Kathleen Rice examines the ways these tensions and restructurings lead to uncertainties about how South Africans should live together in their daily lives, with particular implications for understanding and responding to widespread gendered and sexual conflict and violence.     Abstract: Running from Bondage tells the compelling stories of enslaved women, who comprised one-third of all runaways, and the ways in which they fled or attempted to flee bondage during and after the Revolutionary War. Karen Cook Bell's enlightening and original contribution to the study of slave resistance in eighteenth-century America explores the individual and collective lives of these women and girls of diverse circumstances, while also providing details about what led them to escape. She demonstrates that there were in fact two wars being waged during the Revolutionary Era: a political revolution for independence from Great Britain and a social revolution for emancipation and equality in which Black women played an active role. Running from Bondage broadens and complicates how we study and teach this momentous event, one that emphasizes the chances taken by these 'Black founding mothers' and the important contributions they made to the cause of liberty

    Abstract: "A Woman's Empire explores a new dimension of Russian imperialism: women actively engaged in the process of late imperial expansion. The book investigates how women writers, travellers, and scientists who journeyed to and beyond Central Asia participated in Russia's "civilizing" and colonizing mission, utilizing newly found educational opportunities while navigating powerful discourses of femininity as well as male-dominated science. Katya Hokanson shows how these Russian women resisted domestic roles in a variety of ways. The women writers include a governor general's wife, a fiction writer who lived in Turkestan, and a famous Theosophist, among others.     Abstract: "In this book, Robert C. Smith presents a philosophical and empirical examination on the subordination of women and blacks in the United States. Comparing liberalism - specifically the major social contract philosophies - and Marxism on the nature of the subordination of blacks and women and their proposals, if any, for women's and black liberation, Smith argues that sexual and racial equalitarianism in the United States is about politics and power. He begins with a discussion of the multiple meanings of politics and its relationship to power, and an analysis of nine power bases blacks and women should acquire and manipulate in order to advance a moral and substantive equalitarianism. These power bases include money, knowledge (including technology and information), religion, morality, authority, equality, charisma, violence and status. Smith concludes by making a moral case for racial and sexual equalitarianism and advocates for black leadership to use the power bases available to it make reparations the civil rights issue of the 21st century.     Abstract: "In the same magazines where women are urged to be free and to have careers of their own, one can also spot advice about the best ways to be an obliging wife and a perfect mother. Literature, film, TV, and the news depict and glorify a specific, sometimes voluntary, sort of female submissiveness that can be a source of pleasure or satisfaction for even the most independent feminist. But this female submissiveness has scarcely warranted attention in philosophy or feminist thought. From a feminist point of view, imagining that women might, in one way or the other choose to try out such submissiveness comes off as anti-feminist or even misogynistic. But are these submissive desires and pleasures at odds with the feminist's independence? In We Are Not Born Submissive, Garcia explains that the feminist agenda has many components but there are (at least) two of which are at the fore: shedding light on the oppression of women qua women, and fighting against this oppression.
    Abstract: Studying female submissiveness, therefore, is a feminist undertaking in that it consists of hearing and taking seriously women's experience, of not presuming that they are victims, passive, or perverted. Garcia maintains it is not only possible, but necessary to study female submissiveness without presupposing anything, typically or naturally feminine or anti-feminist in this submissiveness. Using the theoretical framework of philosopher, Simone de Beauvoir and others, Garcia theorizes this fascinating dynamic in its full complexity. By looking at male dominance not from the point of view of those who dominate but from those who submit, Garcia avoids describing the exterior, objective subordination of women. Instead, she is able to examine what exactly it means to be a woman under male dominance, thereby describing the subjective experience beneath domination.

    Abstract: "This volume offers an overview of what it was like to be female and to live and die in Victorian England (c. 1837-1901), by situating this experience within the scientific and social contexts of the times. With a temporal focus on women's life experience, the book moves from childhood and youth, through puberty and adolescence, to pregnancy, birth, and motherhood, into senescence. Drawing on osteological sources, medical discourses, and examples from the literature and cultural history of the period, alongside social and environmental data derived from ethnographic and archival investigations, the authors explore the experience of being female in the Victorian era for women across classes. In synthesizing current research on demographic statistics, maternal morbidity and mortality, and bioarchaeological evidence on patterns of aging and death, they analyze how changing social ideals, cultural and environmental variability, shifting economies, and evolving medical and scientific understanding about the body combined to shape female health and identity in the nineteenth century. Victorian women faced a variety of challenges, including changing attitudes regarding appropriate behavior, social roles, and beauty standards, while grappling with new understandings of the role played by gender and sexuality in shaping women's lives from youth to old age. The book concludes by considering the relevance of how Victorian narratives of womanhood and the experience of being female have influenced perceptions of female health and cultural constructions of identity today"

