Abstract: "Development and Social Change: A Global Perspective describes the dramatic acceleration of the global and political economy in a story that has four parts: colonialism, the development era, the current era of globalization, and global counter-movements for equity and sustainability. The text, filled with case studies, helps students make sense of a complex world in transition and explains how globalization became part of public discourse. It encourages them to see global development as a contested historical project, not simply a story about inevitable "progress." The authors show how development stems from unequal power relationships among nations, often with planet-threatening environmental outcomes.--challenging students to see themselves as global citizens whose consumption decisions have real implications.

Abstract: "Afroeuropeans: Identities, Racism, and Resistances reflects on the tensions, ambiguities, and paradoxes of Blackness in Europe. The book addresses relations of domination and modes of racial exclusion, but also Afro-European interventions in the political, social, cultural, and artistic spheres, and the multiple resistances that have sustained Black bodies in the European continent. At the same time as Black histories, cultures, and social conditions are made invisible in hegemonic accounts in Europe, there is a hypervisibility and presence of Black stereotyping in European popular culture. Black identities have become even more conditioned by new mainstream far-right discourses and the tightening immigrant and refugee policies that affect people of African descent. One of the book's most innovative contributions is the attention it gives to Black South European thought, experiences, and resistance-particularly in the Portuguese context. This constitutes not only a critique Europe's pervasive racism and "color blindness" policies but also makes a significant contribution to a broader understanding of Blackness and racism, extending beyond the U.S. and Northern European contexts. This book is forged in a moment of particularly strong Black intellectual and political vitality. Given the book's intersectional and transdisciplinary approach, it will be an important go-to for students and researchers across the humanities and social sciences, as well as to artists, activists, politicians, and journalists"-- Provided by publisher

Abstract: "Why do humans make monsters, and what do monsters tell us about humanity? Monsters are central to how we think about the human condition. Join award-winning historian of science Dr. Surekha Davies as she reveals how people have defined the human in relation to everything from apes to zombies, and how they invented race, gender, and nations along the way. With rich, evocative storytelling that braids together ancient gods and generative AI, Frankenstein's monster and ET, Humans: A Monstrous History shows how monster-making is about control: it defines who gets to count as normal. In an age when corporations increasingly see people as obstacles to profits, this book traces the long, volatile history of monster-making to chart a better path for the future. The result is a profound, effervescent, empowering retelling of the history of the world for anyone who wants to reverse rising inequality and polarization. This is not a history of monsters, but a history through monsters"

Abstract: "From its Kingston, Jamaica, inception in 1914, women helped define and shape the Black Nationalist and Pan Africanist aims of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Their efforts, made possible in part by UNIA co-founder Amy Ashwood Garvey, helped sustain the largest social justice organization of the twentieth century. In this deeply researched collective biography, Natanya Duncan documents the complexities of UNIA women as active participants in Black nation-building. Women from both sides of the Atlantic joined the UNIA in pursuit of both gender and racial equality, developing a three-tiered activist strategy that Duncan calls 'efficient womanhood': seek equitable partnerships with like-minded persons and organizations, work as peer and intergenerational mentors, and serve as bridge builders between the organization and resources and people in service to their immediate communities and the race at large. Through an impressive and original archive of their self-determination, Duncan presents the stories of Henrietta Vinton Davis, Maymie de Mena, and Laura Kofey as well as groups of UNIA women like the Black Cross Nurses, the Universal African Motor Corp, and the Lucky 9 Club, who circumvented the ideals of their era and created a brand of independent female leadership. The book demonstrates how UNIA women orchestrated and activated the organization from the bottom up, while influencing and informing men and each other. By focusing on how women of the UNIA created an activist framework, Duncan reveals a model of organizing that has endured into the present day"--

Abstract: "From hip-hop moguls and political candidates to talk radio and critically acclaimed films, society communicates that Black girls don't matter and their girlhood is not safe. Alarming statistics on physical and sexual abuse, for instance, reveal the harm Black girls face, yet Black girls' representation in media still heavily relies on our seeing their abuse as an important factor in others' development. In this provocative new book, Aria S. Halliday asserts that the growth of diverse representation in media since 2008 has coincided with an increase in the hatred of Black girls. Halliday uses her astute expertise as a scholar of popular culture, feminist theory, and Black girlhood to expose how we have been complicit in the depiction of Black girls as unwanted and disposable while letting Black girls fend for themselves. She indicts the way media mistreats celebrity Black girls like Malia and Sasha Obama as well as fictional Black girls in popular shows and films like A Wrinkle in Time. Our society's inability to see or understand Black girls as girls makes us culpable in their abuse. In Black Girls and How We Fail Them, a revelatory book for political analysts, hip-hop lovers, pop culture junkies, and parents, Halliday provides the critical perspective we need to create a world that supports, affirms, and loves Black girls. Our future depends on it"--

