Abstract: This paper focuses on the figure of the graduate Francisco de Rojas, a minor playwright from the first half of the seventeenth century who is better known for copying several theatrical manuscripts and, above all, for the presence of his handwriting in dozens of other manuscripts. The objectives of this paper are to contextualize his activity as a copyist, to systematize the nature of his interventions in the dialogues of the plays, and to point out the-often silent-influence that Rojas' amendments have had in several editions of early modern Spanish plays for over a century

Abstract: The present book investigates the social and religious history of the Portuguese-Jewish community of Hamburg during what may have been the most important period of its history - the second half of the seventeenth century. The political and economic rise of this small but influential community of New Christian bankers and merchants is analysed against the backdrop of its institutional dynamics, in an overall perspective never before conceived. The political, religious, economic, legal, charitable and disciplinary history of the community is thus explored through the analysis of the protocol books of the Portuguese Nation of Hamburg, written between 1652 and 1682. This is the intimate and fascinating journey of their everyday lives, hopes and challenges, as brought to us by their leaders.

Abstract: The topic of this publication is the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, located in the historic center of Florence, in an area between via degli Alfani, via del Castellaccio and piazza Brunelleschi. The study of the religious complex, founded in 1295, was tackled with the dual purpose to reconstruct the historical-architectural events of the last four centuries and to identify the causes of the fractionation following its suppression in 1866. The fractionation between different properties resulted in the current loss of architectural legibility of the Camaldolese monastery; for this reason one of the most important religious and cultural centers of the Florentine fourteenth-fifteenth century was almost "forgotten" not only by the citizens, but also by historiography

Abstract: Will there be any 'happy dispute' again? A debate among people holding different opinions that does not end with a repetition of the initial idea, but rather with an improvement of one's own beliefs and those of others? In order to achieve this, we need to rely on education which, through deliberative debate training activities, can foster the development of rhetorical and dialectical skills (the ability to persuade and compete) as well as critical thinking and open-mindedness (living together and cooperating). A number of scholars from around the world reflect on the topic both from a theoretical point of view - the significance of debate in a hyperconnected society - and from a practical point of view, the application of educational models and tools to measure their effectiveness

Abstract: The link between San Miniato and the Medici, started in 1448 with the financing of the aedicule destined to host the miraculous crucifix of St. John Gualberto, continued with the artistic commissions of Pope Leo X. The contribution goes in particular into the transformations that the monastic complex underwent, at the behest of the family, during the siege of Florence in 1529-30 and in the following centuries, becoming first a vast fortress, then a lazaret; until the sacred value of the site was recovered from the early eighteenth century, with the creation of the Via Crucis and through the research of the bodies of the martyrs promoted by Grand Duke Cosimo III

Abstract: This volume collects five years of studies conducted by various researchers coordinated by the author and describe the different phases of the restoration project and the construction site of Rocca San Silvestro. The restoration project developed in the awareness that the site needed, not just a set of technical operations, but also of a critical act that led to the drafting of a project not only reversible, recognizable and compatible but above all a sustainable restoration. This is to be considered as a moment of confrontation between archaeologists and architects and follows on from the book written by Andrea Arrighetti, Rocca San Silvestro: Archeology for the restoration, published in 2017

Abstract: My essay focuses on the correspondences sent to the Gonzaga of Mantua and received and preserved in the Mantuan chancery during the 14th century. The broad range of correspondences gathered in the Mantuan archives covers almost all the north and central Italy, from Tuscany to the Val d'Adige, from Genoa to Venice. Its quantity and variety open the gate to a most needed investigation of the epistolary forms of political and diplomatic communication in the 14th century, therefore fostering a better understanding of this crucial period, squeezed between the better known communal Duecento and princely Quattrocento

Abstract: A rhetorical model of the debate centered on the image of a labyrinth is more suitable than the metaphor of debate-as-game in describing the benefits of arguing in front of an audience. The labyrinth best expresses that proceeding by successive choices, coming and going, and sometimes retracing one's steps, typical of the debate activity. The basic thesis is that arguing is a continuous adaptation of one's speeches according to the audience that listens. In fact, in the labyrinth, what matters is not only arriving at the outcome - the exit or reaching the center of the structure - but the path you choose to get there is equally important. More than the definitive and winning argument, which rarely occurs in discussions, the labyrinth teaches us to recognise the plurality of approaches adopted when faced with an issue

Abstract: The paper focuses on the relationship between the Fascist regime and the administrative justice. Once identified in the "invention" of exclusive jurisdiction (over individual matters) a "revolutionary" act of the early Fascism, the paper faces the problem of the administrative litigation over public debt. The issue is treated starting from the transformation of the jurisdiction of merit in the matter of public debt into exclusive jurisdiction: a special attention is paid to the two opposite theses of the "left-wing fascism" and the Italian Constitutional Court. Subsequently, the reflection shifts to the Fascist laws that have limited or excluded since 1923 the appeal against certain administrative acts, also referring to the reactions of the doctrine of the time. A particular case concerns the vice of excess of power which, in the Fascist period, was rationalized and also took on a different meaning from the original one foreseen by the law of 1889. After the fall of Fascism, a final look is turned to the two elusive techniques of the appeal to the administrative judge represented by the laws-measure and the so called "theft of jurisdiction"

Abstract: Every tourist website employs images to attract potential tourists. In particular, destination tourism websites use environmental images, such as landscapes, to attract the attention of tourists and to address their purchase choice. Nowadays the effectiveness of these tools has been enhanced by the use of eye-tracking technology. That allows measuring the exact eye position during the visualization of images, texts, or other visual stimuli. Consequently, eye-tracking data can be processed to obtain quantitative measures of viewing behavior that can be analyzed for several purposes in many fields such as to cluster consumers, to improve the effectiveness of a website and for neuroscience studies. This work is aimed to use eye-tracking technology to investigate user behavior according to different types of images (e.g. natural landscapes, city landscapes). Specifically, we compare different statistical descriptive tools with supervised and unsupervised models. Furthermore, we discuss the effectiveness of their results and their capacity to provide satisfactory and interpretable solutions that can be used by decision-makers

Abstract: In this article I will study the hagiographic play Barlaán y Josafat, by Lope de Vega, from two different perspectives. On the one hand, I will analyze the dialogue between the two texts, as the comedia has a version transmitted by an autograph manuscript by Lope and another one transmitted through printed books and sueltas. On the other hand, I will focus my attention on the dialogues in the play, since they are useful to better understand the work of composition and preparation of the copy of the comedia by the playwright, as well as the company's work on the text

