    Abstract: The essay aims at reconstructing the history of the University of Florence, from the fall of fascism on July 25th 1943 to the post-World War II period. At the center of this path lies Piero Calamandrei's Rettorato, which began in the summer of 1943 and immediately interrupted by events related to September 8th and the armistice with the Allied powers. As dean of the university, in the aftermath of the Liberation of Florence in August 1944, Calamandrei marked a significant turning point. It was a turning point that not only promptly revived teaching and research functions; but it was also able to provide for the reinstatement of teachers expelled as a result of the racial legislation and for opposition to fascism, along with the beginning of the removals of teachers most involved with the dictatorship. At the same time, in the context of a city deeply involved in the Liberation, the new constitutional order of the Republic began to be drawn; a constitutional project to which Florentine professors - such as Piero Calamandrei and Giorgio La Pira - would offer an outstanding contribution

    Abstract: This article deals with some specific characteristics of the Italo-Albanian (Arbëresh) verbal system, including the “presumptive” and “unfinished” past, but focuses especially on the expression of Aktionsart with the help of peri­phrases variously present, if not only marginally, in Balkan Albanian and already attested in the first Arbëresh grammars of the 19th century. The distribution of the periphrastic constructions with progressive and imminentive functions in a series of Italo-Albanian dialects is analysed on the basis of an initial overview of durative periphrases presented in Savoia (1991), but enriched by further research and integrated into a broader typological overview. The author hypothesises that the periphrases in question are not so much the result of linguistic contact with actual Italo-Romance varieties, but rather go back to the Balkan context of possibly Proto-Romance origin

Through references to the Holy Scriptures and to Augustine, Malebranche constructs a meditative itinerary that differs from the one proposed by Descartes, as it moves from the lumière naturelle in the Cartesian sense to the lumière of the Word.     Abstract: Esse-perfect in Macedonian: lexical distribution and contextual restrictions - The present article deals with the esse-perfect in Macedonian, also found in Aromanian and some Albanian dialects, which is formed with verbs of both aspects by means of the auxiliary sum ‘to be’ plus the (formally) passive participle. In contrast to previous work on this topic, our research sets out to determine the domains of usage for this construction in Macedonian, both in the standard language and its dialects, especially those on the western periphery and in linguistic enclaves surrounded by Albanian-speaking communities. In addition to personal fieldwork, three main corpora serve as a material basis for this task; see the list of sources at the end of the article. The formation of the esse-perfect is rather limited when compared with the other two perfects of Macedonian. In particular, its distribution clearly depends on lexical verb classes, with language contact accounting for less rigid restrictions and a wider usage of this construction

The data, compared to those of Italian, show that the three different strategies for the realisation of Standard Albanian and Arbëresh non-active morphology interact with the categories of mood, tense and aspect. In particular, these morphological strategies determine a perfective/ imperfective split as well as a series of restrictions which convey different interpretations associated with a stative or eventive interpretation. Particular attention is paid to the possible influence of Italian structures on the Italo-Albanian varieties in the domain of non-active voice

    Abstract: This paper deals with the Upper Sorbian aspect categories. While the traditional inflectional opposition imperfect vs. aorist is still widely used in the standard variety, it has almost disappeared from the colloquial variety used in the Catholic area of Upper Lusatia in Eastern Germany. By contrast, the derivational opposition of perfectivity formally persists in this area but has undergone some changes which are very specific to this variety. In particular, this aspect opposition, expressed by means of prefixes and suffixes has been radically restructured, such that its functional domain has shifted from grammatical aspect to grammatical telicity. It is argued that the starting point of this change is to be sought in an identification of the Sorbian aspect-sensitive grammatical prefixes with the German prefixes which mainly express telicity in processes of word formation.     Abstract: Consciousness is connected with the fact that a subject is aware and open to the manifestation of whatever appears. Existence, by contrast, is used to express the fact that something is given in experience, is present, or is real. Usually, the two notions are taken to be somehow related.     Abstract: The article analyses the morphological means used by the Slovenian dialects of Friuli in adapting loan verbs to their aspectual system in comparison to the traditional means of expressing verbal aspect in the indigenous Slavic lexicon. In relation to verbs of Slavic origin, the formation of aspectual pairs was mainly realised by means of prefixation to the base verb (thereby perfectivising it), whereas with loans from the adjacent Romance varieties (Friulian, Italian, Venetian) suffixation proves more productive (yielding imperfectivisation). The analysis is carried out on the dialect of Resia as well as those from the Torre and Natisone Valleys. Despite some differences, in all three dialects there is generally a strong tendency to integrate loan verbs into the aspectual systems of these varieties. Biaspectual verbs, on the other hand, are relatively rare except for the particular case of the verbs in -inat in Resian

    Abstract: This paper has two main objectives, to present some essential aspectual properties of Molise Slavic in comparison with other varieties in situations of strong language contact, and to discuss the role of language contact in each of these. Besides the grammatical categories of verbal aspect in the narrow sense, we deal with several more or less grammaticalised periphrases that also express aspectual functions or whose usage, at least, is triggered under the influence of verbal aspect. As in some other Slavic languages, having preserved traces of the original dual aspect system, Molise Slavic still displays a morphosyntactic aspectual opposition expressed by means of the perfect vs. imperfect, in addition to the Slavic derivational opposition between perfective vs. imperfective. Both oppositions combine with each other. The role of Romance in the reorganisation of these categories is discussed. The most salient innovation from a formal perspective is the imminentive calqued from Italian, but combinations of full verbs with phasal and modal verbs also show Romance influence. The results of the influence of dominant varieties on Molise Slavic in the area of aspectuality are compared with the development and behaviour of corresponding phenomena in the other languages and language families presented in this volume, in particular Resian and Slavic minority languages in Austria and Germany, Italo-Albanian, Italo-Greek, Baltic, German-based varieties in Northern Italy and Macedonian-based varieties in Albania and North Macedonia