Abstract: "A literate Muslim born between 1820 and 1830 in present-day Benin, Mahommah Gardo Baquaqua was enslaved in the interior of West Africa and forcibly moved to Brazil in 1845. He escaped from slavery when his master took him to New York City in 1847. Baquaqua then fled to Haiti where he converted to Christianity. When he eventually returned to the United States, he enrolled in New York Central College. Baquaqua published his autobiography in 1854 and traveled to Liverpool, England, with the intention of returning to Africa. He apparently achieved this goal by the early 1860s, when his paper trail disappears. Lovejoy and Bezerra's analysis of this remarkable autobiography - the only known narrative by a former Brazilian slave - illuminates what Baquaqua's home in Africa was like, examines African slavery in mid-nineteenth-century Brazil, and offers an Atlantic perspective on resistance to slavery in the Americas in the era of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850"--

Abstract: "Ana Lucia Araujo's Humans in Shackles is an Atlantic cultural history of slavery in the Americas that sets out to redress the imbalances of existing general histories of slavery by centering on the lived experience of enslaved men and women. In this panoramic book, Araujo provides a humanistic, narrative history that explores in detail the social, cultural, and religious dimensions of the lives of bondspeople. She surveys the trajectories of men, women, and children from Africa to the Americas, examining how European powers reached Africa, how they traded with various African societies, and how Africans were captured, transported to the coast, and taken across the Atlantic Ocean in the hold of slave ships. The book further explores African captives' working conditions in plantations and urban areas; how bondspeople built families despite the abuses they suffered; and how enslaved people congregated, recreated their cultures and religions, and organized rebellions. The book draws not only on a large array of primary sources-travel accounts, pamphlets, newspapers articles, slave ship logs, fugitive slave advertisements, slave narratives, wills, laws, and correspondence in English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish-but it also incorporates visual sources such as engravings, photographs, watercolors, artifacts, monuments, and heritage sites. Humans in Shackles is a testament to the more than twenty years the author has spent studying the history of slavery and the Atlantic slave trade. Ultimately, it argues that the long era in which humans racialized as Black were placed in shackles is indispensable to understanding the construction of the Americas."

Abstract: This edited volume, including contributions from scholars with different areas of specialization, investigates a broad range of methodologies, ideologies and pedagogies focusing on the study of the art of Africa, using theoretical reflections and applications from primitivism to metamodernism. Chapters break the externally imposed boundaries of Africa-related works beyond the conventional fragments of traditional, contemporary and diaspora. The contributions are significantly broad in their methodologies, ideologies and pedagogical coverage; yet, they all address various aspects of African artistic creativity, demonstrating the possibilities for analytical experiments that art history presents to scholars of the discipline today. The Ìwà (character) of each approach is unique; nevertheless, each is useful toward a fuller understanding of African art studies as an independent aspect of art historical research that is a branch or bud of the larger family of art history. The volume respects, highlights and celebrates the distinctiveness of each methodical approach, recognizing its contribution to the overall character or Ìwà of African art studies

Connecting the personal with the public, it helps the reader to develop a deeper understanding of how social contexts and structures create or constrain opportunities for exercise, leisure and sport. Touching on key contemporary themes including diversity, inclusion, non-participation and health inequalities, the book offers new case material and theoretical tools for understanding the relationships between sport, leisure, health and wider society. Abstract: "Between 1600 and 1750 Ottoman Turkish music differentiated itself from an older Persianate art music and developed the genres antecedent to modern Turkish art music. Based on a translation of Demetrius Cantemir's seminal "Book of the Science of Music" from the early eighteenth century, this work is the first to bring together contemporaneous notations, musical treatises, literary sources, travellers' accounts and iconography. These present a synthetic picture of the emergence of Ottoman composed and improvised instrumental music. A detailed comparison of items in the notated Collections of Cantemir and of Bobowski-from fifty years earlier-together with relevant treatises, reveal key aspects of modality, melodic progression and rhythmic structures"--

Abstract: "A comprehensive and critical introduction to understanding the Korean Wave (Hallyu) as a transnational media phenomenon. This book provides an accessible introduction to the Korean Wave - the rapid growth of local cultural industries and the global popularity of Korean popular culture over the past thirty years - providing historical, political, economic, and socio-cultural context to its initial rise and enduring popularity. Jin explores the transnational cultural flows of Hallyu across a variety of products and digital technologies - from television dramas, film, and K-pop to online games, and webtoons - and explains the process of cross-media convergence and the socio-political contexts behind the Hallyu phenomenon. He also explores how overseas fans and audiences advance K-pop fandom as social agents in different geo-cultural contexts. The book concludes by discussing if Hallyu can become a sustainable global popular culture beyond a fan-based regional cultural phenomenon. Each chapter features detailed contemporary case studies and discussion questions to enhance student engagement. This is essential reading for students of Media and Communication, Cultural Studies, Korean Studies and Asian Studies, particularly those taking classes on popular culture and media, media and globalization, Korean popular culture, and East Asian culture."