Abstract: The legend of the Flying Dutchman has undergone between 1500 and 1800 several metamorphoses. A first hint to it is to be found in the fifth canto of the Lusíadas, where Vasco da Gama's enterprise is presented as a faustian one. But only in the romantic era the legend develops all his spectacular and burlesque resources, and especially in Heine's Schnabelewopski and Wagner's Flying Dutchman

Abstract: The final chapter contains the proposal to rethink the policies for innovation based on the approach defined Design thinking. Particularly important is the introduction of concepts such as global order parameters, referring to a systemic view of the techno-economic dynamics, and of a complementary methodology, called Agile. Based on the proposed framework, the decision-making space of different actors (private, public) in pursuing objectives at different levels is then analyzed. In this way a multi-level and multi-stakeholder decision making process can be enriched through a multiplicity of indicators in order to timely verify the efficiency of implementation process

Abstract: This essay analyzes the ways in which rural lordship was legitimized, maintained and sometimes contested in the late Middle Ages. The focus is not on the local societies and the political competition within the regional state, but rather on the position of seigneurial power in the interstices of international relations. Specifically, the dynamics of the frontier allowed the lords to enforce their power, but produced situations that put their authority in risk, providing opportunities for their subjects to contrast it. Political brokerage is the key to exploring the competition and the relationship between a variety of local actors and the state authorities. The source I selected is the Carteggio sforzesco, consisting of the written correspondence between these protagonists. From this viewpoint and thanks to records rich in narrative and descriptive contents, I will try to reconstruct economic tensions, military instability, the need for diplomatic agreements and for individual protection, that define the relationship between the Duchy of Milan, Valais, Switzerland and Grisons. Finally I will go into depth in the case-study of Val Formazza, where the domination of the lords family was in decline during the 15th Century, while local protagonists of this diversified local world - highlanders of lower social conditions settled in a peripheral valley forming an ethno-cultural minority of German speakers - were capable

Abstract: Starting from the example of San Miniato al Monte, the essay dwells on the relationship existing between Florentine aristocracy and religious institutions. These were indispensable elements for the occupation of the urban 'political space', thanks to the social networks they controlled. Their political role - until now poorly investigated - was clearly recognised by the new ruling groups (Popolo). For this reason, the Florentine Popolo's regime at the end of the thirteenth century tried to break the connection between aristocratic families and religious institutions, also through the use of precise rules that had become part of the Ordinamenti di Giustizia

Abstract: The present contribution aims at discussing the many late medieval and early modern interpretations elaborated in urban and (post)communal Italy on nobility. It does so by attentively analysing the first book of the La Repubblica di Genova, written around 1550 by Uberto Foglietta, a Genoese patrician and a future historian of the city. Foglietta's libello therefore is a good starting point to reinterpret the vexata quaestio of being noble both in 16th century Genoa, and in the broader context of Renaissance Italian urban culture

Abstract: Through examples taken from comedies recently attributed to Lope de Vega, this article deals with certain problems that should be considered when studying or editing plays of doubtful authorship. The analysis focuses on methods traditionally used to resolve problematic attributions, such as the study of versification, orthoepy and syllable counting. The conclusion argues that all of these tools -as well as the landmark works by Morley and Bruerton or W. Poesse - still offer great surprises and challenges for researchers. Thus, the development of new methods, such as stylometry, should not impel us to dismiss the classic approaches. Quite the opposite: old and new methods inform one another

The first is that of entry conditions, with particular reference to labour immigration. The second theme concerns the integration of immigrants already present on EU territory. The European Union will have to resolve issues such as greater harmonisation of criteria for naturalisation and access to local voting, especially with regard to second generations of immigrant origin. The third major arena for discussion concerns the issue of asylum and involves internal EU solidarity

Abstract: In the fiction of the Joufroi de Poitiers, the author, perhaps a native of eastern France, claims to have found his story near Montpellier. His journey is perhaps not imaginary as we have an indication of a place that carries a certain political value, in an era when the French Crown, after having concluded the anti-Albigensian crusade in the mid-thirteenth century, had taken possession of the Midi. Montpellier was likely a free zone for the production and circulation of works of anti-Capetian satire, such as the Occitan novel which goes under the modern title of Flamenca. In fact, composed in the entourage of James I of Aragon in Montpellier, the Flamenca is one of the probable sources of Joufroi de Poitiers

Abstract: Discusses the role that attention plays in constituting the world, rather than reducing phenomena to the brain level. Discusses the different kinds of attention delineated by the divided hemispheres of the brain. On the one hand the left hemisphere specialised in grasping and manipulating the world, whereas the right hemisphere specialises in relat-ing to and understanding the world. Discusses how reliance on one or the other kind of attention has cultural, psychological and social implications

Abstract: At the end of the Middle Ages in Lombardy it was common for a rural lord and his subjects to be defined as friends. By comparing Lombardy to other areas of central and northern Italy, the essay underlines the exceptional nature of this situation, and questions its causes. Such a phenomenon had two main underlying reasons: on the one hand, the peculiar political relationship between city and countryside that distinguished Lombardy since the late thirteenth century; on the other hand, the strong consensual character of the Lombard lordship in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to investigate the progressive evolution of the Italian policy on international protection and reception system. Following the «refugee crisis» of 2015, various strategies have been tested to «reconfigure» the border and control human mobility, confusing and overlapping the inviolable obligation to protect the right of asylum with security measures aimed at safeguarding public order. The «new mobility control regime» has extended beyond the borders of national states in terms of containment and filtration devices for arriving migrants in search of protection (such as the hotspot approach and border control externalization processes)

Abstract: This study is part of a project aimed at supporting the weaknesses of young people who are experiencing, or are at risk of reaching, NEET condition (Not in Education, Employment or Training; aged between 15 and 29 or 34, according to different definitions). The first signs of the extreme discomfort caused by Neet condition were sought by investigating signs of weakness in high school students in the Piedmont, Valle d'Aosta and Liguria regions. Of course students as such are not Neets and the anonymity required for a survey dealing with very personal issues does not allow a longitudinal study to be carried out on the same individuals. However, the construction of a comparison base referring to a generic population, relative to the incidence of certain states of weakness (or some of their combinations), will allow for a subsequent comparison with the incidence of the same difficulties in school age for those who find themselves in a Neet situation. A survey questionnaire was administered to 931 students, an operator being present in the classrooms, shortly before the start of the pandemic. Collected results will therefore be more directly linked to school activities "in presence", even if discontinuities in teaching methods and characteristics caused by the pandemic might have brought in alterations that will need to be monitored over time

