Abstract: "While early Buddhists hailed their religion's founder for forging a path to enlightenment, they also exalted him as the paragon of masculinity. According to Buddhist scriptures, the Buddha's body boasts thirty-two physical features, including lion-like jaws, thighs like a royal stag, broad shoulders, and a deep, resonant voice, that distinguish him from regular men. As Buddhism spread throughout Asia and around the world, the Buddha remained an exemplary man, but Buddhists in other times and places developed their own understandings of what it meant to be masculine. Buddhist Masculinities brings together essays that explore the variety and diversity of Buddhist masculinities, from early India to the contemporary United States, and from bodhisattva-kings to martial monks. The contributors deploy the methods of religious studies, anthropology, art history, textual-historical studies, and cultural studies to explore texts, images, films, media, and embodiments of masculinity across the Buddhist world, past and present. Buddhist Masculinities turns scholarly attention to normative forms of masculinity that usually go unmarked and unstudied because they are "normal," and illuminates the religious and cultural processes that construct normative conceptions of masculinities in Buddhism"--

Abstract: "Buddhist temples help form the core of Buddhist practice as sacred spaces. They represent the cosmology of Buddhism and contain images of the Buddha, bodhisattvas, and other deities for worship, and, in associated monasteries, offer space for monks or nuns to live and practice Buddhist discipline. However, temples also provide locations for interactions between state and religion, particularly given that Buddhist teachings generally prohibit clerics from laboring and thus temples rely on the laity and secular authorities for support. Since arriving in China, Buddhism has been variously tolerated, patronized, and crushed by the power of the state. Today, the Chinese state permits religious activity only in the physical space of temples (officially known as "religious activity sites"). In The Space of Religion, Yoshiko Ashiwa and David L. Wank take readers inside the Nanputuo Temple in Xiamen City in Fujian Province of southeastern China in order to explore the relationship between Buddhism and the Chinese state. Nanputuo was a center of modernizing Buddhism in the early twentieth century and a leader of Buddhism's revival after the Cultural Revolution. Based on three decades of ethnographic and documentary research, Ashiwa and Wank tell the story of Nanputuo across a sweep of Chinese history that has seen rapid economic growth and social change. In doing so, they argue that the Chinese state and Buddhism have each adapted to the necessity of the other, and that the success of these adaptations can be seen in the way that the revival of the Buddhist temple has been inextricably intertwined with the growing Chinese market economy"--

Abstract: "If anyone still questions the power of visual images to propel political action, the constant stream of videos circulating on social media-police killings of Black men and women, prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp, celebrating participants in the January 2021 Capitol uprising-have captured the attention of a nation. But exactly what those videos purport to show is often a matter of dispute. Interpretation is in the eyes and mind of the beholder. Deep disagreement to the point of physical violence both reflects the contested events these videos depict and threatens to further entrench political and social divisions. Visual images amplify, accelerate, and even generate vastly different storylines; they show us who and what we are. Whether we can or should believe what we see in visual media is a quandary as old as media itself. Because what we think we see "moves" us-emotionally and ethically-the stakes have always been high. Those stakes are, if anything, even higher now given the impact of our visually saturated media landscape, created by the confluence of digital technologies, smart phones equipped with digital cameras, and social-media platforms. Seeing and Believing focuses on the challenges and opportunities that this complex media landscape presents to us. It examines how these technologies are deliberately designed to influence what we see and how we interpret it. Seemingly godlike-all-seeing-in its reach and persuasive power, we underestimate our own power to resist. Untangling the often unconscious and unacknowledged normative cultural biases that have shaped the media ecosystem (marked by what philosopher George Yancy calls "the white gaze") and learning to see, think, feel, believe, and act differently can be greatly assisted by viewing our worship of technology as a theology and dismantling it with the tools of theology itself"--

