Abstract: The present catalogue is the second of three volumes which record the books printed before 1801 currently held by the legal historical section of the Biblioteca di Scienze Sociali of the Università degli Studi di Firenze. This volume encompasses 2,424 editions published between 1601 and 1700. The present Florence library is the successor to that of the Facoltà di Giurisprudenza, the nucleus of which is the historic collection of the Collegio degli Avvocati di Firenze acquired in 1924. Supplemented by further important acquisitions, including the library of the Corte d'Appello, the collection has come to be numbered among the foremost in its field in Italy. The 17th century volume reflects primarily the Jurisprudence of the Baroque, the vast production of the jurists of Spain and Italy, but is by no means lacking in editions of the foremost jurists of contemporary Northern Europe

Abstract: This volume aims at becoming a basic scientific text; by studying the biomechanics of a healthy spine and carrying out a morpho-functional examination of the subject, the possible risks of mechanical damage causing back pain (BP) are analysed, and the preventive and compensatory motor activities for BP are shown in the context of daily life and work activities. The text is up to date on methodological notions and criteria, in particular on the C.A.MO.® method. It offers a broad general cultural platform, and largely fulfils the information requests of fundamental sectors, such as orthopaedics, sports medicine, physiotherapy, kinesiology, sports preparation, work ergonomics

Abstract: This work analyzes the evolution of the German Democratic Republic during 1971-1985, with particular attention to the economic sphere, relations with the Soviet Union and the Federal Republic of Germany, and the impact that changes in the international economic system have they had on these plans. The basic question concerns the actual degree of subordination of the GDR to the USSR: absolute for traditional historiography, which denies the possibility of an East German foreign policy, relative to the light of archival documents, which show a framework of bilateral relations constantly affected by tensions. In addition to analyzing the relationships in an unequal alliance between center and periphery, the study of the decision-making mechanisms internal to the GDR and the effectiveness of a system in which politics dictated the priority in terms of economic choices are at the center of this volume

Abstract: The growing complexity of production phenomena is causing a progressive expansion of culpable liability assumptions. In particular, the jurisprudence dealing with long-term diseases bases the culpable reproach on scientific knowledge gained in a later period, thus operating a destructuring of the constitutive profiles of the 〈i〉crimen culposum〈/i〉. The work intends to investigate the complex relationship between guilt and scientific progress, highlighting the continuous dialogue between doctrine and jurisprudence, with particular attention to the implications of risk criminal law and precautionism. The search for a new typicality of culpable reproach does not ignore the recent legislative developments aimed at giving meaning to guidelines and protocols

Abstract: By summarising some selected bachelor and master's degree theses, the volume offers an overview of the study activities conducted within the Degree courses in Planning of the University of Florence, Empoli Campus. The different sections constituting the work highlight a multi-scale and multidisciplinary work methodology, which feeds on an approach mainly based on the importance given to the value of places and of specific territorial contexts. The result is an original picture of contributions, representing a potentially innovative way for the comparison of territorial and urban studies with the various operational dilemmas which arise at the intersection between the drafting of policies, the construction of long-lasting territorial projects and the local development guidelines

Abstract: In “Poetics”, Aristotle accepts history among the possible themes for poetry, on the condition that the poet reaches the universal plane by narrating events which comply with the rules of 〈i〉eikos〈/i〉 and of 〈i〉anankaion〈/i〉. With the alteration of Athens’s history in the dialogue “Menexenus” and Solon’s poem on Atlantis in the dialogue “Critias”, Plato precedes Aristotle’s reflection and gives historical narration a central role in the citizens' paideia. In the 5th century, Greek poetry on historical subjects, from Aeschylus’s piece “The Persians” to the poem “The Persians” by Timotheus of Miletus, anticipated and put into practice the themes which Plato and Aristotle would later argument on s theorethical level, namely: the intertwining between the particular of history and the universal of poetry, the models for the 〈i〉mimesis〈/i〉, the audience’s reaction spacing between 〈i〉eleos〈/i〉, 〈i〉phobos〈/i〉 and 〈i〉geloion〈/i〉

Abstract: The volume contains articles concerning the influence of 〈i〉Latinitas〈/i〉 in the territory now occupied by Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine and Belarus’. The articles, all published in English, range from history to literature and to cultural history and the history of ideas. They analyze the issue of building an identity, either real or imagined, from different points of view. Among the most interesting topics are the classical origins of myths and ideas that have helped build the national identities of those that constituted the ethnic mosaic of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the role of Neo-Latin poetry, as a conveyor of 〈i〉Latinitas〈/i〉, in the development of national identities. Because of the significance of 〈i〉Latinitas〈/i〉 for both common European cultural traditions and the national cultures, literatures and languages of Belarus, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Ukraine, it is to be hoped that the subject will continue to attract a good level of attention in the future