Abstract: The essay offers an analysis of the largest concentration of records concerning the feudal lord- ship in the Kingdom of Naples from the 15th to the 17th century, the serie Relevi, kept at the Ar- chivio di Stato of Naples. The Relevi were the core of the enormous mass of records hold by the Archives of the Camera della Sommaria in Naples. These files must be considered as a whole: by tracing the creation, the evolution and the integration of the archives of the most important fiscal and financial court of the reign, the paper points out the crucial links between archivistic order, government of the state and seigneural power in the Aragonese and Spanish era

Abstract: The paper presents Istat activity with the institutional glossary. Methods and implementation of the glossary are described, given the peculiarity of official statistics terminology, which is actually official and binding given the link and interrelations with regulations and international official guidelines. The work of a specific structure called "Metadata harmonization group" set at Istat to meet the requirements of terms producers (surveys experts) and terms users (methodologists, communication and dissemination experts). Space is then given to the terminological procedures adopted to set new terms and validate existing (mostly the results of surveys, sometimes the variables). A proposal aimed at the glossary translation is then presented, as a complementary aspect of the terminological work; a short analysis of the problems related with the institutional translation is given in the last paraghraphs

Abstract: The essay illustrates Quaini's inputs to the construction and the theoretical/operational development of the territorialist school and, later on, of the Territorialist Society, of which he was one of the major founders and guarantors. In his explication of concepts like place, territory, landscape, place awareness, Quaini anticipates the need for a multidisciplinary territorialist lexicon. Taking from Herodote Italia the focus on the fundamental integration of historical and spatial knowledge, he recommends a confluence of geography into the territorialist multidisciplinary system, exemplifying it in relation to topics like territorial museums, local observatories of landscape, statute of places, foundational description, new relationships between city and countryside

Abstract: In recent years, a remarkable number of studies have investigated sensory characteristics, such as flavor and texture, of edible insect and insect-based foods, their contribution to consumers' attitudes toward edible insects are important in consumer appeal and their willingness to try eating insects in the future. This paper addresses the problem of describing the sensory characteristics aof edible insect and insect-based foods in terms of preferences. To this end, we conducted a study to explore the representations of sensory experiences related to an insect-based dish involving a voluntary sample of 154 consumers. The quasi-experiment, which we have called projective sensory experience (PSE), follows a two-step procedure. In the first step, we asked the participants to imagine tasting an insect-based dish and then to rate, from 1 (imperceptible) up to 10 (very perceptible), the following taste-olfactory sensations: Sapidity, Bitter tendency, Acidity, Sweet, Spiciness, Aroma, Greasiness-Unctuosity, Succulence, Sweet, Fatness, Persistence. In the second step, we asked our interviewees to indicate, through a specific check-list, which was the most disturbing and least disturbing taste-olfactory sensation imagined. We collected data from May to July 2020 by using an anonymous on-line questionnaire. Results could help understand the sensory characteristics of "insects as food" that should be used or avoided, for example, in communication aimed at promoting familiarity with edible insects and improving the acceptability of insects as a novel food

Abstract: Dedicated to the medina in the Mediterranean space, this book is essentially based on detailed historical and photographic research into the characteristics of city design and its evolution, as well as some case studies from direct experience. The main objective of the present study consists of its documentary and evocative value, without forgetting the analysis of the multiple architectural spaces with monumental complexes of extraordinary cultural importance arranged according to precise hierarchies and specific uses. The research summarises the different experiences from this immense Arab-Muslim architectural heritage and its urban evolution. These aspects are expressed both by the large number of case studies (from Cordoba to Palermo, passing through Fez, Séfrou, Marrakech and Tunis) as well as by the quality of the built spaces as a whole. The several contributions show an urban framework that is still legible and significant, consisting of grids of houses with forms, structures and functions that show a concentration of spaces, places and monuments stratified over time and developed in the Mediterranean countries, producing extremely diverse situations

Abstract: The volume contains the proceedings of the conference Tramandare la memoria sociale del Novecento (Florence, 11.21.2019), on the occasion of presenting Gino Cerrito's archive. owned at present by the Social sciences library, University of Florence. Cerrito papers represent a primary source to investigate social movements in the XX century, especially anarchism, with particular reference to the War of Spain and to anarchical syndacalism between the two world wars. The project gave the opportunity to focus on the main issues concerning the preservation of the social memory of the XX century among experts and professionals. Historians, archivists, librarians, professors, association members and officers of the heritage preservation institutions discuss the problems and strategies confronting its conservation and enhancement. Investigate recent past requires a molteplicity of sources, beyond paper and through a great variety of expressions and media. And movements and their archives present peculiarities. Technical and political issues are considered, and a variety of cases and initiatives relating to archives dedicated to social movements and associations

Abstract: The main object of this book is a manuscript preserved in Rome but composed in Florence in the middle of the fifteenth century, which transmits a text that is nearly unknown and highly original for at least three reasons. Firstly, the subject matter: a description of the Camaldoli hermitage at a time when this place was highly appreciated. Secondly, the discursive genre: the description of a built landscape, influenced both by humanist ekphrasis and by the tradition of medieval figurative exegesis. Finally, the dedicatee of the work, who is no less than Peter son of Cosimo dei Medici. The book successively examines the medieval and modern tradition of this little work, the identity of its author and the milieu of its production and first reception, and finally the details - some of them completely new - of the description of the Camaldolese hermitage and their textual and figurative tradition. It concludes with a critical edition of the work and the glosses with which it was enhanced in modern times. It is therefore a contribution not only to the history of an important Tuscan monastic centre, but also to that of the cultural and political networks of Tuscany in the second half of the fifteenth century, as well as to the knowledge of the textual and iconographic genres of landscape and monumental description, and finally, in a certain way, of modern Tuscan scholarship

