Abstract: "The Routledge Handbook in the History and Sociology of Ideas establishes a new and comprehensive way of working in the history and sociology of ideas, in order to obviate several longstanding gaps that have prevented a fruitful interdisciplinary and international dialogues. Pushing global intellectual history forward, it uses methodological innovations in the history of concepts, gender history, imperial history, and history of normativity, many of which have emerged out of intellectual history in recent years, and it especially foregrounds the role of field theory for delimiting objects of study but also in studying transnational history and migration of persons and ideas. The chapters also explore how intellectual history crosses the study of particular domains: law, politics, economy, science, life sciences, social and human sciences, book history, literature, and emotions"--...

Abstract: "Far-Right Ecologism explains how the ongoing mainstreaming of the far right has prompted greater engagement with a range of topics, including the environment. Behind the façade of vote-winning strategies, the far right has provided a substantive ideological engagement with the natural environment. Building on the nationalist bent of early green thought and the perceived nexus of pristine nature and cultural purity, Far-Right Ecologism has ideologically adopted the green elements of other ideologies, such as conservatism and fascism, but also of those considered to be 'thin-centred', such as nationalism and populism. Through an authentic experience of learning from the Eastern European, post-socialist realms, this book explores the ideology, ecological discourse, and policy proposals behind the increasing impact of far-right actors on environmental politics in Hungary and Poland. Each chapter begins with stories from the interviewees to illustrate how the far right in Hungary and Poland attempts to permeate environmental politics and even forge partnerships with green actors through specific, local-based policy contributions. Drawing on the findings from a range of sources, such as electoral programs, ideological texts and manifestos, social media and public speeches, policy proposals, and more than forty in-depth interviews with far-right representatives, this book also assesses epistemological and methodological challenges in examining the environmental dimension of far-right, post-socialist politics. The book will be valuable reading for researchers with an interest in the far right, environmental politics and Central Eastern Europe"--...

Abstract: "This book is an exploration of media scandals in contemporary Japanese society. Shedding new light on the study of scandal in Japan, the book offers a novel view of scandal as a specific social ritual which follows moral disturbances in Japanese society. Society and culture are analyzed largely in terms of social performances, while the focus is on how Japanese transgressors talk and act when explaining their scandals to the public. A detailed analysis of three case studies is provided: the drug scandal of the popular Japanese celebrity Sakai Noriko from 2009, the political donation scandal from 2009 centering the heavyweight politician Ozawa Ichiro, and the Olympus accounting fraud revealed by the British CEO Michael Woodford in 2011. This book will appeal to students and scholars of Japanese culture and society, anthropology, communication and media studies"--...

Abstract: This dissertation from the field of Reflexive Bibliometrics, investigates the constitutive effects of utilizing quantitative metrics in research evaluation on knowledge production and research quality in astronomy. Embedded in the Rational Choice Framework to analyze the structural conditions within academic astronomy, a qualitative analysis reveals an "Evaluation Gap" between what metrics measure and researchers' perceptions of research quality. Furthermore, the analysis unveils a balancing act where astronomers navigate compromises between publication pressures and research integrity. Subsequent quantitative analyses, incorporating Organizational Culture Theories and Self-Determination Theory, demonstrate that controlled forms of motivation exacerbate publication pressure and scientific misconduct, while autonomous motivations yield contrasting effects. Lastly, the study outlines pathways towards transforming research culture towards greater diversity and participation, including the adoption of open knowledge management infrastructures and continuous, reflexive evaluation processes.

Abstract: "This book is an ethnography of the people migrating through the Balkan route and the reaction of the local communities who witnessed their struggle to reach the European Union. Based on extensive fieldwork conducted in North Macedonia and Serbia, it pays special attention to the "refugee crisis", that gave birth to a new border regime based on a permanent suspension of laws, normalisation of violence, and the entrapment of migrants stranded in a liminal space at the gates to the EU, neither able to go further nor back. The book will appeal to an international audience of academics of migration studies, social and political science, and the wider public interested in migration and social and political changes in Southeast Europe"--...