Abstract: Telling music with science. It is the challenging goal behind 〈i〉Revealing Ravel: science tells Bolero〈/i〉, musical piece for reciting voice, multimedia and orchestra on the notes of the French composer. The author and protagonist is Luigi Dei, professor of Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry "Ugo Schiff". Dei deals with an unusual approach with the composition of Maurice Ravel, alongside the Symphonic Orchestra of the Conservatory "Luigi Cherubini", conducted by Maestro Paolo Ponziano Ciardi: for science, in fact, music is energy that propagates through matter thanks to vibrations generated by the instruments which, with appropriate resonances, generate timbres, rhythm, melody and harmony. The 〈i〉Bolero〈/i〉, a piece of music particularly suited to understanding the wonder behind sound production, is read as a fantastic fairy tale. The musical piece, which consolidates the collaboration between two important cultural institutions of the Florentine territory, the University and the Conservatory, combines acting and listening to live communication through images thanks to a multimedia system by the Multimedia Content Production Service of the University

Abstract: The contributions collected in this volume are the result of the seminars organized by the Laboratory of Modern History during its ten-year activity (from 2003 to 2013) within the Department of Historical and Geographical Studies (now called SAGAS Department) of the University of Florence. Thanks to the participation of Italian and international colleagues, as well as young scholars, this annual cycle of seminars, entitled 〈i〉Temi e problemi della storia moderna〈/i〉 (“Themes and problems of Modern History”), aims at encouraging the scientific community to discuss and reflect critically on topics of great historical importance. The theme of otherness is central in the Modern Age as well as in in the contemporary world, and it has been the subject of several seminars. The essays reconstruct significant moments and aspects of the relationships with “the other” in modern Europe: political models and cultural paradigms, cities of refuge and institutes of conversion, attitudes showing integration and/or exclusion of the Jews, Muslims, heretics and foreigners have been analysed in the volume according to the Laboratory’s 'pluralistic spirit’

Abstract: The overbearing affirmation of the body, with its instincts and impulses, and an effort aimed at suppressing that same push: this powerful dialectic deeply marks Beckett's works, and becomes a crucial reflection of the more general tension between a vain waiting for the end and the need to move forward. The close investigation of the texts suggests a special link with the thought of Arthur Schopenhauer, revealing in particular the contiguity between the concept of 〈i〉Noluntas〈/i〉 and the search, by many of Beckett's characters, for “will-lessness”, a peculiar state of quiet and abstraction from reality. Starting from these observations, this study investigates the theme of the body within Beckett's poetics, especially in light of his relationship with the Schopenhauer's Will theory

Abstract: This volume is dedicated to the Anthropological and Ethnological section of the Natural History Museum. First the historical journey of the collections is traced from the antique nucleus of the Medici to the foundation of the National Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, when Florence was the capitol of Italy, and the discipline of anthropology was born. The second part illustrates the multivariate collections from all over the globe. They are a precious record of the past and present biological and cultural diversity of our species opening wide horizons that rigorously connect science to the many faces of human culture, including art. The third section is dedicated to current research and opens new prospectives on the significance of ethnological and anthropological collections due to new technology and in light of a new appreciation of the museum as a living “zone of contact”

The project involved various partners, whose skills enabled the activity to take an integrated, multi-disciplinary bent; the University of Florence Department of Farming and Forestry Economics, Engineering, Science and Technology – DEISTAF – took responsibility for the scientific side, while the local partners counted the municipality of San Godenzo, L'Unione dei Comuni della Montagna Fiorentina and the Consorzio Marrone del Mugello IGP. The general aim of the whole research project was to prepare guidelines for the endogenous and sustainable development of outlying areas, while extending knowledge of a fundamental aspect of farming, the primary activity, namely its multiple functions

Abstract: This thesis work intends to provide a contribution in the field of research on Stefan Zweig through the in-depth study of his most famous and emblematic biographies that made the writer's fortune worldwide in the 1930s. During the research, it emerged that Zweig's biographies represent a field that has remained largely unexplored. In addition to interviews with specialists, this aspect is confirmed by the limited number of studies relating to this topic, appeared mostly in the form of not always exhaustive journal articles. Particularly, the biographies dedicated to the two queens Marie Antoinette and Maria Stuart are little taken into account, as well as the biographical study focused on the French poet Marceline Desbordes-Valmore. From the in-depth analysis of scientific sources it becomes also clear how the terminology with which these works are indicated is problematic, in that we sometimes speak of “biography” and sometimes of “novel”; sometimes these two terms appear interchangeable within a same work. With this work, an attempt was therefore made to resolve this dilemma in favour of the concept of “biography”, a term which, due to its hybridity, appears not only more adequate but above all conforming to the writer's statements

