Abstract: History Teaching in the university context is a completely unexplored field of research in Italy and for a large part also in those countries that can boast more solid traditions of studies in this research area. This is caused by the shared idea that the academic context is always a guarantee of a high quality of teaching. This work reverses this thesis and therefore aims to deeply investigate the teaching and learning of History to understand its effectiveness; in other words, this means understand whether and how the university can lead students to the development of Historical Thinking, i.e. the most important of the educational objectives concerning History. Through the comparison between Italy and Spain (one of the most advanced country in this research area), the use of a large variety of sources (including specific surveys) and a wide recognition of the Didactics of History as a discipline (with reference to its most important debate on Historical Thinking), the result is a first attempt to identify and analyze the original characteristics and critical issues of History in the higher education system which focuses on the most relevant disciplinary traditions, practices and teaching tools, and also on the complex relationship of academic History with school, publishing industry and digital.

Abstract: The correspondence between Franco Fortini and Carlo Cassola covers a wide range of time, from 1955 to 1981 and focuses on three core themes: the journey to China in 1955 and the writing of two reportages on this topic; the events of 1965 and the literary fervour arisen around left-wing journals; Cassola’s poetic and literary production, enriched with Fortini’s critical notes. However, and the same time, the correspondence between Cassola and Fortini also shows the birth (and developments) of a complex relationship, characterized by friendship and reciprocal influence, that involves two among the most well-known figures of the twentieth century. The correspondence represents a unique resource for the analysis of the legacy, poetics and cultural background of the two great authors

Abstract: This volume aims to offer an effective and comprehensive summary of the data on consumption and expenditure of drugs dispensed by the Regional Health Service (SSR) of Campania region under health care agreements during the year 2019. By using information supplied by a database covering a population of about six million inhabitants, a correlation has been drawn between the prevalence of diseases in the area and the corresponding use of drugs, suggesting at the same time useful interpretations of the main factors influencing the variability in prescriptions. A thorough analysis was then conducted on the prescribing profiles of the main therapeutic categories, particularly focused on polypharmacy regimens in the over-65s, gender differences in medication use, and medication use profiles in patients with COVID-19. A detailed overview of medication use in terms of expenditure, volume and type within the region has thus been created, which aims to be a monitoring tool to support decision-makers, useful both for the planning of public health interventions, and for the identification of potential areas of improvement in these contexts

Abstract: Aperias of European integration: between humanitarian universalism and sovereignism is the result of a study and research process that involved researchers from the University of Évora and the Centro de Investigação em Ciência Política (CICP) in Portugal and scholars from the DSU of Federico II in Naples and other prestigious Italian universities. The book, divided into three sections, deals with the conflict between universalism - understood as a philosophical principle of the Western cultural tradition and as a juridical-political principle at the basis of the integration process - and the principle of sovereignty, which instead tends to preserve the political autonomy of states in the process of integration. Contributions by: Peluso, Morfino, Cacciatore, Giannini, Rocha Chuna, Boemio, Basso, Amendola, Arienzo, Tinè, Höbel Donato, D'Acunto
Abstract: The volume describes the goals, strategies and actions of ViDaCS (Violent Dad in Child’s Shoes), a project framed in the European Programme REC (Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme 2014-2020), namely project grant number 810449.Its subtitle is A Moment Before to focus on developing an innovative multi- agency protocol for the self-assessment of intimate violence by perpetrators; it addresses the EU call purpose of preventing and combating gender-based violence under the main priority of “Treatment of perpetrators”, in order to prevent reoffending.ViDaCS’ book is a collective experience presenting an ecological model explaining gender-based violence, training and intervention issues on this topic; it is an experience, in the shoes of the child witnessing domestic violence, proposing alternative “domestic scenes”where the father decides and assumes “new” behaviours that avoid violent behaviour. Moreover it present and discuss a self-assessment of emotional burden and violent behaviour based on exploratory and 4.0 CTS serious game

Abstract: An educational and interdisciplinary comparison on a territory such as Castel Volturno represents, for the students in the last year of the Master’s Program in Architecture 5UE, an important state of awareness, both from a design and professional point of view, and in the development of a particular sensitivity towards some places. The publication collects the results of the work carried out during the 2018-2019 academic year, highlighting the powerful laboratory character that the survey area required. The structure of the book reflects, in fact, the experimental work carried out, starting with the exploration of some preliminary themes and methods, examined in the section “Essays”; continuing through the study of the “transepts” and the interaction with the people who inhabit these places; finally, working on assembling and defining a “synthesis” of data and investigations through the design proposals, described in the section “Projects”. Proposals not intended as definitive outcomes and in conclusive terms, but as a set of inputs, discoveries, revelations and, therefore, continuously subjected to updating and mutation. Scenarios of new possible meanings and new transformations are, therefore, the result of this work, composed of different levels of analysis linked to the multiple layers of “sensitivity” towards the places and to the design experimentation, deepened in relation to all levels, details, aspects that are connected to it

