Abstract: Italian literature emerged around 1600 at the intersection of poetological and religious attempts at standardization and under the attentive watch of a literary community and its critical discussions as well as the censorship and inquisition of the Counter-Reformation. This volume sheds light on creativity under the conditions of this twofold "observance" by looking at texts from various genres written between ca. 1550 and 1650

Abstract: Andronikos Kallistos, a leading personality among the Greeks who participated in Italian Humanism, was a scholar, teacher and copyist of manuscripts. This book investigates Kallistos’ scholarly and scribal activity by adopting a synergistic approach to historical, philological, codicological and paleographic data, in order to shed light on his role at the time of the transfer of Greek cultural heritage to Italy and, hence, throughout Europe

In a pluridisciplinary approach, the volume gathers contributions by scholars from Italy, Spain and Colombia about the vicissitudes of Hispanic books and manuscripts between the 16th and 19th centuries. They discuss, among other topics, historiographical sources, lexical questions, cartographic analysis and poetry analysis

    Keywords: Literature: history & criticism ; Literary studies: c 1500 to c 1800 ; Literary studies: from c 1900 - ; History of the Americas ; National liberation & independence, post-colonialism
Abstract: The study writes a cultural history of transatlantic relations on the late 18th and 19th centuries. Using the example of the Neo-Spanish Dominican fray Servando Teresa de Mier (1763–1827), it examines how Hispanic American writers of the transition between the early modern and modern period transgressed geographic, cultural, and discursive border regimes, thereby preparing the political and literary independency of the previous Spanish colonies

Abstract: Under the name satura, this volume examines a "monstrous" text tradition characterized by mixed forms and intertextual hypertrophy. In studies on authors like Lucilius, Varro, Horace, Petronius, Hamann, and Jean Paul, Sina Dell’Anno takes a new perspective on this tradition by focusing her attention on the notorious formlessness of satirical texts as the engine of her autophilological poetics

Abstract: Around 1600, two independent translations were made of Boccaccio’s Elegia di madonna Fiammetta (ca. 1343/44) in the Upper German speech area. This historical critical edition presents the older of the two translations by Johann Engelbert Noyse. Its bilingual format allows the translation (Venice 1565) to be compared with the original Italian text. This edition is targeted at both a specialist audience and interested readers

Abstract: Does Michelangelo’s art reflect Catholic orthodoxy or is it the work of a follower of the Reformation, forced to act in secret? The question of Michelangelo’s religious beliefs is still debated, and the positions taken tend to remain unilateral. This volume gathers contributions by art historians, literary scholars, and historians of religion who address this question in all its complexity

Abstract: This study examines the transformation that took place in worldly lied culture in German around 1600. Ornate poetry in the vernacular and solo lieder emerged in the sixteenth century and were predominantly developed using Italian elements. Their reception in the middle classes led to the dissemination and valorization of lied culture, and to its codification in literary and music theory

Abstract: While God looks directly into people's souls as inspector cordium, the relationship of observation between man and the devil appears as an immanent and indirect, lateral and potentially reciprocal one. The contributions in this volume describe how late medieval and early modern stories narratively modeled such constellations of attention, thereby negotiating mechanisms of social control together with forms of vigilant self-observation

Abstract: How do Torquato Tasso and Giovan Battista Marino react to the vigilant and normative context between the 16th and 17th centuries? Two evasive tactics designed to safeguard lewdness and enchantment in the poems are considered, starting from the relationship the two authors had with norms and rules: allegory on the one hand, and disguise on the other. Tasso's path is evolutionary and his opinion changes according to the internalisation of laws and values that lead to a re-evaluation of his initial opinions, while Marino transgresses the rules and uses typically defensive elements - such as allegory - overturning them and inventing a concealed offensive use. In this context, the paratextual allegories of Marino's Adonis, hitherto ill-considered by critics, are thus re-evaluated, and the Tasso route is reconsidered from a perspective that sees the two authors not as victims of a censorial system, but as active participants

Abstract: Martin Luther was not just a great reformer and bible translator, but also an extremely pugnacious and, in his argumentation, sometimes polemical contemporary. This form of linguistic aggression is very clearly expressed in his pamphlet "Against the Papacy of Rome, Founded by the Devil" of 1545. This volume reveals the linguistic means that he used to implement this by undertaking a practical argumentation analysis

Abstract: The year 2019 marked the 300th anniversary of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. His novel was a huge success right away and was soon followed by bootlegs and translations. With the robinsonade, an independent genre of adventure literature was born. These contributions examine the novel within the context of bookselling history, provide new interpretations, and shed light on its multifaceted adaptation history up into the twenty-first century

Abstract: This handbook reviews efforts to increase the use of empirical methods in studies of the aesthetic and social effects of literary reading. The reviewed research is expansive, including extension of familiar theoretical models to novel domains (e.g., educational settings) enlarging empirical efforts within under-represented research areas (e.g., child development) and broadening the range of applicable quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., computational stylistics phenomenological methods). Especially challenging is articulation of the subtle aesthetic and social effects of literary artefacts (e.g., poetry, film). Increasingly, the complexity of these effects is addressed in multi-variate studies, including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. While each chapter touches upon the historical background of a specific research topic, two chapters address the area’s historical background and guiding philosophical assumptions. Taken together, the material in this volume provides a systematic introduction to the area for early career professionals, while challenging active researchers to develop theoretical frameworks and empirical procedures that match the complexity of their research objectives

Sebastian Meixner's book explores the juncture between narrative and world in his study of Goethe's early works. In three different constellations he investigates relationships of exchange between literature and science that Goethe used to ground the modern narrative
