Abstract: Ethnographic museums, now often rebranded as collections of ‘world cultures’, appear permanently problematic, even as their contexts and the orientation of their activities change. Across Europe and elsewhere, curators and other museum staff are committed to dialogue and collaboration with the peoples from whom collections were made. But their vast assemblages of artefacts, removed from countries of origin primarily during the colonial period, and assumed, mostly inaccurately, to have been looted, seem always in question. Photo-Museology arises from an art project undertaken over 25 years. From the early 1990s, Mark Adams and Nicholas Thomas together investigated sites of cross-cultural encounter in the Pacific and associated places in Europe, ranging from Captain Cook memorials to ethnographic museums. Some of those museums still exhibited colonial symbols and forms of knowledge, others had attempted to displace such histories, foregrounding more inclusive or progressive stories. Complementing the academic studies in the Pacific Presences series, this book offers what John Berger referred to as ‘another way of telling’. Through photography, it revisits the places collections were made, and the places they ended up in. It is a meditation on presence and absence.

Abstract: Elizabeth A. Povinelli's inheritance was passed down not through blood or soil but through a framed map of Trentino, Alto Adige-the region where family's ancestral alpine village is found. Far more than a map hanging above the family television, the image featured colors and lines that held in place the memories and values fueling the Povinelli family's fraught relationships with the village and with each other. In her graphic memoir The Inheritance, Povinelli explores the events, traumas, and powers that divide and define our individual and collective pasts and futures. Weaving together stories of her grandparents' flight from their village in the early twentieth century to the fortunes of their knife-grinding business in Buffalo, New York, and her own Catholic childhood in a shrinking Louisiana woodlands of the 1960s and 1970s, Povinelli describes the serial patterns of violence, dislocation, racism and structural inequality that have shaped not only her life but the American story. Plumbing the messy relationships among nationality, ethnicity, kinship, religion, and belonging, The Inheritance takes us into the gulf between the facts of history and the stories we tell ourselves to survive and justify them

Abstract: "Explore the changing world of late nineteenth-century Iran through the gaze of one of its most renowned photographers, Antoin Sevruguin. This volume, which will be accompanied by a forthcoming exhibition, publishes for the first time the Oriental Institute Museum's complete collection of nineteenth-century Iranian photographs, most of which were created by Sevruguin. Sevruguin's artfully staged photographs still resonate with us today. Accompanying the print catalog is a series of essays that investigate Sevruguin's life and photographic career, including the lasting impact of his unique vision, as demonstrated by the work of contemporary artist Yassaman Ameri" -- Publisher's description
Note: Literaturverzeichnis Seite 347-367 , "A hitherto little-known treasure of the Oriental Institute Museum is its collection of 152 Qajar-era photographs, which date to the nineteenth century and were captured primarily by the acclaimed Iranian-Armenian photographer Antoin Sevruguin. Recently revealed by a growing body of scholarship to be a major figure in early photography, Sevruguin documented changing life in Iran through a wide range of subjects as the country stood on the cusp of modernity at the turn of the twentieth century. As emphasized by special exhibit curator Tasha Vorderstrasse, Sevruguin stood in contrast to his Western contemporaries who, immersed in the Orientalist tradition, focused specifically on the antiquity of the country, romanticizing the ruins of a glorious past. Rather, Sevruguin's photography promotes the newly arrived conveniences of the modern age while simultaneously capturing traditional ways of Iranian life - often drawing a stark contrast between the two in their juxtaposition. Understanding the new technology to be more than a mere medium of documentation for posterity, Sevruguin was an early proponent of photography as art, frequently backstamping his work with the label "photographie artistique". Sevruguin's distinctive approach to composition, choice of subject matter, and use of light and shadows are hallmarks of his photographic vision. Expertly curated by Vorderstrasse - and timely for the recent scholarly and artistic appreciation of Sevruguin's work - Antoin Sevruguin : Past and Present exhibits for the first time the Oriental Institute's unstudied and largely forgotten collection of Qajar-era photographs that were acquired at the beginning of the twentieth century. As one might expect of an OI exhibition, Antoin Sevruguin : Past and Present and its accompanying catalog rigorously explore Sevruguin's work in the fullest of its historical, cultural, and ethnographic contexts."--taken from Foreword, page vii

