Abstract: APPROVED ; Abstract Introduction: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are caused by changes in the structure and/or function of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles, and/or osseous components, which develop secondary to non-inflammatory (e.g.: myalgia) or inflammatory-based conditions (e.g.: rheumatoid arthritis (RA)). TMDs are the most common non-dental orofacial pain conditions, with up to 90% of the general population experiencing TMDs during their lifespan. Symptoms include: TMJ pain, dysfunction, and reduced range of motion, all of which can impair mastication. It is hypothesised that masticatory impairments may impact on overall eating and swallowing, with the potential for additional repercussions for physical functioning and emotional well-being. It is also hypothesised that due to inflammatory joint destruction, adults with TMDs associated with RA may experience more severe problems than those with non-inflammatory disorders. However, little is currently known about the epidemiology, nature, impact, or management of TMD-related eating and swallowing problems. Research Aims: To investigate the epidemiology, nature, impact, and management of TMD-related eating and swallowing problems in adults with non-inflammatory and inflammatory-based conditions. Materials and Methods: Ethical approval was granted for all studies. The epidemiology, nature, and impact of TMD-related eating and swallowing problems was initially investigated via systematic reviews, with subsequent conduct of cross-sectional prospective studies of treatment-seeking patients presenting to national specialist centres of care. Patient data was gathered using both validated tools and new cohort-specific assessment protocols developed here. In addition, perspectives on the management of TMD-related eating and swallowing problems were investigated via surveying the views of both professionals and patients, with development of novel educational resources to address reported needs. Descriptive and statistical techniques were used in analysis. Results: Masticatory difficulties were common (89%), resulting in subsequent swallowing difficulties (53%), choking experiences (45%), and strangling sensations on swallowing (48%). Patients with RA reported higher rates of swallowing difficulties, although the sample size for this group was limited. Eating and swallowing problems moderately impacted on the completion of family, social, and recreational activities, with additional emotional impact, regardless of TMD aetiology. Professionals reported limited awareness of, or clinical experience with, these problems, with 34% viewing them as insignificant, and 47.5% reporting dissatisfaction with and negative perceptions of typical care delivered to this group. Professional and patient concerns related to the lack of evidence-based guidelines, resources, information sharing, or MDT interaction to support service delivery in this field. Discussion and Conclusion: This research highlighted: 1) the range of eating and swallowing problems reported by adults with TMDs; 2) the impact which these problems have on physical functioning and emotional well-being; 3) the status of clinical practice in this field, and 4) the resultant dissatisfaction of both surveyed patients and professionals with current care provision. Recommendation for future clinical practice and research include: the refinement of assessments and educational tools developed here, and the recruitment of larger and more diverse cohorts of patients and professionals in future epidemiological and interventionist research on TMD-related eating and swallowing problems.

Abstract: Heritage processes vary according to cultural, national, geographical, and historical contexts. This volume is unique in that it is dedicated to approaching the analysis of heritage through the concepts of social movements. Adapting the latest developments in the field of social movements, the chapters examine the formation, use and contestation of heritage by various official, non-official and activist players and the spaces where such ongoing negotiations and contestation take place. By bringing social movements into heritage studies, the book advocates a shift of perspective in understanding heritage, one that is no longer bound by (at times arbitrary) divisions such as those assumed between the state and people or between experts and non-experts.

Abstract: Introduction: Primarily aimed at undergraduates studying history, media studies, or cultural studies, this term-long nine-week unit explores the changing and complex relationships between the media and everyday life from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Rather than focusing simply on the history of media industries, institutions, or texts, the unit examines a range of ways in which media shape--and are shaped by--everyday life as they are put to use in a range of historical and national contexts. Carefully avoiding technological determinism, it is designed to enable students to understand the role of different media in the experience of modernity, from the sights and sounds of the nineteenth-century city to the rhythms and practices of the interwar home. The unit is organized around a series of key themes to enable students to develop more in-depth knowledge of a series of issues such as media and the senses; the media and everyday life in interwar Britain; and the media and consumer culture. Questions of identity are highlighted through an examination of issues such as gender, nation, and age. The unit offers opportunities for students to consolidate their own learning, analyze primary sources, and use audiovisual resources to enhance their directed learning