    Abstract: The article examines two explicitly different meanings of the expression 'pervasiveness of lordship'. The first moves from the more commune meaning of pervasiveness, understood as a synonym of capillary diffusion, to distinguish between areas of seigniorial centrality and areas of seigniorial marginality in late medieval Italy. The second meaning understands “pervasiveness” in a less usual sense, i.e. as the capacity of lordship to thoroughly penetrate the surrounding world.     Abstract: This paper takes a fresh look at Johannes Clauberg’s Logica vetus et nova, in order to try to clarify its nature and character. Differently from prior readings of Clauberg that analyze his philosophy from the point of view of the construction of ‘ontology’, the approach of the present paper sees in Clauberg’s philosophy a late-Humanist work, accentuating his pedagogic and hermeneutical interests. Indeed, in Clauberg’s philosophy, hermeneutics and pedagogy are intrinsically bound together.     Abstract: This historical research starts from the books of Ambrósio Fernández Merino and explores the figure of their owner, a mysterious Spanish lawyer who lived in Florence. The result is the discovery of a little-known intellectual and of a woman who was, on the contrary, very well-known and present in the social chronicles of her time: Marie Louise La Farge. A wealthy American of French origins, divorced and married four times, she lived in London, Paris, Rome and died in Florence in 1899. After her will gave rise to a legal battle that reignited public interest on her life, she fell into oblivion. Her story resurfaced from some ownership notes found on several books of Merino’s library, books owned by Louise’s ex-husbands. The library was given to the University of Florence by the La Farge’s heirs

    Abstract: This book, inspired by the thought of Giacomo Becattini, reflects on why local communities continue to exist and spread. Why does the planet not become one place without borders? Why instead do we humans preferentially group ourselves into communities that are neither 'too wide' nor 'too narrow'? What characterizes today's form of community? Why are these communities rooted in places? What is peculiarly 'local' about places? Together with Becattini, we answer that the foundation of local communities is social culture. In its material and symbolic dimensions, social culture animates various forms of proximity between people and between groups: in addition to territorial proximity, social proximity (also online) and institutional proximity matter a lot. This implies that today a local community is not only a place where social culture makes us physically close, but where at least some of the major forms of proximity intersect

    Abstract: Verbal aspect in the Macedonian dialect of Boboshtica-Drenova and Albanian-Slavic language contact - Long-term subdominant bilingualism with Albanian has had a significant impact on verbal aspect marking in the Macedonian dialect of Boboshtica-Drenova (South-East Albania). The Slavic formal opposition of perfective and imperfective aspect marked through a variety of derivational methods has been preserved. However, under Albanian influence two continuous aspect con­structions have been grammaticalised in the dialect, one of them based on the locative ǵe, and the other on the adversative conjunction toko. The paths of grammaticalization of these markers are investigated, which include structural transfer (ǵe 〈 locative and temporal tek, toko 〈 adversative and continuous po), which is partially supported by the phonetic similarity between the respective Albanian and Macedonian dialectal markers (toko || duke, tek)

    Abstract: This article sets out to present a recent study of progressive and prospective periphrases in Cimbrian, a German-based variety spoken in Northern Italy. Our research complements a renewed interest in the grammaticalization processes of progressive periphrases in inland-German dialects and standard German, focusing on German-based dialects that are spoken in isolation, namely not under the roof of Standard German. In such varieties similar processes take place; they show, however, accelerated dynamics due to the contact situation and can, thus, shed light on the diachrony of German and its dialects. In relation to the aspectual constructions in Cimbrian, we discovered a previously undocumented perspective periphrasis, viz. soin drumauz + zu-INF, which, however, is destined to be discarded from the aspectual system of Cimbrian on account of the expansion of the more general periphrasis soin nå + zu-INF. In terms of the dynamics of contact-induced grammar change, our research confirms that new constructions in a contact language are not simply the replication of those in the donor language but, rather, represent the internal recombination of abstract features in the aspectual system of Cimbrian

    Abstract: Despite a rather conflicted origin and a controversial genealogy, the Fatimids were one of the most promising and flourishing dynasties in Islam. Their two-century reign, from 969 to 1171, represents a significant period in the history of the medieval Mediterranean.     Abstract: The article provides a survey of aspect-tense (AT) grams in (North) Slavic and Baltic, with some account of Finnic. More recently developed grams (bound morphology and constructions) are evaluated against a deeper diachronic and larger areal backdrop in order to assess the significance of contact as a factor contributing to convergence of Slavic and Baltic varieties in the AT domain. In fact, the amount of actually converging features related to grammatical oppositions in this area is quite small; these are: (i) Prominent parallels in the strict subject- vs. object-oriented division of perfects in Slavic (mainly Belarusian) rural varieties, which must have been supported by an ancient and very stable Baltic model. (ii) Suffixation patterns of stem derivation in Aukštaitian Lithuanian resembling Slavic secondary imperfectivisation. The reasons for a generally low level of mutual influence between Baltic and Slavic are subjected to some methodological discussion
