"Although the Ormánság [...] was a early subject of ethnographic scrutiny, in particular for such oddities as undergirded (talpas) houses, white skirt (bikla), and its archaic forms of agriculture, the present publication seeks not to analyse the ethnographic group that lived there, not to offer a detailed examination of its past or present, but to explore the history and composition of a particular set of museum photographs, a collection that depicts a peasant world with truly antique traditions."