Abstract: Introduction: Primarily aimed at undergraduates studying history or cultural studies, this ten-week unit introduces students to the importance of domestic cultures in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Britain. Engaging with debates about the separation and gendering of public and private spheres, the unit examines how ideas of home are the products of distinctive historical contexts and transformations. It explores how specific values and meanings have been mapped on to public and private spheres and structured everyday life and shaped identities. The unit pays particular attention to how domestic cultures are gendered and classed, and how they need to be understood within--and contribute to--wider power relations and inequalities. The lessons also question whether public and private can simply be understood as distinct and bounded spheres. The unit encourages students to analyze primary sources to understand how the meaning of home is created across a range of cultural forms and practices such as domestic advice literature and cookbooks, art, radio and television programming, and women's magazines

Abstract: While mobile phones enjoy the largest production volume ever of any consumer electronics products, the demands they place on radio-frequency (RF) transceivers are particularly aggressive, especially on integration with digital processors, low area, low power consumption, while being robust against process-voltage-temperature variations. Since mobile terminals inherently operate on batteries, their power budget is severely constrained. To keep up with the ever increasing data-rate, an ever-decreasing power per bit is required to maintain the battery lifetime. The RF oscillator is the second most power-hungry block of a wireless radio (after power amplifiers). Consequently, any power reduction in an RF oscillator will greatly benefit the overall power efficiency of the cellular transceiver. Moreover, the RF oscillators' purity limits the transceiver performance. The oscillator's phase noise results in power leakage into adjacent channels in a transmit mode and reciprocal mixing in a receive mode. On the other hand, the multi-standard and multi-band transceivers that are now trending demand wide tuning range oscillators. However, broadening the oscillator's tuning range is usually at the expense of die area (cost) or phase noise. The main goal of this book is to bring forth the exciting and innovative RF oscillator structures that demonstrate better phase noise performance, lower cost, and higher power efficiency than currently achievable. Technical topics discussed in RF CMOS Oscillators for Modern Wireless Applications include:  Design and analysis of low phase-noise class-F oscillators Analyze a technique to reduce 1/f noise up-conversion in the oscillators Design and analysis of low power/low voltage oscillators Wide tuning range oscillators Reliability study of RF oscillators in nanoscale CMOS

Abstract: This book is an attempt to understand a significant part of the complex thought of Charles Sanders Peirce, especially in those areas which interested him most: scientific method and related philosophical questions. It is organized primarily from Peirce's own writings, taking chronological settings into account where appropriate, and pointing out the close connections of several major themes in Peirce's work which show the rich diversity of his thought and its systematic unity. Following an introductory sketch of Peirce the thinking and writer is a study of the spirit and phases of scientific inquiry, and a consideration of its relevance to certain outstanding philosophical views which Peirce held. This double approach is necessary because his views on scientific method are interlaces with a profound and elaborate philosophy of the cosmos. Peirce's thought is unusually close-knit, and his difficulty as a writer lies in his inability to achieve a partial focus without bringing into view numerous connections and relations with the whole picture of reality. Peirce received some of the esteem he deserves when the publication of his Collected Papers began more than thirty-five years ago. Some reviewers and critics, however, have attempted to fit Peirce into their own molds in justification of a particular position; others have disinterestedly sought to present him in completely detached fashion. Here, the author has attempted to understand Peirce as Peirce intended himself to be understood, and has presented what he believes Perice's philosophy of scientific method to be. He singles out for praise Peirce's Greek insistence on the primacy of theoretical knowledge and his almost Teilhardian synthesis of evolutionary themes. Primarily philosophical, this volume analyzes Peirce's thought using a theory of knowledge and metaphysics rather than formal logic

