Abstract: "Emerging Technologies / Life at the Edge of the Future invites us to think forward from our present moment of planetary, public and everyday crisis, through the prism of emerging technologies. It calls for a new ethical, responsible and equitable path towards possible futures, curated through in-depth engagement with and across experiential, environmental and technological possibilities. It tackles three of the most significant challenges for contemporary society by asking: how emerging technologies are implicated in the sites of everyday lives; what is the place of emerging technologies in an evolving world in crisis; and how might we better imagine and shape ethical, equitable and responsible futures. The book interweaves three narratives, each of which advances three sets of concerns for our societal futures: 'Emergence', which addresses futures and uncertainty, trust and anxiety, hope and desire; 'Worlds', which addresses data, air and energy; and 'Technologies', which addresses future mobilities, future homes, and the future of work. Not simply a critical study of emerging technologies, this book is also an approach to thinking and practice in times of global crisis which plays out a mode of future-focused scholarship and practice for the first half of the twenty first century"--...

Abstract: "This book examines emerging automated technologies and systems and the increasingly prominent roles that each plays in our lives and our imagined futures. It asks how technological futures are being constituted and the roles anthropologists can play in their making; how anthropologists engage with emerging technologies within their fieldwork contexts in research which seeks to influence future design; how to create critical and interventional approaches to technology design and innovation; and how a critical anthropology of the way that emerging technologies are experienced in everyday life circumstances offers new insights for future making practices. In pursuing these questions, this book respond to a call for new anthropologies that respond to the current and emerging technological environments in which we live, environments for which thinking critically about the possible, plausible, and impossible futures are no longer sufficient. Taking the next step, this book asserts that anthropology must now propose alternative ways, rooted in ethnography, to approach and engage with what is coming and to contest dominant narratives of industry, policy and government, and to respond to our contemporary context through a public, vocal and interventional approach"--

Abstract: "Making Homes: Anthropology and Design is a strong addition to the emerging field of design anthropology. Based on the latest scholarship and practice in the social sciences as well as design, this interdisciplinary text introduces a new design ethnography which offers unique and original approaches to research and intervention in the home. Presenting a coherent theoretical and methodological framework for both ethnographers and designers, the authors examine 'hot' topics - ranging from movements and mobilities to im/material environments, to digital culture - and confront the challenges of a research and design environment which seeks to bring about the changes required for a sustainable, resilient, 'safe', and comfortable future. Written by leading experts in the field, the book draws on real-life examples from a wide range of international projects developed by the authors, other researchers, and designers. Illustrations throughout help to convey the methods and research visually. Readers will also have access to a related website which follows the authors' ongoing research and includes video and written narrative examples of ethnographic research in the home. Abstract: "Uncertainty is increasingly central to scholarship, research and practice across design, social science and humanities disciplines. Both theoretical concepts and empirical investigations of uncertainty and possibility are emerging as scholars and practitioners seek news ways to understand and intervene in a world of crisis with creativity, hope and speculation. This ground-breaking book offers new perspectives on the central issues of uncertainty and possibility and identifies new research methods which take advantage of disruptive and experimental techniques. Advancing a practical agenda for future making, it reveals how uncertainty can be engaged as a generative 'technology' for understanding, researching and intervening in the world. Drawing on key themes in creative methodologies - making, essaying, inhabiting, gathering - the eight chapters explore contemporary sites of practice, such as maker spaces and technology design, the imaginaries of architectural design, the temporalities of built cultural heritage, and interdisciplinary making and performing. Based on the authors' own academic work and their applied research with a range of different organizations, Uncertainty and Possibility outlines new opportunities for research and intervention. Supported by online resources, it is essential reading for students, scholars and practitioners in design anthropology and design."--

Abstract: In the accounts compiled in this book, ethnography occurs through processes of material and social interventions that turn the field into a site for epistemic collaboration. Through creative interventions that unfold what we term as "fieldwork devices"-such as coproduced books, the circulation of repurposed data, co-organized events, authorization protocols, relational frictions, and social rhythms-anthropologists engage with their counterparts in the field in the construction of joint anthropological problematizations. In these situations, the traditional tropes of the fieldwork encounter (i.e. immersion and distance) give way to a narrative of intervention, where the aesthetics of collaboration in the production of knowledge substitutes or intermingles with participant observation. Building on this, the book proposes the concept of "experimental collaborations" to describe and conceptualize this distinctive ethnographic modality.