Abstract: Between 1843 and 1845 Pope Gregory XVI entrusted the two Tuscan Olivetan monasteries, Monte Oliveto Maggiore in the Sienese area and San Bartolomeo in Florence, to the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Florence Ferdinando Minucci with the task of conducting an apostolical visit. At the same time, the Tuscan government, following the legislation of Pietro Leopoldo, instructed the Archbishop himself to conduct a visit to the same monasteries in the name and on behalf of the State. The essay analyses the story by cross-examining the ecclesiastical sources with those of the Government. An episode emerges that testifies to the persistence of dynamics typical of the ancient regime regarding the relations between State and Church in the context of the Restoration age

Abstract: By appropriating the notions of journey and exile-that are at the core of Dante's life and work-the texts we are examining in this publication are able to refer to/relate to the conditions of exile, exclusion, and segregation that were proper to Apartheid and still affect post-Apartheid South Africa. The works of Erich Auerbach and Franco Fortini (who unexpectedly in the 1980s accepted an invitation of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg) help us to read these texts within the wider frame of 20th and early 21st interpretations and rereading of Dante's Commedia

Abstract: This work proposes an informative system to monitor pension systems by integrating pension and labor market statistics. This more comprehensive system is used to build an indicator to measure prospectively the sustainability of pension systems. The set of indicators is divided into two groups, each tracking pension contributions and payments flows. Each flow is composed by the product of three statistics: a statistics for the extensive margin, i.e. how many contributors and retirees, one for the intensive margin, i.e. how much workers contribute and pensioners receive pensions, and one for the durational margin, i.e. for how long workers contribute and retirees receive pensions. As such, the statistical content is coherent with the set of pension indicators considered by Eurostat and OECD. Statistics are extracted from Eurostat database and ensure cross-country comparability. The advantage of this approach is twofold. Firstly, it allows reflecting specificities of each pension regimes, characterized by own specific contribution rules and pension formulas, without explicitly account for them. Secondly, it allows to relate the assessment of sustainability of pension systems to the dynamics of labor markets since it explicitly takes into account the distribution of wages, the duration of working life, the distribution of old-age pensions and the life expectancy at retirement. An application on a pool of seven European countries (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands) is provided for the period 2015 - 2019. The indicator for the prospective sustainability of pension systems is compared across two other alternatives to stress the contribution of each margin. These alternatives are then compared with a benchmark indicator and their correlations are measured

Abstract: The current essay aims to highlighting the importance of Magris' Utopia e disincanto. The year of its first publication (1999) was a watershed moment in his career, as it paved the way to a new season of public engagement and historical analysis, which can be also seen in his later essays and novels. Twenty years later, Utopia e disincanto is still a manifesto for modernity, a deeply contemporary book where Magris' analytical view is headed towards an idea of universal literature, an idea of Weltliteratur that should be a tool to understand the changes in which mankind is involved. Literature is meant to be a tool to investigate the dark sides hidden among the folds of History

Abstract: The volume concludes a multi-year study conceived and carried out by the Museo del Tessuto of Prato, which involved public bodies and cultural institutions in the city motivated by the desire to see one of the identifying products of the Prato textile district returned to contemporary life: its cloth. The idea to experimentally reconstruct the cloth arose from the study of some documents of the Datini Fund, a unique archival complex in the world for historical and economic studies on the Middle Ages. The collective and interdisciplinary project is documented in a volume created in collaboration with the International Institute of Economic History "F. Datini". The historical contributions on the manufacturing and commercial management of the Datini cloth are followed by a second part that documents the study and experimentation phases of its reconstruction

Abstract: Alfredo Serrai in the volume Gabriel Naudé, Helluo Librorum, e l'Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque, publish the version from French to Italian of the first exposition of the Librarianship as a discipline, together with an ample introduction both historical and conceptual. With the arguments and the praxis introduced and explained by Naudé, in the first decades of the XVII century has begun the discipline "Librarianship as the science of the selection and of the order of books" that implement their disposition in a library. With Naudé the library becomes not only the proper image of the science, but a true testimonial of the verity against its manipulations and errors. In such a vision of both the research and morality, the naudean philosophical principles can be properly situated in the frame of a mature preilluminism

Abstract: Social media are nowadays fertile ground for debates that are often rich in arguments of persuasive value. In the present writing, we hypothesize that emotions play a significant role in determining the success of arguments on social media. In order to validate the hypothesis, we analyzed Change My View, an Internet forum on Reddit where the persuasiveness of the discussions among participants is explicit and regulated by specific norms. Our analysis revealed that arguments enjoying a higher degree of success were characterized by two particular emotions: anticipation and joy, which we interpret as belonging to engagement, a more general emotional dimension that includes them both. Such characteristics of successful arguments lead us to consider the persuasive experience on social media as analogous to a playful experience. Like in a game, in order to successfully take part in such a persuasive experience, certain requirements are needed: commitment and respect for the rules as well as joyful participation

Abstract: Intorno a Boccaccio/Boccaccio e dintorni 2020 collects the Proceedings of the Seminar that took place in Certaldo Alta on 10-11 September 2020, in one of the short intervals that the pandemic has left open to face-to-face meetings. The Seminar, now in its seventh edition, is configured not only as one of the main activities of the Ente Giovanni Boccaccio, but as an international event, whose importance is confirmed by the continuous increase in citations in the scientific bibliography. The 2020 edition also qualifies for the relief and variety of the topics covered, for the merging and intertwining of historical-literary, philological, linguistic skills, which lead to reflect on important topics of Boccaccio's culture and sources and on his works, not without forgetting, in this centenary year 2021, the vital and fundamental relationship with Dante

Abstract: The intervention addresses three metaphysical and fantastical exemplary works from the twentieth century - Ebdòmero, La partenza dell'Argonauta, Il Mar delle Blatte - in which the theme of travel finds expression through different textual models. In the first case, De Chirico uses the archetypical model of Ulysses' journey against a background of fantastic metaphysical imagery. In the second Savinio creates a parodistic rewriting of the Argonautiche by Apollonio Rodio - the mythical trip par excellence, while in the third (Il mar delle blatte) Landolfi recalls the characters of Salgari's adventure novels. All three texts represent imaginary travels towards an unreachable elsewhere, symbolically represented by a paradisiacal Island, lost and dreamt of also by the sailor Pessoa

By analysing a wide range of sources (pastoral visitations, chronicles, court and notarial records, statutes), the essay examines the domini-homines dialectic in the first half of the 14th century: in the Canavese Alpine valleys various degrees of institutional consolidation of communities can be outlined, identifying a process of growth common to communities in the entire Alpine Arc

