Abstract: The European Axis policy remains largely unwritten. Little is known about the factors that united or divided the Fascist regime and the Nazi Reich regarding the post-war order. Furthermore, even less is known about the Italian plans for a fascist Europe, which wartime events soon relegated to the margins of Axis policy. This book reconstructs the debate on the new European order developed from the 1930s to the spring of 1943 by Fascist politicians, philosophers, writers, anthropologists, and geographers. The debate progressed alongside the evolution of the international framework and in parallel with the war. The diachronic examination of these projects, where distinctive elements of Fascist ideology were instrumentally entwined with Latin and Catholic tradition, allows us to recover the thread of relations between Italy and Germany and between Italy and the minor allies of the Axis. The very choice of words - Fascist Europe, Axis Europe, Catholic Europe or Europe of Nations - reflects a shift in the balance of power: from collaboration to competition, from fear to an attempt to regain prominence. In 1943, the idea of a Europe of nations with an explicitly anti-German intent was the final, unrealistic assertion toward a new order where Axis Europe was not just Nazi Europe

Abstract: The promotion of greater diversity in the socio-demographic profile of the teaching population is the subject of an increasing international interest. However, the perspective of teachers with disabilities/specific learning disorders (SLDs) is still poorly investigated, especially in Italy. The entry of teachers with disabilities/SLDs into the teaching profession can represent a decisive step towards the development of increasingly higher levels of inclusion both in teacher training and in the school setting, also considering the benefits that teachers with disabilities/SLDs can bring in terms of inclusive values and practices. Although, the topic raises some dilemmas and tensions, elicited by the dual mandate of schools and universities, which are called to ensure the quality of: a) the educational offer; b) the professional profile of (student) teachers who (will) work in schools. At the same time, they need to grant (student) teachers the right to use accommodations during their educational and professional career. The volume presents a multi-perspective reflection on the subject, presenting ‒ in particular ‒ two systematic reviews on international research on the topic and an empirical study conducted within the Italian context. The latter investigated the facets underlying the inclusion of (student) teachers with disabilities/SLDs through a multi-method approach

Abstract: This book originated from the need to review the results and methods of empirical research on reading aloud, and it proposes the translation into Italian of five studies conducted in different parts of the world. The studies were chosen to be representative of different orientations and survey methods, as well as prestigious international peer-reviewed journals with open access. The aim, well-illustrated in the introductory essay by Federico Batini, is to encourage teachers, scholars and decision-makers in our country to attribute a fundamental role to the teaching of reading aloud throughout the entire education path. This should apply not only to children, on whom educational actions and research activities have already tried to focus for several decades. The future of reading aloud, if observed from the particular point of view of international research, seems to promise an intensification of surveys and a broadening of the field of educational application to school age in response to a greater awareness of the effects of reading exposure

Abstract: Starting from an analysis around the relationship between individual, training and self-realization, the book is focused on the pedagogical dimension of work within organizations and on the methodological tools that training should offer to face the future. In particular, the first part reflects on the importance of training within working contexts, with particular attention to the strategic role of the development of human resources and the importance to recognize individuals’ peculiarities and abilities. The second part is focused on the methodological tools of training that can be used to orient towards new future perspectives and to develop professional and personal skills. This book is aimed at HR trainers, HR consults and managers

Abstract: The persistence of a separation in work roles and tasks between men and women, which reproduces the partition between the private sphere, linked to the feminine, and the public sphere, unbalanced on the masculine, is particularly evident in the social, health and educational professions even in the most economically advanced countries, regardless of the welfare structures. Starting from the unequivocal evidence of the numerical prevalence of women in social work - a feature common to all the different conjugations in which the profession is expressed from State to State - the authors discuss the issue of gender in social work from different angles, offering the reader a rich plurality of themes, theoretical concepts and research approaches. National and international researches show the persistence of cultural matrices and gender stereotypes with regard to the division of labour, noticeable already during training, in the mentality of students and trainers, and often also in professionals themselves. The critical reflections of the authors are oriented towards the search for an antidote to the permanence of the status quo, and at the same time towards the development of an advanced mode of social intervention and gender-aware attention, both among professionals and with users and clients of the services. These research paths are offered as a contribution towards developments of a different kind in the multiple fronts of training (university education and lifelong learning), collective and mass media narration, research and reflexivity produced by the professional community of social workers themselves