Abstract: Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, the elites (secular and ecclesiastical) of the many villages, castles, smaller urban centres that make the Italian landscape so unique, started to deeply rethink the past of their “small homeland”. Roman (but also pre-Roman) heritage and medieval tradition are at the centre of interest; bold “inventions” and manipulations alternate with searches for a solid erudite structure. The essays published here concern the Italian regions of Piedmont, Romagna, Emilia, Tuscany, Marche, Umbria, Terra di Bari, Campania. In the essays, a strong sense of identity and a robust self-awareness emerges; ultimately, this is the vitality of a connective tissue of settlements featuring an “original character” relevant in the Italian historical events from the Middle Ages to the present day

Abstract: The volume analyses the theme of "business risk" with an original and interdisciplinary approach from a dual point of view: the control and internal management of risks by the company, and the criteria for imputing liability for damages relating to the carried out activity. On the first point, consideration is given to the obligations of preparing adequate organizational models to prevent damage, even in situations of "unknown technology", and initiatives aimed at encouraging "socially responsible" conduct, such as ethical codes. On the other point, there are the problems relating to the most effective civil liability models to allocate the cost of harmful events on the subject who created the relative risk and not on the victim who suffers from them or on the community. In the second part of the volume, the topic is addressed with particular reference to the environment sector, which is the most profitable and also the current laboratory for testing the interconnections between prevention and fixing, conduct obligations and rules of responsibility, to the extent that the economic costs are charged to the operator in order to prevent, reduce or eliminate damage to the environment

Abstract: With the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Dessí’s birth approaching, in 2009, the Committee in charge of the celebrations launched in a widespread dissemination activity of the writer's work in many European countries. And since the translations (the main objective of the project) required a complex knowledge of the author, his style, the dialogue and the difference with the reference culture, it was suggested to study and promote them not only through the reconstruction of the history and typicality of the author’s narrative path, but also through the reconstruction of his scarce reception abroad within the framework, in the case of Dessí, of the presence, outside national borders, of Italian literature in the second half of the 20th century. Through the examination of books, editorial catalogues, magazines, anthologies, and thanks to the commitment of scholars and young collaborators of Italian and foreign universities, it is now France, England, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Finland, Sweden and many more at the centre of the attention, with their reading preferences and aversions, together with Italy, and with the themes, stories, characters of the writer to whom this book is dedicated

Abstract: In the first pages of the 〈i〉Zibaldone〈/i〉, Leopardi had noted that the "love of learning" induces a passion for philosophy, making it a foundational element of modern culture. In this perspective, then, no doubt remains as to the prominent position of Voltaire’s 〈i〉Candide〈/i〉, or of Rousseau’s thought, which combines philosophical thinking, educational demands, political passion and autobiography. However, in order to move from the count to the novel, from the apologue and from the treatises to complex characters who also maintain a strong and speculative 〈i〉allure〈/i〉, one had to leave the 18th century, experience Romanticism, feed the 〈i〉rêveries〈/i〉 of the new 〈i〉promeneurs solitaires〈/i〉 during the following century, with the restlessness and the questions of Dostoevsky, Kafka, Sartre, Camus, and of Pirandello, Proust, Musil and many others; of those who combined the passion for short stories with the unmasking of any deceptive theodicy. Bringing the the novel back to bourgeois intertwining and existential anxieties, starting from Cervantes’s ironic way of thinking. In the absence of declarations, however, where does one find the evidence of the presence of the 〈i〉philosophique〈/i〉 in the novel, or how does one identify texts pertaining to the definition of 〈i〉roman philosophique〈/i〉? This book, conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi, does not only raises the problem, but tries to solve it as well. At the same time, it brings the ideas of the novel and from the novel together with constructive theories, and compares the insignificant with significance, mythical emblems and codes, semiosis and destiny, while also observing how language, in the parade of the authors, changes itself and even touches the figurativeness of the 〈i〉graphic-novel〈/i〉. This volume constitutes the final point of arrival of a path which, in samples, locks significant fragments in the otherwise infinite kaleidoscope of narration

Abstract: This volume collects the interventions of the post-doctoral fellows and PhD students of the University of Cluj Napoca, the University of Bucharest and the University of Florence (Mediterranean Cultures; Doctoral School of Comparative Languages, Literatures and Cultures, specialisation in Language, Literature, Philology: Intercultural Perspectives) presented in occasion of the seminar 〈i〉Storia, identità e canoni letterari〈/i〉 (“History, identity and literary canons”, Florence, 22-23 November 2011). The contributions are centred on the idea of canon, as a cultural construct founding modern national identities. Another trace is the literary and cultural hybridisations between different geographies. For the Romanian context, the contributions pay particular attention to the movements of the avant-garde of the early 1900s. Some contributions account for the most problematic aspects of the contemporary world using interdisciplinary approaches

