    Abstract: The topic of human sacrifice, which tends to provoke both fascination and disgust, leaves few people indifferent and remains a highly contested academic issue. The present volume is not concerned with the historical reality of human sacrifice, a question that continues to divide historians and anthropologists. Rather, it is interested in how different ancient cultures represented human sacrifice differently, both theirs and that of others, either as an event or a symbol. How does a society confront what might have been -or what it thought was- its own cruel and bloody past? What are the culturally specific values through which human sacrifice was understood in each group, and how did they differ in the case of other related practices, such as anthropophagy? How have these perceptions changed over time, and how have they adapted to the transformations of ideology? The core of the volume is concerned with the abundantly detailed material of ancient Greece. The Greek evidence and its interpretation are challenged by various articles on the ancient practice and its representation in other ancient cultures, China, Aztec Mesoamerica, and imperial Rome, which offer fundamentally different viewpoints, and provide a myriad of occasions for reflecting on contrast and the need to constantly question the fundamental terms of our analysis
    Abstract: Le thème du sacrifice humain ne peut laisser indifférent et continue de susciter bien des interrogations, entre fascination et dégoût. Historiens et anthropologues se divisent sur l’historicité supposée du phénomène. Pour sortir de l’impasse, cet ouvrage se penche sur la manière dont les cultures se représentent le sacrifice humain, le leur ou celui des autres, fût-il réel ou symbolique. Comment une société fait-elle face à ce qui est - ou ce qu’elle croit être - son passé cruel et sanglant ? Quelles sont les valeurs dont le sacrifice humain, et d’autres concepts proches, comme l’anthropophagie, se trouvent chargés en vertu des normes indigènes ? Comment ces perceptions ont-elles persisté dans la longue durée et comment se sont-elles adaptées aux idéologies changeantes ? Le coeur du volume est consacré au dossier hellénique, remarquablement documenté par les Grecs eux-mêmes. À ce dossier répondent en contrepoint plusieurs articles sur la Chine ancienne, les Aztèques, et la Rome antique, qui projettent un regard différent et sont autant de raisons de remettre cent fois sur le métier cet objet fascinant.

    Abstract: Comment comprendre que des ascètes aient développé en Inde une tradition martiale extrêmement élaborée, tout en ayant fait des vœux stricts de « non-violence » ? Et comment se fait-il que des leaders syndicalistes à poigne puissent se réclamer avec conviction des mêmes idéaux que Gandhi, ou encore que des brahmanes hésitent aussi peu à manier le bâton tout en affichant haut et fort leur foi dans la non-violence ? De telles façons d’agir, souvent paradoxales à nos yeux, sont susceptibles cependant de renouveler notre compréhension des notions de violence et de non-violence dans la société indienne, contredisant en particulier l'idée que l’on s’en fait habituellement depuis le gandhisme. Douze études, portant sur des périodes, des lieux, des protagonistes fort divers, montrent que, bien souvent, la non-violence est ce au nom de quoi la violence se légitime, ce qui lui confère du sens. Mais la valorisation de « la » non-violence repose sur des interprétations en réalité très variées de cette expression, et sur des rapports de force qui relativisent et hiérarchisent des points de vue distincts, tout en permettant leur maintien.

The conference Representing Gods and Humans in the Ancient Near-East and in the Bible, held at the Collège de France, Paris, on May 5-6 2015, sought to shed light on these questions surrounding the image, a critical issue for our understanding of ancient as well as modern religions

Faisant usage de sources historiques, Aline Schlaepfer examine les strate¿¿gies que ceux-ci mirent en place pour s¿́¿assurer une pre¿¿sence permanente dans la sphe¿¿re publique en Irak. En analysant leurs discours et leurs alle¿¿geances, l'auteure montre qu¿́¿ils ne cesse¿¿rent jamais de s¿́¿exprimer publiquement sur les de¿¿bats politiques les plus sensibles en Irak: nationalisme, communautarisme, colonialisme, nazisme et fascisme. In Les intellectuels juifs de Bagdad. Discours et alle¿¿geances (1908-1951) , Aline Schlaepfer focuses on a group of Arabic-speaking Jewish intellectuals in Baghdad. Making use of historical materials, the author examines how strategies were negotiated by Jewish intellectuals in order to maintain a presence in the Iraqi public sphere. By analysing their discourses and allegiances, she shows that they continuously expressed their views on the most sensitive political debates in Iraq, such as nationalism, sectarianism, colonialism, Nazism and fascism. This work follows their trajectory during a turbulent period in Iraqi history; the 1908 Young-Turk Revolution, the creation of Iraq (1920), several coups d¿́¿e¿¿tat (1936 et 1941), and the creation of the State of Israel (1948), eventually leading to their departure from Iraq in 1951