Abstract: Notwithstanding an impressive amount of secondary literature, an exhaustive study has been never devoted to the twelve letters written by Dante Alighieri after his banishment from Florence (1302–1315). This book answers to this important need of Dante Studies, offering an important tool for the increasing community of specialists interested in Dante’s works and posterity linked to the seventh centenary of his death (2021). A section is devoted to study in depth the theory and practice of the dictamen of the age in relationship with the concrete style of Dante’s texts. A preliminary overview is provided by Latin Philologists and Paleographers on the subject of the manuscript trasmission envisaging the problems dealing with the critical editions of the texts. Example of political communication realized by a layman, the papers gathered in this volume intend to offer a new reading and interpretation of these important letters, studying them in their socio-cultural context

Abstract: The book is inspired by the reports discussed at the Conference Territorio, popolazione e risorse: strutture produttive nell’economia del mondo romano, organized in Naples, on 26 October 2018; it represents the result of a research project aimed at analysing the economic, political and social evolution of the Italic territory, mainly of Regio I, in Roman times. For this specific geographical-administrative area, we have considered aspects and problems relating to the rural landscape, the forms of production and the role of cities, through the reinterpretation of different types of evidence (primarily literary and documentary sources) on the basis of the theoretical assumption that there is a close correlation between population, resource exploitation and urbanization

Abstract: Are we made of spirit or body? Or are we a «third thing», as Nietzsche said almost 140 years ago? The question is not trivial. If, on the one hand, God’s death does not allow us to trust in the immortal soul that takes away from the torments of the flesh to be destined for final judgement, on the other hand, a mechanistic scientific vision reduces everything to the body, understood as a pure piece of matter, impoverishing our vital experience. Beyond these two moments, Nietzsche intuits a space that remains to be explored, which is both physical and moral, biological and social. This book continues and deepens a research work on Nietzsche started by Papparo over 25 years ago, first with La passione senza nome (1995), then with Qualcosa del corpo (2016), taking in analysis not only the texts of the German philosopher, but his most recent interpretations. Not only Heidegger (and the French philosophy of the second half of the twentieth century: Bataille, Deleuze or Derrida), but some “friend” thinkers: Stiegler, Masullo, Giametta, Moroncini, Mazzarella, Vitiello, Giugliano... An incessant comparison that gives this book the peculiar physiognomy of a book written on the margins of the many texts examined
Abstract: Siamo fatti di spirito o di corpo?

Abstract: Joseph Petzoldt was Ernst Mach’s and Richard Avenarius’ main pupil, as well as the primary source for the habit to reunite these two thinkers under the label of “empiriocriticists”. Petzoldt developed Mach’s and Avenarius’ ideas in a philosophical system aiming at overcoming the dualism and agnosticism of the Kantian approach that was typical of German scientific circles in the late 1800s. Petzoldt’s thought is based on three pillars: his radical empiricism, according to which sensory experience is not appearance but reality; the Eindeutigkeit principle, which states that all that happens is univocally determined and thus necessary; the principle of the tendency to stability, which governs the evolution of the universe, including the living organisms and the brain. On these bases, Petzoldt arrives at his “relativistic positivism”, according to which every individual experiences reality from his point of view, but – since knowledge processes are determined by the functioning of the brain – this does not preclude an objective knowledge of the world. Petzoldt was also one of the leading figures of the debate on the philosophical interpretation of Einstein’s relativity. He believed that relativity was a consequence and a confirmation of E. Mach gnoseological approach and thus of relativistic positivism

Abstract: “Reason” and “rationality” are, today, problematic notions: considered for a long time, in the history of Western thought, as distinctive traits of man and of the Euro-American civilization, from a certain point onwards they have been called into question and ripped apart by the crisis and the malaise of the latter. In the light of the most recent controversies and reflections on the subject developed over the first half of the 20th century, this book aims to riegnite the debate on “ratio” with the intention of highlighting – through a series of “case studies” – the fine texture of the multiple meanings and uses of the notion of reason, but also to question the different “eras” of reason by attempting to reconstruct its “history”. The essays included in this volume, therefore, contextualise and analyse the meanings and ambiguities of the term “ratio” and its derivatives within the framework of the many discussions that have marked its history from the earliest modernity, when the concept assumed new configurations with respect to the uses attested in Ancient and Medieval thought, to the contemporary debate

