Abstract: In the wake of WWI, religious identity and practice became tools for leaders to appropriate as instruments to define national belonging, often to the detriment of those outside the faith tradition. This book places ethnonationalism - a particular articulation of nationalism based upon an imagined ethnic community - at the centre of its analysis.

Abstract: This book analyzes, both theoretically and empirically, how diverse social and political identities such as ethnicity, culture, religion and gender can tackle risks such as violence, conflicts, and pandemics from the perspective of security. It is ambitious and valuable book analyzing how to confront political, social and international communitys risks with norms and institutional reforms within the framework of neoliberal global competition. (--Professor Kumiko Haba, Aoyama Gakuin University and former Vice-President of Internationals Studies Association (ISA)) How do our experiences of identity shape our experience of risk in a rapidly changing, and increasingly insecure world? These are some of the critical questions that the book provides through exciting and vital insights for a more sustainable, secure future.
Abstract: (--Professor Bronwyn Hayward, MNZM, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, Member of Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change) This volume explores the complex interrelation between risk, identity and conflict and focuses specifically on ethnicity, religion and gender as modes of identity that are often associated with conflict in the contemporary world. It draws on theoretical perspectives as well as pays special attention to analysis of diverse case studies from Africa, Middle East, Europe, East and Southeast Asia and Latin America. Using various analytical tools and methodologies, it provides unique narratives of local and regional social risk factors and security complexities. The relationship between risk and security is multidimensional and perpetually changing, and lends itself to multiple interpretations.
Abstract: This publication provides a new ground for theoretical and policy debates to unlock innovative understanding of risk through analyses of identity as a significant factor in conflict in the world today. At the same time, it explores ways to address such conflicts in a more people-centered, empowering and sustainable way. Abstract: This book investigates the changes in ethnicity in contemporary China by examining the Yi in Liangshan. With a particular focus on cadres, a seemingly highly politicized group, this book tries to contribute to the discussion of ethnopolitics in China and the politicization of ethnicity. This study categorizes cadres into three generations and discovers that for the veteran echelon ethnicity is related to an emotional expression, for the second generation it is more about a political discourse and competitions, and for the third generation it takes the form of symbolic ethnicity that resonates in everyday life. Changing ethnicity of Yi is a miniature portrayal of the social development in China and demonstrates the interplay between ethnicity and ethnopolitics and how these interactions are expressed in people’s everyday life. The valuable context offered in this book for discussions about ethnicity in contemporary China will be of interest to China scholars, ethnologists, and political scientists. Zhitian Guo is a lecturer in Central China Normal University, and her main areas of research interests are ethnicity, and cultural sociology. She currently hosts and participates in a number of projects in poverty reduction. Her current interest lies in examining how ethnic populations respond to the economic, political and cultural changes in recent campaigns
