    Kurzfassung: First published in 1993. How is it possible for the three tiny Baltic republics to gain their freedom from the Soviet Union, without a single shot being fired or a single stone thrown at the oppressor? The topic of this book is the implosion of the Soviet empire. It tells the parallel stories of how the three Baltic republics of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania struggled successfully to gain their freedom, and how the policies pursued by Mikhail Gorbachev served to mobilize and politicize Baltic demands. Particular emphasis is placed on unintended consequences that resulted from repeated interventions by Moscow. The authors develop a loose theoretic framework for the examination of this critical struggle. The study starts by developing the analytical tools and then proceeds to outline, as background, the most salient features of Gorbachev's reform programme and of the history of the Baltic States. The core of the analysis is then presented in three chapters, devoted to three consecutive stages in the game. The first shows how strategies on both sides were initially formulated in consensus. In the second it is shown how consensus transformed into pure conflict, and in the third all actors are seeking to escape general collapse. The main conclusion points at the absence of 'politics' in the Soviet System as a main cause of its self-destruction.

    Kurzfassung: "Do women have a history? Did women have a renaissance? These were provocative questions when they were raised in the heyday of women's studies in the 1970s. But how relevant does gender remain to premodern history in the twenty-first century? This book considers this question in eight new case studies that span the European continent from 1400 to 1800. An introductory essay examines the category of gender in historiography and specifically within premodern historiography, as well as the issue of source material for historians of the period. The eight individual essays seek to examine gender in relation to emerging fields and theoretical considerations, as well as how premodern history contributes to traditional concepts and theories within women's and gender studies, such as patriarchy"--

    Kurzfassung: "The true value of this work, it is firmly believed, rests in its 'firstness,' and in its heuristic effects. Thus, the ultimate conclusions and implications are yet to be drawn." It was with these words that I concluded my book Russian Youth - Law, Deviance, and the Pursuit of Freedom in 1995. So, here we are now, some 20+ years hence. What can be said -- what can I say -- about any further and "ultimate" conclusions and implications? In the generation that has passed, what have we learned about the rule of law, legality, legal reasoning, and deviance in Russia? And what about the general subject of legal socialization - how young people learn about rules, norms and laws; what their attitudes about rules and laws are; and, if and whether this knowledge and these attitudes shape their behavior? These were all areas that were the subjects of Russian Youth. Before venturing into what can now be said about these various topics - which is a fair amount - let me mention at the outset what I cannot say. Russian Youth was built around two empirical studies - surveys of youth - conducted first in the period 1987-1990, and then subsequently in 1992. Both American and Russian young persons were included in these surveys"--