Abstract: Florus’ work has always been regarded as a summary of Livy’s broader narrative, reorganized around a “biological” conception of history to become more effective. The design of his historical account, however, is the result of a series of strategies outlined by the author himself in his praefatio. There Florus reveals his methodology to the reader by declaring that he intends to operate like “those who paint the regions of the earth.” My analysis of this work shows that Florus sacrifices the accuracy of historical information in order to present the Roman history from the origins to the Augustan age as a coherent trajectory that justifies the Empire. On the one hand, this path is made “visible” through the use of an “evolutionary” narrative pattern, characterized by the transition between different aetates; on the other hand, it can be defined as “geographical,” for it mirrors the Roman imperialistic expansion. The only break in this linear narrative is the account of the civil wars from the age of the Gracchi onward, recounted all together in Book 2 for the sake of clarity. In this case Florus employs a new strategy, that shatters the chronological arrangement of the material to privilege the discussion of agonizing ethical considerations. This monograph also examines the stylistic choices adopted by Florus throughout his narrative. The use of the metaphor and the direct intervention of the author, who comments on particular events or characters, inserting questions and interjections, create an original synthesis of history and rhetoric that aims at gaining the reader’s approval. Florus’ resorting to techniques commonly employed in declamations speaks to the artistic value of his work

Abstract: The Milites Baroli censused in the Catalogus Baronum constitute the beginning of this study on the formation, characteristics and evolution about lordship powers in the Ofanto Valley and particularly in the city of Barletta between the Norman and early Angevin age. Through a focused and complex rereading of the existing documents, the volume analyzes the structure of the Barletta society with particular attention to its military and political élite and to the relationship with central power. Structured during the XII century consequently the intervention of the Norman crown, for the southern sovereigns the milites of Barletta organized and controlled the Ofanto Valley, favoring the unification of the Apulian center with civitas and the bishopric of Canne. Strongly put to the test in the secular relationship with the crown, the élite of the Apulian city is here probed through the study of prosopographic profiles and the pervasiveness of the power used by main local military families. In this point of view, is analyzed both the relationship established from time to time with the ecclesiastical foundations of Outremer and with the Holy Land, and the quality of the intervention in the main places of political and religious power and the characteristics of supremacy. In that sense, particular attention is focused on the dynamics of the conflict, hidden in the city society, as a basic element for understanding the inner workings of power in the local and supralocal context. In this way, the volume is part of the debate on the social and political structure of the cities in the south of Italy and on the aristocratic powers in the Kingdom of Sicily, of which Barletta is a complex and very interesting case

Abstract: Within the vast Ovidian bibliography, taking the opportunity provided by the celebrations of the Bimillenary of the poet's death (17-2017), the volume aims at offering a useful tool to deepen, in a diachronic and synchronic perspective, not only the multifarious virtues of Ovid's poetry, his extraordinary Alexandrian ars, the stages of his Reception starting from antiquity, but also - if not above all - an undisputed and in some ways unreachable quality of the Ovidian language and style: the disruptive icastic strength, the ability to employ, like few others, the images in the construction of the poetic text, of its narrative plots, of its elegant refinement, of its effectiveness in the reader’s Reception. The versatility of Ovid's poetry, the transversality of its readings and of its possible reuse throughout the history of western culture are confirmed by the coexistence, within the volume, of contributions ranging from classical to modern and contemporary literatures, from archeology to Art history, from philosophy to music

Abstract: This volume collects the contributions that scholars of the widest extraction, Italian and foreign, have dedicated to a fundamental theme for our times. The “culture”-object, a central theme of Cassirer's philosophy as well, is read, analyzed and proposed as a problematic node, but full of fruitful and current ideas, from multiple theoretical perspectives and diversified disciplinary fields

Abstract: Another step of the Trotula Project created by the University Federico II’s Equal Opportunity Committee: In December 2019, the National Congress brought together the University Equal Opportunity Committees from all over Italy. Now we are publishing the Transcripts in a period of the COVID-19 emergency, during which Diversity has appeared as a crucial theme. We know it is just a little step on a long path, but we are happy to introduce many significant, sensitive and passionate voices of a mindful Community that dialogues with its territory on culture of differences today and while thinking to the future

Abstract: "Administering the foreigner" is the title of a large research program of whom this volume is part. The chapters use a wide range of sources, and offer a sort of survey of the available documentation; for example: ancient regime censuses, matrimonial acts, traveler memoirs, registers of guest-houses and other reception centers, passports and other registration and travel documents, such as laissez passer, safe conducts, security and verification cards. In this long-lasting perspective, the theme of mobility highlights the relationships, tensions and negotiations between individuals, communities and state and local powers, around the issues of identifying people and ensuring the coexistence between different cultures and religions

Abstract: This volume has the same title of the one published in 2011. It collects a series of studies on the long reign of the second Trastàmara King of Naples, Ferdinand of Aragon (1458-1494), using mainly the great mass of information offered by diplomatic correspondences. The authors study some key events and protagonists of Italian history in the Quattrocento (the battle of Ponza, the condottiero Giacomo Piccinino, the journey of Lorenzo de’ Medici to Naples, the war of Ferrara) and important topics about politics and political communication: the relations between the Crown, the society and the fiscal institutions; the use of italian language in the autograph letters written by Lluís Dezpuig, a catalan; the “queenship” of the duchess of Ferrara

Abstract: Che cos’è un’immagine?