Abstract: "Half of all 7,000-plus human languages may disappear over the next century and - because many have never been recorded - when they're gone, it will be forever. Ross Perlin, a linguist and co-director of the Endangered Language Alliance, is racing against time to map little-known languages across the most linguistically diverse city in history: contemporary New York. In Language City, Perlin recounts the unique history of immigration that shaped the city, and follows six remarkable yet ordinary speakers of endangered languages deep into their communities to learn how they are maintaining and reviving their languages against overwhelming odds. Perlin also dives deep into their languages, taking us on a fascinating tour of unusual grammars, rare sounds and powerful cultural histories from all around the world. Both remarkable social history and testament to the importance of linguistic diversity, Language City is a joyful and illuminating exploration of a city and the world that made it"--Publisher's description

Abstract: "Perhaps we were too distracted by the pandemic, or the endless financial crises, or the rise of TikTok. But under cover of them all, a new and more exploitative system has been taking hold. Insane sums of money that were supposed to re-float our economies after the crash of 2008 went to big tech instead. With it they funded the construction of their private cloud fiefdoms and privatized the internet. Technofeudalism says Yanis Varoufakis, is the new power that is reshaping our lives and the world, and is the greatest current threat to the liberal individual, to our efforts to avert climate catastrophe--and to democracy itself. Drawing on stories from Greek myth and pop culture, from Homer to Mad Men, Varoufakis explains this revolutionary transformation: how it enslaves our minds, how it rewrites the rules of global power, and, ultimately, what it will take overthrow it."

Abstract: "Social Movement Literature introduces readers to the study of those cultural texts that have come to define modern social movements. Looking at movements such as the US civil rights movement, gay liberation movement, environmental movement, and contemporary movement such as #metoo and Black Lives Matter, this volume focuses not just on the texts that social movements have produced, but also on those that have inspired and been inspired by those movements. As such, Social Movement Literature seeks to address a number of key questions: how do social movements develop and present not just their goals, but also their broader identities, using texts and other media? How are these movement texts received and further disseminated? Are there common features across movement texts? How and why do some of these texts continue to resonate today? By combining both textual and historical approaches to the analysis of social movements, this volume aims to give readers both an understanding of how social movements emerge and why they remain both political and culturally relevant today."

Abstract: Why and how local coffee bars in Italy-those distinctively Italian social and cultural spaces-have been increasingly managed by Chinese baristas since the Great Recession of 2008Italians regard espresso as a quintessentially Italian cultural product-so much so that Italy has applied to add Italian espresso to UNESCO's official list of intangible heritages of humanity. The coffee bar is a cornerstone of Italian urban life, with city residents sipping espresso at more than 100,000 of these local businesses throughout the country. And yet, despite its nationalist bona fides, espresso in Italy is increasingly prepared by Chinese baristas in Chinese-managed coffee bars. In this book, Grazia Ting Deng explores the paradox of "Chinese espresso"-the fact that this most distinctive Italian social and cultural tradition is being preserved by Chinese immigrants and their racially diverse clientele.Deng investigates the conditions, mechanisms, and implications of the rapid spread of Chinese-owned coffee bars in Italy since the Great Recession of 2008. Drawing on her extensive ethnographic research in Bologna, Deng describes an immigrant group that relies on reciprocal and flexible family labor to make coffee, deploying local knowledge gleaned from longtime residents who have come, sometimes resentfully, to regard this arrangement as a new normal. The existence of Chinese espresso represents new features of postmodern and postcolonial urban life in a pluralistic society where immigrants assume traditional roles even as they are regarded as racial others. The story of Chinese baristas and their patrons, Deng argues, transcends the dominant Eurocentric narrative of immigrant-host relations, complicating our understanding of cultural dynamics and racial formation within the shifting demographic realities of the Global North

Abstract: "One century ago, in 1921, as the American colossus was emerging on the world stage, a populist backlash against foreign immigration was reinforced by fears of a global pandemic known as the Spanish flu. The backlash was bipartisan, and "emergency" legislation passed the U.S. Congress overwhelmingly. That decision was strategically myopic, undercutting the source of America's surprisingly sudden strength. Indeed, immigrants and the sons of immigrants filled the ranks of the victorious U.S. Army coming home from Europe after World War One, and it was the sons of immigrants who would fill the ranks in World War Two as well. Only during the Cold War era did America's leaders realize that its isolationist immigration laws were harmful. In 2021, the U.S. is stronger than ever on the world stage, yet ironically finds itself in a situation that mirrors that of 1921: populism combined with a global pandemic. Even as Joe Biden's Democratic Party takes over the reins of the federal government, limits on foreign travel are more extreme than ever. Whole countries are all but blockaded, and the emergency justification for keeping out potentially diseased foreigners in the Covid era will be hard to overcome. People, even enlightened voters in great democracies, are not very good at measuring short-term gains against long-term costs"--

Abstract: "A book that explores the disconnect between the ideals of the Great Awokening and the realities of fixing structural inequality. This book aims to explain how a new elite has risen to prominence and established a social order that is fundamentally premised on exclusion, exploitation and condescension even as its members define themselves in terms of their commitments to uplifting the marginalized and disadvantaged. The book will illustrate how this core tension within the new elite explains a number of trends we've seen, from the Great Awokening to growing political polarization and beyond. We Have Never Been Woke will draw from and build upon al-Gharbi's work over the last six years that has examined the rise of Trump, the crisis of expertise, tensions over 'identity politics' and growing social inequality."