Abstract: "The United States is in the midst of a religious revolution. Or, perhaps it is better to say a non-religious revolution. Around a quarter of US adults now say they have no religion. The great majority of these religious "nones" also say that they used to belong to a religion but no longer do. These are the nonverts: think "converts," but from having religion to having none. Even on the most conservative of estimates, there are currently about 59 million of them in the United States. Nonverts explores who they are, and why they joined the rising tide of the ex-religious. It draws on dozens of interviews, original analysis of high-quality survey data, and a wealth of cutting-edge studies, to present an entertaining and insightful exploration of America's ex-religious landscape. While American religion is not going to die out any time soon, ex-Christian America is a growing presence in national life. America's religious revolution is not just a religious revolution : it is catalyzing a profound social, cultural, moral, and political impact"--

Abstract: How do we understand religious spaces? What is their role or function within specific religious traditions or with respect to religious experience? This handbook brings together thirty-seven authors who address these questions using a range of methods to analyse specific spaces or types of spaces around the world and across time. Their methods are grounded in many disciplines: religious studies and religion, anthropology, archaeology, architectural history and architecture, cultural and religious history, sociology, gender and women's studies, geography, and political science, resulting in a distinctly interdisciplinary collection.

Abstract: "The links between Buddhism and medicine have lately received much attention in English-language academic, scientific, and popular media alike thanks to the increasing visibility of meditation, but all of these discussions have thus far failed to contextualize these developments within a larger historical framework. In fact, it turns out that the history of Buddhist engagement with various aspects of medicine is as old as the history of Buddhism itself. In all periods and all locations across the world, Buddhism has provided individuals with intellectual tools to frame and understand illness, has shaped health-seeking behaviors in conscious and unconscious ways, and has offered a range of popular therapies and institutional structures for dealing with the sick. This history is complex, involving multiple intertwining threads. Health and illness were common concerns in the earliest Buddhist texts, which drew heavily on existing medical traditions circulating in ancient India. Carried across geographic, cultural, and linguistic boundaries, these ideas and practices became an integral part of the spread of the religion across Asia in the ancient and medieval periods. Transregionally transmitted Buddhist knowledge formed the nucleus for the development of local forms of traditional medicine that still thrive today in many parts of Asia. The dynamics of reception in each of the cultures that received the Buddhist transmission were different and involved complex processes of translation that were always embedded in local social and political contexts. Consequently, particular configurations of Buddhist healing differ markedly from culture to culture. This diversity notwithstanding, certain global patterns have persisted in the history of Buddhist medicine. Many of the key texts in the medical canons of cultures across Asia are attributed to a handful of Buddhist figures. Today, Buddhist traditions, healers, and institutions continue to exert a tangible impact on medical care in societies both inside and outside Asia"--

Abstract: This edited volume represents a snapshot the current state cognitive science of religion with contributions from many well-established contributors to the field as well as a few newcomers. The first section broadly sets the historical and theoretical stage. Its three chapters introduce readers to the historical, theoretical, and methodological foundations of CSR. Next, rather than treating "religion" as a whole, the topical space is divided into religious concepts, actions, objects, and experiences. With these pieces in place, authors in the subsequent section consider how various components combine to form religious systems, and conditions under which religious systems change or fail. Several chapters offer comparisons between cognitive science of religion and neighboring efforts.

Abstract: "Evangelicalism is one of the most popular and diverse religious movements in the world today. Evangelicals can be found on every continent and among nearly all Christian denominations. The origin of this group of people has been traced to the turn of the eighteenth century, with roots in the Puritan and Pietist movements in England and Germany. The earliest evangelicals could be found among Anglicans, Baptists, Congregationalists, Methodists, Moravians, and Presbyterians throughout North America, Britain, and Western Europe, and included some of the foremost names of the age, such as Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, and George Whitefield. Early evangelicals were abolitionists, historians, hymn writers, missionaries, philanthropists, poets, preachers, and theologians. They participated in the major cultural and intellectual currents of the day, and founded institutions of higher education not limited to Dartmouth College, Brown University, and Princeton University. The Oxford Handbook of Early Evangelicalism provides the most authoritative and comprehensive overview of the significant figures and religious communities associated with early evangelicalism within the contextual and cultural environment of the long eighteenth century, with essays written by the world's leading experts in the field of eighteenth-century studies"--