Abstract: Jorge Eduardo Eielson (Lima 1924 - Milan 2006) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, Peru, 1936; Winner of the Nobel prize in 2010) are certainly two 'exemplary Peruvians', as they have both started by digging into the history and social conflicts of their country, before opening up to global culture and reality with an interdisciplinary and intercultural spirit: Vargas Llosa did so using fiction, theatre, non-fiction and journalism; Eielson used poetry, the visual arts, non-fiction and journalism. The volume offers a rich itinerary starting from an interview with Vargas Llosa by José Miguel Oviedo (Florence, 2008), and then goes through individual aspects of the work by the two authors. It is then accompanied by photographic records and a DVD with an elaboration of Eielson's visual works, paintings and poems

Abstract: The archaeology of the 〈i〉graphic novel〈/i〉 does not shed light on the historical origins of the comic book; on the contrary, it tries to discover the conceptual genesis of this narrative form. If the research methodology is archaeological, in fact, the theoretical approach is the same as neuro-narratology, in the light of which four important stages are suggested. These stages define the comic novel as a "natural" literary genre, a mimesis of the process transposing reality into images and constituting the basis of thought. The figure of Rodolphe Töpffer is not excluded from this process. Thanks to his theories and his work, he leads us to hypothesize that the comic book was more "novelistic" at its origin than it is in its current forms: the path to the novel, then, would not be so much of an evolution, but rather a return to the origins

Abstract: Our health is largely linked to our actions, habits and lifestyles. This implies greater personal and responsibility and, at an institutional level, the possibility and the obligation to act to prevent diseases and promote a healthy behaviour. Persuasive communication is one of the main tools for pursuing this goal. In fact, it has proven effective in promoting a change in attitudes, intentions and behaviours. Given these assumptions, the research investigates the possibility of simultaneously using two of the most effective communication strategies (〈i〉fear appeal〈/i〉 is 〈i〉message framing〈/i〉), evaluating which combination is more persuasive in promoting important preventive behaviour, such as the use of sunscreen

Abstract: The third volume of 〈i〉Saggi di anglistica e americanistica〈/i〉 is the last in the series published under the aegis of the University of Florence PhD course in English and American Studies which, after 25 years, will terminate its activities in 2013. This last collection once again attests to the worth of the PhD's educational programme and aims: it brings together the essays produced by ten young scholars over the last three years of research, in view of preparing their PhD dissertations. They are essays that range from literary phenomena and their historic, linguistic and socio-cultural contexts, to problems posed by texts from Anglo-American to South African, Australian and Caribbean cultures, confirming the variety of the Florence PhD students' research interests and approaches. 〈p〉〈p〉 〈a rel="license" href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.5/it/"〉〈img alt="Creative Commons License" style="border-width:0" src="http://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-nc-nd/2.5/it/88x31.png" /〉〈/a〉〈br /〉〈span xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" href="http://purl.org/dc/dcmitype/Text" property="dc:title" rel="dc:type"〉Saggi di anglistica e americanistica.

Abstract: City and territory are currently experiencing a phase of development, or crisis, depending on whether they manage to form the know-how to respond to the current exponential evolution. Know-how that has to make a critical assessment of the fabric of structures, cultures and inherited layouts. Between continuity and innovation, contemporary town planning culture creates the basis for a more flexible model that can seek out new continuities by interpreting the present discontinuity, dissent, difference, decentralization and dispersion. This implies a processual space and new aesthetics of sense and therefore presupposes new themes able to redefine the physical-relational relationships by combining cultural roots, functional requirements and spatial layouts

Abstract: The book begins with a detailed description of the characteristics of the photosynthetic apparatus and the processes that take place there, to then present the general principles of fluorescence. After that, it gives a description of the characteristics of direct and modulated fluorescence and a presentation of the shared and distinctive parameters of these two techniques. Then a brief presentation is made of other innovative approaches to the analysis of fluorescence (〈em〉Chlorophyll Fluorescence Imaging〈/em〉 - CFI, P700 absorbance, delayed fluorescence) and the relative tools. An important part of the book comprises a description of the possible applications of fluorescence techniques for the analysis of various types of stress (aridity, strong light radiations, UV, high and low temperatures, salinity, weedkillers, pollution, etc.) and, consequently, their possible use in agriculture, forestry and to protect the environment

Abstract: Pantaleoni and Pareto re-established economic theory on the basis of 〈i〉homo oeconomicus〈/i〉 which, despite criticisms, went on to become a strangely popular concept, not only among economists, but even in common parlance, where it has assumed a confusing variety of meanings. With a view to setting things in order, this book distinguishes: the 〈i〉methodological hypotheses〈/i〉, which could possibly be corrected on the basis of new economic psychology; the 〈i〉weak anthropologies〈/i〉, retrievable as 'given abstractions' within typical contexts; and finally the 〈i〉extreme versions〈/i〉, that reduce human nature to absolute egoism. The author makes a radical criticism of the latter, drawing upon the extensive tools derived from psychology, philosophical anthropology and political philosophy, and thus succeeds in demonstrating their lack of empirical foundation, their conceptual inconsistency and their ideological dangerousness

