    Abstract: In recent decades, the field of Biblical Hebrew philology and linguistics has been witness to a growing interest in the diverse traditions of Biblical Hebrew. Indeed, while there is a tendency for many students and scholars to conceive of Biblical Hebrew as equivalent with the Tiberian pointing of the Leningrad Codex as it appears in Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS), there are many other important reading traditions attested throughout history. Origen’s Secunda reflects a late Roman reading tradition of Biblical Hebrew transcribed into Greek letters. Occasional transcriptions of Biblical Hebrew into Latin letters in Jerome’s commentaries similarly reflect a reading tradition from early Byzantine Palestine. In the medieval period, alongside Tiberian Hebrew we also find the Babylonian tradition and the Palestinian tradition. The modern oral reading tradition of the Samaritan community also likely has roots in the Second Temple period. Aside from these primary attestations of the reading traditions, there are a whole host of other modern reading traditions of Biblical Hebrew, from Ashkenazi, to Sephardi, and Yemenite. Despite the rich diversity of traditions of Biblical Hebrew at our fingertips, the linguistic relationship between them has never been mapped out. In this book, then, the phyla-and-waves methodology, which has been used for Semitic language classification, is used to map out the relationship between the main reading traditions of Biblical Hebrew throughout history

    Abstract: This volume explores an underappreciated feature of the standard Tiberian Masoretic tradition of Biblical Hebrew, namely its composite nature. Focusing on cases of dissonance between the tradition’s written (consonantal) and reading (vocalic) components, the study shows that the Tiberian spelling and pronunciation traditions, though related, interdependent, and largely in harmony, at numerous points reflect distinct oral realisations of the biblical text. Where the extant vocalisation differs from the apparently pre-exilic pronunciation presupposed by the written tradition, the former often exhibits conspicuous affinity with post-exilic linguistic conventions as seen in representative Second Temple material, such as the core Late Biblical Hebrew books, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Ben Sira, rabbinic literature, the Samaritan Pentateuch, and contemporary Aramaic and Syriac material. On the one hand, such instances of written-reading disharmony clearly entail a degree of anachronism in the vocalisation of Classical Biblical Hebrew compositions. On the other, since many of the innovative and secondary features in the Tiberian vocalisation tradition are typical of sources from the Second Temple Period and, in some cases, are documented as minority alternatives in even earlier material, the Masoretic reading tradition is justifiably characterised as a linguistic artefact of profound historical depth

    Abstract: As a discipline, the study of Biblical Hebrew grammar began largely among Arabic-speaking Jews of the Middle Ages, particularly in the ʿAbbasid period (750–1258 CE). Indeed, it has long been acknowledged by scholars that the Hebrew grammatical tradition, in many ways, grew up out of and alongside the Arabic grammatical tradition. Many concepts present in Hebrew grammar have their origins in the writings of Arabic grammarians of the ʿAbbasid period. And yet, as recent linguistic and anthropological work has shown, setting down ‘the grammar’ of a language can be as much an ideological or political activity as an academic one. In addition to the language itself, speech communities also share beliefs and attitudes about that language—what linguistic anthropologists would term a ‘language ideology’. Language ideology can have a dramatic impact on what forms of the language one regards as acceptable and what sort of rules one imposes on and through their description of the language. Nevertheless, while much work has been done on the interface between Hebrew and Arabic grammar and literature in the Middle Ages, interface of their respective language ideologies has yet to be treated theoretically or systematically. In the present book, then, we survey six specific characteristics of a ‘standard language ideology’ that appear in both the writings of the Hebrew grammarians who wrote in Judeo-Arabic and the Arabic grammarians during the ʿAbbasid period. Such striking lines of linguistic-ideological similarity suggest that it may not have been only grammatical concepts or literary genres that the medieval Hebrew grammarians inherited from the Arabic grammatical tradition, but a way of thinking about language as well