Abstract: Why reflect on infrastructures? Today, we are experiencing a breathtaking expansion and intensification of infrastructural interconnections around the globe. At the same time, infrastructures have also become the explicit subject of research studies in the social sciences and humanities. Accordingly, the thesis of this essay is that infrastructures are the instruments and media of Verräumlichung (spatialization)

Abstract: In the decades prior to the Revolution of 1917, the Russian intelligencija was strongly influenced by Western European intellectuals, including Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche was one of the European philosophers who played a prominent role in shaping Russian perceptions of reality in this period, although his thought was interpreted by Russians in contrasing ways. The article examines the case of Dmitrij Merežkovskij, reassessing the extent of Nietzsche's influence on his oeuvre. In our view, Nietzsche did not only influence Merežkovskij's early poetry, where aesthetic and anti-Christian views prevail, but also contributed to the sensual and individualist nature of his later prose

Abstract: The chapters in this book reflect on the practice of using narratives to understand individual and social reality. They all reveal dimensions of the same concrete reality: contemporary society of Central South Africa. Except for two, all the chapters originated from research in the program The Narrative Study of Lives, situated in the Department of Sociology at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Each chapter opens a window on an aspect of everyday life in Central South Africa. Each window displays the capacity of the narrative as a methodological tool in qualitative research to open up better understandings of everyday experience. The chapters also reflect on the epistemological journey towards unwrapping and breaking open of meaning. Narratives are one of many tools available to sociologists in their quest to understand and interpret meaning. But, when it comes to deep understanding, narratives are particularly effective in opening up more intricate levels of meaning associated with emotions, feelings, and subjective experiences

Abstract: This monograph interprets Sermones book 1 as a collection of Horace's credentials for Maecenas and traces his efforts in getting accepted as an associate of the latter after his miscalculation in joining Brutus. Although Horace regularly reflects on his poetic orientation and standards of good poetry, his primary objective was his self-presentation. The volume also examines his commentary on contemporary socio-political themes

Abstract: Originally published in 1966. The Individual and Society in the Middle Ages, based on three guest lectures given at Johns Hopkins University in 1965, explores the place of the individual in medieval European society. Looking at legal sources and political ideology of the era, Ullmann concludes that, for most of the Middle Ages, the individual was defined as a subject rather than a citizen, but the modern concept of citizenship gradually supplanted the subject model from the late Middle Ages onward. Ullmann lays out the theological basis of the political theory that cast the medieval individual as an inferior, abstract subject. The individual citizen who emerged during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, by contrast, was an autonomous participant in affairs of state. Several intellectual trends made this humanistic conception of the individual possible, among them the rehabilitation of vernacular writing during the thirteenth century and the growing interest in nature, natural philosophy, and natural law. However, Ullmann points to feudalism as the single most important medieval institution that laid the groundwork for the emergence of the modern citizen

Abstract: This volume examines the relationships between innovation and space, illustrating a range of phenomena subsumed in the concept of innovation spaces. It presents new conceptualizations of innovation as a dynamic, territorially unfettered process, and describes alternative forms of proximity and distance in innovation processes, issues that have been largely neglected to date in the discourse on the relationship between innovation and space

Abstract: Critical Toponymy: Place names in political, historical and commercial landscapes contains a selection of double-blind peer-reviewed papers from the 4th International Symposium on Place Names that took place 18-20 September 2017 in Windhoek, Namibia. These papers present current thinking on how the critical turn in social sciences is manifested in toponymic research, not only locally but also internationally. As such it includes research on place names from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Austria, Slovenia, Central America and even the former Czechoslovakia. The contributions show that the etymology of place names are never purely linguistic - social, political, commercial and other factors influence the giving, use and adaptations of these linguistic and cultural artefacts. Furthermore, given their high symbolic content, place names also serve as political and commercial currency. Place names are therefore important symbolic markers in preserving or changing cultural identities, and in marking or facilitating socio-political changes and relations. Critical Toponymy showcases the many ways in which the representational potential of place names can be deployed in different contexts. Scholars as well as practitioners in toponymy and sociolinguistics will find this an illuminating read