Abstract: The coming of Greece under Roman rule marks the beginning of a series of political, administrative and most of all religious transformations, with particular regard to the diffusion across the Greek world of the Imperial Cult as an instrument of territorial cohesion. The present study focuses on a specific period, the second century AD, during which the Panhellenion, a league that incorporates those populations which share a connection with the traditional Greek world, is founded under the auspices of the emperor Hadrian. The analysis of the construction of a new Greek identity has its focus on the Panhellenion, the creation of which stems from the exchange between the imperial power and the city-elites, and on the means employed by the various cities for the renegotiation of their own indentity

For every actor AMAtI offers a complete original and up-to-date profile, bibliography, list of sources, and a detailed selection of data on his/her career and single performances. Documents, images and multi-media material (video and audio), linked to the collected information, can be viewed in order to provide a more in-depth rundown on each actor. It is also possible to research single performances independently, how characters have been interpreted over time, as well as theatre companies and historical theatres

Abstract: The dissertation deals with the contemporary city soundscape and fits into the disciplinary field of sensuous urbanism, soundscape studies and emotional geography. The key term, 〈i〉soundscape〈/i〉, is to be understood as all the sounds that surround us, as a perceptual theme, that is, object of a subject's perception, in its sense of 'landscape' including the metaphorical meaning of an emotional or mnemonic emotional soundscape. The dissertation is structured in two parts: the first and second chapters define the disciplinary spheres of sensory urbanism and soundscape studies, while the third and fourth chapters explore the forms that classical sound environment analysis and planning tools take on within the aforesaid disciplinary fields. Finally, the conclusions give a methodological indication aimed at favouring the integration of soundscape studies within the town planning discipline, and propose «tender sound map» and «sound niche» operating tools to help achieve the goal of planning the contemporary city's physical and sound spaces at the same time

Abstract: The book aims to study the relationship between the contractual instrument and succession law, in order to identify the categories into which the general device of the succession contract currently seems to be divided. The book starts from an analysis of the 'bans' on succession settlements as per art. 458 of the Italian Civil Code, before going on to examine the categories of 'alternative instruments to wills' and 'exceptionally admitted 〈i〉mortis causa〈/i〉 deeds (other than wills)' (that is, the first two forms taken on by the wide-ranging genus of contracts for the purpose of succession). Then it deals with the institution of the 'family settlement' (articles 768-bis of the Italian Civil Code), a device which can be traced back to the phenomenon of 'anticipated succession' (constituting the 'third form' of contracts for the purpose of succession). Having clarified the regulations as well as giving a systematic outline of the institution, the analysis then concentrates on the relationship between the aforesaid contract and the sphere of 'necessary succession'. The concluding part of the book contains an outline of a set of applicative models for the category of anticipated succession; additional innovative models distinct from the current formulation in articles 768-bis et seq. of the Italian Civil Code, which therefore enable the interpreter to make out, from a de 〈i〉jure condendo〈/i〉 perspective, the possible lines of development both of contracts for the purpose of succession and for necessary succession

Abstract: In the current socio-cultural scenario, the implementation of the university reform aimed at boosting third-level education calls for meditation within the discipline of Architectural Technology (ICAR 12). This review must address the research topics and academic profiles of PhD courses in the Technological Area, also in terms of fostering actions consistent with European strategic lines for the promotion of a knowledge society. Research, innovation, creativity and design are the keywords of this scenario that PhD students and lecturers must bear in mind when considering three fields of study: environmental design and landscape, building production and construction and works and services strategic for the community. This book "Research among innovation, creativity and design" develops the topics addressed during the VII OSDOTTA workshop (the network of PhD courses in the field of Architectural Technology) held at the Mantua campus of Milan Polytechnic on 15th-16th-17th September 2011

Abstract: Cut-stone constructions are made of pre-hewn blocks dry assembled on top of each other. Owing to the formal complexity characteristic of these works, in order to design them it is necessary to have knowledge of the theory of lines, surfaces and their properties, as well as knowledge of the representation methods capable of rendering them on a plane surface. This knowledge set makes stereotomy the science that anticipates, in terms of theory and tools, modern descriptive geometry. These are the reasons for seeking the beginnings of descriptive geometry in stereotomy, that is, the reasons for the transformation of the mason's art of cutting stone into a bona fide science. Frézier's work fits among the last theoretical essays prior to the 〈i〉géométrie descriptive〈/i〉 of Gaspard Monge. It is a treaty on solid geometry, devoted to the shape of the bodies, their intersections and the graphical methods necessary to represent them on a plane. In it the author draws up a rigorous theory that puts in place over two centuries of knowledge and experimentation on the subject of cutting stones