Abstract: Technology has radically changed the way we learn and work, and this fact opens new paths to explore and investigate. Some questions that guide us in this search are: What is the relationship between training, new technologies and work? What is the role of organizations in making workers learn and in supporting them to face the transformations? Starting from a theoretical and epistemological analysis of the relationship between training, technology and work, the book is focused on the description of the role of training in front of currently contests and on examination of some new methodological tools to develop learning and skills, as e-service-learning and design thinking. This book is aimed at HR trainers, HR consults and managers

Abstract: The second volume dedicated to the 42nd International Conference of the Unione Italiana per il Disegno takes up the theme of 'Connecting' in reflecting on the topic Drawing: Languages, Distances, Technologies, also suggested by the remote condition that made it impossible for us to meet physically, and prompted and relaunched the conference itself. Languages, distances, technologies lead us to constantly review the dynamics that regulate the connections with drawing, and the historical and social context that in the last year and a half has characterized it. Drawing and visual Languages seen in the light of the multiple articulations that derive from them. Like a metaphor for language, drawing alludes, illudes, reveals and deceives. Drawing and Distances brings us to the practices of surveying, but also to the meaning of the word distancing, with all that it implies, to help us overcome the insurmountable physical separateness. Drawing and Technologies leads to the evidence of the digital world, viewed in its implications with the different sciences, transforming the computer from an instrument of calculation into an expressive source of communication, even artistic, for the development of a new digital aesthetic. In this volume, disciplines are intertwined, and even research sectors: a perfect path of contamination in which very different competencies come into play. And thus these three words, 'languages', 'distances', 'technologies', create a perfect circle that, rotating around drawing in a synchronous and often overlapping way, resumes and relaunches connections for creating new and ancient drawings

Abstract: In the last two decades, the topic of evaluation of the quality of educational systems has become central in the national and international arena. Evaluation is seen as a tool to verify the effectiveness and sustainability of the systems with the aim of improvement. In the Italian context, inclusion is a key principle of the school system, at all levels of education and encompasses various factors: from nursery school to university, from classroom teaching to school organisation and policies. For this reason, the evaluation of the school system cannot be separated from that of inclusive education. This book presents an overview of current evaluation systems and the state of implementation and research on school inclusion. The analysis highlights the multiple interconnections between the general evaluation of the school system and the evaluation of school inclusion, and aims to unify them through a new and original ecological approach that promotes a recursive and generative link between practice, research and evaluation. The book is addressed to researchers working in the field of educational evaluation and school inclusion, as well as teachers, principals and other education professionals who seek a collaborative, participatory and transformative evaluation system

Abstract: From an educational-historical point of view this book analyses the cultural models that underlie the conception and organisation of secondary teacher education and the professionalisation of future secondary school teachers in Europe. These models, based on different conceptions of school, citizenship and the teaching profession, have an enormous influence on school policy. Taking the examples of Italy and Germany, the complex history of teacher education is reconstructed and analysed. The articles deal, in a long-term perspective, with the emergence of national models of teacher education at the end of the 18th century, their consolidation in the 19th and 20th centuries and their transnational transformations between past and present

