Abstract: African Slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean is an original survey of the economic and social history of slavery and of the Afro-American experience in Latin America and the Caribbean. Covering not only Spanish but also Portuguese and French regions, and encompassing the latest research on the plantation system as well as on mining and the urban experience, the book brings together the recent findings on demography, the slave trade, the construction of the slave community and Afro-American culture. The book also sheds new light on the processes of accommodation and rebellion and the experience of emancipation. The book concludes with a look at the post-emancipation integration patterns in the different societies, analyzing the relative success of the ex-slaves in obtaining control over land and escaping from the old plantation regimes. This second edition brings together the latest research and newest themes developed in the past two decades on slavery and the Afro-American experience both in the traditional centers of the Caribbean and Brazil, but also in such previously neglected areas as Mexico and the mainland Spanish American colonies and republics.

Abstract: History lies heavily on South Africa, and Adam Hochschild brings to bear a lifetime's familiarity with the country in an eye-opening work that blends history and reportage. Hochschild looks at the tensions of modern South Africa through a dramatic prism: the pivotal nineteenth-century Battle of Blood River -- which determined whether the Boers or the Zulus would control that part of the world -- and its contentious commemoration by rival groups 150 years later. This incisive book offers an unusual window onto a society that remains divided. In his epilogue, Hochschild extends his view to the astonishing political changes that have occurred in the country in recent years -- and the changes yet to be made.

Abstract: Diasporic Ruptures: Globality, Migrancy, and Expressions of Identity lies at the intersections of various processes emerging from globalization: border-crossings, transnationalism, identity formations. Carefully selected and placed in two volumes, the essays here represent works of both well-seasoned scholars as well as emerging writers, academics and intellectuals. The volumes critically examine various manifestations of the trend now commonly known as globalization--manifestations that many diasporic communities, immigrants, and people from all walks of life experience. They also illuminate recent political, social, economic and technological developments that are taking place in a rapidly changing world. Volume One offers sophisticated insights into the nature of contemporary formations of diasporic life, internationalism, and hybrid identities. The volume asks bold questions around what it means to live in constantly shifting boundaries of nationality, identity, and citizenship. The type of methodological, discursive and experiential awareness promoted by this work helps us understand how millions of people face the challenge of living in a globalizing world; it also fosters a consciousness of how globalization itself functions differently in different environments. Volume Two addresses additional and more nuanced questions around culture, race, sexuality, migration, displacement and resistance. It also explores certain epistemological and methodological fallacies regarding conventional articulations of nation-state, nationalism, and the local/global nexus. The volume seeks to answer questions such as: What are the meanings and connotations of 'displacement' in a rapidly globalizing world? What are some dilemmas and challenges around notions of cultural hybridity, linguistic diversity, and a sense of belonging? What is the meaning of home in

Abstract: Getting the picture, constructing (and deconstructing) the picture, finding the picture, viewing the picture, being in the picture , changing the pictures these are all phrases that apply to the fascinating world of 'putting people in the picture' in visual research within the Social Sciences. Putting People in the Picture: Visual Methodologies for Social Change focuses on the ways in which researchers, practitioners and activists are using such techniques as photo voice, collaborative video, drawings and other visual and arts-based tools as modes of inquiry, as modes of representation and as modes of disseminating findings in social research. The various chapters address methodological, analytical, interpretive, aesthetic, technical and ethical concerns in using visual methodologies in work with young people, teachers, community health care workers and even the self-as-researcher. The range of issues addressed in the work is broad, and includes work in the areas of HIV & AIDS, schooling, poverty, gender violence, race, and children's visions for the future. While the studies are situated within a variety of social contexts, the focus is primarily on work in Southern Africa. The book takes up some of the theoretical and practical challenges offered by Visual Sociology, Image-based Research, Media Studies, Rural Development, and Community-based and Participatory Research, and in so doing offers audiences an array of visual approaches to studying and bringing about social change.

Abstract: Singapore has been taken by many researchers as a fascinating living language policy and planning laboratory. Language and education policy in Singapore has been pivotal not only to the establishment and growth of schooling, but to the very project of nation building. Since their inception, 'mother tongue' policies have been established with two explicit goals. Firstly there is the development and training of human and intellectual capital for the expansion and networking of a Singaporean service and information economy. Secondly there is the maintenance of cultural heritage and values as a means for social cohesion and, indeed, the maintenance of community and regional social capital. These tasks have been fraught with tension and contradiction, both in relation to the conditions of rapid cultural, economic and political change in Asia and globally, but as well because of the tensions between the so called 'world language English' and Singapore's three other official languages, Tamil, Malay and Mandarin. This has been complicated, of course, by the challenges of vibrant regional dialects and the emergence of Singlish as a powerful medium of community life.

The virtual world is becoming so similar to the real one that some think the overt laws, or at least agreed-upon rules, may be necessary for the Net to survive in its current open form. Abstract: The Globalization of Nothing is back in a revised and completely updated Second Edition. In this reconceptualized volume, author George Ritzer focuses his attention squarely on the processes of globalization and how they relate to McDonaldization. This revision is shorter, more concise, and spends much less space on the Nothing-Something continuum that he introduced in the First Edition.

Abstract: Unhappy couples may be unhappy each in their own way - but they're all fighting about the same things: money, sex and kids. These three topics often cause conflict that can erode even the strongest marriages. In this prescriptive, practical guide, popular author and therapist Dr. Tina B. Tessina shows couples how to deal with their differences in these critical areas, and resolve them before they take their toll on their relationship. They learn the proper etiquette for marital debate, as well as creative approaches to solving the problems that confront them in their life together. Given today's high divorce rate statistics and the so-called age of the 'serial marriage' - Money, Sex and Kids helps couples avoid the divorce court by addressing the divisive issues most likely to tear their unions apart.

Abstract: School bullies are a fact of life, but what can parents really do to protect their children? Keith Vitali, a martial arts expert who has offered his advice on Oprah and given seminars around the country, provides the answer in Bullyproof Your Child. His book presents advice to parents on identifying the signs of verbal bullying, physical bullying, and cyberbullying and offers techniques proven to help children faced with bullying. Now any mom and dad can build a child's confidence, offer advice on parrying verbal abuse, and--as a last resort--teach appropriate self-defense strategies. Vitali explains exactly what bullies are and what motivates them, recounts real-life incidents that provide insight into the physical and emotional harm bullies can inflict, and details his self-defense techniques with more than 150 color photographs and easy-to-follow, step-by-step descriptions. No child should live in fear of a bully, and no parent should be without Vitali's invaluable advice. Now they won't have to.

Abstract: This work reveals the often racy, ribald, and sexually charged nature of the vaudeville stage, looking at a broad array of provocative performers from disrobing dancers to nude posers to skimpily dressed athletes. Examining the ways in which big-time vaudeville nonetheless managed to market itself as pure, safe, and morally acceptable, this work compares the industry's marketing and promotional practices to those of other emergent mass-marketers of the vaudeville era in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Included are in-depth examinations of important figures from the vaudeville