    Abstract: "Behind the Iron Curtain, the politics of sexuality and gender were, in many ways, more progressive than the West. While Polish citizens undoubtedly suffered under the oppressive totalitarianism of socialism, abortion was legal, clear laws protected victims of rape, and it was relatively easy to legally change one's gender. In Gender, Pleasure, and Violence, Agnieszka Kościańska reveals that sexologists-experts such as physicians, therapists, and educators-not only treated patients but also held sex education classes at school, published regular columns in the press, and authored highly popular sex manuals that sold millions of copies. Yet strict gender roles within the home meant that true equality was never fully within reach. Drawing on interviews, participant observation, and archival work, Kościańska shares how professions like sexologists defined the notions of sexual pleasure and sexual violence under these sweeping cultural changes.     Abstract: In this sharp intervention, authors Lucí Cavallero and Verónica Gago defiantly develop a feminist understanding of debt, showing its impact on women and members of the LGBTQ+ community and examining the relationship between debt and social reproduction. Exploring the link between financial activity and the rise of conservative forces in Latin America, the book demonstrates that debt is intimately linked to gendered violence and patriarchal notions of the family. Yet, rather than seeing these forces as insurmountable, the authors also show ways in which debt can be resisted, drawing on concrete experiences and practices from Latin America and around the world. Featuring interviews with women in Argentina and Brazil, the book reveals the real-life impact of debt and how it falls mainly on the shoulders of women, from the household to the wider effects of national debt and austerity. However, through discussions around experiences of work, prisons, domestic labour, agriculture, family, abortion and housing, a narrative of resistance emerges. Quelle: Verlag

    Abstract: Was können feministische Perspektiven für die kritische Erforschung von Sicherheit(spolitiken) leisten? Die AutorInnen zeigen mit theoretischen und empirischen Beiträgen die Stärke und Wichtigkeit einer geschlechtssensiblen Perspektive auf das Thema der Sicherheit, welche auch über die politikwissenschaftliche Debatte hinausreicht. Dabei hinterfragen die Autorinnen tradierte Sicherheitskonzeptionen und erweitern das Verständnis von Krieg, Gewalt und Sicherheit, indem sie die Geschlechterverhältnisse einbeziehen. Besonders die Bedeutung von Ökonomie, Recht und Flucht wird im Zusammenhang von Geschlecht und Sicherheit berücksichtigt. Ferner ergänzen sie die bislang verhaltene deutschsprachige Diskussion um internationale Perspektiven. Der Sammelband besteht aus einem einleitenden Teil und drei inhaltlich gegliederten Teilen: Die beiden einführenden Beiträge fächern die Themengebiete und Fragestellungen auf, die aus der Verknüpfung von Sicherheitsstudien und Geschlechterstudien hervorgehen. Im ersten inhaltlichen Teil des Bandes werden die Herausforderungen einer feministischen Perspektive auf Sicherheitsfragen aufgrund struktureller, vor allem politisch-ökonomischer Analysen deutlich. Unter dem Titel ‚Sicherheit, Recht und Advocacy’ widmet sich der zweite Teil des Bandes der Rolle des Rechts in der Umsetzung von Sicherheit in Konflikt- und Postkonfliktgesellschaften.     Abstract: The U.S. has the worst rate of maternal deaths in the developed world, a rate that is increasing, even as infant mortality rates decrease. Meanwhile, the right-wing assault on reproductive rights and bodily autonomy has also escalated. We can already glimpse a reality where embryos and fetuses have more rights than the people gestating them, and even women who aren't pregnant are seen first and foremost as potential incubators. In Belabored, journalist Lyz Lenz lays bare the misogynistic logic of U.S. cultural narratives about pregnancy, tracing them back to our murky, potent cultural soup of myths, from the religious to the historical. In the present she details, with her trademark blend of wit, snark, and raw intimacy, how sexist assumptions inform our expectations for pregnant people, whether we're policing them, asking them to make sacrifices with dubious or disproven benefits, or putting them up on a pedestal in an "Earth mother" role. Throughout, she reflects on her own experiences of being seen as alternately a vessel or a goddess-but hardly ever as herself-while carrying each of her two children. Belabored is an urgent call for us to embrace new narratives around pregnancy and the choice whether or not to have children, emphasizing wholeness and agency, and to reflect those values in our laws, medicine, and interactions with each other.

    Abstract: "Since the 1994 democratic elections, South Africa has been celebrated internationally for the remarkable advances of women in political office. The country continues to be near the top of global rankings for the number of women in parliament, and women are increasingly serving in local government, provincial parliaments, and educational institutions, which has inspired sweeping and progressive legislation dealing with women's advancement. Yet, despite these gains, South Africa continues to fall short, as the country is plagued by remarkably high levels of sexual assault, rape, and intimate-partner violence. This gendered violence is acted out time and again in public forums, like the trials of Jacob Zuma, the then-deputy president of the ruling party, who was accused of rape, and later Oscar Pistorius, the Paralympic track star who shot and killed his girlfriend.
    Abstract: Hannah Britton argues that the discrepancy between women in political power and gendered violence illuminates the limitations of carceral approaches to feminism, which attempts to solve social problems like gender-based violence by arresting, prosecuting, and punishing perpetrators. Based on fieldwork conducted over twenty years in nine South African communities, Britton has identified accelerants of gender-based violence, traced how gender-based violence is part of larger social inequalities, and delineated what policies are working and what are failing. The book analyzes how street-level bureaucrats, community activists, feminist advocates, traditional leaders, and religious leaders are working to build networks to address the gender-based violence in their communities.
    Abstract: She finds several key characteristics that enable communities to engage with anti-gender violence politics: police, as leaders and partners; people, as individual leaders who will break with patriarchal norms; points of contact, which provide victim services; and place, or the proximity to these services. These characteristics illustrate that the ultimate success or failure of the movement to end gender-based violence starts with communities"--