Abstract: Landscape represents, for Massimo Quaini's research activities and publications, a recurrent and growing focus: from early 70's studies about rural landscapes of Liguria, to Hérodote/Italia, to later writings directly inquiring this concept and relating its fortune to 'modernity crisis', calling for grassroots action in order to reactivate local practices and knowledge, essential for developing landscape potentialities as a political project. This essay reflects upon publications and research experiences which contribute to define the specific legacy of Quaini as a landscape scholar, outlining a unique figure in the Italian context

Abstract: The present article aims to present Boccaccio's Buccolicum carmen as a main work in his latin production, inspired by Vergil and his followers during the Middle Age. Through the allegorical path, focused on the shepherd's environment, Boccaccio first defines a model of power embodied by the king-shepherd. Moreover, he tries to convert his readers, as well as himself, into a better way of life related to Vergil's one and close to the eremitic model. By doing so, he accomplishes himself as a poeta-theologus, as exposed by Dante

Abstract: The image of Magellan as a modern hero who strongly wanted and tried at any price to complete the circumnavigation of the earth, but whom death prevented from doing so partly arose as soon as the first reports of the journey following the arrival of the only ship, Victoria, with 18 survivors were issued. Among these, there is the account Maximilianus Transylvanus gave on the basis of the information obtained interviewing a group of survivors, including Captain Elcano. He immediately understood the political relevance and the propaganda potential of the success of Magellan's enterprise. In this article we will analyze De Moluccis insulis, highlighting the content and linguistic choices that contribute to creating an image of the expedition, of Magellan and of the role of Spain in the new world

Abstract: Since its independence, Portugal had strong commercial, political, and cultural ties with the Italian Peninsula. This place has always been a source of inspiration for writers and artists from all over the world: throughout the centuries, Rome has been able to attract a considerable number of Portuguese authors, who, from time to time, have approached the city or as the cradle of Catholicism, or as a place where they can revive their own Latin and classical roots. This article aims to highlight how Rome has been able to inspire Portuguese authors travelling through the city, in an attempt to highlight, isolate and describe the common elements existing among them

Abstract: The essay analyses the cult of St. Cresci and its origins. St. Cresci is considered to be one of the companions of St. Miniato, and it is believed he was martyred 'sub Decio' in the 3rd century. St. Cresci's legend must be interpreted in the context of the Florentine hagiographic production of the 11th century, when the local clergy tried to resuscitate old and long forgotten cults of saints whose relics they possessed. The paper argues that the legend of St. Cresci was 'invented' to be opposed to that of St. Miniato. Indeed in the 11th century Ildebrando, bishop of Florence, strongly promoted the cult of Minias in order to support his claims on the lands of the newly founded monastery. It was after this that cathedral's canons, in opposition with their bishop, proposed the martyrial figure of St. Cresci; the cult of which got a great importance under the Medici, and especially during the reign of Cosimo III

Abstract: Editorial criteria in critical editions of Shakespeare's plays have evolved from a 18th-century arbitrary eclecticism into one restricted by the editor's knowledge of the nature and transmission of the early texts, a knowledge developed by the 20th-century New Bibliography that specially informs paleographical and bibliographical criteria. Roughly from the 21st century, these criteria have evolved into a conservatism influenced by a social view of texts, which stands on a par with the primordial criterion of reconstructing the text intended by the author. This textualism is nourished by a skepticism about the certainty the New Bibliography inspired in what editors know about the texts' transmission

Abstract: If the concept of time-space, associated to the travel, usually refers to a space-temporal changing from a subject, the aim of this work is to reflect on the possibility to use the same concept for a different process, that involves space and time in other positions regarding to the subject, or else the physical immobility and the research during the time. In the last years some famous Brazilian novels deal not only with actual themes, but they find again their present origins in places cancelled by the urban palimpsest: the senzalas and the slavery live again in the echos of very different works as Becos da memória by Conceição Evaristo (2006), Passageiro do fim do dia by Rubens Figueiredo (2010), and O amor dos homens avulsos by Victor Heringer (2016)

Abstract: The book discusses the experience of two Florentine travellers in the Levant from the 1760s to 1792. During their separate stays in Cyprus and in Istanbul they visited the Holy Land, Anatolia and Mesopotamia providing extensive reports on natural history, institutions, local customs and languages as well as data on the economy and the health conditions of the area. Their numerous printed works enjoyed remarkable success and were translated into French and other languages. The inquiry places the authors firmly within the European 'Republic of letters' and testifies to the growing interest for Islam and Ottoman power during the Enlightenment debate on the eve of the French Revolution

Abstract: In this peculiar volume, Luigi Dei gathers a collection of his writings, calling them 'thoughtful lightness' as a tribute to a writer he loves: Italo Calvino. The reference at the beginning of the collection is intended as a sign of appreciation and gratitude towards this great Italian intellectual of the last century. Even the structure of the various sections honors the memory of the writer, recalling his 'Six Memos for the next Millennium'. Brief little stories, animated by the desire to discover everyday life; extracts of speeches characterized by a will to fantasize, imagine and recover the values of visibility; selected parts from greeting speeches on various issues addressed in conferences he attended as a Rector; new theatrical 'stories': all of these are the texts that Luigi Dei manages - with sensitivity and great communication skills - to fill with fantasy, imagination, accuracy, diversity, swiftness and thoughtful lightness. And he's able to do it using a very peculiar language and a captivating style that encourages the reflection on the most important issues of our time

Abstract: The essay focuses on the modalities adopted by Magris in his novel, Alla cieca, to merge literature and civil engagement through a fine narrative construction. By populating his writing with precise documentary research and taking advantage of the possibilities of invention, the author succeeds in giving voice to minimum destinies of History and save their high moral lesson. This can also be seen through a comparative reading of the pages of the novel dealing with Tito's gulag, Goli Otok, and Scotti's book, which is a historical reconstruction provided by witnesses of the events suffered by Italians who lived there

