Abstract: The study investigates the relationship between Norse and Saami peoples in the medieval period and focuses on the multifaceted portrayal of Saami peoples in medieval texts. Through a systematic analysis of the sources, influenced by postcolonial methodologies rooted in interpretations of archaeological material, it demonstrates the many possibilities for reading and including Saami peoples in our narration of medieval Fennoscandian history

Abstract: The radical rupture in civilization, the future and defense of democracy, the fight against totalitarianism and mass hysteria, the commitment to human rights, and the utopian potential of literature – these were the topics that occupied the mind of Jewish author, intellectual, and US émigré Hermann Broch (1886–1951). This volume investigates the topicality of his thought in the context of interdisciplinary peace and democracy research

Abstract: The future is open: This is a basic assumption of modernity. It originated in the 18th century and still shapes our self-image today. This study uncovers another tradition: the effort to close the future again, to ‘fill it up’ with orders, models and political expectations. The theoretical and literary procedures of this closure from the period around 1800 recur in later phases of modernity as well

Abstract: Characteristic of the premodern Mediterranean world were the manifold connections between communities shaped by diverse traditions. German-speaking actors influenced these transcultural entanglements: as rulers, traders, spouses, refugees, soldiers, diplomats, prisoners, pilgrims. This volume thus inquires into the significance of the Mediterranean region for German literature and into the functions of its literary portrayals

Abstract: This volume provides a new set of methodological and theoretical approaches to the study of literary multilingualism in the age of national literature. Broader studies examine multilingual origins of seemingly monolingual national literatures. Case studies show that supposedly monolingual authors used multilingual techniques in their writing. The last part presents methods and theories to analyse multilingual texts within national literatures

Abstract: This study examines the relationship between sensory perception and exoticism in German, French, and British literature written between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its starting point is the proposition that exoticism can be described as a Western European discourse that lends actual or imagined elements of a foreign region, usually outside Europe, an unusual sensory dimension

His political work was not just limited to the Brandt era but also helped to define the Berlin Republic. By harnessing his communicative power, he shaped public discourses as an intellectual and advised top politicians, as unpublished sources and background conversations show

In a pluridisciplinary approach, the volume gathers contributions by scholars from Italy, Spain and Colombia about the vicissitudes of Hispanic books and manuscripts between the 16th and 19th centuries. Using the example of the Neo-Spanish Dominican fray Servando Teresa de Mier (1763–1827), it examines how Hispanic American writers of the transition between the early modern and modern period transgressed geographic, cultural, and discursive border regimes, thereby preparing the political and literary independency of the previous Spanish colonies

The poet's premature death, along with the otherworldly quality of many of his works, led later readers to view Li He as the emblematic cursed poet, whose lyrical fascination with ancient history, with ghosts, and with celestial and demonic beings seemed to have presaged the brevity of poet's own earthly existence

It argues that literature has evolved, and continues to evolve, in sync with material forms and formats that engage our senses in multiple ways. In telling the story of these connections, it combines an unusual bird's eye view across periods with illuminating readings of texts from (mostly) English literature

Abstract: This first German-language portrayal of Spanish literature in the digital age offers interpretations that go "against the grain." It makes no claims to academic completeness but is about the transgressive potential of Iberian authors from Cervantes to the present. Special, especially consequential texts are placed within the context of social history (e.g., of the autonomous regions) and are also discussed from a feminist and queer perspective

Abstract: Our own birth and death elude our conscious experience. The world's literatures give us the opportunity to access the beginning and end of a life, to represent, reflect upon, and (re)stage birth, life, dying, and death. This highly mobile configuration releases a tremendous creative energy, which this volume analyzes against the backdrop of the question of the knowledge of life

Abstract: This study deals with the formative powers of modern liberal ideas of private property. The liberal subject emerged with the formations of European liberalism, Atlantic slavery, and settler colonial expansion in the New World. Toni Morrison's A Mercy is thus identified as a key literary text that generates a fundamental critique of the connections between self-making and private property at its 17th-century scene

