    Abstract: This volume presents the recovery, cataloging, and valorization project of the collection donated by the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) to the Mineralogical Cabinet of the Collegio Nazareno in Rome in 1785. This donation represents, so far, the only geo-mineralogical collection belonging to Joseph II with certainty. The specimen cataloging records, drawn according to the ICCD national catalographic standards for the mineralogical (BNM) and petrographic (BNPE) heritage, are freely available on the Catalogo Generale dei Beni Culturali website. The collection is open to visitors in its permanent exhibition at the Istituto San Giuseppe Calasanzio in Rome. This volume has been realized within the project PANN20.00605 “Dono imperiale. La collezione mineralogica dell’Imperatore Giuseppe II al Collegio Nazareno di Roma” thanks to the financial support of the Italian Ministry of University and Research, Annual Grant – Legge 6/2000 – D.D. 1524 of 21/01/2019

    Abstract: Psychoanalysis spread earlier and faster in Russia than in Western Europe. According to the author, there are three main reasons for this. First, psychoanalysis is based on the fictional structure of patients's narratives. In a literary-centric country such as Russia, the 'literary character' of psychoanalysis quickly attracts the Russian intelligentsia. Secondly, the formal similarities between literary and psychoanalytic language, and the close connection between the poetic word and the rhetoric of the unconscious, contribute to rendering Freudian language particularly familiar in Russia. Thirdly, the Silver Age, with its attention to the symbol, the 'other', and the double, contributes to increasing interest in the theory of the unconscious. This will continue until after the October Revolution as the state relies on psychoanalysis to help forge the new Soviet citizen. This 'alliance', however, is short-lived, and Freudian psychoanalytic theory will be ostracized from the 1930s up to the end of the Soviet regime

    Abstract: In the early 19th-century, Milan was the most active Italian city in the publishing of books. There, collectors, librarians, scholars of ancient literature and young men of letters were protagonists in an intense activity of publishing classical texts. New editions of Divina Commedia, Petrarch's Rime, Boccaccio’s Decameron, Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata and of many works by writers of the 18th century were published in Milan, in particular by Società Tipografica de' Classici Italiani (Italian Classical Writers’ Printing Society). In a period rich in cultural and linguistic debates, even discussions on the procedures for publishing texts took on a new importance. By analysing the statements of the editors, investigating their textual choices, following their polemics, Alberto Cadioli, one of the well-known Italian textual bibliography scholars for the modern texts, underlines the importance of the «sana critica», the «sound criticism» – i.e. the philological practice, according to the language of that time - with which classical texts were published in Milan in the first decades of the 19th century.     Abstract: In the context of the intense religious and social renewal known as "Gregorian Reform", the Camaldoli Hermitage and the Vallombrosa Abbey, both located in the Tuscan territory, gave rise to two movements of reform inspired by the spirituality of the respective founders, which later became congregations belonging to the benedictine family. Motivated by common instances, the Camaldolese and the Vallombrosan Orders were similar in some of their essential features and in the dynamics of their expansion. This statement has been the starting point of this work, which aims to formulate a comparative overview of the territorial spread of these reforms in Tuscany, by recording the known settlements and making an inventory of the religious communities interested by this phenomenom, in order to gather a broad range of examples of the way these movements interacted with the local situations in the different areas of the region. The text is enriched by a carthographic appendix illustrating the chronology of these congregations' development in medieval Tuscany

La narrativa comica di Henry Fielding e l'importanza dell'esempio cervantino analyses the influence of Don Quixote on Henry Fielding's fiction, starting with a survey of the reception of the Spanish novel in England. Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones are analyzed and compared with the Spanish novel, from which Fielding overtly borrowed some characters, episodes, and Cervantes' parodic strategies.     Abstract: Over the last decade, considerable attention has been paid to how the information society and digital tools are changing the cultural and linguistic scene where literary production takes place. But what are the roots of this change and of the consequent debate? This book was created with the aim of studying how two of the most influential Italian writers of the second half of the 20th century, Italo Calvino and Paolo Volponi reacted to the initial diffusion of information technologies in the mid-fifties by wondering about the function of literary language and artistic creativity in a context of intelligent machines and mass information. Eleonora Lima carefully analyses some of the lesser known texts by the two authors, and discusses the opposition between the natural and the technological world in a society where information has become a product and a good to be exploited. She reconstructs the prerogatives and identities of biological and mechanical subjects, as defined by the then emerging cybernetic science. Finally, she investigates the political role of television representation in the years of dispute and terrorism. The comparative analyses, organized by thematic nuclei which are preceded by an overall historical and methodological framework, reveal the ways in which a 'remediation' process took place in writing, and show how, with new and often divergent strategies, the two narrators have faced the need to adapt literary tools to the changed communication context in a very personal way

