Abstract: To become more than a mere intellectual construction, eco-territorialism requires that each science involved looks critically at its own disciplinary boundaries and explores border zones rich of fruitful contaminations, playing an aware and open part in a sort of choral music score. In this brief presentation, the editors describe the argumentative structure of the book and point out key concepts necessary in order to build a real alternative to ecological crisis and deterritorialisation

Abstract: Eco-territorialism is the mature definition of the long scientific research/action path that the Italian territorialist school started in the 1990s, putting the territory and its patrimonialisation at the centre of the alternatives to processes of deterritorialisation and homologising urbanisation of the planet enacted by the economic-financial globalisation. The founding in 2011 of the Territorialist Society has strengthened the multidisciplinary nature of the approach and its operational component with the ‘urban bioregion’ tool. The ‘eco’ prefix denotes the priority given to the ecological question, to the relationships between human and non-human, living and non-living, in the regeneration processes of the world’s places we are trying to activate

Abstract: The spread of pandemics, war and the climate crisis has shown how close the unsustainability of the current development model, oblivious of places and their inhabitants, has now come to a point of no return; but at the same time it has made more transparent – as well as more urgent – the reasons for the eco-territorialist turn, centred on the conceptual and operational device of the urban bioregion. Delving into a discussion already underway, the essay describes such a tool by declining it along three analysis and design axes: the founding role of territorial heritage, the integrated and synergic activation of all the “constructive elements” of the production of space, and the self-government of the territory as a common good

Abstract: The essay illustrates Quaini's inputs to the construction and the theoretical/operational development of the territorialist school and, later on, of the Territorialist Society, of which he was one of the major founders and guarantors. In his explication of concepts like place, territory, landscape, place awareness, Quaini anticipates the need for a multidisciplinary territorialist lexicon. Taking from Herodote Italia the focus on the fundamental integration of historical and spatial knowledge, he recommends a confluence of geography into the territorialist multidisciplinary system, exemplifying it in relation to topics like territorial museums, local observatories of landscape, statute of places, foundational description, new relationships between city and countryside

Abstract: The text supports the introduction, alongside ecosystems services, of eco-territorial services, which unlike the former depend for their very existence on human care actions. To assess them (under a monetary or other perspective) it is necessary to distinguish between the use value and the existence value of each element of the territorial heritage: such a measure can drop to zero or rise to infinity, and is strongly dependent on the culture of the subjects who use it; this also requires the degree of self-determination of their communities to be included in the assessment

Abstract: This book was born as a "work in in progress" and collects many of the public presentations of Giacomo Becattini's book "La cosicenza dei luoghi. Il territorio come soggetto corale" ("The Conscience of Places. The territory as a choral subject"), published by Donzelli in 2015. The presentations inspired great methodological passion, concrete perspectives and also criticism. In fact, the text of Becattini has raised issues of great importance on the perspectives of local development, by projecting them on the very future of human societies in a period of crisis and global uncertainty. The richness, the plurality of accents and the depth of the debate that has developed ensure that the collection lives a "life of its own" even with respect to the book of origin. Becattini's disappearance, which occurred just as the volume was being edited, leaves a huge void but stimulates even more the debate on this fresco, painted by several artists on the trace of his recent work

Abstract: In recent years, the in-depth analysis of landscape issues, the approval of the first regional Landscape Plans, the reflection on the action carried out by the Superintendencies are introducing a change of perspective in the protective action, drawing attention both to the critical aspects connected to it and to the numerous innovations emerged. This book presents the results of a research dedicated to Landscape Planning in Italy, offering a detailed state of the art, as well as some insights on the most significant initiatives. Finally, the volume proposes a methodological approach for an operational model of Landscape Planning based on a patrimonial and structural consideration of the landscape

Abstract: The territory is constantly being torn by thousands of conflicting interests and, as a common good, it is in growing need of a unitary planning, suitable for the people living, working and consuming in it: an amount of suitability including urban places, city networks, rivers, valleys, agricultural areas and coastal hinterlands. Compared to the architectural and urban project, the territorial project has much more episodic and sectoral disciplinary rules. This volume is the Tuscan outcome of a national research on the "territorial project", and provides the concept of urban bioregion as a methodology which can integrate analyses and projects on: the environmental prerequisites of the settlement, the reconfiguration of synergies between city and countryside, the polycentric rebalancing of urban systems, locally-based economic and energy systems, forms of self-government for local and self-sustainable development starting from the rules for the enhancement of the territory's heritage