Keywords: Films, cinema ; Literature & literary studies ; Literature: history & criticism ; Literary studies: general ; Cultural studies
Abstract: At the end of the 1970s, a new genre cycle was formed in US cinema. Starting with space opera in cinema, for which George Lucas' Star Wars is paradigmatic, fantasy established itself for the first time as an independent cinematic genre in distinction from fairy tales and fantastic fiction. The enthusiasm for pen & paper role-playing games and the continuing J. R. R. Tolkien craze culminated in the following years in a series of films that absorbed, pushed and further developed the diversity of modern film technology and production: the spectrum of films ranged from live-action films (Conan the Barbarian) to puppet animation (The Dark Crystal) to animated films (The Last Unicorn), in which George Lucas as well as Jim Henson and the production companies behind them at the time played leading roles. Contemporary critics had written these films off as conservative, sometimes even reactionary genre plays. In contrast, this essay unfolds a (historical) poetics of the US fantasy film. With its film-analytical case studies, the volume shows how the films of the years 1977 to 1987 are embedded in a specific film culture and how the genre cycle as part of the Hollywood system prepared and significantly influenced the triumph of blockbuster cinema in the 1990s

Abstract: During the genesis of the Americas, "invention" was not the same thing as "discovery": what was invented preceded what was found and changed that discovery to the extent that both mutually permeated each other. This formed the foundation for both the indigenous population and their "discoverers," for deported slaves and for procured coolies. This lecture volume traces this process in detail, which still continues to this day

Abstract: The year 2019 marked the 300th anniversary of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. His novel was a huge success right away and was soon followed by bootlegs and translations. With the robinsonade, an independent genre of adventure literature was born. These contributions examine the novel within the context of bookselling history, provide new interpretations, and shed light on its multifaceted adaptation history up into the twenty-first century

Abstract: It is now recognized that emotions have a history. In this book, eleven scholars examine a variety of emotions in ancient China and classical Greece, in their historical and social context. A general introduction presents the major issues in the analysis of emotions across cultures and over time in a given tradition. Subsequent chapters consider how specific emotions evolve and change. For example, whereas for early Chinese thinkers, worry was a moral defect, it was later celebrated as a sign that one took responsibility for things. In ancient Greece, hope did not always focus on a positive outcome, and in this respect differed from what we call "hope." Daring not to do, or "undaring," was itself an emotional value in early China. While Aristotle regarded the inability to feel anger as servile, the Roman Stoic Seneca rejected anger entirely. Hatred and revenge were encouraged at one moment in China and repressed at another. Ancient Greek responses to tragedy do not map directly onto modern emotional registers, and yet are similar to classical Chinese and Indian descriptions. There are differences in the very way emotions are conceived. This book will speak to anyone interested in the many ways that human beings feel

Abstract: This handbook reviews efforts to increase the use of empirical methods in studies of the aesthetic and social effects of literary reading. The reviewed research is expansive, including extension of familiar theoretical models to novel domains (e.g., educational settings) enlarging empirical efforts within under-represented research areas (e.g., child development) and broadening the range of applicable quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., computational stylistics phenomenological methods). Especially challenging is articulation of the subtle aesthetic and social effects of literary artefacts (e.g., poetry, film). Increasingly, the complexity of these effects is addressed in multi-variate studies, including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. While each chapter touches upon the historical background of a specific research topic, two chapters address the area’s historical background and guiding philosophical assumptions. Taken together, the material in this volume provides a systematic introduction to the area for early career professionals, while challenging active researchers to develop theoretical frameworks and empirical procedures that match the complexity of their research objectives

Abstract: 2019 marked both the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and Napoléon's 250th anniversary. Picking up on this contingency of world history with an ironic wink, the volume analyses in retrospect the epoch of European universalism. It focusses on its dialectics, polemically addressing and remembering both 1769 and 1989
