    Abstract: This open access book explores El Hierro Island, which is geologically the youngest of the Canary Islands (Spain). Having registered its latest volcanic eruption in 2011-2012, it is an oceanic subtropical island with low population pressure and a largely unchanged natural landscape. Accordingly, a great geodiversity of volcanic morphologies and erosion processes has been preserved. In addition, half of the land is protected as a Biosphere Reserve and as a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the island is pursuing energy self-sufficiency. Local tourism is a sustainable activity, as the main attractions are either diving or hiking through the island's various volcanic landscapes. Covering these and other aspects, and using accessible language, the book will appeal to scientists specialized in geotourism, active leisure entrepreneurs, and members of the general public interested in volcanic geoheritage and geotourism

    Abstract: E.A. Martel (1859-1938) is rightly regarded as one of the most important people in the history of cave study. Writing in French, as he did, his work was little known in those parts of central Europe that were in the Austrian empire. Thus much of what he wrote about the Classical Karst was not readily accessible to those now living in that area. It is for that reason that this English translation of his 1894 publication has been made. Martel had been in Slovenia from 14 September 1893 to mid October. He was shown the principal caves and karst features of the region by Wilhelm Putick who had been exploring these places from 1886 onwards. It is they whose wider lives are difficult to trace and it is 4634 of them who are recorded here, with information from birth certificates, obituaries, unpublished letters and mentions by other people.     Abstract: To je zelo dolgočasna knjiga. Tako kot slovar vsebuje samo dejstva: dejstva, ki jih ni mogoče najti drugje. Ljudje, ki so pomembni za preučevanje jam in krasa, so znani po tem, kaj so počeli, kaj so napisali in na koga so vplivali. Toda večkrat o njih poznamo zgolj ime. Morda o nekaterih vemo tudi kaj več, med njimi so kralji, romanopisci ali zdravniki. Nekateri, denimo Darwin ali Freud, so svet celo spremenili, toda večinoma so imeli le neizstopajoče normalno življenje, med katerim so tudi raziskovali, preučevali ali pisali o jamah. To so tista življenja, o katerih je težko najti kaj več. V knjigi je 4634 gesel, ki vsebujejo podatke iz rojstnih listov, osmrtnic, neobjavljenih pisem in omembe drugih ljudi. Šele ta širši pogled iz njih naredi prave ljudi. V nekaterih primerih je bilo njihovo zanimanje za jame del njihovega poklicnega življenja.     Abstract: The book is the result of joint work and many years of mutual cooperation between researchers from Slovenia and Croatia. It was made as part of the transboundary project ŽIVO! Življenje - voda! (Life - Water!) (IPA CBC SI-HR 2007-2013), which involved the participation of authors from project partner institutions as well as invited authors who are famil­iar with the characteristics of the karst area of Northern Istria and the conditions there relating to drinking water supply. The monograph presents the natural features of Northern Istria, the karst and karst phenomena, karst hy­drogeology, ecology and microbiology, and highlights in particular the vulnerability of the karst to various human activities. The main focus of attention is on karst water sources. In assessing their characteristics we used available knowledge of karst water on both sides of the border and supplemented it with new research on the transboundary area in question, which was based on field measurements and sampling, and chemical, microbiological and biologi­cal analysis of water. The collected findings form the basis for planning more effective monitoring of the quality of karst water sources, their protection and consequently the improvement of their quality.First editon was published in 2015, this corrected second edition is available also in paperback (ISBN 978-961-05-0001-8)