Abstract: "In an era of social media, influencers wield unprecedented power over global consumer decisions. As digital natives increasingly turn to influencers for guidance, the need for comprehensive research on their impact becomes paramount. Brands, aiming to connect with a precisely targeted audience, must grapple with ethical considerations in this rapidly evolving sphere.Global Perspectives on Social Media Influencers and Strategic Business Communication delves into influencer research and practices, exploring their impact on various industries and sectors. This book dissects the motives and characteristics of social media influencers and navigates the terrain of ethical considerations surrounding their collaboration with businesses and organizations. This book covers influencers' effect on brand loyalty, cultural norms, community building, and their role in business management, advertising, and strategic communication. The book dissects the impacts of social media influencers on audience behavior, exploring areas such as brand attitudes, purchase intentions, and the dynamics of parasocial relationships. This book is a valuable resource for businesses, strategic communicators, marketers, scholars, and anyone seeking a profound understanding of the dynamic world of social media influencers."--
Abstract: "This book provides a comprehensive overview of the contemporary research and practices of social media influencers. It also explores innovative methods to identify, assess, and reach out to influencers on a global scale"--

Abstract: "Geologic Life provides a magisterial account of the specific processes by which race and racialization emerged geologically. Building on the core idea first explored in her breakout short book A Billion Black Anthropocenes or None--that race is as much a geological formation as a biological one--Kathryn Yusoff develops a spatial account of racialization based on rifts and plateaus, what she calls "the stratigraphic imagination"; that structured Enlightenment thought and its colonial conceptions of the world. The book provides a deep and detailed reconsideration of core figures (Louis Agassiz, James Hutton, Georges Cuvier, and others) from the emergence of Enlightenment and colonial sciences in the 17th-20th centuries to show how colonial geology (as the classification of the origins of earth and beings) organized, and continues to underpin, racialized accounts of space and time

Abstract: "Aníbal Quijano: Foundational Essays on the Coloniality of Power translates the late Peruvian theorist's most important essays. Trained as a sociologist, Aníbal Quijano is widely considered a foundational figure in the fields of decolonial studies and critical theory. The essays presented in the volume encompass nearly thirty years of Quijano's work, from 1988-2015. The collection not only introduces English-language readers to Quijano's thought; it also provides a fundamentally distinct lens for reading today's world system of power from its origins in the so-called periphery, that is, from Latin America and the Global South. The introduction to the book, written by the volume's editors, Walter D. Mignolo, Rita L. Segato, and Catherine E. Walsh, contextualizes the significance and ongoing influence of Quijano's writing"--

Abstract: "At the heart of Elusive Histories is a long-neglected story of the clandestine journeys of Mozambican migrant laborers and their families to Rhodesia. Drawing from oral histories, court records, archives, newspapers, and popular magazines, the authors chronicle Mozambican migration, work experiences, and settlement in Rhodesia. Thousands of men, women, and children traveled long distances, often on foot, to reach Rhodesia. Starting with a trickle of workers seeking to avoid chibharo, a Mozambican agricultural forced-labor system, the number of migrants peaked in the 1950s. In 1958, the Rhodesian government passed legislation to bar new Mozambican migrants from entering large cities, redirecting them toward agriculture and mining. When Black Rhodesian laborers began to complain about losing jobs to Mozambicans, the restrictions became an outright ban to prevent further migrants from entering the country. Contrary to previous assumptions, Mozambican labor in Rhodesia was not contract labor derived from bilateral negotiations between the Mozambican colonial and Rhodesian governments. In fact, many Mozambicans who came to work and live in Rhodesia arrived as illegal migrants. The book also demystifies the widely held notion that all foreign migrant workers in Rhodesia who spoke Nyanja were Nyasalanders. Because Nyanja is widely spoken at the confluence of Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique, many Mozambicans who came to work in Rhodesia were fluent. Despite the national, racial, and cultural differences and the discrimination in job placement, promotion, and housing, Mozambican migrant laborers creatively adapted and made Rhodesia home for the duration of their lives.

Abstract: "The institutional aspects of reality are clearly part of the much larger and much more diffuse social aspect of the world. In other words, institutional facts are a subset of social facts. It might be useful, however, to start with the larger category, with the idea of a social fact. A simple, noncircular definition of a social fact would be one that utilizes the idea of ontological dependence. We could say that a fact is of a social kind iff it is the kind of fact that ontologically depends on the existence of a multitude of human beings interacting with each other in certain ways. It doesn't mean that a social fact has to be a fact about groups of human beings, as such, or about a particular type of interaction among them. The idea is that a fact is social if and only if it depends, ontologically, on the existence of human interactions"--

