    Abstract: "The links between Buddhism and medicine have lately received much attention in English-language academic, scientific, and popular media alike thanks to the increasing visibility of meditation, but all of these discussions have thus far failed to contextualize these developments within a larger historical framework. In fact, it turns out that the history of Buddhist engagement with various aspects of medicine is as old as the history of Buddhism itself. In all periods and all locations across the world, Buddhism has provided individuals with intellectual tools to frame and understand illness, has shaped health-seeking behaviors in conscious and unconscious ways, and has offered a range of popular therapies and institutional structures for dealing with the sick. This history is complex, involving multiple intertwining threads. Health and illness were common concerns in the earliest Buddhist texts, which drew heavily on existing medical traditions circulating in ancient India. Carried across geographic, cultural, and linguistic boundaries, these ideas and practices became an integral part of the spread of the religion across Asia in the ancient and medieval periods. Transregionally transmitted Buddhist knowledge formed the nucleus for the development of local forms of traditional medicine that still thrive today in many parts of Asia. The dynamics of reception in each of the cultures that received the Buddhist transmission were different and involved complex processes of translation that were always embedded in local social and political contexts. Consequently, particular configurations of Buddhist healing differ markedly from culture to culture. This diversity notwithstanding, certain global patterns have persisted in the history of Buddhist medicine. Many of the key texts in the medical canons of cultures across Asia are attributed to a handful of Buddhist figures. Today, Buddhist traditions, healers, and institutions continue to exert a tangible impact on medical care in societies both inside and outside Asia"--

    Abstract: From a single merchant's list of baggage begins a history that explores the dynamic world of medieval Indian Ocean exchanges. This fresh and innovative perspective on Jewish merchant activity shows how this list was a component of broader trade connections that developed between the Islamic Mediterranean and South Asia in the Middle Ages. Drawing on a close reading of this unique twelfth-century document, found in the Cairo Genizah and written in India by North African merchant Abraham Ben Yiju, Lambourn focuses on the domestic material culture and foods that structured the daily life of such India traders, on land and at sea. This is an exploration of the motivations and difficulties of maintaining homes away from home, and the compromises that inevitably ensued.     Abstract: Toby Matthiesen traces the politics of the Shia in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia from the nineteenth century until the present day. This book outlines the difficult experiences of being Shia in a Wahhabi state, and casts new light on how the Shia have mobilised politically to change their position. Shia petitioned the rulers, joined secular opposition parties and founded Islamist movements. Most Saudi Shia opposition activists profited from an amnesty in 1993 and subsequently found a place in civil society and the public sphere. However, since 2011 a new Shia protest movement has again challenged the state. The Other Saudis shows how exclusionary state practices created an internal Other and how sectarian discrimination has strengthened Shia communal identities. The book is based on little-known Arabic sources, extensive fieldwork in Saudi Arabia and interviews with key activists. Of immense geopolitical importance, the oil-rich Eastern Province is a crucial but little known factor in regional politics and Gulf security

    Abstract: Arguing that intellectual movements, such as deconstruction, postsecular theory, and political theology, have different implications for cultures and societies that live with the debilitating effects of past imperialisms, Arvind Mandair unsettles the politics of knowledge construction in which the category of "religion" continues to be central. Through a case study of Sikhism, he launches an extended critique of religion as a cultural universal. At the same time, he presents a portrait of how certain aspects of Sikh tradition were reinvented as "religion" during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. India's imperial elite subtly recast Sikh tradition as a sui generis religion, which robbed its teachings of their political force. In turn, Sikhs began to define themselves as a "nation" and a "world religion" that was separate from, but parallel to, the rise of the Indian state and global Hinduism. Rather than investigate these processes in isolation from Europe, Mandair shifts the focus closer to the political history of ideas, thereby recovering part of Europe's repressed colonial memory

    Abstract: This series of interlinked essays takes the form of historical 'voyages' around the Victorian intellectual John Henry Newman, and Newman's classic work The Idea of a University, as well as changes in the structure and culture of universities which occurred in Newman's lifetime. The voyages connect nineteenth- and twentieth-century university history, mainly in Britain and the United States but with side excursions to continental Europe. Among the many important topics discussed are the history of student communities in Oxford and Cambridge, the growth of a modern examinations culture, university architecture and the use of space in connection with educational ideals, urbanism and universities, and the competition of states, markets and academic guilds for the control of universities and the right to define the missions of university professors