    Abstract: Knjiga je rezultat skupnega dela in dolgoletnega medsebojnega sodelovanja raziskovalcev iz Slovenije in Hrvaške. Nastala je v sklopu čezmejnega projekta ŽIVO! Življenje - voda! (IPA CBC SI-HR 2007-2013), kjer so sodelovali tako avtorji iz inštitucij projektnih partnerjev kot vabljeni avtorji, ki poznajo značilnosti kraškega območja severne Istre in tamkajšnje razmere pri oskrbi s pitno vodo. V monografiji so predstavljene naravne danosti severne Istre, kras in kraški pojavi, kraška hidrogeologija, ekologija in mikrobiologija, posebej pa je izpostavljena ranljivost krasa na različne človekove dejavnosti. Glavna pozornost je posvečena kraškim vodnim virom.     Abstract: The Triglav Glacier lies on the southeast edge of the Alps, in the Julian Alps below Mount Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak. Its upper edge lies at 2,500 m. The glacier has been regularly measured, observed, and studied since 1946 by the Anton Melik Geographical Institute at ZRC SAZU. When measurements began it covered 14.4 ha, but today it covers less than half a hectare. The glacier no longer has all glacial features. Thus one may only speak of a glacier because of its past, when it clearly had the basic features of an alpine glacier. Analysis of the geomorphic forms of the Triglav Mountains allows reconstruction of past glaciation. Moraine deposits above the upper edge of Mount Triglav's North Wall indicate the glacier's extent during the Little Ice Age. When this ended in the nineteenth century, visits to the Triglav Mountains started increasing, and so there are many written and pictorial sources available from this time
    Abstract: Triglavski ledenik od leta 1946 redno merijo, opazujejo in preučujejo sodelavci Geografskega inštituta Antona Melika ZRC SAZU. Na začetku meritev je bila njegova površina 14,4 ha, do danes pa se je skrčil na slabo polovico hektarja. Zdaj ledenik nima več vseh ledeniških značilnosti. O ledeniku lahko govorimo le še zaradi njegove preteklosti, na osnovi analize geomorfnih oblik Triglavskega pogorja ter pisnih in slikovnih virov iz 19.in 20. stoletja. Obdobje meritev z vidika kolebanja ledenika kronološko delimo na štiri dele. Prva leta do leta 1964 je zaznamovalo krčenje ledenika. Leta 1952 je bil ledenik prvič geodetsko izmerjen. Na podlagi teh meritev smo lahko izračunali tudi prostornino ledenika. Drugo obdobje od leta 1965 do leta 1982 je zaznamovala stagnacija v krčenju ledenika. V večini let je ledenik tudi ob koncu talilne dobe prekrival sneg. Tretje razdobje med letoma 1983 in 2003 je zaznamoval najhitrejši umik ledenika. V devetdesetih letih 20. stoletja smo posodobili meritve, leta 1999 smo začeli z rednimi fotogrametričnimi meritvami, tega leta smo prvič izmerili debelino ledu z georadarjem. V zadnjem razdobju po letu 2003 se je krčenje ledenika znova upočasnilo

    Abstract: Research represent in this monograph (Incomplete Solution Of Carbonate Rocks In Karst Caves Of Slovenia) was dedicated to incomplete solution of limestones and dolomites in karst caves~that is to occurrence of thick, soft weathered zones of "soluble" residue of carbonate rocks. With field and laboratory analyses I have tried to find out what is happening within the carbonate rocks during weathering and why they do not dissolve completely. Solution penetrates into the rock along various textures and structures. Results of analysis have shown that during weathering limestones and dolomites become purer~Mg, Sr and U are leached out, structure of the rock becomes more porous. In the cases when surface of weathered rock come in contact with flowing water, the water tears exposed particles and transports them away. If water does not flow over the exposed particles fast enough, they remain attached to the wall of the cave. The ratio between corrosion and the mechanical erosion of carbonate rocks on cave passages walls is more significant for the formation of roughness and rocky relief on the wall than for the growth of the passage. Microorganisms are present in the processes, but it is not yet known if they contribute to the weathering. From research follows that zones of white porous rock on cave walls are a product of weathering and are not precipitated secondary minerals
    Abstract: Raziskave, predstavljene v monografiji, so bile posvečene nepopolnemu raztapljanju apnencev in dolomitov v kraških jamah~to je pojavljanju debelih, mehkih con »topnega« ostanka karbonatnih kamnin. S terenskimi in laboratorijskimi analizami sem skušala spoznati, kaj se dogaja v karbonatnih kamninah med preperevanjem in zakaj se popolnoma ne raztopijo. Raztapljanje prodira v kamnino po različnih strukturah in teksturah. Rezultati analiz so pokazali, da se tako apnenec kot dolomit med preperevanjem čistita~izlužijo se Mg, Sr in U, struktura kamnine pa obenem postaja vedno bolj porozna. V primerih, ko je površina preperele kamnine v stiku s tekočo vodo, voda z njene površine trga izpostavljene delčke in jih odnaša. Če voda ne teče dovolj hitro čez izpostavljene delčke, ostanejo na steni rova. Razmerje med korozijo in mehansko erozijo karbonatne kamnine v steni jamskega rova je bolj pomembno za oblikovanje hrapavosti in različnih skalnih oblik na stenah kot pa za samo rast rova. Mikroorganizmi so prisotni, ne vemo pa še ali sodelujejo pri preperevanju. Iz raziskav sledi, da so cone bele porozne kamnine na jamskih stenah produkt preperevanja in ne izločanja sekundarnih mineralov

