Abstract:
Schmuck zierte zu allen Zeiten und in allen Kulturen nicht nur den menschlichen Körper, sondern bedeutete auch Statussymbol und Insignum der Macht. Dieser Bildband liefert dafür viele Beispiele aus 4 verschiedenen Kontinenten. Grundlage bildet die umfangreiche völkerkundliche Schmucksammlung des Ehepaares Ghysels, die ihre Kollektion hiermit einer Öffentlichkeit zugänglich machen. Die belgische Kunsthistorikerin F. Borel führt mit einem Essay über die Kunst des Sammelns in das Thema ein und verfasste auch die kulturhistorischen Einführungen in die Schmuckkunst der verschiedenen Kontinente. Der Abbildungsteil bringt eine große Anzahl von kunsthandwerklichen Schmuckstücken, die aus den verschiedensten Materialien und zu den verschiedensten Anlässen hergestellt wurden. Die Bildlegenden dazu verfasste sachkundig Colette Ghysels. Ein opulent ausgestattetes Werk mit einer erstaunlichen Fülle kunstvollen Geschmeides in seinen vielfältigen Ausprägungen.
