers the opportunity to undertake countless historical research on facts that concern Florentine territory and the rest of Tuscany

Abstract: With the contributions of international experts, the book aims to explore the new boundaries of universal bibliographic control. Bibliographic control is radically changing because the bibliographic universe is radically changing: resources, agents, technologies, standards and practices. Among the main topics addressed: library cooperation networks; legal deposit; national bibliographies; new tools and standards (IFLA LRM, RDA, BIBFRAME); authority control and new alliances (Wikidata, Wikibase, Identifiers); new ways of indexing resources (artificial intelligence); institutional repositories; new book supply chain; "discoverability" in the IIIF digital ecosystem; role of thesauri and ontologies in the digital ecosystem; bibliographic control and search engines

Abstract: Alfredo Serrai in the volume Gabriel Naudé, Helluo Librorum, e l'Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque, publish the version from French to Italian of the first exposition of the Librarianship as a discipline, together with an ample introduction both historical and conceptual. With the arguments and the praxis introduced and explained by Naudé, in the first decades of the XVII century has begun the discipline "Librarianship as the science of the selection and of the order of books" that implement their disposition in a library. With Naudé the library becomes not only the proper image of the science, but a true testimonial of the verity against its manipulations and errors. In such a vision of both the research and morality, the naudean philosophical principles can be properly situated in the frame of a mature preilluminism

Abstract: The volume contains the proceedings of the conference Tramandare la memoria sociale del Novecento (Florence, 11.21.2019), on the occasion of presenting Gino Cerrito's archive. owned at present by the Social sciences library, University of Florence. Cerrito papers represent a primary source to investigate social movements in the XX century, especially anarchism, with particular reference to the War of Spain and to anarchical syndacalism between the two world wars. The project gave the opportunity to focus on the main issues concerning the preservation of the social memory of the XX century among experts and professionals. Historians, archivists, librarians, professors, association members and officers of the heritage preservation institutions discuss the problems and strategies confronting its conservation and enhancement. Investigate recent past requires a molteplicity of sources, beyond paper and through a great variety of expressions and media. And movements and their archives present peculiarities. Technical and political issues are considered, and a variety of cases and initiatives relating to archives dedicated to social movements and associations

Abstract: The story evokes an imaginary dialogue between a student and the master, after his death. The master is Luigi Crocetti, a well-known and unforgettable figure in the world of libraries. He was a librarian at the National Central Library of Florence, scholar and teacher of librarianship, president of the Italian Library Association in the 1980s. The master's death arouses in the student the desire to carry on a conversation with him about libraries and in particular about subject cataloguing. In these talks, the proposed themes are accompanied by feelings, memories, descriptions of landscapes, simple and naive reflections about life questions. Both of them intend to dispose the story’s protagonist and the reader to listen to the master’s lesson again. Although in narrative form, this text reviews some key passages of the Crocetti’s writings and also intends to contribute to the reconstruction of his intellectual biography. Some essays by the author about his thought and work are reproduced in the appendix

Abstract: This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This book discusses urban public spaces and, more specifically, run-down, inactive micro-spaces that are barely used due to their location, dimensions, morphology or semantic characteristics. In literature, these spaces are often defined as "residual urban spaces." A large abandoned industrial area on the outskirts of a town or a small interstitial space in a historical centre can be residual. With respect to such a broad subject matter, the book seeks to radically limit the field, concentrating on public residual spaces found in the oldest parts of cities. The book reflects on this theme and introduces a method for reading and assessment of the residuality of public spaces in historical contexts (Residuality Assessment Process) which was tested in the historical centre of Florence. It is the authors' view that residual spaces, above all if designed according to a system logic, can go from being problems to potential activators of urban and social regeneration processes, offering a useful contribution to improve city life

Abstract: This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This research was based on the transfer of knowledge from members of the Albanian Diaspora in Italy (university students, young architects and researchers) to their home country. This unique process blazed a trail in the Albania-related studies by creating a methodology, which could be replicated not only in Albanian rural contexts, but also elsewhere. The book constitutes a structured tool for generating sustainable and socially inclusive territorial development processes in five lesser-known Albanian cultural sites. Their tangible and intangible cultural heritage was seen as a driving factor for triggering development processes aimed at improving the inhabitants' quality of life and strengthening local identity and social networks. Through concrete proposals and strategies, the book offers scenarios and solutions capable of enhancing the potential of each village and, at the same time, counteracting the effects of land abandonment that so often characterise them

