Based on extensive original research conducted in the late 1980s in a village in northern Thailand, this ethnographic study examines Hmong cosmological beliefs about the cycle of life as expressed in practices surrounding birth, marriage, and death, and the gender relationships evident in these practices." "The social framework of the Hmong (or Miao, as they are called in China, and Meo, in Thailand), who have lived on the fringes of powerful Southeast Asian states for centuries, is distinctly patrilineal, granting little direct power to women. Yet within the limits of this structure, Hmong women wield considerable influence in the spiritually critical realms of birth and death."--BOOK JACKET.

Abstract: "The tales in this collection are about everyday life with some fantastic elements. An African American mother and daughter confronts a German prisoner of war in one story, while in another a coal miner's gift for braying leads to a war between coal camps. Here are chronicles of a Mexican barber who extracts a ghoulish revenge for being forced to shave the beard of a killer; of the terrible fate that awaits boys who are lured into a dancehall during the Lenten season by the Devil and his beautiful cowgirls; and of an old coal miner who attempts to control his young wife by pretending to be the voice of the Lord
Abstract: Close shave for Black Jack Ketchum : Black Jack Ketchum risked more than a nick when he threatened to kill Juan Rael over a haircut and shave -- In the home of the brave : an African American mother confronts a Nazi soldier in her coal camp home -- Ol' mama lion : miner Fred Owensby intended to install an aerial on his car to catch radio waves but caught a mountain lion instead -- Feed him black chickens : even the Lord can't tame Fidel's young bride, Cimarron -- Mail-order Baba : through bad and good luck caused by squirrels, Pete Durocavich finally finds his mail-order bride / co-authored by Sharon K. García -- Making do on Johnson Mesa : a rootin' tootin' cowboy and his wife put a pitch baby to work to make ends meet on their small Johnson Mesa ranch -- Brother Bill's bait bites back : Brother Bill's bait bites worse than it smells -- Don't crowd me, mister : two old CS cowboys commiserate on the concerns of gnats, rattlesnakes, swallows, and such -- Mind your mothers : Gardiner Elementary School mothers trounce the titans of high school football -- Un cuento viejo = An old story : to prevent a transfer to Hell to work for Lucifer, an angel of the Lord must match wits with rowdy, tough guardian angels, and young lovers -- Ladies ride sidesaddle : when Arturo disobeys his mother, he pays the Devil on the Kiowa prairies.
Abstract: In other stories a lion who is accidentally caught and caged teaches a coal miner a lesson; two crusty cowboys come to understand the purpose of gnats and tumbleweeds and why rattlesnakes have rattles; and the Angel of Death is told to collect Hispanic souls or else. The account of a rootin'-tootin' cowboy and his wife who use a pitch-baby to trap a pesky jack rabbit and a fish story round out this multiethnic collection of tales. Recounted in a lively, humorous style, the stories show how ordinary people managed to conduct dignified and happy lives - with occasional help from the spirit world - in a difficult social and physical environment."--Jacket

Abstract: The Northwest Coast of North America was home to dozens of Native peoples at the time of its first contact with Europeans. The rich artistic, ceremonial, and oral traditions of these peoples and their preservation of cultural practices have made this region especially attractive for anthropological study. Coming to Shore provides a historical overview of the ethnology and ethnohistory of this region, with special attention given to contemporary, theoretically informed studies of communities and issues

Abstract: Over thirty scholars examine the development of folklore studies through the lens of over one hundred years of significant activity in a state that has provided grist for the mills of many prominent folklorists. In the past the Folklore Society of Utah has examined the work of such scholars in biographical and other essays published in its newsletters. This book incorporates those essays and goes well beyond them to include many other topices, offering a thorough history of folklore studies and a guide to resources for those pursuing research in Utah now and in the future. The essays survey the development and contributions of folklore studies in Utah from 1892 to 2004 but also represent developments in both academic and public-sector folklore throughout the United States. Following a thorough historical introduction, part I profiles the first folklorists working in the state, including Hector Lee, Thomas Cheney, Austin and Alta Fife, Wayland Hand, and Lester Hubbard. Part II looks at the careers of prominent Utah folklorists Jan Harold Brunvand, Barre Toelken, and William B. Wilson, as well as the works of the next, current generation of folklorists. Part III covers studies in major folklore genres, with essays on the study of material culture, vernacular architecture, and Mormon, ethnic, Native American, and Latino folklore. Part IV examines public folklore programs including organizations, conferences, and tourism. Back matter describes academic programs at Utah institutions of higher education, summarizes the holdings of the various folklore archives in the state, and provides a complete cross-indexed bibliography of articles, books, and recordings of Utah folklore.