Abstract: This collection is the clearest articulation yet of a future-oriented practice for anthropology. It attempts nothing less than a re-centering of anthropology along future temporalities, opening up the field to new dimensions of public engagement by sketching the contours of a fieldwork-based practice centered on emergence, possibility and, ultimately, on the hope for better lives for people in the communities where we work. The papers in this volume range over multiple subjects, multiple methods and multiple media-multiple approaches to the future in anthropology. The breadth is not only testament to the robustness of the future anthropologies they advocate, but to the centrality of the future to the anthropology we already practice. Engaging a variety of methods (lifestory, interviews, participant observation), a variety of platforms (digital media, performance, photography), the contributors to this collection suggest the ways in which anthropology has always already been about the future, while at the same time gesturing to what anthropology may yet become.

Transforming current understandings of the home, this is an essential read for students and researchers in fields such as design, anthropology, human geography, sociology, and media and communication studies"

Abstract: "As the distinction between the digital and the material world becomes increasingly blurred, the ways in which we think about design are also shifting and evolving. How can the human, digital and material be brought together to intervene in the world? What constitutes our digital-material environments? How can we engage with digital technologies to make sustainable, healthy and meaningful decisions, both now and in the future? Digital Materialities presents twelve chapters by scholars and practitioners working at the intersection between design and digital research in the UK, Spain, Australia and the USA. By incorporating in-depth understandings of the digital-material world from both the social sciences and design, the book considers how this combined knowledge might advance our capacity to design for the future. Divided into three parts, the focus of the book moves from the theoretical to the practical: how different digital materialities are imagined and emerge, through software emulation, urban sensors and smart homes; how new digital designs are sparked through collaborations between social scientists and designers; and finally, how digital design emerges from the insider work of everyday designers. A fascinating, ground-breaking book for students and scholars of digital anthropology, media and communication, and anyone interested in the future of digital design."--Bloomsbury Publishing

Abstract: This sharp, innovative book champions the rising significance of ethnographic research on the use of digital resources around the world. It contextualises digital and pre-digital ethnographic research and demonstrates how the methodological, practical and theoretical dimensions are increasingly intertwined. Digital ethnography is central to our understanding of the social world; it can shape methodology and methods, and provides the technological tools needed to research society. The authoritative team of authors clearly set out how to research localities, objects and events as well as providing insights into exploring individuals' or communities' lived experiences, practices and relationships. The book: * Defines a series of central concepts in this new branch of social and cultural research * Challenges existing conceptual and analytical categories * Showcases new and innovative methods * Theorises the digital world in new ways * Encourages us to rethink pre-digital practices, media and environments This is the ideal introduction for anyone intending to conduct ethnographic research in today's digital society. Review: An essential book for anyone looking to research our contemporary media-saturated context and the implications it has for how we live our lives today. Digital Ethnography comes with an exciting and inspiring range of case studies that demonstrate how thoroughly digitally mediated we are, and how previous methodological concepts can be adapted and applied. This book sets a benchmark for ensuring a truly unique approach to digital ethnography, in an age where 'the digital' has become second nature -- Adrienne Evans This is a delightful book - lively, engaging, challenging - providing us with the best available resource for exploring the exciting field of digital ethnography. It is an indispensable text for anyone interested in understanding the diversity and complexity of how the digital is woven into everyday life. -- Martin Hand The real strength of this book is that it is jam packed with good clear examples of research. It is not merely an exhortation to digital ethnography, it shows how much and how well this has already been carried out. The result is a powerful case for this approach as one of the best ways of gaining a properly informed, contextualized and conceptually grounded understanding of our new digital worlds. -- Daniel Miller New phenomena invite us to rethink our ways of knowing about the world and about ourselves - as researchers and participants in an increasingly digitally-mediated world. In an inspiring yet concrete way, this volume unfolds a new sensibility towards everyday life in a digital age. -- Sonia Livingstone This book brings together a hugely stimulating set of examples to inspire ethnographers working in contemporary media-saturated worlds. The pioneering authorial team use their wealth of material to great effect in outlining strategies ethnographers can use to develop theoretically rich insights into the digital. -- Christine Hine Filled with fascinating examples and clear theoretical perspectives, this refreshing book will be of great help for ethnographers as they strive to account for the many ways digital media shape and are shaped by everyday life. -- Nancy Baym

