Ces textes, par contre, qui cernent une évolution, révèlent une sensibilité, explorent dans le langage devenu rare de l'honnête homme des zones d'intérêt universel, font rejaillir leur gloire sur l'université entière qui a su, malgré tout, se conserver de tels êtres, géants d'hier dont on souhaite qu'ils aient été prolifiques et qu'ils découragent, demain, les nains. Pierre Reboul voudra nous dire merci pour ce recueil mais c'est nous qui sommes ses débiteurs, une fois encore, et qui le remercions de ce qu'il a fait, certes, mais surtout de ce qu'il est et d'être des nôtres

Literature of the People's Republic of Chinapresents a generous sampling in translation of the literature written in the PRC from 1949 to the present.     Abstract: The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia document the colony through its first twenty-five years and includes correspondence between Georgia founder James Oglethorpe and the Trustees for Establishing the Colony, as well as records pertaining to land grants; agreements and interactions with Indigenous peoples; the settlement of a small Jewish community and the Salzburgers, German-speaking Protestant refugees; and the removal on restrictions of land tenure, rum, and slavery in the colony. Most of the local records of colonial Georgia were destroyed during the Revolution. Under Governor James Wright's direction, merchant John Graham loaded much of the official records on his vessel in the Savannah River. During the Battle of the Rice Boats in March 1776, the Inverness was burned while it lay at anchor. The destructive civil war that occurred in the latter phases of the Revolution resulted in further destruction. The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, drawn from archival material in Great Britain, remain a unique source. Volume 28, Part II includes the papers of Governor James Wright, acting governor James Habersham, and others.     Abstract: From Appomattox to World War I, Blacks continued their quest for a secure position in the American system. The problem was how to be both black and American-how to find acceptance, or even toleration, in a society in which the boundaries of normative behavior, the values, and the very definition of what it meant to be an American were determined and enforced by whites. A few black leaders proposed selfsegregation inside the United States within the protective confines of an allBlack community as one possible solution. The Blacktown idea reached its peak in the fifty years after the Civil War; at least sixty Black communities were settled between 1865 and 1915.Norman L. Crockett has focused on the formation, growth and failure of five such communities. The towns and the date of their settlement are: Nicodemus, Kansas (1879), established at the time of the Black exodus from the South; Mound Bayou, Mississippi (1897), perhaps the most prominent Black town because of its close ties to Booker T. Washington and Tuskegee Institute: Langston, Oklahoma (1891), visualized by one of its promoters as the nucleus for the creation of an allBlack state in the West; and Clearview (1903) and Boley (1904), in Oklahoma, twin communities in the Creek Nation which offer the opportunity observe certain aspects of IndianBlack relations in this area.The role of Blacks in town promotion and settlement has long been a neglected area in western and urban history, Crockett looks at patterns of settlement and leadership, government, politics, economics, and the problems of isolation versus interaction with the white communities. He also describes family life, social life, and class structure within the black towns.Crockett looks closely at the rhetoric and behavior of blacks inside the limits of their own community-isolated from the domination of whites and freed from the daily reinforcement of their subordinate rank in the larger society. He finds that, long before "Black is beautiful" entered the American vernacular, Blacktown residents exhibited a strong sense of race price. The reader observes in microcosm Black attitudes about many aspects of American life as Crockett ties the Blacktown experience to the larger question of race relations at the turn of the century.This volume also explains the failure of the Blacktown dream. Crockett cites discrimination, lack of capital, and the many forces at work in the local, regional, and national economies. He shows how the racial and townbuilding experiment met its demise as the residents of allBlack communities became both economically and psychologically trapped.This study adds valuable new material to the literature on black history, and makes a significant contribution to American social and urban history, community studies, and the regional history of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi

    Abstract: Born in Copenhagen in the early nineteenth-century and trained by his father, French ballet master, Antoine Bournonville, August Bournonville was an iconoic dance master and principal choreography of the Royal Danish Ballet with his incorporation of French Romanticism in his ballet choreography. Known for detailed, quick footwork and delicate arm and torso contrast, Bournonville's style of dance became known as the Bournonville Method, today considered the unfiltered 19th century technique of the French school of classical dance. Over a century since his death, Bournonville's influence remains seen on the Danish and greater European stage, imported to theatre classes and stages across the world