Abstract: The general purpose of military paperwork in the Roman army was to control and to manage the personnel, giving detailed information about compositions of the unit, status and availability of the soldiers for duty tasks, their salaries and expenses. The needs of the service called for documents highly readable that, in their form and content, show a good degree of uniformity over time and space. Although some scholars have discussed the various typologies of documents and have reconstructed the branches of military bureaucracy, until now the topic is still a field open for study. 0The volume by Ornella Salati aims to address the question of documents? composition in the Roman army during the first three centuries AD, analysing Latin papyri from Egypt. Particular attention is paid firstly to their layout, visual details (format of columns, blank spaces) and handwriting (capital and/or cursive); secondly their pattern, content and language (specific sentences, formulae) are discussed. Comparative evidence from other military contexts (Vindolanda in northern England, Dura Europos in southern-eastern Syria, Gholaia in north Africa) are also taken into account. Possible connections with time and space, and even with the material support are explored in order to show similarities and differences. Such comprehensive approach consents to obtain a deeper knowledge of the organization of the Roman army and of the system of writing, authentication and archiving its documents

Abstract: This work provides an in-depth description of the juridical framework in which the Italian book trade operated during the Renaissance. It is a multi-authored work that discusses issues related to intellectual, literary and artistic proto-property by taking into account some of the main urban centers of pre-unitary Italy such as Venice, Milan and Rome. It investigates the different legal systems put in place by the states and the dynamics that generated around them. The volume frames the topic at task within the general discourse on technologic innovation and state patronage in economic history hence exploring patenting systems (e.g., Florence and Venice) along with book privilege systems (e.g., Milan and Venice). In so doing it also investigates instances of conflicting interests occuring between the political and the economic sphere (e.g., Rome and Venice)

Abstract: This volume deals with the problem of the reception of elitism in the United States in the period between 1920 and 1956, identifying the protagonists, the phases, and the themes that characterized it. After introducing the fundamental principles of the theory of the elites, the first part of the study reconstructs the debate that it aroused beyond the Atlantic. The second part examines the original American reworking of the elitist lesson, concentrating the analysis on the works of the authors most strongly influenced by it: Joseph A. Schumpeter, Harold D. Lasswell, Charles W. Mills. In this way, the study aims to show how Italian elitism contributed in a meaningful way to the elaboration of democratic pluralism and the construction of American political-cultural hegemony in the second post-war period

Abstract: According to the European Landscape Convention, signed in Florence on 20 October 2000, the landscape is the outcome of the relationship between local communities and their territories, as a result of the social culture that collective behaviors substantiate to build identities. Aware that everyone has an active role in shaping landscapes, the volume addresses some key aspects of the theme with a specialized but transversal approach. It is paired by the reflections of schoolteachers, who have implemented initiatives with students of Campania schools aimed at bringing them closer to their territories and to make them aware of the active role they have in its transformation. The origin of this symbiosis is the Training Project “Landscape from everyone – Landscape for everyone. Training and education for the awareness of new generations” developed and implemented by the local group of the University of Naples Federico II of the UNISCAPE (European Network of Universities for the Implementation of the European Landscape Convention) Association and the Regional School Office of Campania

Abstract: The railway from Naples to Nocera with a side branch to Castellammare, whose project was approved in 1836 and which was completed in 1844, represents the first and the most significant stage of the construction of the Bourbon railway infrastructure. The absolute novelty of the enterprise, a work of public utility entrusted in concession to the French engineer Armand Bayard de la Vingtrie, led to the development of new and pressing issues, which concern not only the physical dimension of the Vesuvian coast and its new structure, but also important matters of economy, law, administration, archaeological protection, as well as infrastructure and territory promotion issues. The volume, through the research and comparison of different archival and documentary sources, is intended to reread the history of the first Bourbon railway by bringing together the many aspects that characterized its design, construction and use up to the Unification of Italy. From this study emerges a perspective on the Vesuvian landscape and on its multiple and complex components, integrated in the new perception, intermittent and cursory, offered by the moving train

Abstract: “The drug: research, development and application in therapy” is an in-depth study on the Research and Development process that a drug performs from the moment it is designed up to its practical use. When a molecule is considered suitable for a medicine, a long process is activated which has as its goal the creation of a new therapeutic tool and its approval for marketing. A path marked by the strict observance of regulations and laws that have evolved over time in step with scientific and technological progress. A path that however has often been determined also by tragic events following damaging adverse reactions that have triggered processes of revision of the norms and experimental protocols. This book starts with a summary on the history of Western pharmacology, written to allow the reader to understand the circumstances that have been the background to those dynamics through which the Research and Development process has gradually consolidated. An important part of the book is dedicated to some aspects that are crucial in the normative universe in which the drug is placed, such as the advanced therapies and new approaches for clinical research. The authors also focused on the prescriptions of off-label drugs and on the issues of pharmacoutilization and pharmacovigilance, two disciplines that, in a few years, have become increasingly influential in the present and future perspectives, not only of the pharmaceutical sciences but of the entire society

