Abstract: When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories

For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezsö.From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold-heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique-they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes's introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes.A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers

Abstract: They are the stories we've known since we were children: Rapunzel--Hansel and Gretel--Cinderella--and Sleeping Beauty. But the works originally collected by the Brothers Grimm in the early 1800s are not necessarily the versions we heard before bedtime. They're darker and while they don't always end happily, their dark conclusions can be far more interesting. This edition of Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales includes all our cherished favorites--Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Cap, and many more--in their original versions. Many of these tales begin with the familiar refrain of "once upon a time"--but they end with something unexpected and fascinating! Lexile score: 1150L.

They popularized stories such as The Frog Prince, Hansel and Gretel, Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White. W. H. Auden praised the collection as one of the founding works of Western culture.

Abstract: The legendary folklorists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm are widely credited with preserving and documenting Europe's oral fairy tale tradition. On several extended trips collecting stories in and around Germany, the pair transcribed more than 200 classic folk tales. Abstract: Abstract: "Decentralised policy formation and implementation is one of the salient features of China's family planning programme that is the most important driving force of China's fertility transition. This paper reviews the differentials in local policy and programmes, and examines their effects on patterns of fertility transition across China. Major consequences of the differential fertility transition, such as varied processes of population ageing and labour force supply etc. at provincial level, are then discussed. The author argues that the success of government population policy to a large extent is determined by socio-economic and cultural factors. On the other hand, regional demographic patterns have profound impact on China's regional and rural-urban differences in terms of socio-economic development. Large scale migration is one of such examples." (author's abstract)

Abstract: Abstract: "The starting point of the project was the question why people delay childbearing until later in life. Based on qualitative, problem-centred interviews with highly educated women in Vienna, this article investigates the effect of fears and uncertainties relating to this issue. The data were analysed with a combination of grounded theory and objective hermeneutic sequence analysis. The recent literature comprises works about the impact of uncertain economic conditions on fertility. To explain these issues, the New Home Economics approach has developed the idea of opportunity costs. The assessment of the present economic situation and future prospects produce insecurity and fears. The Second Demographic Transition assumes that 'individual autonomy' and 'female emancipation' are the main reasons for delaying family formation. Some theoretical considerations by Easterlin, and Ajzen's and Fishbein's theory of planned behaviour are useful for elucidating other parts of the results. The d

(ICI)

Abstract: Bound by a common thread-a serene foolishness cropping up in many a character and absurd situation-the three charming tales in this long unavailable book are not as well-known as they deserve to be. Wanda Gág's interpretations of "The Clever Wife" and "The Three Feathers" are exceptionally funny, while "Goose Hans" is particularly hard to find in Grimm collections. Gág's uniquely American translations and her equally enchanting illustrations will provide sheer delight for the young and old

Abstract: Abstract: "Kibbutz elderly demonstrated in the past a high level of health, exceptional longevity, positive wellbeing, and strong evidence for successful aging. For instance, in 1995, life expectancy of females in kibbutzim was (at birth) 82.5 years and 78.1 years formales (compared to 79.8 and 75.9 for Israeli Jews). Research showed social arrangements (based on principles of solidarity, equality, social integration and social support) to be the prime factor responsible for these positive results. Social arrangements were translated to create social capital in both its principal forms: physical and social - to act for the health and well being of the kibbutz elderly. Yet, the importance of socioeconomic equality among members could not be positively ascertained, as there existed practically no differences in this regard among kibbutz communities. Since the end of the eighties, many kibbutzim experienced major structural and ideological changes with major impact upon their social arrangement

Abstract: Abstract: "Disintegration of the USSR, formation of the new independent states onto the post-Soviet space became a significant event in contemporary history and human biographies. Majority of these states have begun market and democracy reforms, which pushed dramatic system transformation of their societies. It was expected, that reforms would provide the economy growth, increase of welfare and life chances of citizens unlimited by the centralized economy and authoritarian state. However already from the mid 1990th sharp social polarization (Gini coefficient was multiplied almost in 2 times, except for Belarus and Georgia), decline of life chances for most citizens, considerable reducing of life expectancy (above all things, capable of working men) showed up in these countries. The daily life of the people living in the former USSR has been transformed, with the certainties of everyday life being eroded as the bureaucratic redistributive order has taken on the guise of the market.