    Abstract: The book analyses the history of the Jesuat congregation, highlighting the elements of connection and comparison with the social contexts, then describing the origin and the most ancient events of the female branch of the congregation, and the memory of the meeting between the "founder" of the Jesuats and the "foundress" of the Gesuate. The iconographic memory of the initiator of the congregation, Giovani Colombini, the collection of the lauds of the Jesuat Bianco da Siena, and the fortune of the 15th-century Life of Giovanni Colombini, written by Feo Belcari, are also investigated. Then the research reconstructs the constellation of groups, religious experiments and bearers of ideas and devotions that were linked to the Jesuats and, in particular, to the convents of Milan, Siena, Lucca, Venice and Rome and the sanctuaries managed by the congregation. The congregational sociability is analysed along its lines: the practice of work as pharmacists and the cultivation of spiritual friendships with prominent people such as the Countess of Guastalla, Lodovica Torelli. Finally, the erudite use of Colombini's Epistolario as a language text is studied. The volume closes with a documentary appendix on the Jesuat convent of Chiusi

    Abstract: The murder of Emanuele Notarbartolo, former director of the Banco di Palermo, at the hands of the Sicilian Mafia in 1893 represents a controversial and obscure event in Italian history. There were three trials (Milan, Bologna, Florence), which also involved a Sicilian deputy: Raffaele Palizzolo. Anna Franchi's documentation work takes place in the Assize court of Florence: she attended every hearing, and observed relentlessly both the 'Mafia' phenomenon and the actual theatre of testimonies, confessions, retractions and false tracks characterising the trial in Florence (1903-1904). It was possible to widely integrate Franchi's account after the discovery of the entire folder relating to the process in the State Archives of Florence: about 1500 handwritten pages by the various chancellors dealing with the trial. The trial ended in a general acquittal for principals and executors for lack of evidence. For some, Sicily's honour was safe, but for many others, the truth was forever covered up

    Abstract: The book discusses the work of Italian Capuchins in the face of American otherness, especially in the catechism of Indians and mestizos accused of being devil's wizards. The friars faced a crisis in missionary optimism in the face of an alleged indigenous resistance to Christianity or to European social rules. The Portuguese colonial sources reveal evangelization as a field of dispute between the friars, the natives and the colonists, motivating daily conflicts, also encouraging changes in the social and symbolic traditions inside or near the missions. The indigenous people were not passive subjects in the process, contradicting the missionaries for the determination with which, supposedly, they practiced their "gentile" customs and rites. The documentation gathered adds important information to the study of indigenous peoples in contact with Capuchins in the inner territories of Portuguese America

    Abstract: Gerasim Zelic (1752-1828) is one of the most emblematic figures of the Serbian cultural scene between the 18th and 19th century. He as an archimandrite of the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Krupa, a diplomat and a writer. From 1794 to 1811, Zelic held the position of Vicar-General of the Serbs in Dalmatia and, as such, was one of the main actors of the events related to the confessional controversy that stirred the region at the time. His autobiography, entitled Žitije and published in Budapest in 1823, also places him among the protagonists of a crucial period for the birth of the new Serbian literature. Following a multidisciplinary approach, the essays collected in the volume Gerasim Zelic e il suo tempo analyse Gerasim Zelic's story, his involvement in the events related to the confessional controversy in Dalmatia and his literary activity, bringing the discussion to the era in which the Serbian archimandrite lived.     Abstract: The commentary of Lettere e rime which Chiara Matraini (1515-1604) published in Venice with the editor Moretti in 1597, when she was 82, intends to provide an organic analysis of the composition, of the relationship between the genres, of the modalities of the "imitatio" and of the philosophical, social and cultural substrate acting as a background in her last chansonnier. The study also focuses on her stylistic changes over a period of forty years (1555-1597), from the adherence to Petrarch and Bembo's canon to the end-of-the-century Mannerism, as well as on the counter-reformist twist characterizing a parallel writing of philosophical and devotional nature, which can be seen here between the lines. The investigation also takes the liber of Lettere e rime as a deliberately organic and structured whole in the meeting between the letters and the poems. By virtue of its 'marginality' as well, this shows a complex work, emerging together with the many afterthoughts which animated the long, almost century-long, life of the author from Lucca

