    Kurzfassung: Der mediterrane Raum gehört weltweit zu den Gebieten mit der höchsten seismischen Aktivität. Insbesondere Griechenland und die heutige Türkei, aber auch große Teile Italiens oder der Levante wurden und werden in regelmäßigen Abständen von Erdbeben heimgesucht, die nicht selten katastrophale Folgen haben. Diese Ereignisse wurden bereits in der antiken Literatur in vielfältiger Art und Weise reflektiert und gedeutet. Innerhalb der altertumswissenschaftlichen Forschung ist das Thema Erdbeben in den letzten Jahrzehnten zwar verschiedentlich aufgegriffen worden, doch konzentrierte man sich dabei auf einige wenige Aspekte: Im Vordergrund standen die Katalogisierung von Einzelfällen, die Aufbereitung antiker Erklärungsansätze sowie die Untersuchung des materiellen Bewältigungshandelns. Zu vertiefenden Analysen, die das Phänomen über die Jahrhunderte hinweg, in seiner breiten räumlichen Ausdehnung und unter Berücksichtigung der verschiedenen Zeugnisformen betrachten, ist es bisher nicht gekommen. An dieser Stelle setzt der vorliegende Sammelband an. Er fragt nach den Beziehungen zwischen dem Eintreten von extremen seismischen Ereignissen und zeitgenössischen Weltanschauungen, nach Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Rekonstruierbarkeit vergangener Bebenkatastrophen sowie nach den Modi ihrer literarischen Repräsentation. Zu diesem Zweck versammelt der Band Expertisen aus unterschiedlichen altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen (Geschichts- und Literaturwissenschaft, Archäologie, Epigraphik) und darüber hinaus (historische Seismologie, Sinologie)

    Kurzfassung: Adel und Armut - diese beiden Begriffe scheinen nicht zusammenzupassen. Wer an Adel in der Zeit des Kaiserreichs denkt, assoziiert zumeist Schlösser, weitläufigen Landbesitz, rauschende Bälle, auf denen elegante Damen in prächtigen Kleidern mit schneidigen Gardeoffizieren tanzen. Der Adel gilt als Elite- und zwar besonders für die Zeit vor 1914, die im Rückblick oft gleichsam als seine letzte Blütezeit erscheint. Dabei handelt es sich aber um ein unvollständiges Bild adliger Lebenswirklichkeiten im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Johanna M. Singer zeigt einen anderen Teil der Geschichte des Adels im Kaiserreich, einen Teil, der wenig bekannt ist, der fernab von mondänem Lebensstil und politischem Einfluss stattfand und der den scheinbar so offensichtlichen Zusammenhang von Adel und Elite konterkariert. Er führt uns in die Welt adliger Frauen, die in kleinen Etagenwohnungen lebten, sich kein Dienstpersonal leisten konnten, sondern vielmehr selbst 'in Stellung gehen' mussten. Armut im Adel war in der Zeit um 1900 eine soziale Realität, die insbesondere ledige Frauen und Witwen betraf. Ihre Geschichte wurde bisher noch nicht geschrieben. Die Autorin geht Ursachen, Ausprägungen und Bewältigungsstrategien weiblicher Armut im Adel nach und fragt nicht zuletzt danach, wie die Frauen selbst und ihre Familien, aber auch Standesgenossen und staatliche Stellen mit diesem Phänomen umgingen

Des élèves français, suisses, catalans, allemands ont répondu à un questionnaire et raconté librement « leur » histoire nationale. Contre les idées reçues d'un manque de connaissances historiques et de l'absence de tout récit commun, l'enquête dévoile des formes de narration, des organisateurs du récit et des contenus partagés, une véritable trame commune. L'analyse de ces formes et contenus précise leurs points forts, mais aussi les absences ou les spécificités nationales, et montre comment les savoirs scolaires coexistent avec d'autres sources de connaissances. Sont étudiées en particulier les places respectives et les fonctions du politique, de la religion, de la guerre, dans ces récits qui témoignent d'un imaginaire national. Un effet « territorial » est enfin mis en valeur, à la fois moins important que prévu en France et significatif à l'échelle des pays. Sensibles au contexte, ces récits sont la manifestation juvénile d'une conscience historique en formation, qui s'exprime selon des formes inédites

Le présent recueil, issu de deux journées d'étude organisées à l'Institut catholique d'études supérieures (La Roche-sur-Yon), s'efforce d'en brosser un panorama, à partir de cas relevant de disciplines, de périodes et de corpus suffisamment variés pour présenter au chercheur en sciences humaines une vue générale des questions que suscitent ses propres pratiques en lien avec de telles sources. À la lumière de ces études, des questions récurrentes déterminent la recherche documentaire : ce que sont les sources, par quel examen critique les évaluer, comment les organiser, enfin comment élaborer un récit scientifique fidèle, autant que possible, à leurs enseignements. La source est-elle intègre, authentique, sincère, représentative ? Son témoignage, parfois polémique, est lacunaire aussi, parce que séparé de la culture dans laquelle il s'intégrait et que cherche à reconstituer le chercheur, à la manière d'un puzzle dont il ne subsisterait que quelques pièces. La critique des sources navigue entre une lecture littérale et une lecture hypercritique. Cette dernière risque de disqualifier par principe tout récit historien fondé sur des sources qui ne seraient jugées ni sûres, ni vérifiables, ni exploitables, comme les récits légendaires de la fondation de Rome. L'esprit critique, pourtant nécessaire à la déontologie scientifique, peut paralyser le discours savant quand il est systématisé. Mais comment apprécier un degré approprié de critique et un degré excessif ? La question des sources en vient donc à en ouvrir une autre, une interrogation de nature épistémologique et philosophique : comment fonder le savoir ?