Abstract: Abstract: Der Beitrag dokumentiert die Diskussion auf der "Author Meets Critic"-Veranstaltung zu John Urrys "Sociology Beyond Societies" auf dem 32. (ICE)

Abstract: Abstract: "Part of the study of twentieth-century changes in German, American, English and Dutch manners books focuses on developments in courting and dating. It shows that in all these countries, around the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, young people started to 'date', that is, to go out together, both with and without a chaperone. From the 1920s onward, however, advice on dating, necking and petting, the 'line', the stag line, cutting in, and getting stuck appears in American manners books only. The US dating regime that emerged signified the escape of young people from under parental wings and the formation of a relatively autonomous courting regime of their own, leading to a head start in the emancipation of sexuality and to the rise of the first western youth culture, which was restricted to the USA. This emancipation of young people in the USA made young women less dependent upon their parents, but in regard to their relationship to young men, the dating regime kept w

Abstract: Abstract: Der einleitende Beitrag zum Plenum IV "Wege der Moderne und Formen der Zivilgesellschaft in Indien" des 32.

Abstract: Abstract: "Politique de la ville is the French equivalent of the German programme: Soziale Stadt (Walther 2002). Recently, emphasis is put on the role of 'culture' in the empowerment process of social housing tenants in 'disadvantaged' suburban estates. Empirical evidence from case studies shows serious conflicts between two definitions of culture: 1. Central government officers from the Ministry of Culture tend to fund cultural projects coherent with their normative and elitist vision of 'la Culture', illustrating Bourdieu's concept of cultural domination. 2. Adversely, cultural activists from communities and neighbourhoods tend to have an anthropological vision of the diversity of cultures (les cultures). They want to implement cultural projects with a bottom up approach, but they find extremely difficult to raise funds as popular cultures have a weak legitimacy. The paper will focus on the transactional process allowing compromises between cultural universalism and cultural specificities

He was a chemist of some importance on an international stage, and a major influence on the scientific fraternity in India - ingiving them a legitimate voice as Indian scientists, and in giving them the confidenceto practice in a less unequal environment. He was a major participant in debates on Indian nationalism from the late nineteenth century to independence, and of the place of science within it. He linked debates on the philosophy of science and of its validity for India in the late nineteenth century to those on the justification of 'development' in the 1940s. PC Ray crops up in all these debates, but in a fragmented manner - and in writing about the debates, each specialist field culls from Ray what it finds of its own particular concerns.

Abstract: Abstract: "Starting point of the author's research is the appearance of a new form of social inequality: the digital divide. He defines this abstract notion as the opening cleavage between the information poor and the information rich, forming an additional source of inequality within the already established social ordering. He deals with reasons for private computer and internet use. The general question is who uses internet for her or his private ends and how do we explain possible differences. Research on this topic sometimes is challenged by charges of studying a non-existent myth or 'luxury' problem. However, computer literacy seems to be significantly related to socioeconomic positions. Most of the studies deal with the numbers and counts of computers, hosts, internet connections, indicating a predominantly economistic view towards the problem. This approach, however, disregards all other social, cultural, or technological implications. His results indicate that human capital and socia

Abstract: Abstract: "The paper rejects the notion of 'multiple modernities' as both conceptually flawed and empirically unfounded. In line with the sociological tradition, it will argue that we should speak of modernity only in the singular. Modernity, according to this view, denotesa peculiar epoch in the history of human kind, originating in Europe and spreading from there to the rest of the world. We may well be tempted to succumb too quickly to ill-conceived generalizations of what are in fact often only particular, locally based experiences. But we should also not lose sight of the truly revolutionary character of the historical 'breakthrough' to modernity. The protagonists of the multiple modernities paradigm appear to be doing precisely this: their very terminology impliesa trivialization of what is common to 'the' modern condition. At the same time, it suggests an overrating of which ever diversities (may) exist in different parts of the world. The paper will identify four main conceptual flaw