Abstract: "Why do women accumulate less wealth than men? Why do marital separations impoverish women while they do not prevent men from becoming wealthy? This groundbreaking work approaches the institution of family from a materialist point of view, breaking with the dominant theory of modern, economically disinterested family relations. It takes seriously the economists, in the wake of Thomas Piketty, who observe a return to property inequality, based on the legacy of capitalism in the twenty-first century. It reconsiders the effectivity of legal changes that profess formal equality between men and women while condoning inequality in practice."--

Abstract: "Hip-hop culture's explosive arrival on the art scene of New York in the boroughs of Queens and the Bronx in the 1970s began to influence all aspects of musical theatre from singing to scenic design. Hip-Hop in Musical Theatre takes an intersectional standpoint to explore hip-hop's influence on musical theatre practice and aesthetics by giving the reader a comprehensive map of musical theatre productions that have been impacted by hip-hop music and culture. Offering insightful briefs on musical theater productions that contain aesthetic, musical and embodied references to the global phenomenon of Hip-hop culture, this volume takes the reader through a virtual tour of hip-hop' s influence on American musical theatre. From early traces of hip-hop's rap scene in the late 1970s that appeared in musicals such as Micki Grant's Tony Award nominated Don't Bother Me I Can't Cope (1973) and Broadway smash hits such as The Wiz (1978) to international juggernauts such as Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton (2015), this introductory book decodes the sights and sounds of Hip-hop culture within the socio-cultural context in which the musicals are produced. Published in the Topics in Musical Theatre series this volume presents fact-filled and insightful summaries of musicals that give the reader a snapshot of the musical and narrative content while highlighting which aspect of the music and culture of Hip-hop informs acting, dancing, singing, design and music in the selected musical while offering insightful analysis on the ways that hip-hop styles and politics have changed the shape of musical theatre practice."--

Abstract: "Composed over a decade and a half and originally delivered to audiences in Europe, Africa and the US, these lectures celebrate African musical creativity by illuminating selected compositional techniques, key influences, and dominant scholarly themes. Chapters on minimalism, iconicity, tonality as a colonizing force, and African pianism are supplemented by a critique of ethnotheory, a capsule history of African rhythm studies. and an invitation to music theorists to consider whether greater encounter with African music might not enhance the work that they do. Framed as an exercise in postcolonial criticism, the work refers to a large body of recorded music from various parts of Africa, provides close readings of a handful of compositions to supplement the more general appreciative commentary, and engages recurring and controversial talking points in contemporary discourses on African music. Written in clear and accessible prose, these self-standing essays are designed to enhance admiration for the animating structures of African music. - (Verlag)

Abstract: "The Invisible Religion is a modern classic of social science. Its influence goes well beyond sociology as it continues to inspire research in such diverse fields as sociology of knowledge, ethnology, theology, sociology of religion and religious studies. In this volume, the author endeavours to answer one of the most important questions regarding religion in modern times: Are Western societies indeed becoming more secular as they modernize? His surprising answer is still part of the ongoing debates about secularization as he argues that rather than a decline of religion, we are witnessing a shift from an older, Church-centered form to another, invisible and still largely unexplored form of religion. Explaining why focusing only on Church when discussing religion is inadequate, this book presents a thorough case for reframing the question of the status of religion in modern life in a way that makes visible forms of religion hitherto unseen, and sketches some aspects of this new form. As such, it will appeal to sociologists with interests in social theory, religion and the secularization thesis"--

Abstract: The story of white masculinity in geek culture through a history of hobby gamingGeek culture has never been more mainstream than it is now, with the ever-increasing popularity of events like Comic Con, transmedia franchising of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, market dominance of video and computer games, and the resurgence of board games such as Settlers of Catan and role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. Yet even while the comic book and hobby shops where the above are consumed today are seeing an influx of BIPOC gamers, they remain overwhelmingly white, male, and heterosexual. The Privilege of Play contends that in order to understand geek identity's exclusionary tendencies, we need to know the history of the overwhelmingly white communities of tabletop gaming hobbyists that preceded it.
Abstract: It begins by looking at how the privileged networks of model railroad hobbyists in the early twentieth century laid a cultural foundation for the scenes that would grow up around war games, role-playing games, and board games in the decades ahead. These early networks of hobbyists were able to thrive because of how their leisure interests and professional ambitions overlapped. Yet despite the personal and professional strides made by individuals in these networks, the networks themselves remained cloistered and homogeneous-the secret playgrounds of white men. Aaron Trammell catalogs how gaming clubs composed of lonely white men living in segregated suburbia in the sixties, seventies and eighties developed strong networks through hobbyist publications and eventually broke into the mainstream. He shows us how early hobbyists considered themselves outsiders, and how the denial of white male privilege they established continues to define the socio-technical space of geek culture today.
Abstract: By considering the historical role of hobbyists in the development of computer technology, game design, and popular media, The Privilege of Play charts a path toward understanding the deeply rooted structural obstacles that have stymied a more inclusive community. The Privilege of Play concludes by considering how digital technology has created the conditions for a new and more diverse generation of geeks to take center stage