Abstract: The ritual of rainmaking is one of half a dozen Japanese folk practices and festivals described in this book. The story of rainmaking ceremonies begins with personal experience and then draws on the work of Japanese folklorists to record significant local variations and to construct a general account of the history and purpose of the ceremony. Field research was conducted during study visits to Kyoto, to Tenri in Nara Prefecture and to Shiga Prefecture. The chapter order follows the year cycle, from New Year via early summer purificatory festivals and rainmaking ceremonial to the feas

Abstract: This book explores major shifts and reorientations in the recent history of American Anthropology, reflecting the author's vision of what anthropology is and what it has the potential to become. The book engages three fundamental intellectual-political challenges that American anthropology is destined to confront (or at its peril, avoid): becoming more self-reflexive, achieving theoretical and methodological holism, and defense of universal human rights

Abstract: Melville J. Herskovits and the Racial Politics of Knowledge is the first full-scale biography of the trailblazing anthropologist of African and African American cultures. Born into a world of racial hierarchy, Melville J. Herskovits (1895-1963) employed physical anthropology and ethnography to undermine racist and hierarchical ways of thinking about humanity and to underscore the value of cultural diversity. His research in West Africa, the West Indies, and South America documented the far-reaching influence of African cultures in the Americas. He founded the first major interdisciplinary American program in African studies in 1948 at Northwestern University, and his controversial classic The Myth of the Negro Past delineated African cultural influences on American blacks and showcased the vibrancy of African American culture. He also helped forge the concept of cultural relativism, particularly in his book Man and His Works. Drawing extensively on Herskovits's private papers and published works, Jerry Gershenhorn's biography recognizes Herskovits's many contributions and discusses the complex consequences of his conclusions, methodologies, and relations with African American scholars

Abstract: This beautifully illustrated volume features work by leading writers and experts on carnival from around the world, and includes two stunning photo essays by acclaimed photographers Pablo Delano and Jeffrey Chock. Editor Milla Cozart Riggio presents a body of work that takes the reader on a fascinating journey exploring the various aspects of carnival - its traditions, its history, its music, its politics - and prefaces each section with an illuminating essay. Traditional carnival theory, based mainly on the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and Victor Turner, has long defined carnival as inversive or subversive. The essays in this groundbreaking anthology collectively reverse that trend, offering a re-definition of 'carnival' that focuses not on the hierarchy it temporarily displaces or negates, but a one that is rooted in the actual festival event. Carnivaldetails its new theory in terms of a carnival that is at once representative and distinctive: The Carnival of Trinidad - the most copied yet least studied major carnival in the world

Abstract: "In one sense a folklorist's portrayal of a folk artist's life and art, Listening for a Life is equally a rethinking of the processes involved in such work, not only in how the folklorist conveys her subject but in how her subject constitutes and performs herself into being through dialogue with others: those present, those once present, those imagined and anticipated. Drawing on Bahktinian and feminist theory, Sawin pushes forward our understanding of the interactive roles of ethnographer and subject and in the process gives us a deeper understanding of folk singer and storyteller Bessie Eldreth and her greatest art, herself."--Jacket.

