    Abstract: This book outlines a short profile of Italy's linguistic history, and discusses some current problems related to globalization, the values of the mother tongue and multilingualism, and the need to re-found the Italian and European linguistic policy on a new basis. Contemporary Italian is a particularly stratified cultural asset in which, alongside the many new elements, one can grasp the clear and precious signs of a very strong connection with the past. Today, in the European scene, Italy indeed stands out for its accentuated multilingualism and the long duration of its national language. On the one hand, the extraordinary animal and plant biodiversity in the country corresponds to an extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity; on the other, the Italians feel that the language used by Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio still belongs to them, and has fundamental traits coinciding with their own. Such richness is particularly appreciated abroad (as evidenced by the growing demand for Italian speakers in the world) and deserves to be better acknowledged by the younger generations. It also deserves to be protected and valued with appropriate tools, starting with a decisive rethinking of the country's linguistic policy

    Abstract: The author addresses the issue of the conquest of Caucasus at the hand of the Tsarist army, investigating the attitude held towards this event by three of the major authors of nineteenth-century Russian literature: Aleksandr Puškin (1799-1837), Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) and Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), expressed through some of their most famous works. As for Puškin, the analysis touches the three main Southern Poems, as well as the account of his trip to Arzrum in 1829 on the Russian-Turkish war theatre, and the drama Boris Godunov, dedicated above all to the matter of power, in which however the will to create an empire imposes itself. The analysis of Lermontov's works, in addition to the poem The novice, set in Georgia, is also about the short story Bela, which is part of the 'novel' A hero of our time. The short story was chosen for its clear display of the Russian officers' attitude of contempt towards the indigenous Caucasians. The analysis of Tolstoy starts with the young author's position in the 1850s, when he was a voluntary fighter in the Caucasus, as shown in the story The raid. Then, the analysis moves to the position of the 'mature' Tolstoy, a pacifist and anti-militarist, who expresses his ideas in the long story Hadji Murat

    Abstract: Just over 150 epistolary pieces, from the twentieth-century archives of Florence and Rome, are published for the first time thanks to Alberto Baldi's careful transcription, which does not only allow the reconstruction of the story of a friendship born around the pages of newspapers and consolidated over time to involve the partners of the two writers (Gianna Manzini, Lina Baraldi and Luisa Babini), but also follows Giuseppe Dessí's presence in one of the most widely read newspapers in Rome. The editorial correspondence, started early by Falqui, the "mover of culture" and through frequency peaks (from 1948 to 1958), soon turned into the advice of a sympathetic reader who, despite the political dissensions for the conservative line of the newspaper "Il Tempo", deserves the credit of having continued a collaboration which would nourish some of the writer's most significant collections of short stories.     Abstract: Dotawo: A Journal of Nubian Studies offers a multi-disciplinary, diachronic view of all aspects of Nubian civilization. It brings to Nubian studies a new approach to scholarly knowledge: an open-access collaboration with DigitalCommonsFairfield, an institutional repository of Fairfield University in Connecticut, USA, and open-access publishing house punctum books. The first two volumes of Dotawo have their origins in a Nubian language panel organized by Angelika Jakobi within the Nilo-Saharan Linguistics Colloquium held at the University of Cologne, May 22 to 24, 2013. Since many invited participants from Sudan were unable to get visas due to the shutdown of the German Embassy in Khartoum at that time, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation funded the organization of a second venue of specialists on modern Nubian languages. This so-called “Nubian Panel 2" was hosted by the Institute of African & Asian Studies at the University of Khartoum on September 18 and 19, 2013. This volume publishes the proceedings of that panel.     Abstract: The title of this volume refers to a reality which is often dramatically experienced, in different historical phases, by all the territories where Slavic cultures lived in contact with other ethnic groups. Beyond the problems of coexistence, which is additionally complicated today by phenomena such as globalisation and multiculturalism that disguise identity conflicts, the history of the Slavs has always been intertwined with that of other peoples. Therefore, it seemed appropriate to propose the recurrent theme of "borders", which offers ample space for reflection on a multiplicity of aspects of Slavic cultures. Today Italy still looks at the countries of Central and Eastern Europe with a certain skepticism. The languages and traditions of this area remain little or not at all known. The migratory flows of the peoples in the past twenty years have contributed to creating the image of a backward Europe of secondary importance, which wants to impose itself on the Europe of primary importance. This collective volume, on the other hand, wants to show how we can strive to understand our identity as Europeans only by widening our gaze to the east and learning the lesson of the territories of Central and Eastern Europe. Even if the western Slavs and part of the southern Slavs have participated in western history since the Middle Ages and were then divided by historical events, a new European identity can be forged only by reflecting on the events of the entire Slavic world, and experiencing the same difficulties of coexistence (as is now also the experience of western Europe) between residents and immigrants, majority and minority cultures, identity and otherness

    Abstract: This volume springs from that fruitful project of scientific cooperation between the humanities departments of Università di Firenze and University of Arizona which was the Forum for the Study of the Literary Cultures of the Southwest (2000-2007). Tri-cultural, at least (Native, Hispanic and Anglo-American), and multi-lingual, today's Southwest presents a complex coexistence of different cultures, the equal of which would be hard to find elsewhere in the United States. Of this virtually inexhaustible object of study, the essays here collected tackle an ample range of themes. While the majority of them are concerned with the literatures of the Southwest, still a good third falls into the fields of history, art history, ethnography, sociology or cultural studies. They are partitioned in four sections, the first three reflecting the chronology of the stratification of the three major cultures and the fourth highlighting one of the most sensitive topics in and about contemporary Southwest - the borderlands/la frontera

    Abstract: This volume contains Italian contributions to the XV Slavists' International Congress (Minsk, 20-27 August 2013). In the wake of the best Italian Slavic tradition, the lecturers present a wide range of themes in different languages, ranging from the Cyril-Methodian question to the critical reflection on contemporary authors. Despite the diversity of disciplinary and methodological approaches - from paleography to textual analysis, from literary comparative studies to sociolinguistics - these contributions show that Italian Slavistic studies maintains their roots, critically developing previous studies and opening up new perspectives for research, while a new generation of scholars is born. As in the past, Italian studies on Slavistics are playing a significant role not only in Italy's cultural relations with the Slavic countries, but more generally on the perspective of a vast and complex process of integration of the various European cultures, which goes further beyond the borders of the European Union; a process in which the Slavic world, with its variety of languages and cultures, is one of the main actors

    Abstract: La notion de « bon usage » évoque immédiatement dans le contexte de la France les noms de Claude Favre de Vaugelas (1585-1650) et de Maurice Grevisse (1895-1980), deux colosses de la codification du français moderne qui date du xviie siècle. Ce concept, aujourd'hui chargé de connotations archaïques et élitistes, est souvent perçu comme un ensemble de prescriptions normatives correspondant à un certain modèle socioculturel. Le passage de I'« usage » au « bon usage » semble impliquer une transition d'un modèle descriptif à un modèle prescriptif, de la norme objective fondée sur l'usage statistiquement dominant à la norme prescriptive. Le but de ce volume est d'examiner, par différentes études de cas, si l'établissement d'un bon usage aboutit forcément à une réduction des variantes. Le volume constitue un premier essai pour déterminer dans quelle mesure le « bon usage » est un concept typiquement français et à quel point les mêmes idées, termes et modèles se retrouvent dans d'autres traditions nationales