Abstract: This Is Not an Atlas gathers more than 40 counter-cartographies from all over the world. This collection shows how maps are created and transformed as a part of political struggle, for critical research or in art and education: from indigenous territories in the Amazon to the anti-eviction movement in San Francisco; from defending commons in Mexico to mapping refugee camps with balloons in Lebanon; from slums in Nairobi to squats in Berlin; from supporting communities in the Philippines to reporting sexual harassment in Cairo. This Is Not an Atlas seeks to inspire, to document the underrepresented, and to be a useful companion when becoming a counter-cartographer yourself

Abstract: The region of the Himalayas and the adjoining Tibetan plateau is known for its unique and characteristic vernacular architecture and housing culture which is slowly but surely disappearing. The first part of the book analyses 19 traditional houses in the region that respond in diverse ways to the specifics of their location and local climate. The second part presents a comparative study of the construction elements – walls, roof and façades – using photographs and hand-drawn construction details. The newly produced scale drawings provide an excellent basis for comparative review. Detailed plans, atmospheric photographs and informative texts take the reader on a journey through a fascinating building culture

Abstract: An obsession with fashion is nothing new. Throughout history, dress has mesmerised with its power to charm and communicate identity and status. In this first English translation of an extraordinary historical document - the earliest known book of fashion - fashion-conscious Renaissance man Matthäus Schwarz and his son Veit Konrad chronicle their lives through the clothes they wore. Lavishly illustrated, The First Book of Fashion recaptures the experience of sixteenth-century life through the rich intricacies of dress and its cultural meaning. The book unpicks the fabrics, cuts, colours and detail of these remarkable illustrations and their brilliant captions handwritten by Schwarz, arguably making him the first fashion blogger. Historians Ulinka Rublack and Maria Hayward bring the original manuscript to life with new, insightful commentaries alongside the original text, providing an unparalleled portrait of sixteenth-century dress and culture in context. Including a specially-designed pattern by Olivier award-winning costume designer Jenny Tiramani, from which readers can recreate one of Schwarz's original garments, this is a valuable resource for everyone from scholars to designers to fashion enthusiasts

Abstract: In Photography and Anthropology, Christopher Pinney presents a provocative and readable account of the strikingly parallel histories of the two disciplines, as well as a polemical narrative and overview of the use of photography by anthropologists from the 1840s to the present. Walter Benjamin suggested that photography "make[s] the difference between technology and magic visible as a thoroughly historical variable," and Pinney here explores photography as a divinatory practice that prompted anthropologists to capture the "primitive" lives of those they studied. Early anthropology celebrated p

His work isn't found in galleries and he doesn't practice the kind of sensationalism that is typical of the art world. He is a refreshingly modest artist, and his delicate fleeting work is extraordinarily beautiful, remarkably intelligent, and endlessly charming. It is our hope that ""Thrown Rope"" will place Hutchinson where he belongs in the canon of modern art alongside Andy Goldsworthy and Robert Smithson. Hutchinson's works are ephemeral and evanescent, produced out in the open

Abstract: It may be hard to believe, but there actually was a time when the postcard image was not a cliche. To reach it, you'll have to set your clock back to the end of the nineteenth century, when an Act of Congress allowed Americans to mail a card for just one cent. A few years later, Kodak introduced an easy-to-use and affordable folding camera that put postcard power into the hands of ordinary citizens, setting off a craze.
Note: A selection of these cards was first exhibited under the title Postmarked at the K.S. Art Gallery, New York, May 2004 , Includes interview with artist , Electronic reproduction; Available via World Wide Web