    Abstract: Les Touaregs Kel Ferwan nomadisent aux portes de la vieille ville d'Agadez, déplaçant leurs lourdes tentes en nattes de doum. La tente kel ferwan, avec sa base circulaire analogue au cercle de la terre, sa forme sphérique évoquant la voûte céleste, et ses quatre piquets d'angles semblables aux quatre piliers qui, dit-on, soutiennent le ciel aux quatre coins du monde, est censée être une réplique du cosmos. Dieu en donna autrefois le plan aux Touaregs et, depuis, ces tentes toujours reconstruites selon ce modèle immuable et céleste sont transmises de mère en fille. La tente en effet appartient à l'épouse, alors que l'époux, même s'il en est le « maître », n'y est qu'un hôte. Dès qu'il commence à devenir un homme, l'adolescent déserte la tente de sa mère et mène une vie incertaine durant laquelle il partage de précaires abris de nattes avec des compagnons d'âge. Il ne réintègre une tente que lorsqu'il se marie, et un divorce ou le veuvage peut toujours le ramener à la condition précaire de l'adolescent. Cependant, les tentes appartenant à des femmes, et auxquelles toute une symbolique attribue un caractère féminin, se regroupent autour d'hommes puisque chaque campement rassemble un homme, ses fils, son épouse et ses brus. Dans le paradoxe constitué par ces campements d'hommes vivant dans des tentes appartenant à des femmes s'inscrit l'essentiel de la vie sociale touarègue, dont ce livre décrit le déroulement rythmique. The Kel Ferwan Tuareg roam beyond the gates of the old city of Agadez, moving their heavy tents of palm mats. The tent of the Kel Ferwan is held to be a replica of the cosmos : its circular base is analogous to the earth circle, its spherical form recalls that of the celestial vault, and its four stakes are similar to the four pillars said to uphold the sky at the four corners of the earth.     Abstract: The papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book’s general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent – an endeavour that is unprecedented –, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive ‘cluster’ model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research.

    Abstract: This book is a collection of articles by Italian and foreign scholars designed to offer an overview of the processes and issues involved in the history of the confraternity movement, as yielded by studies in the historical, social, legal, literary and artistic spheres in the course of the twentieth century. The articles deal with the historical context of western Europe, and more specifically with Italy, in the period comprised between the Middle Ages and the early Modern Age. The collection is divided into four sections: Individuals and groups, which explores the emergence of an interest in confraternity communities in disciplines addressing the history of social groups, of the rural world, of women and of young people.     Abstract: This study, emerging from workshop activity carried out as part of the course on ECONOMY AND ADMINISTRATION OF CO-OPERATION AND NON-PROFIT, represents an examination of the economic-financial dimension of the work of the Tuscan voluntary organisations. It is inserted within an articulated research process devoted to an analysis of the accountability of these third sector agents, in the awareness that voluntary work has always been an important factor in civil progress. More specifically, the economic and financial information made available to the provinces as a result of the obligation on the voluntary organisations to deposit the annual financial statement has been fully exploited. This compliance has thus been transformed from a mere bureaucratic procedure into an opportunity for a collective cognitive enrichment through collection at regional level, reclassification and the aggregate analysis of the economic and financial data relating to the management reports (profit and loss accounts) of the voluntary organisations for 2004-2005. This has made it possible to underscore the nature and provenance of the economic and financial resources that accrue annually to such bodies, as well as the principal productive factors "consumed" in the performance of their activities

Such products encompass an increasingly intangible value connected, not only with their intrinsic qualities, but also with what is evoked by the production methods and the context from which they originate. The typical product is identified by a decided stability in the features, deriving from the concentration of a major historic tradition in geographically small territories by a relatively restricted human group.     Abstract: Comment comprendre que des ascètes aient développé en Inde une tradition martiale extrêmement élaborée, tout en ayant fait des vœux stricts de « non-violence » ? Et comment se fait-il que des leaders syndicalistes à poigne puissent se réclamer avec conviction des mêmes idéaux que Gandhi, ou encore que des brahmanes hésitent aussi peu à manier le bâton tout en affichant haut et fort leur foi dans la non-violence ? De telles façons d’agir, souvent paradoxales à nos yeux, sont susceptibles cependant de renouveler notre compréhension des notions de violence et de non-violence dans la société indienne, contredisant en particulier l'idée que l’on s’en fait habituellement depuis le gandhisme. Douze études, portant sur des périodes, des lieux, des protagonistes fort divers, montrent que, bien souvent, la non-violence est ce au nom de quoi la violence se légitime, ce qui lui confère du sens. Mais la valorisation de « la » non-violence repose sur des interprétations en réalité très variées de cette expression, et sur des rapports de force qui relativisent et hiérarchisent des points de vue distincts, tout en permettant leur maintien.