Abstract: This work asks questions on the relationship between innovative collective actors, such as the 'new social movements' and the political institutions of representative democracy starting from an underlying hypothesis: the idea that civil society is the main source of political legitimation of liberal democracy. More precisely, what this monograph reflects on is the capacity of the social movements to concretely test alternative forms of democracy. The aim of the contemporary movements is to augment the fundamental values of the "democratic revolution", namely the principles of freedom and equality. They constantly lead to conflict and social antagonism: indeed new conflicts and new antagonisms arise every time that the movements implement radical experiences of democracy in the multiple and different spheres of social life. Only by accepting and setting value by these alternative democratic practices and experiences – and this is the author of this work's thesis – may democratic ideals be revived in contemporary society

Abstract: The Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo d'Asburgo Lorena, is one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific museums in the world. The fourth volume on the Collections of the Mineralogy and Lithology Section, published like the previous volumes by the Firenze University Press, fits perfectly in the series dedicated to the collections of the University's Museum System. The first part of the book describes in great detail the paths that led to the formation of the collections, starting with those dating to the Medici period and arriving at the specimens collected during recent expeditions. The second part illustrates and documents the extraordinary specimens of minerals, hardstone carvings and meteorites which represent the material patrimony of this section. Particular attention is given to the holotypes, the Elban Collection and the minerals of pegmatites, as well as the methods and solutions adopted to realize the project of the new museum exhibition set-up. The third and last part describes the studies carried out on the materials: from the minerals of the systematic collections to the rock specimens that recount not only the geodiversity of a region but also the history of a city

Abstract: A subject that is inexplicably little studied at present, or indeed not at all, is that of the quest for possible applications and feasible objectives in the energy requalification of existing buildings, existing or planned open spaces, old city centres and the monumental and diffuse cultural heritage. At the present time it is crucial that the issues, research and techniques linked to the possibilities of an aware use of energy are applied to the old city centres and the existing heritage. This must start from a knowledge and investigation of the traditional building materials and techniques, which are in themselves inherently sustainable (comprising both the ancient city and the consolidated modern city and their historic stratifications). The historic environment indeed represents an infinite cultural and environmental resource and a very high percentage of the global architectural heritage

Abstract: Based loosely on Primo Levi's 〈i〉Il Sistema Periodico〈/i〉, the play is set in a 〈i〉Fahrenheit 451〈/i〉 scenario. In this world without either books or memory, a man of the street arrives with a bundle of not easily decipherable papers: with the help of the narrative voice, of his friends – Science, Technology and Nature – and of two actors at length off-stage, Primo and his friend Alberto, the man succeeds in reconstructing the episode of the story 〈i〉Cerio〈/i〉. Through memory he thus reconstructs the lost identity, that is our history. Science, Technology and Nature allow the man without memory to master scientific knowledge and free himself from his state. The drama finds its catharsis in a poignant passage, inspired by the story 〈i〉Carbonio〈/i〉, which lyrically sets up a temporal link between an atom of carbon from the smoke of a crematorium and the same dwelling within the body of each one of us: a poetic parabola of a science immersed in the life and history of man. 〈iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/rg8TZA7vnz8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen〉〈/iframe〉

Abstract: Seven European Regional Governments, together with Earlall and universities and research centres, have undertaken to refine a first draft of a 〈i〉Joint Progress Report of Regions on Implementation of European Lifelong Learning Strategies〈/i〉 in the perspective of the Europe 2020 Strategy. The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the usefulness and need to make an instrument available to European Regional Governments that helps to understand and evaluate the educational conditions of the regional population when compared with other regions. The Report shows how, over the decade, all the Regional Governments have undertaken to adapt training systems to the demographic dynamics characterised by the general ageing of the population and by migratory phenomena. Simultaneously the Report also shows the need for urgent improvements in some fields where the impact of policies is still too modest and where the risk of stagnation must be dealt with (for example, lifelong learning policies and NEET reduction)

Abstract: This book is centred on the proposal of a new organic criminal discipline for sexual offences in Italy. The Foreword introduces innovative concepts and 'general' breakdowns relating to sexual criminal law. Chapter 1 then addresses a critical analysis of the current discipline, pursuant to articles 609-bis and following of the Criminal Code and the related case law. Chapter 2 tables an in-depth comparative analysis of the legislation governing sexual offences in Germany, Portugal, France and England, which is also extended to legal theory and practice. Chapter 3 then presents, complete with detailed commentary, an organic project of reform for Italian legislation, characterised by a total discontinuity with the current discipline, where the principal incriminations hinge upon the mere 'sexual dissent' of the victim, breaking down different types of sexually relevant behaviour that are at present all lumped in together in the melting-pot of "sexual assault" into three different offences, while also introducing other incisive innovations