Abstract: Divided into three sections: the existential analytics between neokantism, phenomenology and hermeneutics; ethics, praxis, politics starting from Being and Time; confrontations, deepening, perspectives, this collective volume, inspired by "a hermeneutics of Sachlichkeit", tries to offer a balance on the actuality and unactuality of existential analytics ninety years after publication of Being and Time. Authors from different contexts present the existential analytics in the historical and theoretical context of its first formulation, question the complex problem of a possible praxis or a possible ethics within Heideggerian ontology and measure the impact of existential analytics on contemporary thinkers. It emerges how, despite all the problems and open questions, "the debt of contemporary thought to Heidegger is great and how important it is to preserve the legacy of his thought and the tradition in which it is placed, beyond any false alternative between naive apologetics and radical criticism"

Abstract: This volume is the outcome of a conference on the work of Christopher Bayly held in Naples on March 2016. At less than one year from his untimely death, the convenors called on a group of specialists in several disciplinary areas, on which Bayly has left his enduring mark, to collaborate on a first survey of the rich and complex scientific legacy of the English historian. Each essay focuses on one of the extraordinary succession of great works by which he pioneered innovative approaches throughout his academic career. The collection as a whole provides therefore an account of Bayly’s foremost contributions to the different scholarly fields in which he made repeated breakthroughs, over a period of five decades, on some of the most advanced research fronts of international historiography: the local roots of Indian nationalism, the transition from pre-colonial to colonial India and the role of indigenous society in the establishment of European domination, the nature and limits of colonial power, the rise of the Second British Empire, the history of globalization and the nineteenth-century turn towards planetary modernity, the transregional development of liberalism and nationalism. The common aim of the authors is to highlight the stages of the path through which Bayly emerged, at the beginnings of the 2000s, as a key figure in the current revival and renewal of world history

Abstract: Diffractions. 1994: Philosophy put to test by Psychoanalysis, namely a changing over the method, better to say a style, of the philosophical discourse which “takes care” of other discourses, coming to aid or to annexe them, just because felt/perceived as deficient from the epistemological point of view, as they are no more than empirical knowledges, and thus in need of a “second foundation”.Beyond this canon, (it is) the experience of the proof of diffraction, with and within the thought itself, which means a mutual “de-construction and re-construction” of knowledges which assay themselves beyond any foolish and pretentious sovereignism. Diffractions. 2018: Psychoanalysis between Kultur and Civilisation, namely the whole of the cultural products; the social patterns; the political and institutional options; the whole of the values and ideologies that shapes the Kultur itself, diffracted by the psychoanalytical stream, beyond any childish “gentry” of Kultur on Civilisation
Abstract: Diffrazioni.

Abstract: This work intends to collect the results of studies and researches which contribute to strengthening the knowledge of the area and in documenting all these shades that converge on qualifying in a cultural entity as collective heritage: the single heritages, through knowledge can obtain in this way not only an adequate representation. It is thus not by chance, that this book is dedicated to the city of Naples, a city with a strong and complex identity, with classical roots, full of conflict and eager to confrontations; the artistic and cultural heritage that this city preserves, almost a catalogue of the entire Mediterranean civilization, of which it is the symbol, is made of great testimonies, but also of small fragments, of layers and mixtures, which together converge on the culture of ‘making a system’ aimed at the creation of a territory network, at the bringing closer and understanding of single cultural identities, at a best mutual perception

Abstract: Conceived as a slow and inexorable path of criticism of the ideology of the bourgeois world, this collection is divided into three sections. The first: Mystification: politics and religion is dedicated to philosophy. It is in the philosophy of his time that Marx found the theoretical tools to develop his critique of the bourgeois, materialistic, dialectical and therefore revolutionary society. In the second section Crisis: reforms and conflicts, Marx's theory becomes a method of analysis of the present, a powerful epistemological apparatus that makes it possible to shed light on the intrinsically contradictory character of contemporary capitalist societies. Finally, the last section: Globalisation: resistance and fights reconstructs Di Marco's approach to the "political" question. Here his interpretation of Marx's work is filtered through the relationship with the tradition of Italian operaism, to which the author recognizes the merit of having placed the accent on revolutionary subjectivity, finding however problematic his progressive estrangement from the dialectical core of Marxism. It is in the need to re-establish the center of the Marxist criticism of reality in the capital-labour conflict that can be identified the thread of the Marxist commitment of Giuseppe Antonio Di Marco, who, convinced of the actuality and usefulness of the Marxist categories, tests them against the contradictions and conflicts of the present time