Abstract: Murakami's early writings are littered with names of various foods and dishes. Often appearing in the context of descriptions of dates with girlfriends or lovers, they in turn become associated with sexual interactions. However, they are not the sorts of dishes one expects to see in a conventional Japanese household. They are almost invariably foreign dishes or mere accompaniments for drinks. Whilst the famines of wartime and postwar Japan did much to disrupt traditional household diets, Murakami's predilection for foreign cuisine distances his writings even further from Japanese territory. This tendency is particularly evident in his early works. As has been well documented, following his eight-year sojourn abroad, the Great Hanshin Earthquake of January 1995, and the sarin gas attacks by the Aum Shinrikyo on the 20th of March that same year, Murakami's perspective shifted from one of 'detachment' to one of 'commitment'. However, an examination of food-related passages-and the sexual interactions that often follow-reveals a different picture. Despite Murakami's shift to 'commitment', these scenes consistently depict a self-contained protagonist who makes no effort to allow women entry into his inner life. The protagonist is either unwilling or unable to comprehend the woman-as-other, a stance that I argue persists until the 2010's. Accordingly, this paper will examine juxtapositions of food and sex from Murakami's earliest works to Onna no inai otokotatchi (Men Without Women, 2014) and Kishidanchōgoroshi (Killing Commendatore, 2017)

Abstract: The paper deals with foundation and further fortunes of the Florentine abbey of San Miniato, founded by bishop Ildebrando (1018), and discusses the grounds of the strong hostility that Vallombrosan monks demonstrated toward florentine bishops like the same Ildebrando or Pietro Mezzabarba (who 1067 founded the nunnery of San Pier Maggiore). The so-called Vita anonima of John Gualberto, discovered and published by Robert Davidsohn, is particularly hard on these bishops, but it was written around 1120 by a monk of San Salvatore di Settimo (near Florence), in order to discredit the present bishop Goffredo Alberti, brother of count Tancredi Nontigiova. The paper considers also the cases of Pistoia and Pisa, where around the end of 11th century local bishops founded the abbeys of San Michele in Forcole and San Rossore

Abstract: Malformations of cortical development (MCDs) result from a disruption in the process of the human brain cortex formation: currently, there are no pharmacological treatments for diffuse MCDs. Next-generation sequencing has accelerated the identification of MCDs causing genes: in some cases, functional studies are needed to clarify the role of genetic variants. The aim of this PhD project has been to apply a multidisciplinary approach to identify causative mutations in patients with MCDs, validate the pathogenic role of the identified mutations, and assess the effectiveness of novel in vitro treatment for mTOR pathway related MCDs

Abstract: Logical abilities are a ubiquitous ingredient in all those contexts that take into account soft skills, argumentative skills or critical thinking. However, the relationship between logical models and the enhancement of these abilities is rarely explicitly considered. Two aspects of the issue are particularly critical in our opinion, namely: (i) the lack of statistically relevant data concerning these competences; (ii) the absence of reliable indices that might be used to measure and detect the possession of abilities underlying the above-mentioned soft skills. This paper aims to address both aspects of this topic by presenting the results of a research we conducted in the period October - December 2020 on students enrolled in various degree courses at the University of Florence. To the best of our knowledge, to date this is the largest available database on the subject in the Italian University System. It has been obtained by a three-stage initiative. We started from an "entrance" examination for assessing the students' initial abilities. This test comprised ten questions, each of which was centered on a specific reasoning construct. The results we have collected show that there is a widespread lack of understanding of basic patterns that are common in the everyday way of arguing. Students then underwent a short training course, using formal logic techniques in order to strengthen their abilities, and afterwards took an "exit" examination, replicating the structure and the questions difficulty of the entrance one in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the course. Results show that the training was beneficial

Abstract: The essay addresses the problem of the relationship between large aristocratic families and "noble parishes" in Genoa, by considering the case of the Doria and the church of San Matteo, founded in 1125 and whose reconstruction was planned in 1278. On the one hand, three qualifying aspects of the Doria kinship are examined in order to understand the role of the small church in enhancing the coordination of the group: i.e., positions of leadership and command in the maritime city and in its government; dispersion and presence outside Genoa; numerical strength, residence and leadership. On the other hand, the article considers the insertion of San Matteo in the monastic network (not only in Liguria) headed by the abbey of San Fruttuoso, and how its reconstruction allowed for the diversification of the large family internal and external relevance. The conclusion, thanks to the comparison with the experiences of other important urban families, shows the uniqueness of this case study and how broader and more systematic comparisons should be made, even outside the Genoese context

Abstract: 'Going beyond the challenge' means looking at the phenomenon of migration in its complexity, through a multi and interdisciplinary approach. The chapters that make up the first part offer an over-view of the phenomenon, with a reflection on the numbers of migrations in Italy followed by an in-depth examination of its international dimension. The second part focuses on the Italian case, and on the Italian foreign policy towards some African countries. The third part of the book adopts a sociological perspective, including the reconfiguration of the 'border' in Italian legislation and the analysis of the reception model promoted in Tuscany. The fourth part analyses public communication, from hate speech to stereotypes, up to the politicization of the migration issue in some European countries

Abstract: This volume brings together a selection of essays on Claudio Magris' work, aiming to enrich critical debate with a specific focus on interdisciplinary dimension and continuous dialogue with the main European literary traditions. The outcome is an overall study on Magris' narrative, essayistic and theatrical production, trying to fix his plural and prismatic identity: from the narration of places to an unavoidable ideological tension; from philosophical alphabets to the weight of History; from Myth's remediation to the abroad reception; from hypotext filigree to real case studies. According to a diachronic perspective, they focus attention on Magris' works, such as Microcosmi, Alla cieca, Non luogo a procedere and Tempo curvo a Krems

Abstract: Since the broad diffusion of Computer-Assisted survey tools (i.e. web surveys), a lively debate about innovative scales of measure arose among social scientists and practitioners. Implications are relevant for applied Statistics and evaluation research since while traditional scales collect ordinal observations, data from sliders can be interpreted as continuous. Literature, however, report excessive times of completion of the task from sliders in web surveys. This experimental protocol is aimed at testing hypotheses on the accuracy in prediction and dispersion of estimates from anonymous participants who are recruited online and randomly assigned into tasks in recognition of shades of colour. The treatment variable is two scales: a traditional multipoint 0-10 multipoint vs a slider 0-100. Shades have a unique parametrisation (true value) and participants have to guess the true value through the scale. These tasks are designed to recreate situations of uncertainty among participants while minimizing the subjective component of a perceptual assessment and maximizing information about scale-driven differences and biases. We propose to test statistical differences in the treatment variable: (i) mean absolute error from the true value (ii), time of completion of the task. To correct biases due to the variance in the number of completed tasks among participants, data about participants can be collected through both pre-tasks acceptance of web cookies and post-tasks explicit questions