Abstract: "Elizabeth B. Pinson shares with us her memories of Alaska's emergence into a new and modern era, bearing witness to history in the early twentieth century as she recalls it. She draws us into her world as a young girl of mixed ethnicity, with a mother whose Eskimo family had resided on the Seward Peninsula for generations and a father of German heritage. Growing up in and near the tiny village of Teller on the Bering Strait, Elizabeth at the age of six, despite a harrowing, long midwinter sled ride to rescue her, lost both her legs to frostbite when her grandparents, with whom she was spending the winter in their traditional Eskimo home, died in the 1918 influenza epidemic. Fitted with artificial legs financed by an eastern benefactor, Elizabeth kept journals of her struggles, triumphs, and adventures, recording her impressions of the changing world around her and experiences with the motley characters she met. These included Roald Amundsen, whose dirigible landed in Teller after crossing the Arctic Circle; the ill-fated 1921 British colonists of Wrangel Island in the Arctic; trading ship captains and crews; prospectors; doomed aviators; and native reindeer herders. Elizabeth moved on to boarding school, marriage, and the state of Washington, where she compiled her records into this memoir and where, at age ninety-two, she now lives."--Publisher's description

Abstract: "Providing remarkable insights into Australian Aboriginal society through the vantage point of women, Aboriginal Woman Sacred and Profane illustrates the importance of the study of gender in anthropology. Phyllis Kaberry was the first anthropologist to examine and understand the fullness of Aboriginal women's lives, which had hitherto been classified as restricted and uninvolved with religious practice. She portrayed the Aboriginal woman in a realistic light, as a complex social personality with her own prerogatives, duties, problems, beliefs, rituals and points of view." "In her new preface, Sandy Toussaint looks at how Aboriginal Woman Sacred and Profane came to be written, the book's original context and its influence on the study of gender in anthropology."--Jacket

Abstract: The Day of the Dead -- Oaxaca and its people -- Funerals and death -- The Day of the Dead markets -- Preparation -- November first : a private affair -- November second : Panteones and public festivities -- The roots of the Day of the Dead -- The future of the Day of the Dead
Abstract: The Day of the Dead is the most important annual celebration in Oaxaca, Mexico. Skillfully combining textual information and photographic imagery, this book begins with a discussion of the people of Oaxaca, their way of life, and their way of looking at the world. It then takes the reader through the celebration from the preparations that can begin months in advance through to the private gatherings in homes and finally to the cemetery where the villagers celebrate together - both the living and the dead. The voices in the book are of those people who have participated in the Day of the Dead

Casting a broad look across a variety of institutions, from missionary societies to guilds, from lawcourts to academics, and exploring institutions across western Europe and Britain, the volume as a whole invites a newly comparative understanding of the nature of formal institutions in the period. By envisaging disparate institutions as having, to some degree, similar self-perceptions, strategies, and rituals, these essays begin to build up a picture of how early modern institutions functioned overall. The book will appeal to anyone interested in the social and cultural history of early modern communities, as well as offering insights into the relationship of institutions and the developing state."--Jacket

Abstract: In this delicious book, noted food scholar Carole M. Counihan presents a compelling and artfully told narrative about family and food in late 20th-century Florence. Based on solid research, Counihan examines how family, and especially gender have changed in Florence since the end of World War II to the present, giving us a portrait of the changing nature of modern life as exemplified through food and foodways

Abstract: In this comprehensive and provocative study of maternal reactions to child death in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa, anthropologist Jónína Einarsdóttir challenges the assumption that mothers in high-poverty societies will neglect their children and fail to mourn their deaths as a survival strategy. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted from 1993 to 1998 among the matrilineal Papel, who reside in the Biombo region, this work includes theoretical discussion of reproductive practices, conceptions of children, childcare customs, interpretations of diseases and death, and infanticide. Einarsdóttir also brings compelling narratives of life experiences and reflections of Papel women.--Publisher description