Abstract: "The Record of Buddhist Kingdoms is a classic travelogue that records the Chinese monk Faxian's journey in the early fifth century CE to Buddhist sites in Central and South Asia in search of sacred texts. In the nineteenth century, it traveled west to France, becoming in translation the first scholarly book about "Buddhist Asia," a recent invention of Europe. This text fascinated European academic Orientalists and was avidly studied by Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche. The book went on to make a return journey east: it was reintroduced to Inner Asia in an 1850s translation into Mongolian, after which it was rendered into Tibetan in 1917. Amid decades of upheaval, the text was read and reinterpreted by Siberian, Mongolian, and Tibetan scholars and Buddhist monks. Matthew W. King offers a groundbreaking account of the transnational literary, social, and political history of the circulation, translation, and interpretation of Faxian's Record. He reads its many journeys at multiple levels, contrasting the textual and interpretative traditions of the European academy and the Inner Asian monastery. King shows how the text provided Inner Asian readers with new historical resources to make sense of their histories as well as their own times, in the process developing an Asian historiography independently of Western influence. Reconstructing this circulatory history and featuring annotated translations, In the Forest of the Blind models decolonizing methods and approaches for Buddhist studies and Asian humanities"--

Abstract: "This book offers fresh theoretical, methodological and empirical analyses of the relation between religion and the city in the South Asian context. Uniting the historical with the contemporary by looking at the medieval and early modern links between religious faith and urban settlement, the book brings together a series of focused studies of the mixed and multiple practices and spatial negotiations of religion in the South Asian city. It looks at the various ways in which contemporary religious practice affects urban everyday life, commerce, craft, infrastructure, cultural forms, art, music and architecture. Chapters draw upon original empirical study and research to analyse the foundational, structural, material and cultural connections between religious practice and urban formations or flows. The book argues that Indian cities are not 'postsecular' in the sense that the term is currently used in the modern West, but that there has been, rather, a deep, even foundational link between religion and urbanism, producing different versions of urban modernity. Questions of caste, gender, community, intersectional entanglements, physical proximity, private or public ritual, processions and prayer, economic and political factors, material objects, and changes in the built environment, are all taken into consideration, and the book offers an interdisciplinary analysis of different historical periods, different cities, and different types of religious practice. Filling a gap in the literature by discussing a diversity of settings and faiths, the book will be of interest to scholars on South Asian history, sociology, literary analysis, urban studies and cultural studies

Abstract: The phenomenon of South Korean Christianity is, in a word, remarkable. In less than 250 years, 29% of South Korea's population adheres to Christianity, a staggering 71% of Korean Americans identify as Christian, and the powerful zeal of Korean Christians to spread the Gospel's influence in South Korea already overshadows other established religious groups (i.e. Buddhism, Confucianism). This handbook offers a comprehensive overview on how the Bible has been used by faith communities in Korea and the Korean diaspora over two centuries.
Abstract: "Korean Christianity is renowned for its rapid growth and conservative theological orientation. This phenomenon is inextricably tied to Korean appropriation of the Bible in their religio-cultural and socio-political context since the 18th century. Less understood, however, is the complex tapestry of Korean biblical interpretation that emerged from being missionized, colonized, internally divided, and incorporated into global norms. These countervailing forces proffer a distinctive Korean-ness of biblical interpretation. On the one hand, it tracks closely the influence of conservative western missionaries. On the other hand, it reflects God's liberating intervention for Koreans and the Korean diaspora. Both of these movements respond to and move beyond distinct histories of oppression. This introduction coheres twenty-four papers by grouping them into four waves of reciprocal interpretive encounters shaping Korean appropriation of the Bible and Christian practices. While some conservatively align with received western orthodoxy, others embrace a sense of complementarity that informs the spectrum of Korean Christian thought and practice, the long-standing religious traditions of Korea, the diversity of Korea's global diaspora, and the learning of non-Koreans who are attentive to the impact of the Bible in Korea"--