    Abstract: The subject of this work is the morphosyntactic analysis of a corpus of Latin documentary papers which were written in the centre and the north of the Italian peninsula between the 7th and the 8th century. The study focuses on the competition, in the nominal phrase, between synthetic and analytical encoding of the dependent name, which is the result of the grammaticalization process of the phrase starting by the preposition "de", which in the Romance phase replaced the genitive case. This change is interpreted on a semantic basis, making use of the functional domain of possession. The volume also analyses nominal morphology which, although characterized by polymorphism and inconsistency, manifests phenomena such as the levelling of random oppositions and the reconstruction of inflectional paradigms, two inverse processes which find their cause in the principle of animacy

    Abstract: Vasyl' Stus's (1938-1985) poetry is one of the richest and most complex chapters in the literary history of late Soviet Ukraine. His poems are not only born of the author's talent, but also of his erudition and deep cultural awareness; Stus's poetry eloquently shows the presence of a significant Modernist trend in the literature of the Ukrainian underground during the Age of Economic stagnation. Stus's Modernism is the ideal evolution of the Ukrainian poetic culture of the first decades of the century, and develops thanks to an intense intertextual dialogue with the European literature. Stus's reception of Russian and German poetry, in addition to becoming the model for nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century Ukrainian poetry, proves fundamental to fully understand his work's literary palimpsest, which this volume offers a comprehensive reading of, from the early stages to the maturity's collections