    Abstract: Iz vremskih in kozinskih plasti so predvsem iz paleoekološkega in deloma iz biostratigrafskega stališča raziskani štirje profili iz neposredne okolice Škocjanskih jam. Namen raziskave je bil proučevanje okolja sedimentacije plasti z giroplevrami v vremskih plasteh in tistega dela kozinskih plasti, kjer se pojavljajo haraceje in polži. Školjke iz rodu Gyropleura, Apricardia in morda še druge školjke so v apnencih vremskih plasti na drugotnem mestu~školjke so živele v plitvi vodi nedaleč od obale, na drugotno mesto so jih prinesli valovi in tokovi~odsotnost rapidionin v horizontih z giroplevrami potrjuje trditev, da so bile lupine nametane proti obali, saj so rapidionine živele v izrazito lagunskem okolju. Na plitvo okolje sedimentacije kažejo tudi laminiti~pri haracejah iz kozinskih plasti imamo primere flore na mestu in primere presedimentiranih delov haracej (oogonijev)~oogonije so vodni tokovi prenašali proti globljim delom sedimentacijskega bazena. Skupaj z nepresedimentiranimi haracejami se pogosto pojavljajo tudi polži, s kemično analizo kisikovih in ogljikovih izotopov v vzorcih pa je bil ugotovljen večkraten vpliv sladke vode na morsko okolje

    Abstract: This volume analyzes the relief of the Triglav Lakes Valley and evaluates the landforms in terms of nature protection. The central part of the study consists of two parts: a relief analysis and landform evaluation. The assessment employed the Swiss method, which comprises central (scientific) assessment criteria (rareness, representativeness, integrity and paleogeographical value) and is supplemented by additional criteria (ecological, aesthetic, cultural and economic value). The result of the relief analysis and the evaluation of geomorphological units is the cartographic, tabular, pictorial, and descriptive presentation of geomorphosites in the Triglav Lakes Valley.     Abstract: Monografija se osredotoča na reliefno analizo Doline Triglavskih jezer in naravovarstveno vrednotenje reliefnih oblik. Osrednji del raziskave je sestavljen iz reliefne analize in vrednotenja reliefa. Zaradi drobljenja reliefnih oblik, njihove zelo različne velikosti in večjega naravovarstvenega pomena območij z veliko gostoto in raznovrstnostjo oblik, je relief ovrednoten po 17 enovitih geomorfoloških enotah. Uporabljena je švicarska metoda, ki jo sestavljajo osrednja oziroma znanstvena merila vrednotenja (redkost, tipičnost, celovitost, paleogeografska vrednost), dopolnjena z dodatnimi merili (ekološka, estetska, kulturna, ekonomska vrednost). Rezultat reliefne analize in vrednotenja geomorfoloških enot je kartografski, tabelarični, slikovni in opisni prikaz območij geomorfološke dediščine v Dolini Triglavskih jezer.     Abstract: Rakov Škocjan is a basin in a small karst plain comprising the Rak Valley and the small basin Podbojev Laz. Bedrock terraces in the basin slopes indicate flattening of the basin floor at the water table level at higher elevations and progressive basin development and transformation with surface water flow. Detailed studies of the surface and subsurface karst features in Rakov Škocjan made it possible to describe the basin's evolution and its development in previous genetic stages. The study ('Geomorphological Characteristics of Rakov Škocjan') based on detailed morphographic mapping, collection of morphometric data, speleological analyses, and granulometric analyses of loamy sediments. A synthesis of the findings shows that the basin's genesis and development was much more complex than described in earlier literature. The basin was formed as a surface karst feature through several development stages in which the locations of springs and ponors had changed. Morphogenetic characteristics resulted in an exceptional variety of karst phenomena in a small area, although the basic water course in the broader regional sense did not significantly change