Abstract: In the rich Western societies, the several crises at the beginning of this century focus on the worsening of old economic and social problems, which have taken on new importance in the cities undergoing a rapid transformation because of the globalization and the new structures of the labor market. These are issues that have called into question the traditional political systems, with significant effects on the evolution of democratic systems. These issues have been raised throughout the 20th century and today they are once again central to the structural transformations aforementioned and to the crisis of the welfare systems built in Europe during the so-called Golden Age. The theme of living in the peripheries reappears in a dramatic way; a problem exacerbated by the fact that today these areas are no longer just those outside the cities (shaped by the processes of the economic modernization of the 19th and 20th centuries) but they deeply characterize the urban fabric and are linked to the existential conditions of those who live there. The book combines historical and geographical perspectives, according to an interdisciplinary approach. It is possible to examine the policies adopted and to be adopted in these territories and the role that social forces and associative networks have played and can play in identifying adequate and durable responses to such complex problems. A long-term view and a more systemic analysis allow a reflection on the relationship between socio-economic development and the processes of construction of the living together in the different contexts of European cities. Social actors, in their various forms, have offered and are able to offer strategic contributions for the production of new development models, in which the quality of life in working-class peripheries and the processes of social inclusion will be once again a priority, as required by the urban agendas of this new millennium

Abstract: Starting from the end of the Middle Ages and throughout the early modern era, there was a vast diffusion of the letter form, developed in the chancelleries of European courts and among elites according to canons that blended the rhetoric and chancery tradition with humanistic knowledge. The epistolary style suits the transmission of information and political decisions as well as a frequent exchange of everyday life news, revealing, at both public and private levels, a web of interpersonal relationships and, along with it, evidence of feelings that create ‘emotional communities’ to which, in many of the cases examined here, individuals looking for social recognition belong

Abstract: Reading aloud represents one of the most effective practices for cognitive democracy that schools can adopt to guarantee academic success for all children and youth. With the multi-year project “Reading: So Cool!”, the Region of Tuscany wanted to introduce reading aloud in early childhood education services and schools in a systematic and structured way. The aim was to promote reading aloud as a regular and daily practice for the entire education system in Tuscany to reduce, over time, school dropout and learning inequalities. Starting from experience in the field, this book recounts, documents and explains the intentions, actions and results of the first year of activity in this project. It shares the theoretical foundations, practices, evidence collected and results achieved without forgetting the difficulties and a critical assessment. The dissemination of this experience is important and allows the promotion and replication – including outside the Tuscan region – the aims and tools of what has become, over time, a real educational policy that is able to encourage the achievement of core skills not only at school, but for life

Abstract: School is where children and youth spend most of their time, where they learn, socialise and grow. However, multiple pieces of evidences tell us that school is not always a safe ‘place’ for everyone. This book explores the phenomenon of school bullying, focusing in particular on homophobic bullying, and has been developed from the results of regional research conducted in secondary schools in the Region of Umbria and extends to the national and international background, with a reflexive-interpretative approach to the data on the occurrence of the phenomenon, best practices and guidelines. Bullying is an educational problem − of inclusion, equity and safety − that is relevant for every parent, teacher, headmaster and political executive at the systemic level. From this perspective, the book combines empirical research, theoretical reflection and didactic contextualisation, drawing attention to the need for appropriate gender and civil rights education as a prerequisite for preventing and combating bullying and every form of discrimination

Abstract: This open access book explores the translation of children’s and Young Adult literature from a gendered perspective. By combining Translation Studies, Literary and Gender Studies, it provides original interdisciplinary analyses on a variety of literary and non-literary texts for children’s and Young Adults, translated from French, English and Spanish into Italian. It sheds new light on a research area that has so far been little investigated at international level, and especially in the Italian academic context. The book also includes a document inspired by the “Polite Code” which aims to help publishers and translators to promote inclusion, respect diversities, and adopt a gender-sensitive approach when publishing and translating for young readers. The book is the result of an AlmaIdea research project, funded by the University of Bologna

