Kurzfassung: Plutarch distinguishes Alexander king of Macedonia as a genius in military art and diplomacy to consolidate his power. During his life, just a little more than 30 years, the young king changed the political and cultural map of his time: he put a large European, African, and Asiatic space under his authority, promoted an intercultural globalisation to unify a multiplicity of peoples as a huge empire, and transferred the intellectual centre of the world from Athens to other oriental cities. But an unmeasured ambition harmed all his project and even its author’s life. By pairing Caesar with Alexander, Plutarch brings out the fame of a great conqueror, the aspect of personality that the biographer most admires in this Roman statesman. But the ambition (philotimia) that repeatedly moves Caesar represents the black side that will lead him to the death, before he can reap the fruits of his eagerness. Although not completely transforming Caesar into a cruel tyrant (which he was not), this Life illustrates, however, a criticism of the exacerbated and irrational ambition of power

Kurzfassung: This volume offers the first translation into Portuguese of the History of plants, by Theophrastus. The nature of the subject needed the collaboration of a Hellenist and a Botanist, in order to ensure the accuracy of the translation and the specificity of the footnotes and indexes. Beside the large number of footnotes, there is an introduction that identifies Theophrastus, his intellectual circle and the scientific structure of his exposition. The volume also includes a bibliography and seven indexes: two of Greek nomenclature and its translation into Portuguese, referring to the chapters of Theophrastus’ text; four of Latin names given to the vegetal and animal species, referring to the footnotes; and a last one of toponyms

Kurzfassung: By celebrating the 2400th anniversary of the founding of Plato's Academy, this book gathers ten contributions concerning the founder of the Academy, his school and work, as well as the influence Plato exerted on later authors (from antiquity to the present), and the reception of his legacy throughout history. The themes explored in the five initial chapters focus on the analysis of various topics treated in individual Pla -tonic dialogues. To begin, the Phaedrusis considered for its significance regarding the philosophical conception of a “supra-heavenly place”. The next two chapters reflect upon Platonic paideia, first on the pedagogical princi-ples of The Statesman, and next on the analysis of sports activities in The Republic and inThe Laws. The dramatic and philosophical implications arising out of the multicultural origins of the characters in The Laws are brought into perspective alongside an insight drawn from the banquet, considered a model on which a philosophic com-munity can be constituted. The five remaining chapters have a general focus on Plato’s presence in later authors (from Neoplatonism to contemporary literature), as well the influence of the Academy

Kurzfassung: Despite its tensions and contradictions, the various discourses on globalization hint at a desire to build a space and time for encounters between worlds and cultures, through the persistence of a dialogue that shortens the distances, but respects the differences. A considerable part of the political, cultural, urban, linguistic shape of the Western world drew inspirations and solutions from the experience of poleis and cosmopoleis of the Ancient World. On the other hand, mobility may even be perceived as a characteristic feature of Luso-Brazilian culture, from the Portuguese Discoveries and their cultural production in the early stages of Jesuit literature in Brazil, especially in José de Anchieta, down to António Vieira, Machado de Assis, Guimarães Rosa, among others. Therefore, the presence and the different hues respecting the topic of mobility and of old cosmopoleis in the reception of Classical Antiquity in Portuguese literature are as well a central theme of the volume

Kurzfassung: This book, prepared as a step in the academic cooperation between the CECH – Centro de Estudos Clássicos e Humanísticos of the UC – and the PRAGMA – Program of Ancient Philosophical Studies of the UFRJ -, includes several studies on the reception of Greco-Latin themes and models in the literature and culture of Portugal and Brazil. Its originality is a consequence of putting together two different cultures and several disciplines, as researchers come from Literature, Philosophy and Ancient History. The period considered, from the 16th to the 20th centuries, allows a global view of the cultural evolution of the two countries, in a good part made in common

Kurzfassung: The publication of Norma & Transgressão II was motivated by the wealth and variety of the reflection around the various ways in which each community experiences its own identity in the regulatory activity and gesture of rule-breaking, as well as, at a later stage, the integration of the transgressions executed (experienced as a new field of expanded identity). This dynamic, which cuts across many disciplinary areas, leads to the question of the boundaries of the individual(local) I and of the (global) community: what does it mean to be strange and not to be? to what extent does the tense connection between the normative and the transgressive constitute a process that determines collective and individual behaviour through which human beings learn, advance, and understand themselves and others? With its multidisciplinary and transhistorical character, this book is destined not only for postgraduate students of Classical Studies, but also for the broader public beyond the academic sphere

Kurzfassung: Identity is constructed through the interaction between the ‘I’ and the numerous ‘others’ that constitute its world. From this plurivocal dialogue results a diversity of ways of acting and thinking, responsible not only for the creation of norms but also for passing beyond the transmitted code, that is, for transgression. It is the constant updating of this dynamic correlation between norm and transgression that gives rise to progress (moving forwards) of the ‘I’, both individual and collective. In it lies the very nature of creative activity, the fascination for discovery, the impulse and need for revolution