    Abstract: In this monograph, Roberta Morano re-examines one of the foundational works of the Omani Arabic dialectology field, Carl Reinhardt's Ein arabischer Dialekt gesprochen in 'Oman und Zanzibar (1894). This German-authored work was prolific in shaping our knowledge of Omani Arabic during the twentieth century, until the 1980s when more recent linguistic studies on the Arabic varieties spoken in Oman began to appear. Motivated by an urgent need to expand and reinforce our understanding of Omani Arabic, the book provides a linguistic analysis of the Omani vernacular spoken in the al-ʿAwābī district (northern Oman), based on the speech of fifteen informants recruited throughout the area. It also provides a comparative analysis of the new data with that collected by Carl Reinhardt in 1894. This comparison enables the reader to appreciate the extent of diachronic linguistic variation in the region, and also sheds light on the threats that such variation poses to Omani-specific linguistic features. Organised in four chapters, the book presents a sociolinguistic analysis of the Omani linguistic landscape followed by an examination of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of the al-ʿAwābī vernacular. Each chapter contains primary data collected by the author in situ compared, when applicable, with Carl Reinhardt's materials. The appendix includes two sample texts extrapolated from the recordings, fourteen proverbs and one traditional song.     Abstract: Slovar Pohlinovega jezika prinaša prikaz in razlago besedja, ki ga je naš prvi narodni buditelj Marko Pohlin (1735-1801) prikazal ali uporabil v svojih jezikoslovnih delih. To so Tu malu besedishe treh jeſikov (1781), ki je prvi natisnjen slovar s slovenščino na prvem mestu, Glossarium Slavicum (1792), ki je prvi natisnjen (predznanstveni) etimološki slovarja kakega slovanskega jezika, prva izdaja slovnice Kraynska grammatika (1768) in štiri izdaje učbenika Abecedika (1765, 1789, 1794 in 1798). Slovar obsega 13.433 slovarskih sestavkov, in sicer 12.229 polnih (356 lastnoimenskih), med katerimi je 11.774 enobesednih in 455 dvo- ali večbesednih, ter 1204 kazalčnih. V prvem dodatku so besede razvrščene glede na izbrane besednovrstne podkategorije, v drugem pa v pomenska polja. Pohlinovo jezikoslovno delo je imelo sicer precejšen, a po svoji vrednosti vendarle premajhen vpliv na poenotenje in standardizacijo slovenskega knjižnega jezika v 19. stoletju. Če bi Pohlinovi sodobniki in njihovi nasledniki cenili njegovo delo po dejanski vrednosti, bi danes kavču rekli leníšče, šefici poročníca, indijskim oreškom epātke, sinovi hčerki pa sȋnkinja

V osrednjih treh poglavjih je obravnavano postopno oblikovanje slovanskih jezikov znotraj treh osnovnih slovanskih makroarealov (južna, vzhodna in zahodna slovanščina), v dodatnem poglavju pa še delitev slovenskih in osrednjejužnoslovanskih, predvsem kajkavskih narečij, pri čemer je posebna pozornost namenjena slovensko-osrednjejužnoslovanski zemljepisni jezikovni meji. Delo je hkrati tudi prispevek k splošni teoriji in metodologiji genealoškega jezikoslovja, ki ju je mogoče aplicirati tudi na drugo jezikovno gradivo

    Abstract: The main part of the monography ('Proto-Slavic Masculine i-Nouns in Slovenian Literary Language of the 16th Century') is the analyze of the reflexes of Proto-Slavic i-stem nouns of masculine gender in Slovenian literary language of the 16th century.The Proto-Slavic i-stem nouns of masculine gender in Slovenian literary language of the 16th century can reflect as nouns of o-stem masculine, i-stem feminine, i-stem masculine (gospod "sir", ljudje "people", partly also, pot "path"), u-stem (circumflected monosyllables), a-stem and in the plural mixed i-stem and o-stem (masculine) or mixed i-stem and o-stem (miš ˮmouseˮ) declension. Mostly the reflexes of i-stem declension are limited to individual case form and are not reflected in the overall paradigm. There is the increased conservation of i-stem declension in plural while in the singular the transition to o-stem patterns is larger
    Abstract: Osrednji del monografije je analiza odrazov praslovanskih ijevskih samostalnikov moškega spola v slovenskem knjižnem jeziku 16. stoletja. Praslovanski ijevski samostalniki moškega spola se v tem obdobju lahko odražajo v ojevski (moški), ijevski ženski, ijevski moški (gospod, ljudje, deloma pot), ujevski (cirkumflektirane enozložnice) in ajevski sklanjatvi. V množini se lahko odražajo tudi v mešani ijevsko-ojevski sklanjatvi (moški spol) ali mešani ijevsko-ajevski sklanjatvi (miš). Večina odrazov ijevske sklanjatve je omejenih na posamezne sklonske oblike in se ne odražajo v vsej paradigmi. Več odrazov ijevske sklanjatve je v množini, med tem ko je v ednini večji vpliv ojevske sklanjatve. V obravnavanem obdobju je 55 samostalnikov, ki so odraz praslovanskih ijevskih samostalnikov moškega spola: cesar, čmrlj, črv, dever, drob, glad, gnus, golob, gos, gospod, gost, gozd, hot, jagned, jastreb, kmet, kol, labod, laket, ljudje, los, luč, medved, miš, molj, mozelj, možgani, noht, ogel, ogenj, olov, os, pastir, peč, pečat, pelin, plat, pleš, pleša, pot, razpot, risa, seženj, snet, srd, sred, tast, tat, trst, zet, zver, žal, želod, žerjav, žolč

