    Abstract: Genoese merchants, who certainly did not disappear after 1627, during the second half of the century were able to establish new global-scale commercial networks on a par with those of other merchant communities (those of the Jews for instance). In the 1660s and for a few decades, Genoese goods - paper and fabrics - sailed to the Indies with African slaves. On their way back, the same Genoese ships would carry tonnes of silver and a wealth of other colonial goods thereby increasing trade with the East. This commercial framework is the backdrop to the story of Nicolò and Pietro Francesco Fieschi, two brothers whose lives testify how between the second half of the seventeenth century and the early decades of the eighteenth century, merchants from Genoa certainly had not withdrawn from international commerce focusing only on financial profits. On the contrary they were able to find new commercial momentum in opportunities provided by the connections brought about by the ever-more globalised world

    Abstract: Lucca occupies a special place in the history and historiography of the early Middle Ages in Italy and Europe. It was the heart of a political body of the Carolingian galaxy, namely the marque of Tuscia, which enjoyed exceptional success and remained vital throughout most of the 11th century. It is also one of the areas most accounted for in sources: the documentation on the Lucca area starting from the beginning of the 8th century is extraordinarily conspicuous and continuous. Hence the choice of this case study, to reflect again on overall historical transformations. This book starts from a systematic research on the documentary sources of Lucca, so wide that they are still largely unexplored, and aims at reconstructing the fundamental parameters that governed the functioning of a court society, and at following its transformation processes up to the noble and chivalric age. Their main distinctive trait is naturalism, which in different shapes and degrees permeates every facing, thus becoming a sort of local inflection, which contaminates even the most up-to-date languages.     Abstract: The exhibition at Villa La Quiete focuses on three important Renaissance sculptures, which had never been exposed to the public before. On this occasion, the works were carefully restored, continuing on the path of the previous restauration of the Villa's artistic heritage at the hands of the University of Florence; the new restoration was supported by the Terna group, whose liberal donation helped restore one of the works on display, namely the beautiful in stucco Madonna with Child from Lorenzo Ghiberti's workshop. This work comes with a rare terracotta piece of a Madonna with Child, by one of Donatello's followers, and a Christ, the Saviour, in painted terracotta as well, made by the artist Agnolo di Polo, who trained in Andrea Verrocchio's workshop. The three sculptures are a part of the oldest core of the Villa's collections, and represent a relevant example of the refined production of the multifaceted workshops of the Renaissance in Florence

    Abstract: This paper analyses the rise of Swedish trade and shipping in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth century. It focuses on three factors that shaped Sweden's role in the area: foreign policy interest, foreign trade policy (mercantilism), and commodity demand and supply. The foreign policy interest is represented by attempts to build an alliance with the Ottoman Empire against Russia. An outcome of this was the short-lived Swedish Levant Company. The second factor relates to Sweden's mercantilist policy in the Mediterranean, embodied in the Swedish Navigation Act, trade and peace treaties with the North-African states, and the consular services in southern Europe.     Abstract: What was the Roman Inquisition? How did inquisitors operate in the Italian society of the 16th and 17th century? In an attempt to answer these questions, the author analyses the inquisitors' familia , the Court of Faith's large group of assistants. In the light of rich unpublished records, this research is the first to reconstruct the events around the Holy Office's "staff", which consisted of vicars, notaries, lawyers, consultants, policemen, bodyguards and many others. The publication deals with the issues related to these officers, their geographic distribution and the brotherhoods used for their classification. In 1774 the court of Vienna charged Johann Ignaz Felbiger with reforming the schools and his book on penmanship (1775) became the standard reference for how to write. In 1776 the Court sought a book on penmanship to be used specifically in Serbian and Vlach schools; the textbook of Zaharija Orfelin (1778) came into being to fill this need. The textbooks of both Felbiger and Orphelin have their basis in Felbiger's first book on penmanship (1768). We also explore the possibility that other European handwriting manuals served as models for earlier works by Orfelin (1759, 1776)