Approaching the burgeoning field of environmental history in Canada through the lens of mobility reveals some of the distinctive ways in which Canadians have come to terms with the country's climate and landscape. Spanning Canada's diverse regions, throughout its history, from the closing of the age of sail to the contemporary era of just-on-time delivery, Moving Natures: Mobility and the Environment in Canadian History examines a wide range of topics, from the impact of seasonal climactic conditions on different transportation modes, to the environmental consequences of building mobility corridors and pathways, to the relationship between changing forms of mobility with tourism and other recreational activities. Contributors make use of traditional archival sources, as well as historical geographic information systems (HGIS), qualitative and quantitative analysis, and critical theory. This thought-provoking collection divides the intersection of environmental and mobility history into two approaches. The chapters in the first section deal primarily with the construction and productive use of mobility technologies and infrastructure, as well as their environmental constraints and consequences. The chapters in the second section focus on consumers' uses of those vehicles and pathways: on pleasure travel, tourism, and recreational mobility. Together, they highlight three quintessentially Canadian themes: seasonality, links between mobility and natural resource development, and urbanites' experiences of the environment through mobility

Or, que veut, que peut un Salon imaginaire, si ce n'est parler de ce dont il n'est pas question : la Révolution française. Ces 230 notices dans l'esprit des Salon de peinture du temps brassent les époques et les lieux. Pour dire sans dire les moments critiques de l'action. L'invention de tableaux à peindre, rarement la reprise d'œuvres réalisées, permettent de ne rien forclore. L'avenir du passé persiste et nourrit la réflexion sur le tragique de la décision qu'elle soit directement politique ou non. Les situations paroxystiques dans le goût de David, leur présentification mentale évoquent les premiers rôles, les complices et les comparses, presque toujours néfastes dans un entrelacs de métaphores cryptées et d'allégories en action. Les voix du silence permettent d'opposer au présent désespérant, celui de la Restauration, la sensibilité préromantique de la seconde génération des Lumières qui fit la Révolution. L'horizon d'attente reste celui d'une humanité réconciliée avec elle-même, de là, le renvoi au xxe siècle. Cette rêverie vagabonde d'un des acteurs majeurs de la Révolution permet une authentique page d'histoire culturelle du politique

Mais, bien plus qu'un simple journal, Gillotte nous a laissé un véritable reportage sur l'organisation du pèlerinage à La Mecque à l'époque ottomane. Il consulte la presse, les archives du consulat de France, interroge des témoins, rencontre des personnalités locales. Avec l'opiniâtreté d'un grand reporter, Gillotte entend jeter la lumière sur ce qu'il appelle les « dessous du pèlerinage » : spéculations sur le prix de l'eau, trafic de billets retours, corruption des autorités locales... Le portrait qu'il dresse de l'Empire ottoman finissant est sans concession et sa description très personnelle du pèlerinage à La Mecque révélatrice de la mentalité coloniale de l'époque. Pendant la traversée et lors de son séjour au Hedjaz, Gillotte a également pris un centaine de photographies - reproduites dans cet ouvrage - qui constituent un témoignage précieux sur l'histoire du pèlerinage à La Mecque et les circulations en Méditerranée et en mer Rouge au début du XXe siècle

Le point de départ de notre réflexion porte ici sur la nature des récits généalogiques en tant que configurations narratives de l'identité des acteurs sociaux, du Moyen Âge à l'époque contemporaine. Les funérailles conduisent les dépouilles apprêtées et souvent embaumées, exposées au public, ou représentées par leur effigie, à leur lieu d'ensevelissement, mausolées, nécropoles, églises selon un rituel bien défini où tous les acteurs ont leur place. Au contraire de la belle mort, les antifunérailles vouent les cadavres de ceux qui ont été puissants, souvent mutilés, parfois décapités, à l'infamie sur une place publique. Les rituels dépendent des circonstances, mort à la guerre ou suite d'une maladie, accident, exécution, assassinat, complot, crise de succession, publicité voulue de funérailles grandioses aux yeux du monde ou au contraire funérailles escamotées. L'écriture, qu'elle soit historiographique, hagiographique, rhétorique, journalistique ou même iconographique, joue un rôle primordial dans le récit de l'agonie, la commémoration, le dénigrement, la remémoration, l'héroïsation et la sanctification. Enfin, l'impact de la mort du prince s'inscrit dans l'histoire nationale et internationale, opposant le corps mortel au corps politique, la mort critique à la mort symbolique, le passé à l'avenir, l'après du pouvoir étant la question centrale

This collection contributes a sustained analysis of the beginning of major environmental debates in this era and examines a range of issues related to broad environmental concerns, topics which emerged as key concerns in the context of Cold War military investments and experiments, the oil crisis of the 1970s, debates over gendered roles, and the increasing attention to urban pollution and pesticide use. No other publication dealing with this period covers the wide range of environmental topics (among others, activism, midwifery, organic farming, recycling, urban cycling, and communal living) or geographic locales, from Yukon to Atlantic Canada. Together, they demonstrate how this period influenced and informed environmental action and issues in ways that have had a long-term impact on Canadian society.
