Abstract: What is there to see in invisible artworks, empty books or blank screens? How do formal absences generate meaning? Constructing an argument by way of montage, the book is an annotated inventory of textual, visual, and conceptual figures of absence. Spanning across media, they reveal a creative tradition that uses absence not as a negative aesthetic category, but as a productive state of radical indeterminacy, with politics and poetics of its own

Abstract: Rivers have always been a formative component of spaces. They serve as natural borders, mold the character of a landscape, shape how entire regions look, and often mark politically contested border areas. At the same time, river landscapes constitute spaces of contact and exchange, thereby helping spatial cultures and cultural spaces to grow. The aim of this volume is to outline the diversity of river landscapes

Abstract: Women designers, many of them Jewish, played a decisive role in the development of Viennese modernity during the interwar period. This book presents new research on designers, photographers, journalists, and patrons who engaged with the prejudices of the time and created new visual languages in order to make careers for themselves. At the same time, they contributed to critical discourse about the emancipation of women

In interviews with filmmakers, supplemented with analyses and theoretical reflections, this book investigates the question of the creative spaces that emerge for filmmaking between the poles of politics and art

Abstract: This is the second of two volumes on the mechanisms of oral communication in ancient Greece, focused on epic poetry, which had deep roots in orality. Combining the tools of cognitive science with the historical and literary analysis of the texts, this survey considers the traces of orality in archaic epic poetry and their adaptation in the changes that the comminicative system showed both synchronously and diachronically

Abstract: The volume deals with the mechanisms of the oral communication in the ancient Greek culture. It focuses on the 'cultural message' of the texts, considered under two perspectives: the methodologies of cognitivism, and ethology, to analyze its embrional manifestations, and the tools of historical and literary analysis, to highlight the codification of the cultural message, and its evolutions in the changes of the communication system

Abstract: At the end of the 1970s, a new genre cycle was formed in US cinema. Starting with space opera in cinema, for which George Lucas' Star Wars is paradigmatic, fantasy established itself for the first time as an independent cinematic genre in distinction from fairy tales and fantastic fiction. The enthusiasm for pen & paper role-playing games and the continuing J. R. R. Tolkien craze culminated in the following years in a series of films that absorbed, pushed and further developed the diversity of modern film technology and production: the spectrum of films ranged from live-action films (Conan the Barbarian) to puppet animation (The Dark Crystal) to animated films (The Last Unicorn), in which George Lucas as well as Jim Henson and the production companies behind them at the time played leading roles. Contemporary critics had written these films off as conservative, sometimes even reactionary genre plays. In contrast, this essay unfolds a (historical) poetics of the US fantasy film. With its film-analytical case studies, the volume shows how the films of the years 1977 to 1987 are embedded in a specific film culture and how the genre cycle as part of the Hollywood system prepared and significantly influenced the triumph of blockbuster cinema in the 1990s

In which contexts does contemporary culture take up this established motif of antiquity and the early modern period? Interdisciplinary considerations show how productive it can be to answer this question by reflecting on it in light of discussions about repetition

Abstract: In view of challenges such as structural weakness, ageing and depopulation, it has become more important than ever in Japan since the 2011 triple disaster to revitalise rural regions with the help of various bottom-up and top-down initiatives. Not only are regional residents to be strengthened in their ties to their homeland, but peripheral areas themselves are to be staged as attractive working and living spaces and restructured in the long term. "Post-colonial" dependencies on economic powers in the big cities, socio-economic disparities between urban and rural areas, and failures in long-term planning and knowledge development are only a handful of the causes that shape the challenges of rural provinces today. From grassroots initiatives to save traditional matsuri to anime tourism and marriage migration, the volume reports on the background, consequences and interactions of the problems in Japan's regions. The third volume of the series "Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaftliche Japanforschung" (Cultural and Social Science Research on Japan) thus portrays a Japan of the regions whose image is always shifting between nostalgic retreat and disconnected countryside, invigorating alternative to the big city and deserted ghost village