Abstract: Contemporary anthropology is done in a world where social and digital media are playing an increasingly significant role, where anthropological and arts practices are often intertwined in museum and public intervention contexts, and where anthropologists are encouraged to engage with mass media. Because anthropologists are often expected and inspired to ensure their work engages with public issues, these opportunities to disseminate work in new ways and to new publics simultaneously create challenges as anthropologists move their practice into unfamiliar collaborative domains and expose their research to new forms of scrutiny. In this volume, contributors question whether a fresh public anthropology is emerging through these new practices

Abstract: "This book tells the story of the Scientific Buddha, "born" in Europe in the 1800s but commonly confused with the Buddha born in India 2,500 years ago. The Scientific Buddha was sent into battle against Christian missionaries, who were proclaiming across Asia that Buddhism was a form of superstition. He proved the missionaries wrong, teaching a dharma that was in harmony with modern science. And so his influence continues. Today his teaching of "mindfulness" is heralded as the cure for all manner of maladies, from depression to high blood pressure. In this potent critique, a well-known chronicler of the West's encounter with Buddhism demonstrates how the Scientific Buddha's teachings deviate in crucial ways from those of the far older Buddha of ancient India. Donald Lopez shows that the Western focus on the Scientific Buddha threatens to bleach Buddhism of its vibrancy, complexity, and power, even as the superficial focus on "mindfulness" turns Buddhism into merely the latest self-help movement. The Scientific Buddha has served his purpose, Lopez argues. It is now time for him to pass into nirvana. This is not to say, however, that the teachings of the ancient Buddha must be dismissed as mere cultural artifacts. They continue to present a meaningful challenge, even to our modern world"--

Abstract: Doing Sensory Ethnography responds to a recent an explosion of interest in the senses across the social sciences. In this important and groundbreaking book, Sarah Pink suggests re-thinking the ethnographic process through reflexive attention to what she terms the 'sensoriality' of the experience, practice, and knowledge of both researchers and those who participate in their research. The book provides an accessible analysis of the theoretical, methodological, and practical aspects of doing sensory ethnography, drawing on examples and case studies from the growing literature on sensory ethnographic studies and from the author's own work. Doing Sensory Ethnography is the first book to concentrate on outlining a sensory ethnographic methodology.

Abstract: Visual anthropology has proved to offer fruitful methods of research and representation to applied projects of social intervention. Through a series of case studies based on applied visual anthropological work in a range of contexts (health and medicine, tourism and heritage, social development, conflict and disaster relief, community filmmaking and empowerment, and industry) this volume examines both the range contexts in which applied visual anthropology is engaged, and the methodological and theoretical issues it raises.

Abstract: At the beginning of the twenty-first century the demand for anthropological approaches, understandings and methodologies outside academic departments is shifting and changing. Through a series of fascinating case studies of anthropologists' experiences of working with very diverse organizations in the private and public sector this volume examines existing and historical debates about applied anthropology. It explores the relationship between the "pure and the impure" - academic and applied anthropology, the question of anthropological identities in new working environments, new methodologies appropriate to these contexts, the skills needed by anthropologists working in applied contexts where multidisciplinary work is often undertaken, issues of ethics and responsibility, and how anthropology is perceived from the 'outside'. The volume signifies an encouraging future both for the application of anthropology outside academic departments and for the new generation of anthropologists who might be involved in these developments.

Abstract: Visual methods such as drawing, painting, video, photography and hypermedia offer increasingly accessible and popular resources for ethnographic research. In Working Images, prominent visual anthropologists and artists explore how old and new visual media can be integrated into contemporary forms of research and representation. Drawing upon projects undertaken both 'at home' in their native countries and abroad in locations such as Ethopia and Venezuela, the book's contributors demonstrate how visual methods are used in the field, and how these methods can produce and communicate knowledge about our own and other cultures. As well as focusing on key issues such as ethics and the relationship between word and image, they emphasize the huge range of visual methods currently opening up new possibilities for field research, from cartoons and graphic art to new media such as digital video and online technologies.

Abstract: The inaugural volume of Princeton Readings in Religions brings together the work of thirty scholars of the religions of India in a new anthology designed to reshape the ways in which the religious traditions of India are understood. The book contains translations of forty-five works, most of which have never before been available in a Western language. Many of these highlight types of discourse (especially ritual manuals, folktales, and oral narratives) and voices (vernacular, esoteric, domestic, and female) that have not been sufficiently represented in previous anthologies and standard accounts of Indian religions. The selections are drawn from ancient texts, medieval manuscripts, modern pamphlets, and contemporary fieldwork in rural and urban India