Abstract: "As long as feminists have existed, they have been accused of being "killjoys," "buzzkills," "party poopers," and "wet blankets." For having the audacity to insist on a more-just world, feminists are criticized for getting in the way of other people's happiness. In The Feminist Killjoy Handbook, renowned feminist theorist Sara Ahmed reclaims the feminist killjoy-showing how killing joy can be a world-making, radical project. Featuring sharp analysis of literature, film, and influential feminist works, and drawing on her own experiences as a queer feminist scholar-activist of color, in The Feminist Killjoy Handbook Ahmed celebrates the feminist killjoy. Ahmed illuminates how the feminist killjoy is represented in our culture and recovers a black and brown feminist killjoy lineage-from bell hooks to Claudia Rankine, from Audre Lorde to Roxane Gay. With inspiring and insightful killjoy maxims, killjoy truths, and killjoy commitments woven throughout the book, Ahmed offers readers tips on how to survive as a feminist killjoy and illuminates the invaluable lessons the figure offers. Ahmed shows how the feminist killjoy offers a model for cultural criticism, philosophy, and poetry, and, ultimately, how it presents a roadmap for breaking current oppressive social structures and replacing them with more equitable ones. If getting in the way of other people's happiness is what it takes to transform our unjust world for the better, then getting in the way is not counterproductive but absolutely necessary. While the trope of the feminist killjoy has often been used against feminists, in The Feminist Killjoy Handbook, Ahmed transforms the taunt into a call to action. Written with Ahmed's characteristic blend of playfulness and urgency, The Feminist Killjoy Handbook is a love letter to feminist killjoys everywhere and an essential guide to living in, and remaking, this world"--

Abstract: "This work centers on the life and writing of Omar Ibn Said, born in 1770 in a border region between Senegal and Mauritania that played a significant role in Islamic nations. Omar studied for 25 years at an Islamic seminary and was poised to become a leader in the faith, but after being captured by an invading army, he fell into the hands of transatlantic slave traders. He was sold to a plantation owner near Charleston, South Carolina, in 1808. What we know of Omar's life comes largely from a series of brief autobiographical writings and transcriptions, comprising the only known narrative written in Arabic by an enslaved person in North America. In this book, Mbaye Lo and Carl Ernst weave fresh and accurate translations of Omar's writing together with context and interpretation to provide the fullest possible account of this West African Islamic scholar's life and significance"--

Abstract: "Indigenous Research Design is a unique collection that explores the ways researchers conceptualize and carry out projects including the approaches, ethics, methods, and impacts. With a focus on deepening our understanding of Indigenous research design and the ways in which Indigenous theories of research are indivisible from Indigenous peoples' lived experiences and practices, contributors from across the globe discuss how we can rethink conventional approaches to data collection. Elements are discussed within qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research according to Indigenous research worldviews, self-determination, and self-development."--

Abstract: "This book investigates how knowledge about food is developed, disseminated and digested in diverse Western European contexts. Chapters critically examine beliefs about child and elderly nutrition, diabetes, gluten-sensitivity, vitamins and other dietary issues where medical experts, media brokers, scientists and educators promote concepts not only of good eating, but also of health and compliant citizenship. The book provides provocative insights into how food knowledge undergirds political policies, educational practices and nutrition advice." Abstract: "On Instagram, the private work of mothering is turned into a public performance, generating billions of dollars. The message is we're all just a couple of clicks away from a better, more beautiful experience of motherhood. Momfluences are just like us, except they aren't. They are mothers but also marketing strategists, content creators, and advertising executives. Drawing on her own fraught relationship to momfluencer culture, Sara Petersen incorporates pop culture analysis and interviews with prominent momfluencers and experts to explore and glorification of the ideal mama online with both humor and empathy. Momfluenced argues that momfluencers don't simply sell mothers on the benefits of bamoboo diapers; they sell us the dream of motherhood itself, a dream tangled up in whiteness, capitalism, and the heteronormative nuclear family." --

Abstract: A powerful collection of journalism on race, racism and black life and death from one of the nation's leading political voices. 'An outstanding journalist and chronicler.' BERNARDINE EVARISTO 'Fused with truth, power and illumination.' DAVID LAMMY 'Every citizen - and citizen journalist - should have a copy.' LEMN SISSAY 'In short, it is a public service.' NESRINE MALIK For the last three decades Gary Younge has had a ringside seat during the biggest events and with the most significant personalities to impact the black diaspora: accompanying Nelson Mandela on his first election campaign, joining revellers on the southside of Chicago during Obama's victory, entering New Orleans days after hurricane Katrina or interviewing Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Maya Angelou and Stormzy. He has witnessed how much change is possible and the power of systems to thwart those aspirations. Dispatches from the Diaspora is an unrivalled body of work from a unique perspective that takes you to the frontlines and compels you to engage and to 'imagine a world in which you might thrive, for which there is no evidence. And then fight for it.'

