Abstract: At Honeycomb, customers send lots of data and then compose complex, ad hoc queries. Most are simple, some are not, and some are really not. The load is complex, spontaneous, and urgent, and it would have been prohibitively expensive to size a server cluster to handle big queries quickly. So Honeycomb took a different approach: farm the work out to AWS Lambda, Amazon's serverless offering. In this model, Lambda becomes an on-demand accelerator for Honeycomb's always-on servers. The benefits are immense, improving response times by an order of magnitude. But the challenges are numerous and often unexpected. Join us for this Case Study with Honeycomb developer advocate Jessica Kerr to learn how Honeycomb approached the problem of handling its clients' queries with Lambda. You'll learn the benefits and constraints of the serverless-as-accelerator model and get practical advice based on Honeycomb's own hard-earned experience. Recorded on April 26, 2022. See the original event page for resources for further learning or watch recordings of other past events. O'Reilly Case Studies explore how organizations have overcome common challenges in business and technology through a series of one-hour interactive events. You'll engage in a live conversation with experts, sharing your questions and challenges while hearing their unique perspectives, insights, and lessons learned.

Abstract: The Gilded Rose is a classic refactoring kata, available in many languages at https://github.com/emilybache/GildedRose-Refactoring-Kata. In this video series we start with the Java version and show how to migrate it to Kotlin as well as refactoring the procedural code into both object-oriented and functional styles. The rules of the exercise are here. Part 1 takes the procedural Java code and ends with a nice OO solution, using inheritance to represent the different types of item. Part 2 replaces the inheritance with composition, getting perhaps closer to the heart of the domain. Part 3 removes the mutation inherent in the procedural code to give a nice functional solution. Part 4 is a bonus refactoring, starting from the beginning to see how far the update code can be improved while making no changes to any other files. The code is available at https://github.com/dmcg/gilded-rose-kata. This video content supplements the O'Reilly book Java to Kotlin, A Refactoring Guidebook.

Abstract: Software development is full of uncertainty. And as a services company, Bounteous has to balance many challenges around that lack of certainty: clients want to be able to make changes, but they still want predictability on time and costs. In the earlier days of its growth, the company struggled with this balance. After considering different methodologies to help address these pain points, Bounteous opted to use Agile because the principles behind it would help the organization embrace a more nimble mindset. But evolving an Agile approach to support this at scale across numerous clients while providing enough flexibility to adapt to specific client situations created several challenges--an experience that really highlights the general problems companies may have in adopting Agile. Join us for this Case Study with Bounteous CTO Seth Dobbs to learn how Bounteous adopted Agile to enable flexibility for its customers while balancing the needs for transparency and predictability across the organization. You'll hear about the roadblocks the company encountered (and how it overcame them) and get insight into how executive support, organizational structure, and team commitment contributed to developing a successful Agile approach. Recorded on February 8, 2022. See the original event page for resources for further learning or watch recordings of other past events. Abstract: There's a pressing need for tools and workflows that meet data scientists where they are. This is also a serious business need: how to enable an organization of data scientists, who aren't software engineers by training, to build and deploy end-to-end machine learning workflows and applications independently. The new category of tools, frameworks, and processes that fill this need is often called MLOps. In this edition of Radar Talks, Hugo Bowne-Anderson explains why machine learning applications need special treatment in the first place and why we can't just fold them into existing DevOps best practices. You'll also explore what a modern technology stack for streamlined ML processes looks like and discover how you can start applying the stack in practice today. Recorded on April 5, 2022. See the original event page for resources for further learning or watch recordings of other past events. Abstract: When you think of programming languages, you probably think of Java, Kotlin, JavaScript, or Python, not CSS, SQL, or HTML. And you may not even have heard of Alloy, Modelica, or SNOBOL. But all are identified as languages, even if they're not generally considered as such. So what are the distinctions among them? And maybe most importantly, what can programmers learn from "not programming languages"? Join us for a special conversation on programming languages with Neal Ford and Mozilla software engineer Chelsea Troy. They'll talk about what constitutes a programming language, what we can learn from questioning how we categorize things, and how to identify "assumed context" and why it matters. Abstract: When Open GI transitioned one of its flagship products to an Azure-based SaaS offering, the work involved organizational redesign, developer upskilling, and architectural transformation. Key to tracking and continually improving all these efforts was Accelerate's "four key metrics" for supporting software delivery performance: lead time, deployment frequency, mean time to restore (MTTR), and change fail percentage. Join us for this Case Study with Thoughtworks tech principal Andrew Harmel-Law to explore Open GI's digital transformation and learn how the company set the four key metrics up and embedded them in the emerging build-and-learn culture. Andrew will cover each step in the process, from zero to getting the metrics up and running as a tool for team learning and improvement. Along the way, you'll also hear about the trade-offs, successes, and setbacks encountered as well as the wide-ranging impacts of all teams having these metrics at their disposal. Abstract: In cybersecurity, the "fortress and moat" analogy served well only when users worked within office walls on office machines and had to go through physical access controls and a firewall perimeter to access the network. Today's organizations want to enable their workforce to work from anywhere, on any device, and at any time. That means the IT network perimeter is no longer a position of advantage. The adoption of cloud, the increasingly complex and varied threat landscape, remote workers, third-party vendors, and distributed offices are the kinds of challenges that can't be addressed by traditional perimeter defenses, such as a firewall with some form of intrusion prevention-detection (IDS/IPS) system. Securing information or data means wrapping security around user identity: in other words, identity is now the new perimeter and requires implementing an identity and access management capability. Join expert Harpreet Kohli to explore identity and access management (IAM) concepts and components, key challenges, and an action plan to build an IAM strategy and road map. If you want to better understand how IAM strategy, technology, and processes work together to build an IAM capability in an organization or are preparing for the CISSP or CISM certification exams, this course is for you. What you'll learn and how you can apply it By the end of this course, you'll understand: The problems IAM will solve The components of IAM and how they work together IAM use cases An action plan to build or update your IAM strategy and road map And you'll be able to: Assess the current state of IAM in your organization Identify the deficiencies and associated risks Establish criteria for a successful IAM implementationThis course is for you because... You're an IT professional, cybersecurity professional, or technical or management decision maker who wants to learn about IAM.