Abstract: "In the world of online dating, race-based discrimination is not only tolerated, but encouraged as part of a pervasive belief that it is simply a neutral, personal choice about one's romantic partner. Indeed, it is so much a part of our inherited wisdom about dating and romance that it actually directs the algorithmic infrastructures of most major online dating platforms, such that they openly reproduce racist and sexist hierarchies. In, Not My Type: Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating, Apryl Williams presents a socio-technical exploration of dating platforms' algorithms, their lack of transparency, the legal and ethical discourse in these companies' community guidelines, and accounts from individual users in order to argue that sexual racism is a central feature of today's online dating culture. She discusses this reality in the context of facial recognition and sorting software as well as user experiences, drawing parallels to the long history of eugenics and banned interracial partnerships. Ultimately, Williams calls for, both a reconceptualization of the technology and policies that govern dating agencies, and also a reexamination of sociocultural beliefs about attraction, beauty, and desirability"--

Abstract: As the competing demands of care and paid work become increasingly complex, has there ever been a more challenging time to be a woman and a mother? Comparing two studies conducted across two generations, Motherhood explores women's experiences of becoming first-time mothers. Through richly narrated, real-time accounts of transition, Tina Miller examines what has changed since her original study was conducted twenty-one years ago. Using sociological and feminist perspectives, she analyses how motherhood has further intensified against a harsher neoliberal backdrop. The book examines the social, political and moral contours in which motherhood is situated which, in the contemporary context, include ideas of planned labours and work/life balance as part of potent, maternal prenatal imaginings. Birth continues to change everything, and the qualitative, longitudinal and comparative data show these ideas to be, mostly, illusory.

Abstract: This book seeks to expand some of the existing, often western and Global North facing, scholarship in the area of Disability and Media Studies to include African perspectives. Featuring predominantly Africa-based contributors, it studies an array of topics on disability and media in Africa, including issues of social media, media ethics, including marginalised voices in the media, and disability representation in the media. Tafadzwa Rugoho PhD is currently at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He was a lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University in the Department of Development Studies. Tafadzwa holds an MA in Policy Studies, an MSc in Development, an MSc in Strategic Management and a BSc in Sociology. He has authored more than 25 book chapters as well as a number of journal papers on disability issues. Tafadzwa has presented several papers at local and international research conferences in this area over the past five years. Tafadzwa is also a guest lecturer at the University of Pretoria, where he teaches Sexuality and social media. He coauthored a book titled Sexual and Reproductive Health of Adolescents with Disabilities.

Abstract: "This book explores the attitudes of Polish migrants towards the United Kingdom's departure from the European Union and considers possible return migration trajectories that may result. Based on quantitative sociological research conducted in Britain, it investigates the perceptions of Polish people in Britain and asks what they consider the likely consequences of Brexit to be for their personal, family, and professional lives, the central question being the dilemma of whether to remain abroad or return to Poland. A multifaceted approach to understanding the views of a significant migrant group when presented with considerable social and economic changes, Polish Return Migration after Brexit also offers forecasts of likely outcomes for institutions involved with Polish migrants and employers in Poland. It will therefore appeal to scholars of sociology and geography with interests in migration and diaspora studies, as well as to those working in the field of migration policy"--...

Abstract: "This handbook presents a foundational collection of core theoretical, methodological, and applied works that constitute and illustrate critical intercultural communication studies. With these core pieces in one book, scholars gain a defining assemblage of pieces that define critical intercultural communication from key intercultural communication and critical scholars. Moreover, these essays are bound together in a book structure that scaffolds up from foundation to application and allows for reflection and connection among sections and pieces. Even after ten years, this one-stop defining collection is more appealing than piecing together separate articles over time. No other comprehensive collection of essays defines, delineates, and constitutes critical intercultural communication studies"--...

Abstract: Throughout their careers, social scientists must come up with compelling research topics, decide when and where to publish, and revise their manuscripts for publication. Despite the importance of these skills, they are seldom if ever addressed in the course of graduate training. Heavy emphasis is placed on conducting research, and other core activities such as teaching also receive attention, yet fundamental academic practices are left almost entirely in the shadows.Practicing Sociology brings together a range of leading sociologists to reflect on their work and demystify this tacit knowledge. In conversational and engaging essays, they provide practical guidance and hard-won wisdom for readers at any stage of their scholarly careers. The book's three sections explore the art of finding new research questions, best practices in publishing, and how to make the most out of the peer review process. Contributors' distinctive voices come through as they recount their frustrations and failures as well as the joys of the sociological craft. They provide a range of perspectives, underscoring that there is no one "right" way to practice sociology but a constellation of different approaches that together give the field its vitality.Practicing Sociology features a team of skilled scholars including Peter Bearman, Paul J. DiMaggio, Wendy Espeland, Marion Fourcade, Shamus Rahman Khan, Eric Klinenberg, Michèle Lamont, Jennifer Lee, Mignon Moore, Mario Small, Duncan Watts, and many more

Abstract: Survey research is in a state of crisis. People have become less willing to respond to polls and recent misses in critical elections have undermined the field's credibility. Pollsters have developed many tools for dealing with the new environment, an increasing number of which rely on risky opt-in samples. Virtually all of these tools require that respondents in each demographic category are a representative sample of all people in each demographic category, something that is unlikely to be reliably true. Polling at a Crossroads moves beyond such strong limitations, providing tools that work even when survey respondents are unrepresentative in complex ways. This book provides case studies that show how to avoid underestimating Trump support and how conventional polls exaggerate partisan differences. This book also helps us think in clear and sometimes counterintuitive ways and points toward simple, low-cost changes that can better address contemporary polling challenges.