Abstract: Through two Colombian case studies, Sanne Weber identifies the ways in which conflict experiences are defined by structures of gender inequality, and how these could be transformed in the post-conflict context. The author reveals that current, apparently gender-sensitive, transitional justice (TJ) and disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) laws and policies ultimately undermine rather than transform gender equality and, consequently, weaken the chances of achieving holistic and durable peace. To overcome this, Weber offers an innovative approach to TJ and DDR that places gendered citizenship as both the starting point and the continued driving force of post-conflict reconstruction.

Abstract: "This book outlines how African language media is affected by politics, technology, culture, and the economy and how this media is creatively produced and appropriated by audiences across cultures and contexts. African language media can be considered as a tool for communication, socialization, and community that defines the various identities of indigenous people in Africa. This book shows how vernacular media outlets including radio and television, as well as native formats such as festivals, rituals and dance, can be used to influence all facets of local peoples' experience and understanding of community. The book also explores the relationship between African language media sources and contemporary issues including the digitalization conundrum, peace and conflict resolution, identity formation, hate speech and fake news. Furthermore, it shows how local media can be used for development communication purposes during health and environmental crises. The book includes cases studies demonstrating the uses, experiences and activities related to various forms of media available in African languages. This book will be of interest to scholars in the field of communication and media studies, health and environmental communication, journalism, African studies and anthropology"--

Abstract: "Drawing upon theories from visual studies, critical visual culture studies, and cognitive psychology, and with a special focus on gender and ethnicity, this book gives students a theoretical foundation for future work as visual communicators. The book takes a closer look at the interwoven character of perception and reception that is present in everyday visual encounters. Chapters present a wide variety of visual examples from art history, digital media, and the images we encounter and use in our daily lives. With the tools to understand how images and text make meaning, students are thus prepared to better communicate through visual media. This book serves as a main or supplementary text for visual communication or visual culture courses"--

Abstract: "Is violent conflict in Africa urbanizing? How do urban protests and civil war intersect? How do narratives, mechanisms and identities of contention move between urban and rural arenas? These questions constitute the basis of investigation and analysis of this unique cross-disciplinary volume. Applying diverging perspectives and methods from political science, anthropology and urban African studies, the book carefully constructs the relational and entangled nature of contemporary forms of contentious politics in Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia"--

Abstract: "In National (un)Belonging: Bengali American Women on Imagining and Contesting Culture and Identity, Roksana Badruddoja focuses on the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, citizenship, and nationalism among contemporary "second-generation" Bengali American women. Badruddoja engages in a yearlong feminist ethnographic study with a nationwide sample of 25 women in the U.S. to poignantly explore perceptions about daily social and cultural practices. Exploring the conceptual and theoretical perspectives of the social, economic, cultural, aesthetic, and political dimensions of transnational migrations, Badruddoja interrogates assimilation to depict the messy nature of diasporic travels and the resulting complexities of diasporic identities. Badruddoja demonstrates racialized identities are often part of a constellation of loyalties that are multiple, contradictory, constantly shifting, and overlapping"

Abstract: The Dravidian model: an introduction -- Conceptualising power in caste society -- Democratising education -- Democratising care -- Broadening growth and democratising capital -- Transforming rural relations -- Popular interventions and urban labour -- fissures, limits and possible futures.
Abstract: "Inter-regional variations in economic and social outcomes across India, one of the fastest growing economies, continue to pose conceptual and policy challenges. States that do well on the growth front lag in human development, while human development in a few other states has not been accompanied by sustained growth in productive sectors. Tamil Nadu in southern India bucks this trend, and hence is seen as a model to be emulated. The state has managed to combine relatively high levels of growth and sustained productive capacities along with human development. Drawing upon fresh data, literature, policy documents and primary fieldwork, this book seeks to explain the social and economic development of Tamil Nadu in terms of populist mobilization rooted in a regional subaltern identity. Dominant policy narratives on inclusive growth assume a sequential logic whereby returns to growth are used to invest in socially inclusive policies. By focusing more on redistribution of access to opportunities in the modern economy than on land, the state has sustained a relatively more inclusive and dynamic growth process. Democratization of economic opportunities has made such broad-based growth possible even as interventions in social sectors reinforce the former. It thus also speaks to the nascent literature on political economy of subnational development trajectories in the global South. Importantly, it contributes to the growing literature on how regional politics and political regimes contribute to the shaping of global development trajectories"--

Abstract: Running from Bondage tells the compelling stories of enslaved women, who comprised one-third of all runaways, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Karen Cook Bell's enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances, while also providing details about what led them to escape. She demonstrates that there were in fact two wars being waged during the Revolutionary Era: a political revolution for independence from Great Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality in which Black women played an active role. Running from Bondage broadens and complicates how we study and teach this momentous event, one that emphasizes the chances taken by these 'Black founding mothers' and the important contributions they made to the cause of liberty

Abstract: Abstract: This volume examines religiosity on university campuses in Sub-Saharan Africa. Focusing on both individuals and organized groups, the contributions open a window onto how religion becomes a factor, affects social interactions, is experienced and mobilized by various actors. It brings together case studies from various disciplinary backgrounds (anthropology, sociology, history, religious studies, literature) and theoretical orientations to illustrate the significance of religiosity in recent developments on university campuses. It pays a particular attention to religion-informed activism and contributes a fresh analysis of processes that are shaping both the experience of being student and the university campus as a moral space. Last but not least, it sheds light onto the ways in which the campus becomes a site of a reformulation of both religiosity and sociality.