Abstract: The arrival of the Allies in Italy in July 1943 was not the result of an impromptu decision, but rather of a prolonged debate that involved both political and military agencies in London and Washington for the first four years of the Second World War. The decision to pursue the defeat of the Axis through the invasion of Sicily had been reached by the Anglo-American leaders at Casablanca, in January 1943. The choice to give precedence to Italy in the framework of the European war was by no means a foregone conclusion, and its importance in the strategic developments of World War II in Europe has often been underestimated. This research seeks to re-evaluate the role that the elimination of Italy played in the overall strategy developed by the Allies during the first phase of the Mediterranean conflict. The analysis of the political debates, military planning, and strategic appreciations produced by Anglo-American decision-makers in the 1939-1943 period shows that the Allied wartime interest in Italy, its defeat and the occupation of its territory was the result of a long-term design

The volume contains twelve essays dedicated to the possible ways in which citizenship took shape during the contemporary age, analyzing the various historical concretions. Not a single, but a plural citizenship, an object and an epistemological instrument of many declinations - institutional, theoretical-political, juridical, philosophical. A reconstruction conducted through different places and times, ranging from the French and American revolutions to the immateriality of the digital divide. An original exam that interrogates the stories, practices and symbols that have linked individuals to their political communities

Abstract: In the globalized, postmodern world, the production of encounters and crashes between dissimilar cultures, ways of life, and systems of values has drastically increased in number. More and more frequently, they originate harsh conflicts, exhibiting the existence of alternative and apparently incompatible ways of living and thinking - culturally, religiously, economically and politically speaking. In this context, words as tolerance and intolerance have been put at the heart of the political debate. However, what is the real meaning of these political concepts? Why did they originate and how di

Abstract: Alongside analysing the oldest records of Roman inscriptions of Austria, this work particularly emphasizes the antiquarian-epigraphic collecting activity which can be noted in the area of Austria as a consequence of the spreading humanistic attitude. It focuses on the question, whether Augustinus Prygl Tyfernus is actually to be identified as the so-called ?Antiquus Austriacus? as has been pleaded repeatedly. The examination of a number of relevant known and hitherto extensively unknown copies shows that the ?Antiquus-Austriacus-Collection? is not a homogeneous compilation by a single ?auctor antiquissimus? but rather an anthology derived from different copies of varying quality, collected by Johannes Fuchsmagen

Abstract: The journals of the Lübeck cathedral chapter are handed down for the years 1523-1530, 1537-1540, and 1544-1549. They were kept in Latin and overwritten with "actus capitulares". The journals of the following decades have been lost. From 1583 on, the journals are preserved, but only fragmetnary. The latter were subsequently conducted in High German until the abolition of the chapter in 1804.This publication makestavailable the journal written in the years 1544-1549 by Johannes Tideman as Vizedekan and later as Dean. It is the 17th volume of the "Schleswig-Holsteinische Regesten und Urkunden" (SHRU), published by the Gesellschaft für Schleswig-Holsteinische Geschichte. it also is Vol. 107 of the series of the Publications of the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein.From volume 11 on the SHRU devote themselves to the protocols of the Lübeck cathedral chapter

Abstract: The papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book’s general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent – an endeavour that is unprecedented –, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive ‘cluster’ model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research.

Abstract: The notion that ideas and judgments about music are based on cultural-specific and national frames of reference and ideologies was not invented in the modern era. Taking an interdisciplinary perspective, this volume examines the role played by notions of communities such as Germani, Itali, and Franci (Germanic, Italian, and French) in medieval writings about music during the period between about 900 and 1500

Jahrhundert n.Chr. darstellt
Abstract: The first coherent and handy edition with commentaries of one oft he most important sources for history, administration and religious mentalities of the city of Rome in the 4th century A.D.The collection of pictures, lists and short notes, known as the "Chronography of 354" or the "Calendar of Filocalus" is a calendar handbook for the year 354 C.E. Of the thirteen texts, four are Christian documents; the remaining are witnesses of Roman administration and provide no clue for Christianity, or at times even attestations to the Roman religiosity of the Republic and the Imperial Time. The handbook contents can be distinguished by whether it has pictures or just text. Given the complexity of the present form of its constituents, the calendar handbook is an important source for the politic administrative history of the late-Constantine time, for the history of the transformation of religious mentalities, and for the success of the story of Christianity in the city of Rome. The following texts are especially noteworthy:(1)The consular fasti from the beginning of the consulate up to the year 354 CE, for the Roman History and the families that dominated it;(2)the yearly calendar for those festivals celebrated in late-Constantine time with their political and religio-historical dimension, which influenced the history of everyday life of the city;(3)the Catalogus Liberianus, the oldest Roman book of the popes, which together with the lists of the Deposito episcoporum and the Deposito martyrum, the oldest feriale of any Christian Church, is important for the Church of Rome and its conception of history.Notwithstanding a century-long history of editions and commentaries of the calendar handbook, there is up to the present no connected edition and commentary of the pertinent texts, only critical editions of individual parts. This is related to the complex tradition process and the preserved late manuscripts of the 16th and the 17th Century. This poses a range of problems, which this edition and its commentaries tackle:(a)what all was part of the original calendar(b)when did the different texts and their redactions, which lead to the expansions, come into being(c)the perennial research problem of the relationship between the traditional Roman religion and Christianity, for which the texts of the chronographs provide crucial evidence(d)the position of the calendar handbook in the history of book illustration in Late Antiquity.Furthermore, since Mommsen's classical ...