Abstract: Elegant, lofty, charming, brilliant, bellicose, refined, capricious, superb, temerarious, vain. Giulio Einaudi is an oxymoron. From the extensive literature that has furthered our understanding of his figure, he emerges as the synthesis of divergent behaviours and contrasting inclinations. This oxymoron translates in the features of his publishing house, which integrates diachronicity and current affairs, tradition and newness, scientificity and militancy. The book deepens our knowledge of one of the most neglected aspects of Giulio Einaudi's outstanding service towards Italian culture: namely his promotion of public libraries in the 1960s in Italy. Our starting point is the establishment of Dogliani's civic library, dedicated to his father the President Luigi Einaudi. Setting out from this event - which we have retraced with a particular eye towards oral history - the book proposes to rethink the relationship between Einaudi's view on library project and his cultural programme, which he expressed in the same years through an intense political campaign for the promotion of public access to reading

Abstract: People with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have a particular sensory sensitivity, causing their surrounding environment to affect the quality of life significantly. It is called a "spectrum", because there is a great variety of behaviours making it difficult to define universal and design criteria. These behaviours do however require a new dynamic and flexible approach, enabling the customization of the feedback to the project. Starting from the study of the specific needs of users, the environmental conditions and the design approaches, this research aims at providing innovative tools to support the design of "therapeutic" environments which could reduce the discomfort and stress related to the person's enablement, in order to include them in the social community within an integrated life project, concerning "home", applied living spaces (school, work, day centres...) and emergency conditions with respect to treatments

Abstract: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix

Abstract: The so-called 'digital revolution' and the economic and social transformations of the last decades have also involved university education, requiring not only some aspects of traditional lectures to adapt, but also several on-line teaching projects to be launched. A recent aspect of this process, started by North American university institutions such as Stanford, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is represented by the worldwide offer of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which have no limit concerning the number of participants. and do not require a binding and expensive registration. Using international literature on the subject, this study analyses the origins and evolution of this new system of university teaching

Abstract: Designing Autonomy at Home. The ADA Project. An Interdisciplinary Strategy for Adaptation of the Homes of Disabled Persons. Housing adaptations are one of the main tools for improving quality of life for people with severe disabilities and for their caregivers. They are also the main tool of the ADA Project, an action research that developed a strategy to tailor adaptations to the specific user needs and profiles. After an introduction to disability, accessibility and housing adaptations, the book describes the ADA Project's goals, stages and tools. It then focuses on the main scientific outcome of the Project: the ADA Assessment Model (AdAM), an interdisciplinary tool that analyses and assesses the functional and social profile of disabled persons and their relationship with the physical environment in which they live

Abstract: The initiative to offer one Festschrift to Silvano M. Danieli for his seventieth birthday pays tribute to a man and a professional whose work has left a deep mark on human relations and on the world of libraries. Silvano, librarian at the Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" and Prior of the Studio Marianum community in Rome since 2014, has indeed played a strategic role in the development of URBE, the association unifying the libraries of Rome's pontifical universities in a single network of services. The qualified list of Italian and European participants to the work is proof of the breadth of appreciation he earned in his thirty years of activity as librarian and curator of the Bibliography of the Servite Order and of the Marian Bibliography. Aelredo of Rievaulx (1109-1167), one of the leading figures of the Anglo-Saxon Cistercian monasticism, expresses the meaning of this gift with the following words: «A man, by virtue of the friendship he has towards another man, becomes a friend of God, according to what the Lord says in the Gospel: I no longer call you servants, but friends»(De spirituali amicitia, II, 14)

Abstract: A rich cultural insight of Rome in the second half of the 18th century emerges from the edition of an autograph memoir on the journey from Florence to Southern Italy made by the librarian Angelo Maria Bandini (1780-1781). Lounges, coffees and chocolates, religious rites, curial relations and the reforming action by Pope Pious VI are the backdrop to the meticulous description of Rome as a 'diffused museum'. Bandini, librarian and scholar of the enlightenment century, visits and observes palaces, art galleries, cabinets and churches, paying particular attention to libraries, whose metaphorical sieve gives birth to remarkable pieces and precious curiosities

Abstract: I nostri valori, rivisti is the profound reinterpretation, fifteen years after its first edition, of I nostri valori, which highly influenced the discussion on the present and future of libraries and librarians. The suggested professional values are: management skills, service, intellectual freedom, rationality, literacy and learning, equity of access to knowledge and information, privacy, democracy and, compared to the first edition, Michael Gorman adds the superior good. This is therefore an axiology of the library and even more than that, a defence of the library's value, but also a treatise on the library and the librarians advocacy, of a system and a profession which must continually evolve to reaffirm and consolidate their centrality in the social and cultural context