    Abstract: The Good Neighbor Policy was tested to the breaking point by ArgentinaU.S. relations during World War II. In part, its durability had depended both upon the willingness of all American republics to join with the United States in resisting attempts by extrahemispheric sources to intervene in New World affairs and upon continuity within the United States foreignpolicy establishment. During World War II, neither prerequisite was satisfied, Argentina chose to pursue a neutralist course, and the Latin American policy of the United States became the subject of a bitter bureaucratic struggle within the Roosevelt administration. Consequently, the principles of nonintervention and noninterference, together with "absolute respect for the sovereignty of all states," ceased to be the guideposts of Washington's hemispheric policy.In this study, Randall Bennett Woods argues persuasively that Washington's response to Argentine neutrality was based more on internal differences-individual rivalries and power struggles between competing bureaucratic empires-than on external issues or economic motives. He explains how bureaucratic infighting within the U.S. government, entirely irrelevant to the issues involved, shaped important national policy toward Argentina.Using agency memoranda, State Department records, notes on conversations and interviews, memoirs, and personal archives of the participants, Woods looks closely at the rivalries that swayed the course of ArgentineAmerican relations. He describes the personal motives and goals of men such as Sumner Welles, Cordell Hull, Henry Morgenthau, Harry Dexter White, Henry A. Wallace, and Milo Perkins. He delineates various cliques within the State Department, including the contending groups of Welles Latin Americanists and Hull internationalists-and describes the power struggles between the State Department, the Treasury Department, the Board of Economic Welfare, the Caribbean Defense Command, and other agencies. Of special interest to students of contemporary history will be Woods's discussion of the careers and views of Juan Peron and Nelson Rockefeller-for American policy contributed in no small way to Peron's rise, and Rockefeller was the man chiefly responsible for the U.S. rapprochement with Argentina in 1944-45. Woods also gives special attention to the impact of the Wilsonian tradition-especially its contradictions-on policy formation. The last chapter, dealing with Argentina's admission to the U.N., sheds some light on the origins of the Cold War.Wood's investigation of the Argentine problem makes a significant contribution toward the understanding of U.S.Latin American relations in the era of the Good Neighbor Policy, and provides new insights into the evolution of hemispheric policy as a whole during World War II. Josef Konvitz provides a broad comparative study of European port cities since the Renaissance by examining how they were built and rebuilt in the context of urban industrialization. Konvitz argues that as seafaring became more critical to Western civilization, intellectuals and rulers placed more importance on urban planning. Planning looked different, of course, in various European cities. In Paris, riverside planning was patched into the existing frame of the city, whereas Scandinavian towns on the Baltic were over-designed to accommodate a degree of maritime trade unsustainable for cities writ large.     Abstract: "Semiotics: A Discipline or an Interdisciplinary Method?" -the query with which the internationally celebrated scholar Umberto Eco has titled his contribution to this volume-articulates a question raised in many quarters and will evoke interest among specialists not only in semiotics but also in communication, linguistics, literary criticism, and anthropology. The thirteen essays in this collection are the outcome of a pilot program in Semiotics in the Humanities held at Indiana University during the 1975-76 academic year. The lectures, a highlight of the program, are here produced in revised form. They fall under four major headings: historiography, with two articles, one on the origins of semiotics and the other on Peirce's theory of signs; methodology, which includes three articles that consider Eco's query and discuss the relation between social communication and semiosis; nonverbal communication, explored among animals and in man, with a focus on sign language in general; culture theory, religion, text analysis, and translation. André Magdelain, qui fut un des meilleurs spécialistes en matière de droit romain, le montre dans ce livre à propos du concept de loi. Au début, c'est le détenteur du pouvoir, le roi puis le magistrat qui dicte la loi, que le peuple n'a qu'à ratifier - le latin disait « recevoir la loi », accipere legem - et encore n'entrait-elle en vigueur que lorsque le Sénat lui avait donné son « autorité », seul susceptible de la rendre opératoire. Ce n'est que peu à peu que le principe de la souveraineté populaire s'est fait jour et que la loi est apparue comme émanant de la volonté des citoyens. L'ouvrage reste un des meilleurs exemples d'approche historique du droit romain et montre combien les cadres juridiques sont importants pour comprendre le monde de la Rome ancienne