Abstract: On the tenth anniversary from the death of Professor Cesare Scurati, this volume revamps research and reflection on the conceptual, methodological, and operational contribution that this scholar has offered to education at many levels, from childhood to schooling, from life-wide education to the style and ethics of being an intellectual and a teacher. The richness of the pedagogical fresco accomplished by Scurati pertains to the liveliness of a cultural season – the second half of the Twentieth century –, in which educational ideologies and epistemological fences were overcome. Despite all its contradictions and limitations, in this era Scurati achieved productive and humanistic interpretations of education and schooling. In his studies, Scurati effectively tried to improve the situation of several educational ecosystems, intertwining academic reflection and professional training, educational research, analysis of concrete institutional practices, and inspiration from abroad, especially the Anglo-Saxon world. The volume is composed by three sections: the first, Readings, offers some interpretations on the work of Cesare Scurati; the second, Paths, looks deeply on his inquiry on school systems, especially in the curricular perspective and with regards to children education; the third, Environments, gathers contributions on the multiple contexts of the so called life-wide education. The volume, therefore, proposes a non-anecdotal memory of a master, still capable of sparking interests, and promote ideals for the progress of the world

The methodological proposals are organised in three sections: Gaining and Developing Attention, Creating Interest in Stories and Encouraging Participation and Book Culture. The research took into account hundreds of suggestions formulated by scholars, educators and teachers who are experts in reading aloud, as well as by a group of researchers. It explored the specialised bibliography and websites dedicated to reading aloud and involved, through interviews, educators and teachers of nursery schools and preschools from the 35 Education Zones of the Region of Tuscany. The aim is to promote, in all children and youth, the development of the basic skills needed to achieve academic success of each and every one

Abstract: The pandemic crisis has made increasingly relevant and urgent to reflect on the way our cities are organised, on an intra-urban scale. The book aims to bring to the reader's attention the theme of urban neighbourhoods, approaching it from a sociological point of view. The first two chapters outline the theoretical and analytical framework of the neighbourhood approach, contextualising social capital in a differentiated urban dimension within it and recognising the specificity of places and territories in which collective life is organised. In the central chapters, declined in more applicative terms, the reflection focuses on spatialisation of public housing and social mix in the city of Bologna; on residential practices and strategies in the Scampia district (Naples), from which the dynamics of an informal real estate market of social rents emerge. The book continues with an action-research on neighbourhood effect and equity in the right to health within the urban context of Bologna. The final chapter is dedicated to the sustainable city and the importance of neighbourhoods in facing the global challenge of climate change

Abstract: Bramante’s skill in controlling the creation of a seamlessly conceived space shows how architecture can exploit its representative capacity of internal perspectives, considered architecture integration. The key adopted to reach this result is the “architectura picta” of the built space. It adopts built space combined with small apparatuses to conceal the critical points in which the continuity between real and virtual space is resolved. The multiplication of centers amplifies the effectiveness of the perspective, making it convincing from several points of view, even for a moving observer. The implicit perceptual effect overcomes the geometric correctness, which was neglected to enhance its effectiveness as a tool for creating a global and augmented art “ante litteram”. The research published in this volume documents, through a small number of selected cases studies, the unsuspected development in Lombardy in applying perspective decoration to architecture, understood in the broadest sense as the art of constructing artificial space. This latter consists of controlling the instruments of representation to improve perceptive involvement and visual communication. It underlines the continuity of Milanese perspective with the immersive spaces of augmented reality offered today by digital technology

Abstract: The volume is the result of a one-year project of research and fieldwork. It is the outcome of the “European funds – a Sustainable Future for Umbria" (ESFU) project, co-financed by the European Commission with the "Support for information measures relating to the EU Cohesion policy” program. Communicating European Union opportunities are essential for the effectiveness of cohesion policy, which aims to promote and support the overall harmonious development of its Member States and regions. However, it is a difficult task when the advantages that want to be reached are so clear. Among these, the contribution of regions and local authorities together with stakeholders, beneficiaries and citizens can increase the possibility of development. While the lack of knowledge can impact the performance of cohesion policy and undermine territory opportunities (local authorities, entrepreneurs, third sector and other actors), determining a low level of participation effectively affects the impact of European regional development and the social fund. The proposal elaborated in this book tries to fill this gap, elaborating a method to facilitate the state of communication strategy at the regional level. Thanks to an interdisciplinary approach that combines knowledge from different disciplinary fields from the legal framework to communication. The volume analyses the actual scenario of the structural fund's communication in the Umbria region to put forward a final proposal to establish a Network on regional European funds, called “REFORE”. It should be a permanent mechanism for acquiring and disseminating information among potential recipients. The proposal thought for the Umbria context is replicable everywhere, shaping to a different environment