Abstract: "In republican times, one of Rome's deadliest enemies was King Mithridates of Pontus. In 66 BCE, after decades of inconclusive struggle, the tribune Manilius proposed a bill that would give supreme command in the war against Mithridates to Pompey the Great, who had just swept the Mediterranean clean of another menace: the pirates. While powerful aristocrats objected to the proposal, which would endow Pompey with unprecedented powers, the bill proved hugely popular among the people, and one of the praetors, Marcus Tullius Cicero, also hastened to lend it his support. In his first ever political speech, variously entitled pro lege Manilia or de imperio Gnaei Pompei, Cicero argues that the war against Mithridates requires the appointment of a perfect general and that the only man to live up to such lofty standards is Pompey. In the section under consideration here, Cicero defines the most important hallmarks of the ideal military commander and tries to demonstrate that Pompey is his living embodiment. This course book offers a portion of the original Latin text, study aids with vocabulary, and a commentary. Designed to stretch and stimulate readers, the incisive commentary will be of particular interest to students of Latin at both AS and undergraduate level. It extends beyond detailed linguistic analysis and historical background to encourage critical engagement with Cicero's prose and discussion of the most recent scholarly thought."--Publisher's website

Abstract: The aim of this book is to offer the reader a critical edition of the petitions in their original Italian language that (Catholic) Jews residing in Italy submitted to the Fascist General Administration for Demography and Race (Demorazza) in order either to be ¿́¿discriminated, ¿́¿ id est, not subjected to various provisions of Mussolini¿́¿s racial laws of 1938, or ¿́¿Aryanized, ¿́¿ id est, be considered not of ¿́¿the Jewish race, ¿́¿ as defined by the convoluted and inconsistent Fascist anti-Semitic legislation. Anyone born of parents who both were of ¿́¿the Jewish race, ¿́¿ even though professing a religion other than Judaism, was deemed to be Jewish. Consequently, the racial laws affected not only those Italians who considered themselves Jewish, whether secular or religious, but also a significant number of Catholics whose ancestors had been Jewish, as the majority of the cases contained in this volume show

Abstract: "Love and tragedy dominate book four of Virgil's most powerful work, building on the violent emotions invoked by the storms, battles, warring gods, and monster-plagued wanderings of the epic's opening. Destined to be the founder of Roman culture, Aeneas, nudged by the gods, decides to leave his beloved Dido, causing her suicide in pursuit of his historical destiny. A dark plot, in which erotic passion culminates in sex, and sex leads to tragedy and death in the human realm, unfolds within the larger horizon of a supernatural sphere, dominated by power-conscious divinities. Dido is Aeneas' most significant other, and in their encounter Virgil explores timeless themes of love and loyalty, fate and fortune, the justice of the gods, imperial ambition and its victims, and ethnic differences. This course book offers a portion of the original Latin text, study questions, a commentary, and interpretative essays. Designed to stretch and stimulate readers, Ingo Gildenhard's incisive commentary will be of particular interest to students of Latin at both A2 and undergraduate level. It extends beyond detailed linguistic analysis to encourage critical engagement with Virgil's poetry and discussion of the most recent scholarly thought."--Publisher's website

Abstract: Il 4 ottobre 1957 il bip bip cosmico dello Sputnik il primo satellite artificiale a ruotare attorno alla Terra, apre ufficialmente l'era spaziale.

Abstract: A much discussed question in classical studies is the comparison between the situation of poets in Augustan Rome and that of artists and intellectuals in the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. As instructive as this question proves to be for an understanding of the relation between the freedom of art and thinking on the one hand and power on the other, it also reveals the insufficiency of our present grasp of this crucial articulation of our humanity. This volume offers a multidisciplinary and comparative approach to the problem, complementing the historical perspective with a regard on Eastern traditions. It thus explores tentative paths for future research on an issue of critical importance for the shaping of the global world

Abstract: In recent years the leader of "Giustizia e Libertà" has been the focus of a renewed and extensive attention. The author reconstructs the itinerary of Carlo Rosselli, conducting the theoretical analysis in the light of the complexity of the historic context. From the years of the Great War to the exile in France, intellectual meditation and political commitment are inextricably entwined threads in the career of the Florentine antifascist. In the attempt to pinpoint the key passages of this unquiet quest, the book traces the stages of an evolving thought. A thought that was matured through critical comparison with liberal theory and Marxist doctrine, found inspiration in English socialism and conceived opposition to the Fascist regime as the grounds for a project of progressive democracy