    Abstract: This book was born from an observation and a desire. The starting point is that the multilingual nature of Andrea Zanzotto's poetry becomes almost invisible by virtue of being evident in the eyes of its readers. The babelic hypersensitivity of the petèl's poet is certainly not absent in critical studies, yet this work addresses it in a systematic way for the first time, by investigating on the multiple connections between poetic writing and languages. The desire that accompanied this reflection was to lead it with a "prismatic" gaze, crossing the poetry's multilingualism and the poet's translation practice, and summoning the many voices of its translators around the Zanzottian multivocality. A series of unpublished documents in the appendix, and the interventions of poets like Cecchinel, Demarcq and Rueff, alongside those of the best European experts of Zanzotto, add a special significance to this work. Speech given on June 26, 2007 at the Locanda da Lino in Solighetto (TV, Italy) on the occasion of the presentation of the book by F. Carbognin, L'«altro spazio». In the background, the United States with Wells and MacLeish who, by playing on the edge of credibility, announced the landing of Martians and mysterious foreign conquerors on the microphone. The second part of the volume is dedicated to the Italian post-war period, when writers systematically collaborated with radio stations, creating important works whose merit is also to focus and enhance the potential of an artistic genre which was still being defined and developed. Anna Dolfi started from questions like these in devising a book of great novelty and suggestion which, between nocturnes and music, wonders how literature, painting, cinema, opera, popular traditions and songs have narrated about blindness and vision, obsession and fear, or said nights were "tender", desperate, sublime, mysterious and mystical, told about nights of 'sickness', of repairing nights, white nights and sleepless nights, when the attempt is to resist while creating in order to challenge the breaking of dawn. The icon of Mozart's Queen of night, together with that of Schönberg's Pierrot, has accompanied about fifty Italian and foreign scholars and young researchers in an almost backlit way; they started from the 18th century and from Ossian's songs, continuing along a European night-themed path supported by theorists (Nietzsche, Bachelard, Jankélévitch...) and music (Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Fauré, Debussy, Britten...), and have worked on Novalis, Hölderlin, German Romanticism, Rilke, Celan, Müller, Hugo, Chenier, Baudelaire , Proust, Cocteau, Bonnefoy and many others, declining the Italian nocturnes from the graveyard elegies of Pindemonte to Leopardi, Di Giacomo, D'Annunzio, Onofri, Campana, Saba, Ungaretti, Sbarbaro, Montale, Penna, Pavese, Gatto, Caproni, Luzi, Bigongiari , Fortini, Jacobbi, Ripellino, Pasolini, Giudici, Rosselli, Sanguineti, De Signoribus, la Anedda, Magrelli and such. In this book we have tried to record the constancy and the alterations of the topos, highlighting the differences that exist between verbal, musical and visual expressions in relation to the changing times, the reversal of the role. If narrative, especially the Italian one, is present with Manzoni, Fogazzaro, D'Annunzio, Gadda, Vittorini, Pavese, Dessí, La Morante, Calvino...; poetry with Gatto, Jaccottet, Szymborska, Merini, Yves Bichet... how intriguing, in this complex volume conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi, is the attempt to move on almost border lands, making the cinema (Pasolini) and architecture speak, making music interact with literature and opera librettos, intertwining soundtracks with celebrated movies, giving figurative models to photography (through the shots by Letizia Battaglia). Guided by these words, Anna Dolfi has woven a fabric of suggestions that have pushed Italian and foreign scholars and even some protagonists to reflect on narrators, poets, essayists, historians, philosophers, publishers, artists, who have been induced by the history of a difficult affiliation to a sort of fatal, testimonial moral duty. The result was a book of great novelty for style and reading proposals which, starting from the ancient Jewish tradition, from legends relived in a political and libertarian key, after the Romanticism and the German 19th Century, brings to the fore the modern voices of European and North American literature/culture, and of the Yiddish and Eastern tradition. The names of the great Jewish intellectuals of Central Europe are recurring: Canetti, Schulz, Döblin, Antelme, Wiesel, Sebald, Oz, Grossman, Nelly Sachs, Irène Némirovsky..., among the Italians those of Loria, Natalia Ginzburg, Giacomo Debenedetti, Cesare Segre..., but especially Giorgio Bassani and Primo Levi who, in order to keep the memory of the tragedy of persecution and the Shoah, have chosen to place their entire work "entre la vie et la mort". Eventually, all this leads to remembering how the duty to testify is linked to the affection and work of mourning, to the lasting effect of an immediate wound that nourishes the connection between the truth of what happened and what one might call the "truth of creation", le vrai du roman

    Abstract: The death of the self passes through modern culture. However, chooses for himself the role of Psychopomp in obeyance not only to stylistic but also to profoundly ethical reasons. Bassani interrupts his narrative writing to give unity to the Romanzo di Ferrara and to entrust poetry with verses in the form of an epitaph. The testimonial "need" seems to emerge, giving meaning through the Prologue to the Giardino dei Finzi-Contini and to what will come after. It seems that the coherent constructive geometry of an entire work (intertwined since the beginning with refined European readings, figurative and Longhiani memories that Anna Dolfi highlights with wise precision) fully reveals the excess of the hourglass shape, of the conical structures that allow to glimpse distant flakes of light, pushing the real on the perilitant discrimination of the shadow. There, where the existing (objects, characters / people) is offered as a painted image alive only thanks to refraction and indirect projection of the gaze. This book investigates the strategies of Bassani's memory and his playing on revelation / concealment, while deeply analysing the compositional paths of the texts in their allocative ways (the very privilege, in poetry, of the dialogic and epistolary form). Moreover, the work strongly questions the places of the distance, the introjection of mourning, the relationship between history and truth, between the code of reality and the effect of reality, the convergences between biography and culture (in the names of Caravaggio, Cézanne, De Staël, Morandi, Bacon; Dante, Manzoni , Tommaseo, Hawthorne, James, Dickinson, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud ...), offering a new and suggestive interpretation of Bassani's "writing beyond the heart"

    Abstract: The lucky discovery in Athens of the letters of Luzi, Traverso and Macrí to Margherita Dalmati allowed to complete the epistolary of the Greek poet and harpsichordist preserved in the archives of Florence and Urbino. The 341 pieces available thanks to Sara Moran's research allow us to trace her contacts with the great protagonists of post-war literary Florence, also showing their links with the Roman and Milanese environment.