Abstract: In 2012, the bindings of the books of the ancient fund of the Library of social sciences showed the first signs of deterioration, due to the heavy changes in temperature and humidity of the conservation environment. While the University worked at implementing a new air conditioning system, the Tuscany Region and the officials of the National Central Library of Florence developed a project for the safety of the entire fund, to slow down the process of deterioration and prevent or stabilize the damage already present. The innovative method implemented in the Library was illustrated in a seminar held on November 24, 2016 at the Polo di Scienze Sociali of the University of Florence and this volume collects the speeches of the participants

Abstract: The vitality of a scientific field is usually attested by the fallout that research and publications have on the community of scholars who practice it and, therefore, on the development of the discipline itself and of its methodologies. The degree of "health" of a field of study, as well as its ability to get out of its niche of scholars and to see its validity recognised, is assessed by analysing whether and to what extent the works are read, commented on, cited by scholars from other geographical contexts and / or other scientific branches. The volume presents a research focused on the analysis of the level of internationalisation and vitality of Italian studies in the disciplines related to the study of books and documents, conducted through a series of parallel bibliometric investigations (query of citation databases, searches in Google scholar, application alternative metrics, library catalog analysis)

Abstract: This volume reconstructs the events of the private library of the Marquis Subdean Gabriello Riccardi (1705-1798), which at the end of its development will be joined and merged with that of the Family, today known as the Riccardiana Library. The research focuses in particular on the Manuscripts Fund, which was definitely the most relevant and precious part. The final result of the present study has produced both a topographical catalogue, which reconstructs the physical layout that these manuscripts had in their original location, and an alphabetical catalogue, according to the 18th Century original. Finally, the historical essay highlights the events that led this famous library, now unified by Gabriello's will, to save itself from dispersion and remain intact as we know it today. The publication is enriched by a Repertorial Section, available with open access in the digital version of the volume (eBook), which presents a series of documents, catalogues and indexes obtained from the study on the Library of Gabriello Riccardi

Abstract: In the activity of the librarian, the technical dimension, essential for working with professionalism, cannot ignore or be separated from commitment, attention to civil rights and the way in which they are lived and practiced within the community to which they belong. Ensuring access to information cannot be limited to 'our' library: it must be a responsibility that concerns the territory where we live and operate, looking to our colleagues who may find themselves in a difficult situation and especially to the people who have difficulties in exercising their rights. The hope is that the transmission of registered knowledge will contribute more and more to the freedom, rights and well-being of all. Will it still take time to understand that investing in libraries means investing in democracy, economic development and the quality of life? As always, the reference framework for understanding and interpreting library problems is that of the comparison with international library traditions, starting from the European continent, as the profession of the librarian today has a theoretical framework and an operational dimension of global reach

Abstract: Dissemination of scientific results is an important and necessary component of research activity. Nowadays research asks to be widely diffused and shared in a larger community in the effort to demonstrate its innovation and originality, so to enlarge network and obtain funds to keep working. In this context, PhD students, as part of scientific community and young researchers in training, have to understand the rule of publications to define the best strategy for the dissemination of their research. The present book, through the experiences of national and international PhD candidates, PhDs and Professors, is a contribute in the current opened debate on the most effective strategies and related tools to design specific actions, to highlight and improve the peculiar qualities and disciplines of each research

Abstract: This volume presents the research work carried out in the field of survey and representation methodologies for the documentation and analysis of wooden buildings. Thanks to the investigations carried out within a European project financed by the 7th Framework Program, several traditional Karelian villages, reported in this publication as case studies, have been documented with the aim of drawing guidelines for the development of suitable methodological protocols for documentation, analysis , survey, census and representation of complex systems. The research lays the foundations for the definition of an updated modus operandi to support the operators who are engaged in restoration, protection and preservation projects of the wooden architectural heritage

Abstract: The volume describes experiences of the first twelve years of the Social Sciences Library of the University of Florence in its new location. We talk about management contexts, organisational structures, analysis, projects, crises and solutions affecting most of the services. Moreover, we also present an approach and a working method. Our need to write stemmed from the impression of having accomplished a phase of our work and of being called to take stock of the situation, giving account of the work done and critically analysing it, in order to be ready to face the new challenges that the future would present, starting from today

Abstract: The volume explores the category of urban spaces that are self-managed by the inhabitants and can be recognized as common goods: urban communities. These are defined as third spaces (neither public nor private) and recognized on the basis of seven characteristics. Furthermore, some proposals are made on how planning can adequately treat these places, through the comparison with some municipal policies and on the basis of the self-determination of experiences in order to build a city really in the hands of its inhabitants. In fact, urban communities can be seen as a strategic place for testing new relationships between citizens and between them and institutions