Abstract: When dealing with a wine, it is of interest to be able to predict its quality based on chemical and/or sensory variables. There is no agreement on what wine quality means, or how it should be assessed and it is often viewed in intrinsic (physicochemical, sensory) or extrinsic (price, prestige, context) terms (Jackson, 2017). In this paper, the wine quality was evaluated by experienced judges who scored the wine on the base of a 0-10 scale, with 0 meaning very bad and 10 excellent, so, the resulting variable was categorical. The models applied to predict this variable provide the prediction of the occurrence probabilities of each of its categories. Nevertheless, jointly with this probabilities' record, the practitioners need the predicted value (category) of the variable, so the statistical problem to be covered refers to the way in which this probabilities' record is transformed into a single value. In this paper we compare the predictive performances of the default method (Bayes Classifier - BC), which assigns a unit to the most likely category, and other two methods (Maximum Difference Classifier and Maximum Ratio Classifier). The BC is the optimal criterion if one is interested in the accuracy of the classification, but, given that it favors the prevalent category most, when there is not a category of interest, it cannot be the best choice. The data under study concern the quality of the red variant of the Portuguese "Vinho Verde" wine (Cortez et al., 2009), measured on a 0-10 scale. Nevertheless, only 6 scores were used, with 2 scores with a very few number of observations, so this is the right context for predictive performance comparisons. In the study, we investigated different merging of categories and we used 11 explanatory variables to estimate the probabilities' record of the wine quality variable

Abstract: The Italian public-owned Academic Medical Centers (AMCs) are hospitals where the activities of scientific research, teaching, and patients care are fully integrated. AMCs have an enormous impact on society and country health. Recently, policymakers and practitioners give more and more great importance to the AMCs' scientific activity for both welfare and national competitivity. The scientific production and its impact on the research community could be obviously affected by different factors related to the structural and operational characteristics of each AMC. Healthcare institutions could be different for the typology of services that they offer, their geolocation, the presence/absence of Emergency Departments, the number of employees, and so forth. In this sense, our study aims to investigate and determine which are the possible factors impacting the research productivity of AMCs. We develop a model to assess the academic value of AMCs by taking into account these factors and how they are related to healthcare performance, measured in terms of scientific production (e.g. scientific publications) and impact on the research field (e.g. citations). To face this issue, for each of the public AMCs we collect data about research productivity from bibliographic indexing databases (e.g. Web of Science, PubMed) and we retrieve structural information mainly from their official websites. This work has been partially financed by the research project "Leading Change in Academic Medical Centers", funded by the competitive call for projects V:ALERE 2019. The project aims to provide evidence, advice, and remarks to help the agents of the public health system to address the many challenges that they face

Abstract: Bruno de Finetti (1906-1985) is well known as the founder of the subjective theory of probability. Less known, with a few exceptions, is his contribution to economic theory during the early stage of his scientific career. In the second half of the 1930s, de Finetti was passionately involved in the field of welfare economics. To provide a theoretical framework for evaluating social welfare and to help in designing public policies, he developed a new mathematical tool: the theory of simultaneous maxima. Using this analytical approach, he also advanced the idea of a social welfare function, albeit quite different from the one introduced in 1938 by Abram Bergson, reflecting the debate on the economic planning among Italian economists

Abstract: This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This book discusses urban public spaces and, more specifically, run-down, inactive micro-spaces that are barely used due to their location, dimensions, morphology or semantic characteristics. In literature, these spaces are often defined as "residual urban spaces." A large abandoned industrial area on the outskirts of a town or a small interstitial space in a historical centre can be residual. With respect to such a broad subject matter, the book seeks to radically limit the field, concentrating on public residual spaces found in the oldest parts of cities. The book reflects on this theme and introduces a method for reading and assessment of the residuality of public spaces in historical contexts (Residuality Assessment Process) which was tested in the historical centre of Florence. It is the authors' view that residual spaces, above all if designed according to a system logic, can go from being problems to potential activators of urban and social regeneration processes, offering a useful contribution to improve city life

Abstract: The present article deals with the use that Boccaccio makes of diminutives in his Decameron. After a brief introduction on the lexicographic studies dedicated to the works of the author, an investigation carried out thanks to the corpus TLIO (Tesoro della Lingua Italiana delle Origini) is presented. The study is aimed at reporting the occurrences of -etto, -ello, -ino, -uccio and its variant -uzzo diminutives in their context of use in the Centonovelle. The results outline a diverse situation where these diminutives are used in a wide range of expressive situations, spanning from affective to humorous and making their use one of Boccaccio's key elements of writing style. The 'passion' for diminutives felt by the author is finally presented through a few examples of hapax legomena

Abstract: In summer 1923, in the midst of the 'fight' to balance the budget, Minister Alberto De Stefani announced the abolition of inheritance tax, pursuant to the 'full powers' granted to the government by the Parliament. This abolition - possibly the most iconic act of the 'financial restauration' carried on by De Stefani - provoked surprise and interest in the country and abroad but was substantially overlooked by historians. This chapter - first outcome of a research in progress - offers a first historical reconstruction of this episode of early 1920s Italian economic history, by documenting both the positions of an influent advisor of De Stefani, the economist Maffeo Pantaleoni, and even more, the lobbying activity carried on by pressure groups such as the bankers' association, an influential businessman linked to Mussolini such as Cesare Goldmann, and a young, very proactive association of notaries. Moreover, the chapter surveys the way in which both Italian and international media reported on this case of politics of inequality, offering a different perspective on a crucial period in the consolidation of Fascist power

Abstract: How do right wing populist parties politicize migration in different political, economic and social contexts? The chapter aims to provide an answer to this question by analyzing four parties: the Italian (Northern) League, the Spanish VOX, the German Alternative for Germany and the Austrian Freedom Party. Opposition to migration and negative reactions towards multicultural societies are recurrent arguments in the rhetoric of right-wing populist parties. The authors offer a multidimensional description of converging and diverging patterns of representation of migration in the four countries

Abstract: «It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a question without debating it», says a quote from Joseph Joubert. Debate is one of the most valued text genres and is therefore included in curricular or extracurricular academic activities. What do we teach by teaching how to debate? What do students learn by learning how to debate? They can compete, collaborate and might even develop a new skill. Since concrete educational choices reflect a certain underlying educational philosophy, in what follows the model proposed by Biesta (2010,2016,2017) will be illustrated. The theoretical knowledge drawn from this framework will then be applied to the analysis of the Oxford Debate, in the version adopted by the regulated debate tournaments in Poland as well as to the discussion of a modification of the Oxford Debate itself, inspired by the concept of 'risk of education' (or rather, 'The Beautiful risk of educatio', as the title of one of Biesta's books reads)