Abstract: This book focuses on one of the prime movers in the unification of Lunigiana – a region which at the time was still broken up into a myriad of tiny feudal holdings, almost all in the hands of the various branches of the Malaspina family. The process of unification began in the fifteenth century, when various areas of the region were conquered by Milan and Florence, which also divided between them the hegemony of the remaining independent territories, while Genoa too displayed an interest in expansion in the region. As a result it became crucial for the local lords to manoeuvre between the various forces at play to maintain the independence of their own little states. Among the figures who displayed the greatest dexterity in this was Gabriele Malaspina, who became a leading player on the stage of local history. The book starts by illustrating the period in which Malaspina succeeded in obtaining his political independence, and then goes on to analyse the phase in which his policy came to be characterised by an absolute loyalty to Florence. Finally the book addresses the last part of the Marquis's life, marked by a progressive distancing from the Florentine alliance in favour of other entities, in which he nevertheless always succeeded in maintaining his independence

Abstract: This book is a collection of articles by Italian and foreign scholars designed to offer an overview of the processes and issues involved in the history of the confraternity movement, as yielded by studies in the historical, social, legal, literary and artistic spheres in the course of the twentieth century. The articles deal with the historical context of western Europe, and more specifically with Italy, in the period comprised between the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age. The collection is divided into four sections: Individuals and groups, which explores the emergence of an interest in confraternity communities in disciplines addressing the history of social groups, of the rural world, of women and of young people. The legal and institutional framework deals with issues of legitimacy and institutional structure. The economics of charity analyses the relations between the confraternities and the hospital structures, the procedures for the administration of the assets, and the strategies of governance underlying the policies of aid of which the confraternities were the principal instrument. Finally, the section Theatrical, musical, artistic and documentary evidence is devoted to the sources that have handed down evidence of the operation of the confraternities

Abstract: "In Fairy-Tale Science Suzanne Magnanini explores the birth and evolution of the literary fairy tale in the context of early modern discourses on the monstrous. She demonstrates how both the normative literary theories of the Italian intellectual establishment and the emerging New Science limited the genre's success on its native soil. Natural philosophers, physicians, and clergymen positioned the fairy tale in opposition to science, fixing it as a negative pole in a binary system, one which came to define both a new type of scientific inquiry and the nascent literary genre. Magnanini also suggests that, by identifying their literary production with the monstrous and the feminine, Straparola and Basile contributed to the marginalization of the new genre." "A wide-ranging yet carefully crafted study, Fairy-Tale Science investigates the complex interplay between scientific discourse and an emerging literary genre, and expands our understanding of the early modern European imagination."--Jacket

Abstract: Matematica e cultura, binomio sorprendente?

Abstract: This volume is devoted to one of the major aristocratic lineages of northern Italy in the later middle ages. The Rossi, whose political and social eminence dates back to the communal age, built in the Parmense a powerful lordship, based both on their estates and fortresses and on a vast patronage network spread over the territory and in the town: and the power of the family, though diminished after the crisis in the relations with the Sforza in 1482, was restored on partially different foundations during the Italian Wars. The essays collected in this book explore the complexity of the Rossi "little seignorial state", focusing on its internal constitution, on its exterior relations and on its artistic and cultural features between the mid-fourteenth and the early sixteenth century

Abstract: A landmark in the study of early modern Europe, this two-volume collection makes available for the first time a selection of the most important texts from court and civic festival books. Festival entertainments were presented to mark such occasions as royal and ducal entries to capital cities, dynastic marriages, the birth and christening of heirs, religious feasts and royal and ducal funerals. Europa Triumphans represents the chronological and trans-European range of the court and civic festival. These festivals are considered not simply as texts, but as events, and are introduced by groups o

Abstract: The Italian cities of the last centuries of the Middle Ages continued to witness – alongside a progressive crystallisation of the social hierarchies – the economic and social ascent of individuals belonging to the 'middle class’. These were homines novi who, without resorting to dynastic connections and often rejecting the associative model of the guilds, managed to build fortunes and dignity through trade, enterprise, the exploitation of the land, the solidarity of district and parish and the management of welfare. Emblematic of such careers is the figure of an economic agent originating from the rural district, Donato Ferrario da Pantigliate, who in 1429 founded in Milan a devotional and welfare institute, the Scuola della Divinità. The book reconstructs the social, economic and spiritual conduct of Donato, placing it within the urban context of Milan in the first half of the fifteenth century

Abstract: Main description: Porphyrio’s commentary for school use is the oldest extant commentary on Latin poetry. It forms part of the Graeco-Roman grammatical tradition, and offers a unique insight into 3rd century school and education systems. The investigation gives a detailed account of the educational aims, conditions, contents and methods used and reveals the academic categories on which they were based. The reader thus gains an impression not only of the state of Horace scholarship at the time, but also of the average educational standards of the Roman elites.