    Abstract: Kotlina Rakov Škocjan je poglobitev v manjši kraški uravnavi, sestavljena iz doline Raka in kotanje Podbojev laz. V pobočjih kotline so izoblikovane živoskalne uravnave, ki kažejo na uravnavanje dna kotline na višjih nadmorskih višinah, postopen razvoj in preoblikovanje s površinsko tekočo vodo. Podrobno so bile preučene površinske in podzemne kraške oblike, ki nakazujejo razvoj kotline v preteklih razvojnih fazah. Preučevanje je temeljilo na podrobnem morfografskem kartiranju območja, zajemu morfometričnih podatkov preučevanih oblik, speleoloških analizah jam in laboratorijskih analizah ilovnatega sedimenta. Sinteza nakazuje, da sta nastanek in razvoj kotline kompleksnejša, kot je bilo doslej predstavljeno v literaturi. Kotlina se je namreč kot površinska kraška oblika oblikovala v več fazah, v katerih so se lokacije izvirov in ponorov spreminjale. To je povzročilo izredno pestrost kraških pojavov na majhnem območju

    Abstract: Dobro poznavanje naravne in kulturne dediščine krasa je pogoj za smiselno načrtovanje življenja na njem. Pridobljeno temeljno znanje skušamo krasoslovci urediti tako, da je kar čimbolj uporabno tudi načrtovalcem.     Abstract: Knjiga obravnava erozijske procese v slovenski Istri in je prva monografija s tovrstno tematiko pri nas. V uvodnih poglavjih so predstavljeni rečno-denudacijski relief v Sloveniji, erozijsko-denudacijski procesi in njihovi vplivni dejavniki ter obseg erozijskih procesov v Sloveniji, Sredozemlju in Sivi Istri. Največji del knjige je namenjen predstavitvi konkretnih meritev erozijsko-denudacijskih procesov v porečju Dragonje. Meritve, ki so potekale od februarja 2005 do maja 2006, so obsegale meritve erozije prsti, sproščanja flišnih kamnin iz strmih golih pobočij, premikanja sproščenega flišnega gradiva po erozijskem jarku in kemične denudacije v porečju. Sproščanje flišnih kamnin je v povprečju okrog 80 kg/m2 na leto, kar pomeni, da se pobočja umikajo s hitrostjo od 35 do 50 mm letno. Meritve denudacije so razkrile, da se površje na 1000 let zniža za 66 mm

    Abstract: Agricultural terraces are the predominant landscape element in the Goriška brda region. These were once made by hand, but started being built mechanically after the Second World War. Reshaping slopes into terraces increases the amount of arable farmland. Farming, especially cultivation of vineyards and orchards, is still the most important industry in this region. The development of winegrowing has indelibly marked the image of the cultural landscape here.Terraces are mostly being abandoned in regions with market-oriented mechanized farming. Much of the formerly terraced land in upper Goriška brda is now completely overgrown or deteriorated. The former extent of these agricultural terraces cannot even be precisely determined using the land cadastre carried out under Emperor Franz I. In contrast, the agricultural terraces in lower Goriška brda are being constantly renovated.Maintenance of terraces prevents water loss and reduces soil erosion. When the shape of hillsides is changed, large quantities of soil are moved, and steep slopes are altered, this can cause land slippage and large areas can become unstable. Detailed study indicates that Goriška brda is exposed to a high risk of landslides.This study was carried out as part of Interreg project IIIB Alpine Space, titled "The Terraced Landscapes of the Alpine Arc" (ALPTER)
    Abstract: Monografija na primeru Goriških brd predstavlja slovenske izsledke v okviru mednarodnega raziskovalnega projekta, katerega glavni namen je preprečevanje propadanja terasiranih kmetijskih zemljišč v širšem območju Alp. S terasnim preoblikovanjem pobočij se povečuje obdelovalno kmetijsko zemljišče, preprečuje negativne učinke erozije, tudi erozije prsti, zadrži pa se tudi več vlage in podaljša talno vlažnost. Prevladujoča pokrajinska prvina v Goriških brdih so kulturne terase. Nekoč so terase urejali ročno, po drugi svetovni vojni pa so jih začeli graditi strojno. V zgornjih Goriških brdih je zaradi negativnih demografskih gibanj veliko nekdanjih terasiranih območij že popolnoma propadlih ali zaraščenih. Nasprotno kulturne terase v spodnjih Goriških brdih lastniki nenehno obnavljajo in posodabljajo. Knjiga ni le temeljit prispevek k obravnavi kulturnih teras, ampak je najbolj poglobljeno delo o Goriških brdih nasploh