Abstract: On the anthropologist and her subject -- Japan and the Ama -- Kuzaki : making place and identity -- Organizing the village : Dōkyūsei, the Kumi-ai, and the Nifune Festival -- Keeping the Ie afloat, part 1 : diving and women's rituals -- Keeping the Ie afloat, part 2 : fishing, tourism, and New Year's rituals -- Elders and ancestors : making and becoming -- Ritual, gender, and identity.
Abstract: Through her detailed description of a particular place (Kuzaki-cho) at a particular moment in time (the 1980s), D. P. Martinez addresses a variety of issues currently at the fore in the anthropology of Japan: the construction of identity, both for a place and its people; the importance of ritual in a country that describes itself as nonreligious; and the relationship between men and women in a society where gender divisions are still very much in place. Kuzaki is, for the anthropologist, both a microcosm of modernity and an attempt to bring the past into the present. But it must also be understood as a place all of its own. In the 1980s it was one of the few villages where female divers (ama) still collected abalone and other shellfish and where some of its inhabitants continued to make a living as fishermen. Kuzaki was also a kambe, or sacred guild, of Ise Shrine, the most important Shinto shrine in modern Japan--home to Amaterasu, the sun goddess. Kuzaki's rituals affirmed a national identity in an era when attitudes to modernity and Japaneseness were being challenged by globalization. Martinez enhances her fascinating ethnographic description of a single diving village with a critique of the way in which the anthropology of Japan has developed. The result is a sophisticated investigation by a senior scholar of Japanese studies that, while firmly grounded in empirical data, calls on anthropological theory to construct another means of understanding Japan--both as a society in which the collective is important and as a place where individual ambitions and desires can be expressed

Abstract: The Orang Suku Laut consider themselves indigenous Malays. Yet their interaction with others who call themselves Malays is characterised on both sides by fear of harmful magic and witchcraft. The nomadic Orang Suku Laut believe that the Qur'an contains elements of black magic, while the settled Malays consider the nomads dangerous, dirty and backward. At the centre of this study, based on first-hand anthropological data, is the symbolism of money and the powerful influence it has on social relationships within the Riau archipelago. Abstract: "Exploring the complex issues of class and gender relations, community-building, and sport reform, For the Love of the Game analyses how local culture shapes the meanings of sport and examines the tensions created when athletes and sports teams become important symbols for the community. Focusing on civic holiday celebrations, the establishment of organized clubs for cricket, baseball, and lacrosse, and the rise of spirited urban sports rivalries, Bouchier shows that small towns did much more than mimic the sporting life of Canada's major urban centres."--BOOK JACKET

Abstract: "In this probing new study, David Luft recovers the work of three writers: Otto Weininger, Robert Musil, and Heimito von Doderer. His account emphasizes the distinctive world of liberal Vienna, especially the impact of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, in this highly scientific intellectual milieu." "According to Luft, Otto Weininger viewed human beings as bisexual and applied this theme to issues of creativity and morality. Robert Musil developed a creative ethics that was closely related to his open, flexible view of sexuality and gender. And Heimito von Doderer portrayed his own sexual obsessions as a way of understanding the power of total ideologies, including his own attraction to National Socialism. For Luft, the significance of these three writers lies in their understandings of eros and inwardness and in the roles that both play in ethical experience and the formation of meaningful relations to the world - process that continues to engage artists, writers and thinkers today." "Eros and Inwardness in Vienna will profoundly reshape our understanding of Vienna's intellectual history. It will be important for anyone interested in Austrian or German history, literature, or philosophy."--Jacket

Abstract: The idea of a family level society assumes moving, breathing form in Families of the Forest. According to Allen Johnson's ethnography, the Matsigenka people of southeastern Peru cannot be understood or appreciated except as a family level society; the family level of sociocultural integration is for them a lived reality

Abstract: In her twenties, journalist Sarah Macdonald backpacked around India and came away with a lasting impression of heat, pollution and poverty. So when an airport beggar read her palm and told her she would return to India--and for love--she screamed, "Never!" and gave the country, and him, the finger. But eleven years later, the prophecy comes true. When the love of Sarah's life is posted to India, she quits her dream job to move to the most polluted city on earth, New Delhi. For Sarah this seems like the ultimate sacrifice for love, and it almost kills her, literally. Just settled, she falls dangerously ill with double pneumonia, an experience that compels her to face some serious questions about her own fragile mortality and inner spiritual void. "I must find peace in the only place possible in India," she concludes. "Within." Thus begins her journey of discovery through India in search of the meaning of life and death. Holy Cow is Macdonald's often hilarious chronicle of her adventures in a land of chaos and contradiction, of encounters with Hinduism, Islam and Jainism, Sufis, Sikhs, Parsis and Christians and a kaleidoscope of yogis, swamis and Bollywood stars. From spiritual retreats and crumbling nirvanas to war zones and New Delhi nightclubs, it is a journey that only a woman on a mission to save her soul, her love life--and her sanity--can survive