Abstract: The study of the reciprocal relationship between the Bible and popular culture has blossomed in the past few decades, and the time seems ripe for a broadly-conceived work that assesses the current state of the field, offers examples of work in that field, and suggests future directions for further study. This handbook includes a wide range of topics organised under several broad themes, including biblical characters (such as Adam, Eve, David and Jesus) and themes (like Creation, Hell, and Apocalyptic) in popular culture; the Bible in popular cultural genres (for example, film, comics, and Jazz); and 'lived' examples (such as museums and theme parks)

Abstract: How do religious, ethnic, and national identities interact in religiously homogenous ethnic conflicts? Is it possible for religion to act as a resolution tool in such conflicts? Why? Why not? In search for answers to these questions, 'Under the Banner of Islam' focuses on the ambivalent role Sunni Islam has played in Turkey's Kurdish conflict - both as a conflict-resolution tool and as a tool of resistance - in the last two decades. Relying mainly on participant observation in Civil Friday Prayers and 62 interviews conducted in three different cities in Turkey (Istanbul and the majority - Kurdish Diyarbakir and Batman) between June 2012 and June 2013, it demonstrates that Sunni Islam has had a very limited impact as a conflict-resolution tool in Turkey.

Abstract: Visiting five continents and covering 220 years, our journey into modern Jewish childhood begins with birth and ends at the time of bar or bat mitzvah. Jewish children, their history and their images, are described by scholars from the fields of demography, history, linguistics, film studies, literature, religious studies, and psychology. Among the questions they probe are: How did Jewish children experience immigration? What did they contribute to modern ethnic and national Jewish cultures? What was their fate during times of war? In the aftermath of war, how did they go about rebuilding their lives, and how did they recollect and interpret the events of their interrupted childhood?

Abstract: Jewish culture places a great deal of emphasis on texts and their means of transmission. At various points in Jewish history, the primary mode of transmission has changed in response to political, geographical, technological, and cultural shifts. Contemporary textual transmission in Jewish culture has been influenced by secularization, the return to Hebrew and the emergence of modern Yiddish, and the new centers of Jewish life in the United States and in Israel, as well as by advancements in print technology and the invention of the Internet. This volume deals with various aspects of textual transmission in Jewish culture in the last two centuries.

Blending interview data with a detailed historical institutional analysis that goes back as early as the nineteenth century, it argues that the strength of Turkish and Kurdish nationalisms, the symbiotic relationship between Turkey's religious and political fields, religious elites' varying conceptualizations of religious and ethnic identities, and the recent political developments in the region (particularly the establishment of an autonomous Kurdish region, Rojava, in Syria) have all contributed to this outcome. The resulting narrative is not only a record of religion, ethnicity, and nationalism in Turkey's Kurdish conflict, but also an investigation of how ethnic and religious identities are negotiated in conflict resolution and how symbolic boundaries are drawn in ethnic conflict zones"--

Abstract: Jonathan Fox and Lev Topor provide a new and innovative approach to answering the age-old question of why people discriminate against Jews. They examine anti-Jewish discrimination using a two-pronged approach. First, they combine and integrate ideas and theories from classic studies of anti-Semitism with social science theories on the causes of discrimination. Second, they use previously unavailable data on discrimination against Jews in 76 countries with significant Jewish minority populations to analyse the patterns and causes of discrimination.

Abstract: The Book of Revelation holds a special fascination for both scholars and the general public. The book has generated widely differing interpretations, yet Revelation has surprisingly not been the focus of many single-volume reference works. The Oxford Handbook of the Book of Revelation fills a need in the study of this controversial book. Thirty essays by leading scholars from around the world orient readers to the major currents in the study of Revelation. Divided into five sections-Literary Features, Social Setting, Theology and Ethics, History of Reception and Influence, and Currents in Interpretation-the essays identify the major lines of interpretation that have shaped discussion of these topics, and then work through the aspects of those topics that are most significant and hold greatest promise for future research

Abstract: Before Harriet Tubman or Martin Luther King, Jr. were identified with Moses, African Americans linked those who challenged racial oppression in America with Samson. In Black Samson: The Untold Story of an American Icon, Nyasha Junior and Jeremy Schipper investigate legal documents, narratives by enslaved persons, speeches, sermons, periodicals, poetry, fiction, and visual arts to tell the unlikely story of how a flawed biblical hero became an iconic figure in America's racial history. Along the way, Schipper and Junior engage the work of African American luminaries, including Fredrick Douglass, James Baldwin, Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton, and many others. From stories of slave rebellions to the Black Power movement, invoking the biblical character of Samson became a powerful way for African Americans to voice strategies and opinions about many race-related issues.