Abstract: Since the early days of the internet, there have been questions about how emerging technologies might one day liberate or further harm communities of color that already face structural inequalities of racism. As reliance on computing technologies increases, it is also important to address questions about racial bias in the design of digital platforms, labor inequalities in tech industries, and digital surveillance on Black and Brown communities. This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory and research on race and digital media. Focusing on the experiences of people of color in the United States, it explores the various ways that racism and white supremacy have shaped aspects of our digital world - from the infrastructures and policies that support technological development, to algorithms and the collection of data, to the interfaces that shape engagement. Yet it also reveals how communities of color have deployed digital media in ways that expand the public sphere, contest the status quo, and give voice to creativity and joy.Race and Digital Media provides an essential resource for students of communication, media, technology, and society. It shows how to make sense of our ever-changing digital media landscape in a way that centers the continued impact of institutionalized racism and the potential for anti-racist futures

Abstract: Since 1994, as the ruling party in South Africa, the ANC have become synonymous with and indivisible from the fight against apartheid rule. This has left little space for competing accounts, visions, and political projects to find their appropriate place in the historical narrative. In this innovative book, Toivo Asheeke moves beyond these well-trodden histories, to tell the previously neglected story of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM), a militant revolutionary nationalist wing of the anti-colonial struggle. Using archival sources from four countries and interviews with former veterans of the movement, Asheeke explores the BCM's engagement with guerrilla warfare, community feminism and Black Internationalism. Uncovering the personal and political histories of those who have previously received scant scholarly attention, Asheeke both illuminates the history of Africa's decolonization struggle and that of the wider Cold War

Abstract: "Why hasn't polygamous marriage died out in African cities, as experts once expected it would? Enduring Polygamy considers this question in one of Africa's fastest-growing cities: Bamako, the capital of Mali, where one in four wives is in a polygamous marriage. Using polygamy as a lens through which to survey sweeping changes in urban life, it offers ethnographic and demographic insights into the customs, gender norms and hierarchies, kinship structures, and laws affecting marriage, and situates polygamy within structures of inequality that shape marital options, especially for young Malian women. Through an approach of cultural relativism, the book offers an open-minded but unflinching perspective on a contested form of marriage. Without shying away from questions of patriarchy and women's oppression, it presents polygamy from the everyday vantage points of Bamako residents themselves, allowing readers to make informed judgments about it and to appreciate fully the full spectrum of human cultural diversity"--

Abstract: "In Rescuing Humanity, Willem H. Vanderburg reminds us that we have relied on discipline-based approaches for human knowing, doing, and organizing for less than a century. During this brief period, these approaches have become responsible for both our spectacular successes and most of our social and environmental crises. At their roots is a cultural mutation that includes secular religious attitudes that veil the limits of these approaches, leading to their overvaluation. Because their use, especially in science and technology, is primarily built up with mathematics, living entities and systems can be dealt with only as if their "architecture" or "design" is based on the principle of non-contradiction, which is true only for non-living entities. This distortion explains our many crises. Vanderburg begins to explore the limits of discipline-based approaches, which guides the way toward developing complementary ones capable of transcending these limits. It is no different from a carpenter going beyond the limits of his hammer by reaching for other tools. As we grapple with everything from the impacts of social media, the ongoing climate crisis, and divisive political ideologies, Rescuing Humanity reveals that our civilization must learn to do the equivalent if humans and other living things are to continue making earth a home."--

Abstract: Infrastructures are fundamental means through which societies create spaces, but little is known about the precise ways in which this occurs. How have infrastructures animated certain understandings of space? How do infrastructures stabilize, or undermine, the spatial formats in which we live, which shape our everyday practices and which regulate access to services and resources? And, conversely, how do spaces frame the ways infrastructural provision is organized? How do existing spaces shape infrastructural development and the scope and forms of access to vital services such as transport and water? In this volume, historians and sociologists draw on a range of fascinating case studies and provide compelling answers to these questions. Exploring, among others, the provision of irrigation water in nineteenth-century Los Angeles, the invention of airport transit zones, and the infrastructural practices of homeless people in Berlin, the book demonstrates how the making of spaces through infrastructure is deeply political. Intent on revealing uneven geographies of provision and hierarchies of access, the contributors highlight how infrastructures are products of global entanglements.

Abstract: Scream for Me Africa! examines the hard rock and metal scenes in five African countries: Botswana, Togo, South Africa, Kenya and Ghana. Banchs spent significant time in each country interviewing musicians, producers and fans to create vivid pictures of each of these rarely discussed scenes. This book considers how the subculture of heavy metal is viewed in post-colonial Africa, and how musicians in the continent have stepped forward to make this genre their own. It looks at the continent's blossoming scenes through various themes including hybridity, othering and political tensions.--back cover