Abstract: Abstract: "The use of the concept 'underclass' has been the subject of considerable debate among scholars of urban poverty. Many question the meaning of the term and its value as a social category, and react critically to the way the term has been appropriated by those intellectuals and journalists whose ideological views and orientations strongly influence their perceptions of the urban poor (Hughes 1989; Aponte 1990; Katz 1993; Gans 1995; O'Connor 2001). However, in their critical commentary the scholars of urban poverty do not address, in theoretical terms, the scientific import of the concept 'underclass;' that is, its role in the description, explanation and prediction of social behavior. Rather they object to the way the term is used to label a subgroup of the urban poor whose cultural traits are thought to be different from those of the larger society. In this paper, the author considers whether a theoretically defined concept of underclass - as opposed to the nonsystematic and atheor

Abstract: Abstract: "The editor argues that the convergence claim characterising classic modernization theory is not tenable anymore unless it is lifted onto a discursive level. It can be rescued for contemporary modernization theory only if it is linked to the development of practices of critical examination of the modernization project itself. Rather than the emergence of certain structural patterns or interpretive templates and attitudes, modernization theory can take as its point of departure the general tendency toward the development of immanent criticism of society that characterises modernising and modernised societies. Recent theoretical work highlights the inescapability of conflicts in modern societies. Thereby it is not so much the differences between different types of societal modernization patterns that cause conflicts in the contemporary world, but instead the different claims and attitudes within modernised and modernising societies that are increasingly confronting each other. Abstract: Renowned children's book author Wanda Gag presents these classic Grimm tales, accompanied by whimsical illustrations. Drawing on her peasant heritage and childlike sense of wonder, Gag translated the fairy tales in a uniquely American vernacular tongue. More Tales from Grimm contains over thirty more, including ""The Golden Key,"" ""The Seven Swabians,"" and ""The Wolf and the Fox,"" as well as almost one hundred illustrations. No other editions of Grimm's fairy tales for children can match Gag's richness of prose and the humor, beauty, and sheer magic of her pictorial interpretation. Best kno

Abstract: Abstract: "Since spring 1990 approximately 5,000 Soviet Jewish immigrants have arrived in Berlin. They are part of a much larger influx to Germany which, to date, lies near 40,000 persons. Based on a three year research project among the immigrant population in Berlin, an analysis is offered of the types of adaptation strategies these immigrants follow in dealing with their new surroundings. Three (pairs of) variables appear to be especially significant in this respect. First of all, the level of compatibility of an immigrant's cultural capital with German society's institutional requirements (e.g. pertaining to labour market access). Secondly, the habitus an immigrant brings along, viz. Soviet cultural elite as compared to Soviet consumer habitus which are closely related to whether the immigrant has a Jewish identity or rather was socialised into the dominant culture. Thirdly, whether the immigrant's motives for emigration were of a conservative or innovative nature. The analysis results i

Abstract: Abstract: Der Verfasser entwirft einen theoretischen Rahmen zur Erfassung von 'Autorität'.

Abstract: The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859), were born in Hanau, near Frankfurt, in the German state of Hesse. Throughout their lives they remained close friends, and both studied law at Marburg University. Jacob was a pioneer in the study of German philology, and although Wilhelm's work was hampered by poor health the brothers collaborated in the creation of a German dictionary, not completed until a century after their deaths. But they were best (and universally)

Abstract: The primal beating heart at the center of much of the Western literary canon can be found in the folk stories, myths, and fairy tales collected by the amateur folklorists Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm. Surprisingly graphic in comparison to their sanitized twentieth-century retellings, these intense tales are not for the faint at heart. A must-read for any fan of folklore