Abstract: He was twice the winner of the Pulitzer Prize in fiction: in 1919 for The Magnificent Ambersons and in 1922 for Alice Adams. His play Clarence launched Alfred Lunt on his distinguished career and provided Helen Hayes with an early successful role. His Penrod books continued the American boy-story tradition which started with the works of Mark Twain. Early in this century, through his novel The Turmoil, he warned of sacrificing the environment to industrial growth. Yet, since his death in 1946, Booth Tarkington-this writer from the Midwest who accomplished so much-has faded from the memory of the reading public, and many of his works are out of print. But his memory is fresh and vivid in the mind of his grandniece Susanah Mayberry, and her recollections of him leap from the pages of her book. She recalls that as a small child, before she was aware of her uncle's fame as a writer, he emerged as the one figure whose outline was clear among the blur of forms that made up her large family. "No one who met Booth Tarkington ever forgot him," says his great-niece. So, she introduces the reader to this multifaceted individual: the young man-about-town, the prankster, the writer of humorous letters (who drew caricatures in the margins), the bereaved father, the inspiration of the affection of three women (simultaneously), and the lover and collector of art objects and portraits. The author of this volume draws primarily upon her own personal experiences, family lore, and letters (some never published before) to portray her amiable uncle. She tells of the pleasure it gave him to entertain his young nephews and nieces at his Tudor-style winter home in Indianapolis - where they played a spirited form of charades. She recalls vacations which she, as a college student, spent at his light-filled summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine - where she met his famous neighbors. During all of those times, Uncle Booth was the keen observer of youth, who created Penrod and friends from his observations, and the teacher o f youth, who transmitted his own love of art to his young relations. While recapturing memories of the unforgettable Tarkington, Mayberry recreates an era of elegant and leisurely living, when on the dining table "in the fingerbowls . . . were nosegays of sweet peas and lemon verbena or geranium leaves." Susanah Mayberry shares with the reader a treasure of family photographs including Tarkington at various ages; interiors and exteriors of his homes; her father and uncles as children (the models of Penrod); the writer's indomitable sister who championed his early work; and his devoted second wife, a "gentle dragon," who kept his day-to-day life running smoothly. Indiana residents will feel "at home" with the frequent references to the state and its people. Indianapolis of the late nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries influenced Tarkington and his work. The city was his birthplace and his death place. He spent a year at Purdue University where he met such "brilliancies" as George Ade and John McCutcheon. Other famous and not-so-famous Hoosiers became a part of Tarkington's life, and they-along with international literary, theatrical, and political luminaries-reappear in Susanah Mayberry's recollections of her amiable uncle

Abstract: Originally published in 1980. The first section of The Novel-Machine consists of five short chapters that rewrite Autobiography as an undisguised theory of realistic fiction, exploring its paradoxes while placing it in the context of mid-Victorian criticism. Chapters 6 and 7 survey the manifestations in Trollope's novels of what his theory sets down as the primary difference of realism: its way of telling its readers how to read. Chapter 8 is a close reading of He Knew He Was Right, a neglected novel that, in Kendrick's estimation, deserves to stand in much higher critical esteem than it does. Kendrick shows how deeply woven into the texture of Trollope's writing the rhetoric of realism is. Kendrick's reading is a departure from the usual method of criticizing Trollope-surveying the whole of his work a novel at a time, saying a little about every novel and always too little about each

Abstract: "Based on the Duffy Lectures, a yearly lecture series at Boston College, this book explores the theme of "Deep Incarnation" as a way of making connections between incarnation and the whole of creation, including the costs built into our evolutionary world. The key question of "Deep Incarnation," for Edwards, is: "What relationship is there between the wider natural world, the world of galaxies and stars, mountains and seas, bacteria, plants and animals, and the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ?" To approach this theme, Edwards draws upon the work of Niels Gregersen (the "father of Deep Incarnation"), Elizabeth Johnson, and others. He then engages with Irenaeus, Athanius, and Karl Rahner as three great witnesses to a deep view of incarnation, and concludes with his own constructive approach to the book's theme."