Abstract: 'Hybrid Hate' studies the conflation of anti-Semitism and anti-black racism. As objects of racism, Jews and blacks have been linked together for centuries as peoples apart from the general run of humanity. In this text, Tudor Parfitt investigates the development of anti-Semitism, anti-black racism, and race theory in the West from the Renaissance to the Second World War

Abstract: "From their domestication to their taboo, the role of pigs in the ancient Near East is one of the most complicated topics in archaeology. Rejecting monocausal explanations, this book adopts an evolutionary approach and uses zooarchaeology and texts to unravel the cultural significance of swine from the Paleolithic to today. Five major themes emerge: The domestication of the pig from wild boar in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, the unique roles that pigs developed in agricultural economies before and after the development of complex societies, the raising of swine in cities, the shifting ritual roles of pigs, and the formation and development of the pork taboo in Judaism and, later, Islam. The development of this taboo has inspired much academic debate. I argue that the well-known taboo described in Leviticus reflects the intention of the Biblical writers to develop an image of a glorious pastoral ancestry for a heroic Israelite past, something they achieved by tying together existing food traditions. These included a taboo on pigs, which was developed early in the Iron Age during conflicts between Israelites and Philistines and was revitalized by the Biblical writers. The taboo persisted and mutated, gaining strength over the next two and a half millennia. In particular, the pig taboo became a point of contention in the ethno-political struggles between Jewish and Greco-Roman cultures in the Levant. Ultimately, it was this continued evolution within the context of ethnic and religious politics that gave the pig taboo the strength it has today"--

Abstract: "In many contemporary and popular forms of religious practice, digital technology and the spiritual are inseparable. Ranging from streaming broadcasts of spiritual possessions to screenings of mass prayer conferences in stadiums, spirits and divinities now have new forms in which they can materialise. By offering the notion of 'digital spirits', this book critically attends to the intersections of digital media and spiritual beings. It also puts forward a new performative perspective on how they interact. Taking cues from the work of Stewart Hoover and Heidi Campbell, among others, the book begins with an outline of the current debates around religion, performance and digital media. It then moves on to examine how mediality and religion, where embodied practices are carried out alongside virtual practices, work together in contemporary Asia. These case studies focus on lived religious practices in combination with various forms of media, and so help demonstrate that digital technology in particular reveals the layered processes of spirituality in practice. Gods and divinities have always relied on media to manifest, and this book is a fascinating exploration of how digital media has continued that tradition and taken it in new directions. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars of religious studies, digital media and performance studies"--

Abstract: "This book proposes that late Ḥanafī legal scholarship in the early modern period secured a role for the Ottoman sultanic authority in the process of lawmaking. It finds the reigning arguments for an epistemic divorce between the domain of Islamic law and the authority of the Ottoman state untenable. This study demonstrates that Ḥanafī jurists sustained and expanded Ottoman sultanic authority through careful reformulations of their own school and their engagement with new notions of governance embraced by the Ottomans. This late articulation of the Ḥanafī legal tradition is not only essential to the understanding of the movement to codify Islamic jurisprudence in the late 19th century CE, and the role of the sultan in these transformations, but also to the sketching of looming contentious issues with regard to legitimate governance, lawmaking, and the future of the in modern sari'ah legal jurisdictions in majority Muslim countries"--