Abstract: Medicine has coined the concept of 'disease', but individual patients frequently present complicated cases marked by the coexistence of several conditions or syndromes. The doctor needs to reflect on this complexity because, in his daily practice, he has to address and resolve it for a correct management of the patient. This is why we must, with genuine humility, seek to share a journey in which there are no major landmarks. The authority of the various colleagues who have contributed the different chapters can offer elements of guidance that are useful in a series based on the leitmotif of the cornerstone concepts of complexity. My thanks to those who have accepted this challenge, in the sincere hope that it may enrich us – even just a little and by slow degrees – with an enhanced capacity to address the daily issue of the complexity of the sick

Abstract: For some time historiography has set itself the objective of studying the ways in which European society in the late Middle Ages and the early Modern Age has related to environmental disasters, addressing the perceptions and the reactions, the strategies implemented by the governments, and the repercussions on the religious mentality. In this way it has identified a sphere of investigation that is an authentic multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary workshop, engaging historians of institutions, culture and mentality. At the conference held in San Miniato, Italian and European historians compared notes on this subject, addressing it from different points of view and taking into consideration different environmental contexts (the cities and the rivers, the mountain, the sea, Italy, France, Holland, etc.) and different viewpoints (those of the governments, the lay 'intellectuals', the men of religion, etc.)

Abstract: The keynote of the recent history of the faculty of educational science of Florence University is change. This has emerged in response to the demands for education expressed by a new knowledge society, spawned by the processes of globalisation, and the social need to foster interculturalism and the dialogue between diversities. In this new dimension of change, education becomes the framework for preparation, but also for re-integrating and updating life itineraries that are swift and precarious, veined with insecurity and disillusionment. Even in the new approach, the scientific and cultural benchmark continues to be a consistent adherence to the secular, historic-pedagogic and educational tradition represented by the masters of the "Florence School". Since its creation in 1996, the new faculty has staked forcefully on the centrality of training in relation to the traditional focus on the professionalism of primary and secondary school teachers, and on the new extra-scholastic training issues: the educational professions; pedagogic care; the social education of adults; the technologies of education and instruction; the philosophic, sociological, psychological and anthropological dimension of education; the broad sphere of hardship and marginalisation and the different faces of diversity

Abstract: This book presents the proceedings of the conference held in Florence on 7 and 8 May 2009 upon the conclusion of a MUIR study. The inspiration behind it can be summarised in two keywords. The first is "modernity", because it focuses on the sectors of criminal liability of the doctor and the entrepreneur, those that have been most dramatically affected by social change and technological developments, straining to the limit the "classic" configuration of criminal law categories. The second is "case law", in the sense that we have sought to focus on the reality of living law and to investigate the concepts of the causality, blame and complicity of individuals as they are actually illustrated by precedents

Abstract: Adult learning is recognized as a key component of lifelong learning and Member States are required to remove barriers to participation, to increase overall quality and efficiency in adult learning, to speed up the process of validation and recognition and to ensure sufficient investment in and monitoring of the field (European Commission, 2006, 2007; European Parliament, 2008; European Council, 2008). It is unanimously recognized that adult learning can play a pivotal role in meeting the goals of the Lisbon Strategy, by fostering social cohesion, providing citizens with the skills required to find new jobs and helping Europe to better respond to the challenges of globalisation. Such needs are taken into consideration in this Volume where the main issues faced are related to what 33 European countries have been doing in order to raise the skills levels of low-skilled workers, address the problem of the high number of early school leavers, combat social exclusion, ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, quality of adult learning

Abstract: 〈b〉Realtà e memoria di una disfatta〈/b〉 does not address either the causes of the Six Day War or the consequences that the military conflict had for Israelis and Palestinians, about which much has been written. It focuses instead on the impact of the war on Arab countries, and the weighty legacy left by the defeat of 1967, which has been much less studied. There are several references to this in the short essay by Samir Kassir, 〈i〉L'infelicità araba〈/i〉, published posthumously in Italy in 2006. In his analysis, Kassir warns against falling into the dual trap that has ensnared the Arab world for the last forty years: on the one hand the Orientalist reading that lays the blame on Islam for the delayed modernisation of this part of the world, and on the other the temptation to heap responsibility for all evils on the West. To avoid this risk, as Kassir sees it, the Arabs have to take their destiny into their own hands, shrugging off victimism and coming to terms with modernity

