Abstract: The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline. Planning is here much more than the addition of individual histories; however, historiography has treated this history very selective regarding geography and content. This book searches for an understanding of the historiography of planning in a European dimension. Scholars from Eastern and Western, Southern and Northern Europe address the issues of the public led production of city and the social functions of urban planning in capitalist and state-socialist countries. The examined examples include Poland and USSR, Czech Republic and Slovakia, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain, Italy, and Sweden. The book will be of interest to students and scholars for Urbanism, Urban/Town Planning, Spatial Planning, Spatial Politics, Urban Development, Urban Policies, Planning History and European History of the 20th Century

Abstract: Wenn Menschen miteinander musizieren, koordinieren und synchronisieren sie ihre Handlungen so präzise, dass sie ein hörbares Kollektivgebilde konstruieren: Gemeinsame Musik. Das ist eine herausragende Leistung, die ein Grundinteresse adressiert, das nicht nur die Musiksoziologie, sondern die Soziologie und Sozialtheorie gleichermaßen betrifft: Wie gelingt es Handelnden, gemeinsam Soziales zu erschaffen? Die Untersuchung baut auf Alfred Schütz‘ klassischem Aufsatz „Gemeinsam Musizieren“ auf und folgt der Frage, wie es Musiker:innen gelingt, mit Noten und Instrumenten gemeinsam zu musizieren und wie dies durch die Spielenden erlebt wird. Sie wird anhand von Streichensembles untersucht, die ohne Dirigierende musizieren. Durch die Integration von Videographie, fokussierter und lebensweltanalytischer Ethnographie wird der Blick keineswegs auf situatives Musizieren verengt, sondern die institutionelle und organisationale Ordnung des Forschungsfeldes systematisch integriert. Sozialtheoretisch wird die Untersuchung mit dem Kommunikativen Konstruktivismus gerahmt. Dies ist ein Open-Access-Buch

Abstract: Questions of authorship are central to the late thirteenth-century motet repertoire represented by the seventh section or fascicle of the Montpellier Codex (Montpellier, Bibliothèque interuniversitaire, Section de médecine, H. 196, hereafter Mo). Mo does not explicitly attribute any of its compositions, but theoretical sources name Petrus de Cruce as the composer of the two motets that open fascicle 7, and three later motets in this fascicle are elsewhere ascribed to Adam de la Halle. This monograph reveals a musical and textual quotation of Adam’s Aucun se sont loe incipit at the outset of Petrus’s Aucun ont trouve triplum, and it explores various invocations of Adam and Petrus – their works and techniques – within further anonymous compositions. Authorship is additionally considered from the perspective of two new types of motets especially prevalent in fascicle 7: motets that name musicians, as well as those based on vernacular song or instrumental melodies, some of which are identified by the names of their creators. This book offers new insights into the musical, poetic, and curatorial reception of thirteenth-century composers’ works in their own time. It uncovers, beneath the surface of an anonymous motet book, unsuspected interactions between authors and traces of compositional identities

Abstract: Kurt Reinhard ist einer der bedeutendsten Musikwissenschaftler und Ethnomusikologen, der die Notwendigkeit der transkulturellen Kommunikation frühzeitig erkannte und sich zusammen mit seiner Frau Ursula Reinhard tatkräftig für deren Verwirklichung einsetzte. Beide Leben belegen eindrucksvoll diesen Einsatz. Musikologische Feldforschungen in der Türkei (1955-1993) bildeten die Grundlage einer umfangreichen Sammlung von Quellenmaterialien zur Türkei. Darauf aufbauend entstanden einschlägige systematische und ethnomusikologische Studien, unter anderem zu Musikinstrumenten, zu âşık-Liedern, zur Roma-Musik, zur Geschichte der türkischen Volks- und Kunstmusik. Neben den Grundlagenforschungen und einschlägigen Studien war das Forscher-Ehepaar zugleich bestrebt, den deutsch-türkischen Kulturdialog zu fördern und die transkulturelle Verständigung zu verbessern. Der vorliegende Band bezweckt, das ethnomusikologische Wirken, die Lebensläufe und Bibliographien des Ehepaares Reinhard möglichst umfassend zu dokumentieren und die Verdienste um eine über fünfzigjährige Wirkungs- und Entwicklungsgeschichte, nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg bis zur Jahrhundertwende, im Kontext der Vergleichenden Musikwissenschaft zu würdigen.

Abstract: Gender inequality is universally understood to be a continued problem in the music industry. This open access book presents research that uses an industry-based approach to examine why this gender imbalance has proven so hard to shift, and explores strategies that are being adopted to try and bring about meaningful change in terms of women and gender diverse people establishing ongoing careers in music. Abstract: From the 1920s on, popular music in Southeast Asia was a mass-audience phenomenon that drew new connections between indigenous musical styles and contemporary genres from elsewhere to create new, hybrid forms. Abstract: Drive the streets of Nairobi, and you are sure to see many matatus—colorful minibuses that transport huge numbers of people around the city. Once ramshackle affairs held together with duct tape and wire, matatus today are name-brand vehicles maxed out with aftermarket detailing. They can be stately black or extravagantly colored, sporting names, slogans, or entire tableaus, with airbrushed portraits of everyone from Kanye West to Barack Obama. In this richly interdisciplinary book, Kenda Mutongi explores the history of the matatu from the 1960s to the present. As Mutongi shows, matatus offer a window onto the socioeconomic and political conditions of late-twentieth-century Africa. In their diversity of idiosyncratic designs, they reflect multiple and divergent aspects of Kenyan life—including, for example, rapid urbanization, organized crime, entrepreneurship, social insecurity, the transition to democracy, and popular culture—at once embodying Kenya’s staggering social problems as well as the bright promises of its future. Offering a shining model of interdisciplinary analysis, Mutongi mixes historical, ethnographic, literary, linguistic, and economic approaches to tell the story of the matatu and explore the entrepreneurial aesthetics of the postcolonial world