The friars faced a crisis in missionary optimism in the face of an alleged indigenous resistance to Christianity or to European social rules. The Portuguese colonial sources reveal evangelization as a field of dispute between the friars, the natives and the colonists, motivating daily conflicts, also encouraging changes in the social and symbolic traditions inside or near the missions. The indigenous people were not passive subjects in the process, contradicting the missionaries for the determination with which, supposedly, they practiced their "gentile" customs and rites.     Abstract: Following Fernand Braudel's Méditerranée, historians interpreted the Mediterranean, Baltic, Atlantic, Indian Ocean or Pacific as closed maritime systems, consisting of multiple micro-environments. This essay seeks to overcome these limited perspectives and to examine, how the various seas and oceans were connected by the Vikings, the Cairo Genizah merchants and the Italian trading companies of the Middle Ages. The second part of my article "Connected Seas" examines the perception and memory of the seas as an element of maritime connectivity. It introduces the concept of realm of memory (lieu de mémoire) into maritime history and tests it in four case studies on the Sound, the Straits of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles and the Straits of Malacca

This collection of international contributions, as well as celebrating Maria Edgeworth's 250th anniversary, proposes some further investigation on two fundamental aspects of her thought and legacy, still little examined in depth: her interest in the education of the young (and of the adults supposed to educate them) in an empirical perspective, explicitly scientific, open to different religious confessions and addressed to all social classes; and the urge for a wider and shared tolerance for alterity. The various essays in the collection offer some insight on the multi-layered relationships between the universe of education and its relationship with the development of knowledge, literature - particularly children's literature - and pedagogy, as well as between women's emancipation and the development of both individual and social identity.     Abstract: Gerasim Zelic (1752-1828) is one of the most emblematic figures of the Serbian cultural scene between the 18th and 19th century. He as an archimandrite of the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Krupa, a diplomat and a writer. From 1794 to 1811, Zelic held the position of Vicar-General of the Serbs in Dalmatia and, as such, was one of the main actors of the events related to the confessional controversy that stirred the region at the time. His autobiography, entitled Žitije and published in Budapest in 1823, also places him among the protagonists of a crucial period for the birth of the new Serbian literature. Following a multidisciplinary approach, the essays collected in the volume Gerasim Zelic e il suo tempo analyse Gerasim Zelic's story, his involvement in the events related to the confessional controversy in Dalmatia and his literary activity, bringing the discussion to the era in which the Serbian archimandrite lived. Particular attention is paid to the context in which Zelic worked, namely the Balkan peninsula, as well as to the cultural history of the Serbs of Hungary between the 18th and 19th century

    Abstract: The murder of Emanuele Notarbartolo, former director of the Banco di Palermo, at the hands of the Sicilian Mafia in 1893 represents a controversial and obscure event in Italian history. There were three trials (Milan, Bologna, Florence), which also involved a Sicilian deputy: Raffaele Palizzolo. Anna Franchi's documentation work takes place in the Assize court of Florence: she attended every hearing, and observed relentlessly both the 'Mafia' phenomenon and the actual theatre of testimonies, confessions, retractions and false tracks characterising the trial in Florence (1903-1904). It was possible to widely integrate Franchi's account after the discovery of the entire folder relating to the process in the State Archives of Florence: about 1500 handwritten pages by the various chancellors dealing with the trial.     Abstract: Numerous and rich materials in yet unpublished archives provide information on the coproduction of several Italian and Soviet films, the first of which is Giuseppe De Santis's Attack and Retreat (1961-1964), representing almost four years' of work. This article examines radically different versions of the script, the minutes of meetings in which these scripts were reviewed by both parties, and other documents relating to process of joint production to reveal a number of curious details. We also demonstrate that this was a far from peaceful process and that the tortuous progress made by the partners was symptomatic of political and cultural issues in their countries of origin

    Abstract: In the decades prior to the Revolution of 1917, the Russian intelligencija was strongly influenced by Western European intellectuals, including Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche was one of the European philosophers who played a prominent role in shaping Russian perceptions of reality in this period, although his thought was interpreted by Russians in contrasing ways. The article examines the case of Dmitrij Merežkovskij, reassessing the extent of Nietzsche's influence on his oeuvre. In our view, Nietzsche did not only influence Merežkovskij's early poetry, where aesthetic and anti-Christian views prevail, but also contributed to the sensual and individualist nature of his later prose