Abstract: The volume draws attention to some elements of ambiguity in the Italian Petrarchism of the 16th century, with insights also into the early 17th century. In particular, the book analyses: the debate on some contradictory or at least problematic aspects of Petrarch’s statements on love; the tension between literary artificiality and ostentation of sincerity in love letters; the ambiguity between sacred and profane in the encomiastic field, with special reference to the metaphor of the ‘temple’ in the so-called ‘temples of poems’. The path here proposed offers an idea of Petrarchism as a phenomenon less rigid and stereotyped than usually perceived. Its ambiguities or even contradictions can be subjects of debate, without necessarily taking the path of anti-petrarchism and parodic deformation

Abstract: Augmented Reality (AR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are technological domains that closely interact with space at architectural and urban scale in the broader ambits of cultural heritage and innovative design. The growing interest is perceivable in many fields of knowledge, supported by the rapid development and advancement of theory and application, software and devices, fueling a pervasive phenomenon within our daily lives. These technologies demonstrate to be best exploited when their application and other information and communication technology (ICT) advancements achieve a continuum. In particular, AR defines an alternative path to observe, analyze and communicate space and artifacts. Besides, AI opens future scenarios in data processing, redefining the relationship between man and computer. In the last few years, the AR/AI expansion and relationship have raised deep transdisciplinary speculation. The research experiences have shown many cross-relations in Architecture and Design domains. Representation studies could arise an international debate as a convergence place of multidisciplinary theoretical and applicative contributions related to architecture, city, environment, tangible and intangible Cultural Heritage. This book collects 66 papers and identify eight lines of research that may guide future developments

Abstract: Urban settlements are critical today, not only in demographic, economic and cultural terms, but also for their environmental impact. A sustainable land management is therefore a fundamental requirement. Urban sprawl has long been described as settlement model that is unsustainable from all the points of view, but its growth has been virtually unchallenged for decades. Many regions have recently become aware of the problem however, and they are trying to tackle this challenge. This book tries to focus on this challenge and it moves from the following research questions: which outcomes have been obtained against sprawl? Which difficulties emerged? Who and why is against these policies? Which are the "unwanted effects" of these policies? The book is focused on the US trends, where the problem emerged first. Portland, Denver and Minneapolis are considered: three metropolitan regions in different parts of the country but with similar dimensions, characteristics and policies. The conditions that made some outcomes possible are highlighted (the ability to network institutions at multiple levels and to foster the participation of local actors in the land management process), as well as some critical issues and unsolved problems (the exponential growth of real estate costs, the opposition of a part of the local community, the persistence of segregation and inequality forms)

Abstract: The book focuses on a well-established stream of research on disability which, both internationally and nationally, has proved fruitful in theoretical and analytical aspect, and was certainly fundamental in the process that led to the recognition of the rights of people with disabilities and the implementation of inclusive policies. The rigorous analysis present in all the chapters of the book also highlight the wide distance between the principles that guide the reflection on this issue, the policies for disability and the living conditions that people with disabilities experience daily. From the book emerges that the challenge is not merely the recognition of the rights of persons with disabilities but also making these rights enforceable. For this to be possible, both efficient and effective policies and a cultural change which recognizes disabled people "as part of human diversity and humanity" is necessary. This means placing at the center of discussion the aspirations and the empowerment of people with disabilities. The book is designed for scholars of disability, but also for social operators who work with disabled people