Abstract: In the absence of a widely accepted and common definition of social enterprise (SE), a large research project, the ""International Comparative Social Enterprise Models"" (ICSEM) Project, was carried out over a five-year period; it involved more than 200 researchers from 55 countries and relied on bottom-up approaches to capture the SE phenomenon. This strategy made it possible to take into account and give legitimacy to locally embedded approaches, thus resulting in an analysis encompassing a wide diversity of social enterprises, while simultaneously allowing for the identification of major SE models to delineate the field on common grounds at the international level. These SE models reveal or confirm an overall trend towards new ways of sharing the responsibility for the common good in today's economies and societies. We tend to consider as good news the fact that social enterprises actually stem from all parts of the economy. Indeed, societies are facing many complex challenges at all levels, from the local to the global level. The diversity and internal variety of SE models are a sign of a broadly shared willingness to develop appropriate-although sometimes embryonic-responses to these challenges, on the basis of innovative economic/business models driven by a social mission. In spite of their weaknesses, social enterprises may be seen as advocates for and vehicles of the general interest across the whole economy. Of course, the debate about privatisation, deregulation and globalised market competition-all factors that may hinder efforts in the search for the common good-has to be addressed as well. The first of a series of four ICSEM books, Social Enterprise in Asia will serve as a key reference and resource for teachers, researchers, students, experts, policy makers, journalists and other categories of people who want to acquire a broad understanding of the phenomena of social enterprise and social entrepreneurship as they emerge and develop across the world

Abstract: Die finnlandschwedische Künstlerin Tove Jansson (1914-2010) war Autorin, Malerin und Karikaturistin zugleich.

Abstract: With this article, we introduce our project for enlarging the Italian-Russian parallel corpus of the NKRJa (Nacional'nyj korpus russkogo jazyka) and outline several of its current and future applications. The newly expanded corpus has now reached roughly four million words, and we expect to reach 20 million, the size required for a corpus that is balanced and reliable. In order to illustrate possible applications for the Italian-Russian parallel corpus, we offer two examples: the first is its experimental use in the teaching of translation at the University of Bologna; the second its use in the context of research in Russian-Italian Contrastive Linguistics on the topic of the non-temporal qualities of the Russian future tense

She examines this watershed period in the city's social and cultural history from the perspective of the town's ordinary men and women, both white and African American, recreating the determined community of laborers, artisans, tradesmen, mechanics, and seamen who demonstrated an incredible perseverance in reshaping their shattered town and lives.

Abstract: The anonymous Choždenie na Florentijskij sobor is one of four works written by Russian envoys to the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-1439), an event that sealed the union of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. This article addresses the problem of that unknown author's social status, an issue of controversy in the several studies devoted to this text beginning in the 19th century. Our linguistic and stylistic analysis examines the author in terms of his cultural literacy and explores how his conception of literary standards was shaped by specific experiences of reading and writing

Abstract: Originally published in 1973. Literary critics who have studied tragedy and the tragic vision failed, in Murray Krieger's estimation, to define exactly what they saw as the tragic vision in general terms. An aim of his book is to create a tentative definition of tragic and to flesh out what the author sees as the definition most illuminating of modern literature and the modern mind. In order to do this, Krieger distinguishes between what he sees as the "tragic vision" and "tragedy"-tragedy, from his perspective, is an object's literary form, whereas tragic vision refers to a subject's psychology, the subject's view and version of reality. In light of the shriveling of the tragic concept in the modern world and the reduction of a total view to the psychology of the protagonist, Krieger contends that the protagonist in a tragedy is now more appropriately designated a "tragic visionary" than a "tragic hero."