Z upoštevanjem strogih metodoloških načel, zasnovanih izrecno za preučevanje občutljivega jezikovnega gradiva, raziskava poskuša eksaktno odgovoriti na vprašanje, katera antična in sodobna zemljepisna lastna imena je mogoče v etimološkem smislu z večjo ali manjšo gotovostjo opredeliti kot izvorno galska.     Abstract: The monograph ('Quantificational Aspects of Logical Form in Minimalist Program') argues that it is possible to view the Logical Form (LF) of the Minimalist Program and Semantic Form (SF), (implicitly) introduced by virtually all semantic theories, as identical. It does this by (i) defining language L*, a plural-logic extension of the first-order predicate logic, which is rich enough to express the meaning of English superlative determiner (SD) 'most', and (ii) constructing an isomorphism between LF and L*-encoded SF.Empirically, the introduction of L* is supported by an original cross-linguistic prediction claiming that a language having an English-like SD also has a definite determiner (DD), like English 'the'. The prediction is most strongly corroborated by Macedonian/Bulgarian, which is the only Slavic language having the DD.The main features of the constructed isomorphism are the following. Variables of L* correspond to sequences of functional projections in head-complement relation. Predicates of L* correspond to (conceptual and) formal features of LF. Feature projection in LF is predication in L*. There are no explicit quantifiers in LF/L*: the scope of quantifiers is predictable from the occurrences of variables.Finally, the monograph provides the syntactic/semantic analysis of a wide range of constructions, the emphasis being on superlative and comparative constructions, and focus
    Abstract: Monografija dokazuje, da sta skladenjska ravnina minimalistične teorije jezika, imenovana logična oblika (LF), in pomenska ravnina, ki jo (implicitno) uvajajo skoraj vse pomenoslovne teorije, ena in ista ravnina. To stori tako, da (i) definira logični jezik L*, pluralno razširitev predikatne logike prvega reda, ki ima dovolj izrazne moči za zapis pomena angleškega presežniškega določilnika 'most', ter (ii) izdela izomorfizem med LF in pomensko ravnino, temelječo na jeziku L*.Empirično je uvedba jezika L* podprta z izvirno medjezikovno napovedjo, ki trdi, da vsak jezik s presežniškim določilnikom angleškega tipa pozna tudi določni določilnik (v angleščini 'the'). This is a set of findings about the functioning of the universe and rules derived from them. When people verbalize these findings in a narrative, a mythical story occurs. A mythical landscape is a form of the cultural landscape that people created in accordance with their mythical conceptions that they could master the forces of nature with its help. From individual structures of the text fragments of Slavic folk traditions, a composite story in many versions is made, which explains the mechanism of renewal and describes the cyclical changes of the nature.     Abstract: Tako kot biološki genom določa našo biološko pojavnost, kulturni genom določa našo kulturno pojavnost. To je skupek spoznanj o delovanju sveta in iz njih izpeljanih pravil. Ko ljudje ta spoznanja ubesedijo v pripoved, nastane mitična zgodba. Mitična pokrajina je tista oblika kulturne pokrajine, ki so jo ljudje oblikovali v skladu s svojimi mitičnimi predstavami, da bi z njeno pomočjo obvladali sile narave. Avtor iz posameznih struktur besedilnih odlomkov slovanskega folklornega izročila sestavi povezano pripoved v številnih različicah, ki pojasnjuje mehanizem prenavljanja in opisuje ciklične spremembe narave. To pripoved so ljudje uporabljali kot miselni model in ga v prostoru materializirali v prostorske ideograme. Te z nekaj primeri raziskuje naslednji del. Zaključek pridobljena spoznanja primerja z zgodnjesrednjeveškim Zbruškim idolom iz Ukrajine in ugotovi popolno strukturno ujemanje. Zbruški idol kaže prostorsko ureditev vesolja s tremi svetovi, mehanizme nadzora teh svetov in vrstenje naravnih in življenjskih sprememb

    Abstract: V monografiji avtor pokaže, da prehod iz obdobja protestantizma v katoliško dobo z vidika zgodovine jezikoslovja in rabe jezike ni bil tako oster, kot bi lahko sodili na podlagi nekaterih kulturnozgodovinskih dejstev. Izročilo jezika slovenskih protestantskih piscev se je namreč iz različnih vzrokov ohranjalo tudi v obravnavani dobi. Monografija obsega več vsebinskih sklopov. Najprej preveri, kako se je nadaljevalo izročilo slovenskih protestantskih piscev in kakšna pota je ubiral slovenski jezik v katoliški dobi. Opredeli sociolingvistične in zvrstnostne značilnosti jezikovnega gradiva, ki ga ima na voljo raziskovalec tega obdobja, ter pokaže, kako so se jeziki rabili glede na družbene položaje. Pregleda tudi, kako so slovenščino rabili v šolstvu, cerkvi in začetkih gledališke dejavnosti. Osrednji del raziskave je namenjen pregledu slovnic, nastalih v tem obdobju.
