Abstract: In a vast and all-embracing 2007 study of Africa, from the origins of mankind to the AIDS epidemic, John Iliffe refocuses its history on the peopling of an environmentally hostile continent. Africans have been pioneers struggling against disease and nature, and their social, economic and political institutions have been designed to ensure their survival. In the context of medical progress and other twentieth-century innovations, however, the same institutions have bred the most rapid population growth the world has ever seen. Africans: The History of a Continent is thus a single story binding living Africans to their earliest human ancestors. (Verlagsangaben)

Abstract: No previous full-scale study has been undertaken so far to study the polemical writings of the Muslim reformist Muḥammad Rashīd Riḍā (1865-1935) and his associates in his well-known journal al-Manār (The Lighthouse). The book focuses on the dynamics of Muslim understanding of Christianity during the late 19th and the early 20th century in the light of al-Manār's sources of knowledge, and its answers to the social, political and theological aspects of missionary movements in the Muslim World of Riḍā's age. The basis of the analysis encompasses the voluminous publications by Riḍā and other Manārists in his journal. Besides, it makes use of newly-discovered materials, including Riḍā's private papers, and some other remaining personal archives of some of his associates
Abstract: Riḍā's sources of knowledge of the West : with special reference to Christianity -- Riḍā Arab Christians : attitudes towards Syrian Christians and the Egyptian Coptic community -- Al-Manār versus evangelism : Rashīd Riḍā's perceptions of the social and theological aspects of missions -- False allegations or proofs? : Riḍā's formative polemics on Christianity -- In pursuit of a 'true' gospel : Riḍā's Arabic edition of the Gospel of Barnabas -- The art of polemics : Tawfiq Ṣidqī's contributions to al-Manār and Riḍā's use of them -- Recapitulation of ideas : Christianity as reflected in Riḍā's Fatwās.

Abstract: This book radically revises established knowledge in comparative welfare state studies and introduces a new perspective on how religion shaped modern social protection systems. The interplay of societal cleavage structures and electoral rules produced the different political class coalitions sustaining the three welfare regimes of the Western world. In countries with proportional electoral systems the absence or presence of state–church conflicts decided whether class remained the dominant source of coalition building or whether a political logic not exclusively based on socio-economic interests (e.g. religion) was introduced into politics, particularly social policy. The political class-coalitions in countries with majoritarian systems, on the other hand, allowed only for the residual-liberal welfare state to emerge, as in the US or the UK. This book also reconsiders the role of Protestantism. Reformed Protestantism substantially delayed and restricted modern social policy. The Lutheran state churches positively contributed to the introduction of social protection programs.

Abstract: This important textbook provides a critical introduction to the social anthropology of religion, focusing on more recent classical ethnographies. Comprehensive, free of scholastic jargon, engaging, and comparative in approach, it covers all the major religious traditions that have been studied concretely by anthropologists - Shamanism, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Christianity and its relation to African and Melanesian religions and contemporary Neopaganism. Eschewing a thematic approach and treating religion as a social institution and not simply as an ideology or symbolic system, the book follows the dual heritage of social anthropology in combining an interpretative understanding and sociological analysis. The book will appeal to all students of anthropology, whether established scholars or initiates to the discipline, as well as to students of the social sciences and religious studies, and for all those interested in comparative religion. While keeping theory to a minimum, the book focuses on case-studies in the hope this will facilitate scholars to engage in further theoretical work on the phenomenon of religious pluralism in the Diaspora and in answering important questions on how religious pluralism can be conceptualised and which issues need to be addressed in doing so. The material is also useful for comparative studies in the academic study of religion

Abstract: This is the first published account of the role played by ideas of honour in African history from the fourteenth century to the present day. It argues that appreciation of these idesas is essential to an understandin gog part and present African behaviour. Before Euroapean conquest, many African men cultivated heroic honour , others admired the civic virtues of the partiriarchal householde, and women honoured on anther for industry, endurance, and devation to their families. These caluies both conglicted and blende with Islamic and Christain teachings. Colonial conqiest fragmented heroi cultures, bur inherited ideas of hnour found new expression in reginetal loyalty, respectability, professionalism, workin-class masculinity, the changing gender relationsships of the colonial order, and the nationalis movements that overthrew the old order. Today, the same inherited notions obstruct democracy, inspire resistance to tyranny, anmd motivate the defance of dignity in the face od AIDS.
