Abstract: From the late Sixties on, industrial development in Italy evolved through the spread of small and medium sized firms, aggregated in district networks, with an elevated propensity to enterprise and the marked presence of owner-families. Installed within the local systems, the industrial districts tended to simulate large-scale industry exploiting lower costs generated by factors that were not only economic. The districts are characterised in terms of territorial location (above all the thriving areas of the North-east and Centre) and sector, since they are concentrated in the "4 As" (clothing-fashion, home-decor, agri-foodstuffs, automation-mechanics), with some overlapping with "Made in Italy". How can this model be assessed? This is the crucial question in the debate on the condition and prospects of the Italian productive system between the supporters of its capacity to adapt and the critics of economic dwarfism. A dispassionate judgement suggests that the prospects of "small is beautiful" have been superseded, but that the "declinist" view, that sees only the dangers of globalisation and the IT revolution for our SMEs is risky. The concept of irreversible crisis that prevails at present is limiting, both because it is not easy either to "invent", or to copy, a model of industrialisation, and because there is space for a strategic repositioning of the district enterprises. The book develops considerations in this direction, showing how an evolution of the district model is possible, focusing on: gains in productivity, scope economies (through diversification and expansion of the range of products), flexibility of organisation, capacity to meld tradition and innovation aiming at product quality, dimensional growth of the enterprises, new forms of financing, active presence on the international markets and valorisation of the resources of the territory. It is hence necessary to reactivate the behavioural functions of the entrepreneurs

Abstract: The evaluation of the performance of a private or public company, based on the concepts of productivity and efficiency, must be carried out using suitable methodological tools, specifically identified within a production theory. The volume offers an overview of the evolution of the concept of efficiency - and in particular of technical efficiency with respect to production possibilities - and of the methodologies related to measurement problems, through an exposition that examines both the theoretical aspects and the practical ones, with particular reference to the academic environment

Abstract: The lagging behind of the Italian economy in the sphere of technologically advanced manufacture represents a significant factor in the debate on the risks of the country's decline. Nevertheless we know relatively little about the diffusion in Italy of companies specialising in information technology. The research presented in this book - the outcome of a national project - reveals how this sector is dominated by small businesses, concentrated in a number of urban areas (the cases studied are Pisa, Florence, Turin, Osimo and Castelfidardo). It emerges that the social networks linking the businessmen with University researchers are crucial to an understanding of the processes of innovation. But what is equally important is the capacity of the collective entities, both public and private, to provide the entire country with the services that are indispensable for the development of enterprise

Abstract: This volume collects the best dissertations from the academic years 1999/00 and 2000/01 by students of the European Master in Work Sciences of the Department of Political Sciences "Cesare Alfieri" in Florence. The contributions focus on the theme of labour and its regulation in European countries, analysing aspects such as work flexibility, training, corporate industrial relations, corporate social responsibility, the promotion of participation of women and disabled people in the job market . These issues constitute privileged points of observation to highlight both the effects of promoting change in the process of European political integration and the role played by the presence of certain institutional architectures related to welfare, economic and work regulation systems that continue to differ from country to country. Looking at the coexistence between stability and change with a multidisciplinary and comparative approach like the one used in the works collected here is like using a kaleidoscope that helps to shed light on the multiple balances and on the different development paths that characterise the so-called "European social model"