Abstract: The book illustrates and analyzes separately the relationships between language and gender and language and disability. By interlacing legal and linguistic approaches, the book aims at unraveling challenges and criticisms surrounding the use of the language which are likely to impair and violate the constitutional and supranational principle of equality and non-discrimination. Despite the variety of implications and the specifics of each language, the book chooses to hinge more broadly on the Italian and German languages, unified by being both examples of “gendered languages”

Abstract: Fifteenth-century Bologna is one of the major Italian cities, home to a prestigious university and thriving industrial and economic center; in these conditions, ideal for the development of the early typographic art, the market of the manuscript book, with its world of copyists, illuminators, bookbinders, stationaries, soon adapts to the new way of production, fostering between XV and XVI century the emergence of some great families of booksellers-printers-publishers. Since the first decades of the sixteenth century, however, an overwhelming foreign book production is increasingly present on bolognese market: important printers like Vincenzo Valgrisi and Gabriele Giolito establish branches in the city, while in the law book sector the Lyonese publishing industry of Giunti is gaining momentum. The situation changes again in the second half of the century, when the market is remodeled following the conditioning by the ecclesiastical authorities and it extends to social strata previously excluded from cultural consumption. The work, which is based on a detailed investigation of the documentary sources, reconstructs for the first time a social history of the Bolognese book trade, both outlining the events of families and shops operating in the city, and opening the look at the relationships with the large foreign firms

Abstract: The art of printing with movable type made its appearance in Perugia -then as now, the heart of Italy- in 1471, when the city was under the sway of Braccio Baglioni. Perugia was home to an important university which had been attracting students from all over Europe for more than a century. They found hospitality in two colleges, of which the ‘Sapienza Vecchia’, in particular, was accustomed to accommodating students from abroad. The colleges were themselves instrumental in assisting the work of the earliest printers, all of them foreigners; their enterprise flourished for about fifteen years before strong competition from larger printing centres, notably Venice, took control of the Perugian book market. A second phase in local book production started at the turn of the century under the aegis of two major players, the Cartolari family and Bianchino dal Leone. The history of the book in Perugia is characterized by a quality and originality which is not reflected in the modest quantities produced there, and the major bibliographers have always taken an interest in it. All that and more can be found in this book, the outcome of lengthy research based on detailed analysis of all known editions and archival documents, including a number of new discoveries

Abstract: The volume tells us about the close relationship between heaven and earth, between the extraordinary and the everyday, between faith and science, highlighted by the countless episodes of piety that allow us to retrace history and grasp its transformations, starting from the lived life of thousands of protagonists. In fact, the painted votive tablets prove to be an exceptional vector for reproducing and transmitting the values of the community: family, homeland, work, care for animals and the territory, use of means of transport and old and new technologies. In the ex-voto the cycles of life and seasons unfold and the impact on them of small and large natural or social disasters that recur over time with impressive regularity, unfortunately we find ourselves unprepared each time. In dealing with risks and calamities of all kinds, ex-votos women and men look upwards - with great dignity - asking them to survive, persist and replicate themselves as biological entities and cultural entities. The long sequence of events narrated in the ex-votos constitutes a sort of DNA of our nation, indispensable for shaping the country's future. Also for this reason, painted ex-votos must be detected, filed, preserved, protected, valued, studied and brought to the attention of the general public, as this volume proposes

Abstract: Historiography traditionally accepts periodization which considered the First World War as an absolute watershed in the European history as a whole. This text, through a collection of essays by Italian and foreign specialists, seeks to investigate the premises and the results of the First World War in a vast area ranging from the Balkans to the Caucasus normally underrated by historiography, focusing on a series of problems (of ethnic, cultural or political character) which due to their complexity must be faced in an overall framework that takes into account the pre-war period and the first two decades of the twentieth century. The works reveal a very complex and stimulating picture, which leads us to reflect on long-term events and problems that involved all the countries that participated to the regional events, full of consequences for the peoples who lived there