Abstract: Mixed or multilevel models exploit random effects to deal with hierarchical data, where statistical units are clustered in groups and cannot be assumed as independent. Sometimes, the assumption of linear dependence of a response on a set of explanatory variables is not plausible, and model specification becomes a challenging task. Regression trees can be helpful to capture non-linear effects of the predictors. This method was extended to clustered data by modelling the fixed effects with a decision tree while accounting for the random effects with a linear mixed model in a separate step (Hajjem & Larocque, 2011; Sela & Simonoff, 2012). Random effect regression trees are shown to be less sensitive to parametric assumptions and provide improved predictive power compared to linear models with random effects and regression trees without random effects. We propose a new random effect model, called Tree embedded linear mixed model, where the regression function is piecewise-linear, consisting in the sum of a tree component and a linear component. This model can deal with both non-linear and interaction effects and cluster mean dependencies. The proposal is the mixed effect version of the semi-linear regression trees (Vannucci, 2019; Vannucci & Gottard, 2019). Model fitting is obtained by an iterative two-stage estimation procedure, where both the fixed and the random effects are jointly estimated. The proposed model allows a decomposition of the effect of a given predictor within and between clusters. We will show via a simulation study and an application to INVALSI data that these extensions improve the predictive performance of the model in the presence of quasi-linear relationships, avoiding overfitting, and facilitating interpretability

Abstract: Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen's book Navigations was inspired by the experience of the author's first contact with the East, during a plane trip to Macao to pay homage to Camões. The view of the coasts of Vietnam will have led Sophia to imagine the wonder and astonishment experienced by the Portuguese navigators who first arrived there by sea. Therefore, this book commemorates the Portuguese Discoveries, in the line of Camões and Pessoa, but that takes a new and original look on the theme. Therefore, these Navigations are an initiatory journey, from which results the discovery of Being, that is, in some way, a kind of circumnavigation voyage, the return to the beginning

Abstract: Following Voltaire's Essai sur les mœurs, the first explorers of the new worlds are innocents: they respond to the mythic imagery of the first man. It is on their successors that lays the blame: interested in material enrichment, they despoil the new world. After Magellan, the first geographical demarcation line having been overcome, the culture degeneration of Western world is double: geographic and hermeneutic. Voltaire is in fact not so far from Rousseau's thinking

Abstract: Massimo Quaini (1941-2017) was one of the most eminent figures in geography. A group of scholars dedicate this book to him in order to keep unwinding, in the world's labyrinth, the thread of his reflections, that placed geography among territorial sciences making them object of civil commitment. His critical, transdisciplinary thinking did never recognize boundaries but only fruitful differences of perspective: his highest legacy, perhaps, lays in this impulse to integrate different skills (of historians, poets, archaeologists, ecologists, planners...) to return the world's places their value. This is therefore not a typical 'in memoriam' book on Quaini's topics but, as we dare say, a book with Quaini

Abstract: Developing terminology products as tools for organizing and transferring specialized knowledge requires careful considerations already during the planning stage. The main content of this paper is a checklist, which is the result of reflections gathered during the reprogramming and restyling of the Information System for Legal Terminology bistro (http://bistro.eurac.edu). bistro is an application used to publish the data contained in a multilingual terminological data base. The checklist is designed as a starting point and reference for the conception and structuring of terminology tools, e. g. online terminology reference tools. Its aim is to help identify needs and, at the same time, to guide developers in the basic choices to be made already in the planning stage

Abstract: Migration is a highly debated issue in political but also academic terms. Research on the national and international level is more and more sophisticated and detailed in the selection of the case studies. In this scenario, the authors of this volume aim to present to the academic attention and to the community of university students a multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of migration in Italy, whose main purpose is to go beyond the over-adopted concept of migration as social, political and cultural "challenge"

Abstract: Maximilianus Transilvanus's letter, De Moluccis insulis is one of the most important historical sources on the Magellanes-Elcano expedition, born immediately after the circumnavigation of the Earth by Victória. The crew of the ship was interviewed by Maximilianus Transilvanus shortly after the docking in the port of Seville in September 1522. This interview became the basis of the letter written in Latin and sent from the royal secretary to the archbishop of Salzburg, Lang, who had already been his benefactor. The letter is the first step of the transformation of these news into information. This study does not wish to analise the text, but rather the 'paratexts' of the letter: a piece of sagu palm broad, a paradisea bird and spieces attached to the letter

Abstract: This paper is concerned with lexical competence in the study of Italian for academic purposes, notably learned words formed with Greek/Latin elements. To improve and check receptive knowledge of such "difficult" vocabulary both by native and by L2 learners, a number of exercises are made available, and can be actually done and evaluated, at https://esploradizionari.i-learn.unito.it/. This is a technology enhanced learning environment integrating Moodle with the Automatic Assessment System Maple®, a software of Canadian origin already successfully used for teaching STEM disciplines. The specific features of the exercises are discussed, along with early results by Italophone and non-Italophone learners

Abstract: As early as 2007 Hibbard and other scholars have pointed out that that in a hyper-connected world innovation processes and cumulative feedbacks through population dynamics, energy, institutions, and political economies have triggered a complex dynamics involving the entire Earth-System. The global landscape is therefore characterized by hierarchical evolving systems, the result within which human decision making processes have to face uncertainty and anxiety, as knowledge is necessarily incomplete, fuzzy, and sometimes even wrong. As many scientists and scholars claim, a lesson can then drawn from nature: unceasingly develop learning and adaptation, enriched by purposeful research, experimentation and rationally founded imagination. I is just during critical phases that it is necessary to enlarge individual and collective knowledge endowment

Abstract: The vast extension of the Habsburg Empire, as well as its heterogeneous cultural and linguistic composition, were both the causes of its richness and demise. This gave way to a debate on the specific traits of Austrian literature, which in 1963 was enriched by Claudio Magris' degree thesis, published under the title Il mito absburgico nella letteratura austriaca moderna. Starting from the assumptions of a Lukacian-style historicist critique, the book ended up offering a fascinating evocation of the cultural world of great Austria. Together with his subsequent Germanic and non-fiction works (Lontano da dove, L'anello di Clarisse, Danubio), this debut book forms a "Central European tetralogy"