Abstract: "Drawing from diaries, family correspondence, and other archival sources, Family Life and Sociability in Upper and Lower Canada, 1780-1870 is an intimate look at everyday life, relationships, and community in early Canada. Noel illuminates the lives of anglophone and francophone couples of different religious backgrounds during courtships and marriage, childbirth and the parent-child relationship, aging and death. From Jewish merchant Abraham Joseph and his extended family in Quebec city, to patriote Amedee Papineau and his new wife Mary Wescott in Montreal, to Chatham lawyer William Douglas's unorthodox meeting with Jane Hudson and their courtship by correspondence, this book highlights the rituals, celebrations, kinship, and community at large that influenced family dynamics, giving us a much better understanding of nineteenth-century family life in the Canadas."--Jacket

Abstract: Showing that religion is shaped to some extent by the ordinary events of everyday life, this text focuses on the 'neighbourhood' of the Galilee, bringing to life the riddles parables and folktales passed down in Rabbinic stories from the first half of the first millennium of the Common Era

    Abstract: Annotation
Abstract: In March 1929 a questionnaire was distributed among University of Missouri students to measure their attitudes toward marriage. Students were instructed to answer the questions as best they could, then drop their responses into any campus mailbox for delivery to the Bureau of Personnel Research. Rumors of Indiscretion explores how a college senior's psychology class project, a seemingly innocuous questionnaire, could cause a statewide uproar that attracted national attention. The questionnaire, quickly brought to the notice of the University of Missouri's dean of women, soon found its way into the university president's office, the local media, and even the Missouri legislature. Many people, never having read the questionnaire, were forced to rely on rumors or excerpts in the newspapers about what it actually contained. Yet, a cry arose for the expulsion of the students and professors responsible for this, as one headline labeled it, "filthy questionnaire." The controversy surrounding the questionnaire drew, lines between young and old, with the rising generation challenging the Victorian ideas of those who were frightened by this coming of age of America during the Jazz Age. Nelson brings out the historical significance of this episode by placing it into two contexts: the history of the University of Missouri and the "culture war" in America during the 1920s. He argues that the 1920s were a time of continuity as well as change in Missouri and the United States. What was actually lost was Victorianism and its mandate for an orderly culture in which each member had a sharply defined role, violations of which carried societal consequences. The youth of this time rebelled against theconstraints of such a society. Many sought change, but few were what would later be called radicals. Nelson uses the University of Missouri episode to demonstrate that while Victorianism's unrealistic notions were lost, tradition

Abstract: What are the limits of national belonging? Focusing on Biak, a set of islands off the coast of western New Guinea, in the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya, Danilyn Rutherford's analysis calls for a rethinking of the nature of national identity. With the resurgence of separatism in the province, Irian Jaya has become the focus of fears that the Indonesian nation is falling apart. Yet in the early 1990s, the fieldwork for this book was made possible by the government's belief that Biaks were finally beginning to see themselves as Indonesians. Taking in the dynamics of Biak social life and the islands' long history of millennial unrest, Rutherford shows how practices that indicated Biaks' submission to national authority actually reproduced antinational understandings of space, time, and self. Approaching the foreign as a focus of longing in cultural arenas ranging from kinship to Christianity, Biaks participated in Indonesian national institutions without accepting the identities they promoted
Abstract: Their remarkable response to the Indonesian government (and earlier polities laying claim to western New Guinea) suggests the limits of national identity and modernity, writ large. This is one of the few books reporting on the volatile province of Irian Jaya. It offers a new way of thinking about the nation and its limits, one that moves beyond the conventions of both scholarship and recent journalism. It shows how people can "belong" to a nation yet maintain commitments that fall both short of and beyond the nation state