Drips and drip pools are important because they are just about the only way of assessing the epikarst community. Using a special sampling device, it was possible to sample individual drips for extended periods of time. A total of 37 species of copepods were found in drips and drip pools.     Abstract: Author describes the evolution of the caves and karst surface of the Divaški kras, an area above caves Škocjanske jame and Kačna jama. This karst is with 18 km of known cave passages, accessible to the depth of 280 m, one of the most interesting karst areas in Slovenia. There are descriptions of the oldest caves that are because of the denudation of the surface in shallow depth or surface already cuts trough them. These unroofed caves, which can be found there, enable the reconstruction of the oldest phases of the karst formation. In following chapter cave system of Škocjanske jame - Kačna jama is presented. In these two caves was with the analysis of the geological structure and comparison of the for these two caves geological structures, passage morphology, and recent sediments were sediments analysed in order to get evolution of the caves. Special attention was paid to the large chambers, canyons and collapse dolines. The hydrology of the underground river Reka is described, especially the bifurcations to several separated streams. In special chapter there are results of the datations of the stalagmites and other flowstone which dates some phases in cave evolution and well reflects the past climatic changes. In well designed book with rich photographic material an extensive bibliography is added and summary in Slovene and English language
    Abstract: Avtor sintetično obravnava razvoj jam in površja Divaškega krasa med Škocjanskimi jamami in Kačno jamo. Ta kras je z okrog 18 km znanih jamskih rovov dostopnih do globine 280 metrov eno najbolj zanimivih kraških področij v Sloveniji in tudi v svetu. Opisane so najstarejše jame, ki leže zaradi denudacije plitvo pod površjem ali pa jih je površje že prerezalo. Te brezstrope jame s sedimenti, ki jih tam najdemo, omogočajo rekonstrukcijo najstarejših faz oblikovanja krasa. Sledi poglavje, v katerem je prikazan jamski sistem Škocjanskih jam in Kačne jame. Pri teh dveh jamah je s pomočjo analize geološke strukture in morfološke primerjave rovov ter analize recentnih sedimentov obdelana geneza jam s poudarkom na nastanku velikih dvoran, kanjonov in udornic. Opisana je hidrologija podzemne Reke ob različnih vodostajih ter njeno raztekanje na več ločenih tokov. V posebnem poglavju najdemo rezultate datacij kapnikov oziroma sige, kar omogoča datiranje nekaterih faz v razvoju jam, predvsem pa dobro odraža klimatske spremembe v preteklosti

    Abstract: The Postojnska jama cave system represents a union of old, now dry, horizontal cave passages, the Pivka river active passage, and shafts or collapse dolines, which enable surface connection with some cave passages. The present entrance to the cave is formed at the contact between the Postojna basin impermeable Eocene flysch and the Upper Cretaceous limestone. The Pivka river sink entrance is formed along interbedded movements in the horizontal direction, and in the vertical direction it lies in a strong tectonic fault zone of NE-SW direction. The cave passages are formed in tectonic deformations which developed by the formation of the Postojna anticline, as there are interbedded movements, and in later fault deformations, where the main tectonic fault zones directions are the Dinaric NW-SE and cross-Dinaric NE-SW. Besides two main fault directions, the accompanying broken and fissured zones which are the result of the fault Dinaric tectonics are also favourable to cave formation
    Abstract: Sistem Postojnskih jam predstavlja združbo starih, danes suhih, vodoravnih jamskih rovov, aktivnega rova reke Pivke in brezen oziroma udornic, ki omogočajo povezavo površja z nekaterimi jamskimi rovi. Današnji vhod v jamo je oblikovan na kontaktu med neprepustnim eocenskim flišem Postojnske kotline in zgornje krednim apnencem. Ponorni vhod reke Pivke je v horizontalni smeri oblikovan po medplastnih zdrsih, v vertikalni smeri pa leži v močni tektonsko prelomni coni smeri severovzhod-jugozahod. Jamski rovi so se oblikovali v tektonskih deformacijah nastalih pri formiranju Postojnske antiklinale, kot so medplastni zdrsi ter v kasnejših prelomnih deformacijah, pri čemer so glavne smeri tektonsko prelomnih con Dinarske SZ-JV in prečno Dinarske SV-JZ. Poleg dveh glavnih prelomnih smeri so ugodne tudi spremljajoče porušene in razpoklinske cone, ki so rezultat prelomne Dinarske tektonike