Abstract: Via verde e via d'oro. Le politiche open access dell'Università di Firenze addresses the multifaceted issue of free and open access to knowledge. Open access is a movement born in the last century with the aim of improving the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Over the last ten years, the movement has experienced a growth of interest due to the positions taken by the most important research institutes of the world, and to the legislative interventions of political and academic bodies. This publication analyses the reality of open access from the different points of view of the people who bring it to life: authors, publishers, academic world, legislators, users of knowledge, etc. The University of Florence, which is among the major players in the promotion of open access in Italy, has long been following the march in favour of open access, through the use of the green road with FLORE, its institutional repository, and of the gold road with Firenze University Press (FUP), whose publications have been available through open access since the early 2000s

Abstract: The protection of the environment, the protection of ecological and natural resources, the sustainable enhancement of urban and rural spaces represent unquestionable ethical paradigms and unavoidable realities which the society of the third millennium must face. Environmental protection is accompanied by wider objectives related to the fruition of territorial contexts, under a perspective of active conservation; moreover, the intervention strategies have been modified according to the enhancement of resources and contexts, as well as the development of the specific features of the territory itself. Sustainability analysis as a tool to monitor, reinterpret, develop and enhance a territory, and in particular its natural heritage: this is the main theme of this book which reports the results of a research conducted by an interdisciplinary group sharing the Life Cycle approach. The Life Cycle approach is evolving in a methodology capable of incorporating the local as well as the global dimension, the macro and meso scale together with the product scale, the social dimension as well as the environmental and economic one. So, can such an approach be appropriate and practicable in the sustainability analysis of a territory? To this question, which is specifically directed at environmental aspects, biodiversity and environmental-spatial accessibility, the book intends to give an answer both on the theoretical level and on the practical one, with the introduction of a case study dealing with the territory hosting the Regional Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli in Tuscany. The book provides an overview of the analysis phases and of the indicators supporting the analysis and documents their application at different scales in the context of the Park

Abstract: The purpose of this book is to highlight the relevance of the international Open Access (OA) movement, which aims at supporting and promoting strategies for the dissemination of scientific research products with the support of network technologies and open access policies. The OA Institutional Repositories (IRs) will be presented within the framework of: some guidelines, research evaluation mechanisms, intellectual property issues, long-term storage, Data and Process Management Plan and Trusted Digital Repositories. The work will also present a survey on a sample of 23 (Italian and international) digital repositories in support of communication and of open access to online research content. On the basis of this investigation, a ToolKit will be presented which could be useful for programming and monitoring several different features of an IR. Subsequently, the reader will be presented with a metadata scheme for the description of the scientific research products in IRs, which takes into consideration the Guidelines for the creation and management of metadata in Institutional Repositories (CRUI, 2012) and the Linked Open Data-enabled Bibliographical Data Recommendations (Subirats, Zeng, 2015). Metadata enabled as limit of detection (LOD) data will play a key role in qualifying the semantic profile of the properties of the considered metadata and, consequently, of the information resources they represent. They will also contribute to the enhancement of semantic interoperability and to the online promotion of collaborative dynamics of scientific research content on an Italian and international level, strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of research itself

Abstract: Vernacular architecture represents a great resource that has considerable potential to define principles for sustainable design and contemporary architecture. This publication is the result of an overall aim to produce a valuable tool for analysis regarding vernacular heritage through different assessments, in order to define principles to consider for sustainable development. This was possible through a comprehensive reflection on the principles established and the strategies to recognise in different world contexts. The present publication was the result of an in-depth approach by 46 authors from 12 countries, concerned with the analysis and critical assessment of vernacular heritage and its sustainable perspective. The book presents 8 chapters addressing operational definitions and synopses advances, regarding the main areas of vernacular heritage contribution to sustainable architecture. It also presents 15 chapters and 53 case studies of vernacular and contemporary approaches in all the 5 continents, regarding urban, architectural, technical and constructive strategies and solutions. VERSUS, HERITAGE FOR TOMORROW: Vernacular Knowledge for Sustainable Architecture is the result of a common effort undertaken by the partners ESG | Escola Superior Gallaecia, Portugal, as Project leader; CRAterre | École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Grenoble, France; DIDA | Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy; DICAAR | Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Italy; and UPV | Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain. This is the final outcome of VerSus, an European project developed from 2012 to 2014, in the framework of the Culture 2007-2013 programme

Abstract: What does it mean to design hospitals according to the flows while satisfying the users' needs? How do the different parts of the hospital body bind together? When can a spatial and functional relationship be rightly defined as close, adjacent or distant? How difficult is it to walk along a connection? The volume reconstructs the state of the art on the theme of people flows in hospitals, and identifies tools to support the project and management of the flow system within hospitals. In particular, it presents the innovative approach Space Syntax, born in the Anglo-Saxon world and used for highly complex building projects. The book offers an original contribution in a sector in which the need for studies combining research and professional activity has arisen