Abstract: David A. McDonald rethinks the conventional history of the Palestinian crisis through an ethnographic analysis of music and musicians, protest songs, and popular culture. Charting a historical narrative that stretches from the late-Ottoman period through the end of the second Palestinian intifada, McDonald examines the shifting politics of music in its capacity to both reflect and shape fundamental aspects of national identity. Drawing case studies from Palestinian communities in Israel, in exile, and under occupation, McDonald grapples with the theoretical and methodological challenges of tracing "resistance" in the popular imagination, attempting to reveal the nuanced ways in which Palestinians have confronted and opposed the traumas of foreign occupation. Abstract: Current economic growth strategies around the world are rapidly depleting natural resources and eco-systems. Just Transitions provides an overview of these challenges from a Global South perspective. How do developing countries eradicate poverty via economic development, while encountering the consequences of global warming and dwindling supplies of clean water, productive soils, cheap oil, minerals and other resources? How do they address widening inequalities, as well as the need to rebuild ecosystem services and natural resources? This book considers a just transition, which reconciles the sustainable use of natural resources with a pervasive commitment to sufficiency (where over-consumers are satisfied with less so that under-consumers can secure enough). It synthesises a range of different literatures to illuminate new ways of thinking from a sustainability perspective. It rethinks development with special reference to the greening of the developmental state, explores the key role that cities could play in the transition to a more sustainably urbanised world, highlights the neglect of soils and examines the potential of sustainable agriculture to feed the world. Case studies drawn from Africa detail the challenges, but they are set in the context of global trends. The authors conclude with their experience of building a community that aspires to live sustainably

Evvela eski yazıya aşina olmak lazım tabii. Yahut bir buçuk kiloluk sergi kitabını mihmandar edinmeniz gerek kendinize. Nitekim biz de öyle yaptık. Elimizde kitap, kulağımızda evvel zaman içinden bir seda, gözümüz ise notlarda, sarı sayfalarda, kırık plaklarda, siyah beyaz vesikalıklarda. Birden Osmanlı son dönem saray eşrafından olup çıkmışım meğerse. Bir meclisteyiz... Sağımda bestekâr Bimen Efendi oturuyor vakur duruşunu seriyor önümüze. Neyzen Raşit Efendi ise başlıyor üflemeye, bir selam vermeye fırsatımız olmadı hani. Udi Kirkor Efendi eşlik ediyor neyin o hüzünlü sesine. Notacı Hacı Emin Bey ise dikkat kesilmiş dinlemekte. Tanburi Cemil Bey durur mu efendim, o da geldi meşke. Biz ise çok uzaktan bir misafir. Sükut etmek düştü bize de. Bir yanımız meşk meclisinde bağdaş kurmuş oturadursun, diğer yanımız sarayın odalarında bizi hallere sokan somut nesnelere baksın dünya gözüyle. Uzun zamana yayılmış, köklü Osmanlı musikisinin değişim sürecinin öncesi ve sonrası, İstanbul 2010 Avrupa Kültür Başkenti Ajansı Kültürel Miras ve Müzeler Direktörlüğü projeleri kapsamında hayata geçirilen sergi ve dinletilerle gözler önüne seriliyor bugünlerde. Gönül Paçacı'nın koleksiyonundan derlenen sergi Osmanlı musikisinin derinlemesine incelenerek köklü müzik tarihine adeta ışık tutuyor. Uzun zamandır planlanan müzik müzesine giden yolda da bir adım atılmasına öncülük etmiş, kültürel mirasa ilişkin bilinmeyenlerin bir kısmı daha gün ışığına çıkmış böylelikle. , Büyük Mabeyn'de ince saz takımlarına mahsus nota mecmuasından Huseyni faslına, Hareket Ordusu'na ve mehter mirkumandanına ait Marş-ı Askerisi'nden Terane-i Şükran'a, 'Güş-i cana geldi, Ben esir-i aşkın oldum' notlarından, plaklardan, çeşitli yayınevlerine ait boş nota defterlerine, elle çoğaltılarak pullu ve damgalı olarak satılan notalara, musiki gazetelerine, notalı kartpostallara kadar Osmanlı müziğine ait ne varsa salonun dört bir yanında temaşa edilmeyi bekliyor. Hasılı Osmanlı musikisinin değişim sürecine dair ipucu taşıyan her ayrıntı sergi mekânında yer bulmuş kendine. Sergi kapsamında Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ve Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin ilk yıllarında eski harflerle basılmış müzik malzemeleri arasından seçilen eserlerin dönem kayıtlarını dinleme imkânı da var. Sergi kitabı ile de İstanbul'un kültür zenginliğinin ses boyutunu araştırmak isteyen araştırmacılara önemli referanslar sunuluyor. Osmanlı musiki geleneğinin bir asırdan daha az bir zamanda eski harflerle basılmış dilimine bakarak, Batı kültürüyle etkileşime girmesi, yerli müziğin farklı ifade biçimleri kazanıyor olması gibi sonuçlar da anlatılmaya çalışılıyor. Bu yayınlar içinde ses sistemi, ana dizi, kuram, Osmanlı müziğinin ses aralıklarının yeni yazım sistemine uyarlanması tartışmaları gibi ayrıntılar da izlenebiliyor. Tüm bu malzemeyi detaylandıran, müzik teorisi ve toplumun müzik ihtiyacı ile ilişkilendiren 'Osmanlı Müziğini Okumak' isimli bir kitap da sergi ile paralel olarak hazırlanmış.