Abstract: The idea behind this book – devoted to the relations between adults and children – emerged within a specific educational experience launched in an experimental manner in 2006 by the faculty of educational science of Florence University and now in its fourth edition. These are teaching courses held in the evening and on Saturdays to make it easier for students with daytime jobs to attend the lessons. The quest for new forms of organisation was accompanied by a meditation on teaching, which brought out several very interesting educational themes which were effectively transversal to the various disciplines. This book presents the results of this methodological approach, aimed at fostering a conscious, reflective and personal learning. As the title suggests, the essays are designed to focus the question of the educational relationship within a multidisciplinary perspective. 〈i〉Us-them〈/i〉, to remind ourselves that adults have a fundamental and inescapable responsibility. The relationship is typically asymmetrical, with special features and decidedly variable over time. It has in fact been marked for centuries by a failure to recognise the needs of the youngsters and their own subjectivity, to the point of arriving at disturbing levels of violence and coercion. Such cases have been justly referred to a 'black pedagogy', which sadly is far from being everywhere a thing of the past, and even in Italy has left deep and persistent traces. For these reasons the study of the educational relationship has numerous relevant aspects of interest, all extremely topical, and represents a fundamental argument that adults must consciously address. Educators and teachers, parents and students, can all thus enhance their sensitivity and competence with a view to consolidating the reflective practices that are now considered absolutely indispensable for those who live in contact with children and adolescents

Abstract: The Natural History Museum of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, is one of the oldest scientific museum in the world. With this third volume on the collections of the Geology and Paleontology Section, Firenze University Press continues its series dedicated to the six Sections of the Museum. The first part of the volume shows a detailed and fascinating descriptions of the history of this museum section's collections, the contribution of scholars who from the 17th century endeavoured to expand and study the Florentine geological-paleontological collections, and the importance of the collections to the development of modern geological-paleontological thinking. The second part describes and documents the collections, that are presented in geo-chronological order, divided into the Invertebrate, Vertebrate, Paleobotanical and Geological collections. In the last part are presented the most important activities and research projects, based on this important cultural heritage, carried out by the paleontologists of the University of Florence

Abstract: The gender gap that traverses the planet is one of the most blatant democratic failures, and it is no longer an additional or accessory issue but one that is crucial to the wellbeing of both men and women. The strategies of intervention mapped out in international programmes (gender mainstreaming and empowerment) underscore the commitment and the responsibilities of educational processes. The aim of the book is to stimulate reflection on the role of education in the establishment of gender identities and in fostering the human rights of women in contemporary society. With a view to an interdisciplinary feminist and feminine analysis, which is essential to the development and interweaving of gender issues and points of educational interest, the question is posed as to whether a new sensitivity and a more widespread gender culture could successfully trigger daily practices of gender-oriented education

Abstract: This book presents the most significant contributions of the fifth edition of the 〈i〉Study Days on didactic materials (foreign)〈/i〉, held on 1st June 2007 at the University of Florence, and focused on the issue of "autonomous learning". The authors come from different institutional ambits and teach a variety of languages, while they share an interest in seeking modes and means for fostering the enhanced independence of the learner in identifying and attaining his or her individual objectives in the chosen language. The contributions range from aspects relating to the development of new styles of learning to those connected with technological innovation or the deficiencies of the same, leading to a meditation on the teacher/learner relationship in a variety of educational ambits

Abstract: 〈strong〉Bruno Trentin. Lavoro, libertà, conoscenza〈/strong〉 takes into consideration the figure of Bruno Trentin (1926-2007) and his work as a union leader and politician, his numerous writings in the framework of the history of Republican Italy and the transformations induced by the processes of globalisation. From this reflection, conducted from different disciplinary angles and with different political and cultural sensitivity, what emerges clearly is the extremely idiosyncratic significance of Bruno Trentin in both the practice and the theoretical analysis of the labour struggle and the exploration of its problems. A historic contribution featuring a wealth of suggestions, intuitions and reflections, capable of interpreting events and their potential union and political repercussions, within a project for the enhancement of liberty and the social and cultural role of work conducted in an extraordinarily innovative and far-sighted manner

Abstract: Cesecom was founded by bringing together a group of scholars who are experts in the study of the several regions that are between Central Europe and Caucasus, including Central Asia. Our attention is focused on the centuries before the fall of Constantinople and the discovery of America, a fundamental period in order to understand the roots of the problems and conflicts that are still tormenting this region of the world today. CeSecom was created to meet the exigencies of scholars in order to furnish a tool for research and also provide an open space for discussions, to exchange ideas and share the outcomes of one's studies. The website will be an open resource, whose aim is to improve diverse specializations, sharing and delving in them. We hope that this initiative will meet your liking and will favor communication of our scientific work

Abstract: The urban evolution of Florence in the first thirteen centuries of its history is delineated here via a census of the archaeological finds, starting from those documented in the second half of the nineteenth century. The information has been organised and analysed through the use of Geographic Information Systems. The finds have been broken down by period and in terms of function, so as to describe, where possible, the evolution of the buildings and the public spaces and the changes in ways of living and approaches to burial, defence and production over the course of time. The Florentine data are considered within the regional and Italian framework mapped by archaeological research over the last few decades. Theme maps created using GIS further enhance the understanding of the text