Abstract: "The links between Buddhism and health have lately received much attention in English-language academic, scientific, and popular media alike thanks to the increasing visibility of Tibetan meditation techniques in particular, but all of these discussions have thus far failed to contextualize these developments within a larger global framework. A companion to 'Buddhism and medicine: an anthology of premodern sources', this work presents a collection of modern and contemporary texts and conversations from across the Buddhist world dealing with the multifaceted relationship between Buddhism and medicine. More than 40 preeminent scholars and translators in the fields of religious studies and history of medicine focus on texts, global in scope, from the modern and contemporary periods (roughly 1600 to the present). This volume will follow the same format as the first anthology. A 500-1000-word introduction to each translation gives an overview of its historical and cultural context as well as its unique features and provides a list of sources for further reading. The editor's introduction provides a contextual overview as well as a brief summary of the state of the field, and a helpful glossary of key terms is provided for nonspecialists. The book is organized thematically, with a geographical appendix to facilitate navigating the contents. Special attention is given to patently modern themes such as colonialism, science, globalization, and ruptures with tradition. The broad scope of selections concerns Buddhism and healing in modern Asia and throughout the world, including the contemporary US, Europe, and Latin America"--

Abstract: "While often the subject of heated debates, the Muslim Brotherhood in the West remains a mysterious entity. Scholars, security officials, journalists and policymakers disagree on virtually every aspect of the issue, starting with the most basic questions: what the Brotherhood in the West is, who belongs to it, how one joins it, how it operates, how it finances itself---and, in some cases, on whether it even exists. In this book, Lorenzo Vidino uses the stories of individuals who joined and later left Western outfits of the Muslim Brotherhood in order to understanding the inner workings of this group and the tactics it uses to recruit and retain members. The Muslim Brotherhood may be only one of many extremist organizations trying to gain a foothold in the West, but Vidino's unprecedented access and understanding of the group's everyday activities and motivations gives him an opportunity to explore the underlying mechanisms found in all sorts of terrorist organizations"--

Abstract: "The nation-state is for the most part the product of a European mentalité. What happens when it is exported, along with colonialism, to other parts of the world? What happens in China when it encounters--either through force or by willing appropriation--European categories of nation and state, along with their attendant formulations concerning science, rationality, politics, and economics, and their accompanying categories such as religion, the secular, the sacred, human rights, and freedom? How does an imperium become a nation? The central tenet of this book is that nation-states are the results of mythos and sanctified violence. Using government texts including China's constitution (which describes its sovereign domain as "sacred territory") and focusing on citizenship, religion, and territory, Walsh argues that the state sacralizes the nation and that it is this notion of the sacred, the inviolate, that frames and sustains nation-state building. It is used to justify territorial integrity and state sovereignty; with its deep religious underpinnings it shapes citizens of the state and makes them members of the nation. Sacrality, therefore, is a constitutive part of modern China, manifested in its constitution and how it engages the world"--

Abstract: China’s constitution explicitly refers to its sovereign domain as "sacred territory." Why does an avowedly secular state make such a claim, and what does this suggest about the relations between religion and the nation-state? Focusing primarily on China, Stating the Sacred offers a novel approach to nation-state formation, arguing that its most critical element is how the state sacralizes the nation.Michael J. Walsh explores the religious and political dimensions of Chinese state ideology, making the case that the sacred is a constitutive part of modern China. He examines the structural connection among texts (constitutions, legal codes, national histories), ostensibly universal and normative categories (race, religion, citizenship, freedom, human rights), and territoriality (the integrity of sovereignty and control over resources and people), showing how they are bound together by the sacred. Considering a variety of what he refers to as theopolitical techniques, Walsh argues that nation-states undertake sacralization in order to legitimate the violence of establishing and expanding their sovereignty. Ultimately, territorialization is a form of sacralization, and the foundational role of the sacred makes all nation-states religious states. Stating the Sacred offers new ways of understanding China’s approach to legality, control of the populace, religious freedom, human rights, and the structuring of international relations, and it raises existential questions about the fundamental nature of the nation-state

Abstract: Salafism is a fundamentalist Sunni vision of Islam. Growing in popularity in many countries, it seeks the purification of Islamic culture and religious renewal through a 'de-militantization' of the Islamic corpus. This text examines Salafism in France and looks at how this movement spread from the Gulf to Western countries.