Abstract: "This landmark volume of extensive empirical research conducted across Europe explains how, and why, young people become engaged in radical(ising) milieus but also resist radicalisation into violent extremism. Offering a critical perspective on the concept of radicalisation, this volume views it from the perspective of social actors who engage in radicalising milieus but for the most part have not crossed the threshold into violent extremism. It brings together contributions conducted as part of a cross-European (including France, Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Russia, Turkey, the UK, and beyond) study of young people's engagement in 'extreme right' and 'Islamist' milieus. It argues that radicalisation is best understood as a relational concept reflecting a social process rooted in relational inequalities but also shaped by interactional and situational dynamics, which not only facilitate but also constrain radicalisation"--

Abstract: "This cutting-edge and authoritative Handbook covers a broad spectrum of social movement research methodologies, offering expert analysis and detailed accounts of the ways in which research can effectively be carried out on social movements and popular protests. Addressing practice-oriented questions, this Handbook engages with both theoretical and political dimensions, unpacking the multidimensional nature of social movement research. Divided into three thematic sections, this stimulating Handbook dives deep into discussions relating to the methodological challenges raised by researching social movements, the technical question of how such research is conducted, and then to more practical considerations about the uses and applications of movement research. Expert contributors and established researchers utilise real-world examples to explore the methodological challenges from a range of perspectives including classical, engaged, feminist, Black, Indigenous and global Southern viewpoints. The Handbook of Research Methods and Applications for Social Movements will not only appeal to experienced researchers, but also to activists who have started to think about researching their own movements and to politically engaged students. It speaks to new and established scholars in relevant disciplines such as sociology, political science, anthropology, geography, development studies, gender studies, and race and ethnic studies, and particularly those looking to better appreciate the different research methods for understanding social movements"--

Abstract: "This is both the first systematic introduction to Discourse Studies for students and scholars of social movements and a study of discourses on the European "refugee crisis", by leading theorist, Teun A. van Dijk. Concrete examples of different kinds of discourse are vital for the study of social movements because their activities are not limited to such well-known forms of contention as marches, occupations or strikes, but also daily discursive activities, such as meetings, assemblies, interviews, press conferences, manifestos, pamphlets, banners, graffiti, websites, blogs, social media posts and everyday talk. This book proposes that empirical analyses of these discourses should go beyond the popular but vague notion of "frame" and engage in more detailed and explicit analyses of the text and talk of social movements. This is a much-needed introduction to the most important structures of discourse and a detailed theoretical account of the notion of "solidarity" defining the Refugees Welcome movement"--...

Abstract: A humanist manifesto for the age of AIArtificial intelligence may be the most transformative technology of our time. As AI’s power grows, so does the need to figure out what—and who—this technology is really for. AI Needs You argues that it is critical for society to take the lead in answering this urgent question and ensuring that AI fulfills its promise.Verity Harding draws inspiring lessons from the histories of three twentieth-century tech revolutions—the space race, in vitro fertilization, and the internet—to empower each of us to join the conversation about AI and its possible futures. Sharing her perspective as a leading insider in technology and politics, she rejects the dominant narrative, which often likens AI’s advent to that of the atomic bomb. History points the way to an achievable future in which democratically determined values guide AI to be peaceful in its intent; to embrace limitations; to serve purpose, not profit; and to be firmly rooted in societal trust.AI Needs You gives us hope that we, the people, can imbue AI with a deep intentionality that reflects our best values, ideals, and interests, and that serves the public good. AI will permeate our lives in unforeseeable ways, but it is clear that the shape of AI’s future—and of our own—cannot be left only to those building it. It is up to us to guide this technology away from our worst fears and toward a future that we can trust and believe in

Abstract: Black communities have been making major contributions to Europe's social and cultural life and landscapes for centuries. However, their achievements largely remain unrecognized by the dominant societies, as their perspectives are excluded from traditional modes of marking public memory. For the first time in European history, leading Black scholars and activists examine this issue - with first-hand knowledge of the eight European capitals in which they live. Highlighting existing monuments, memorials, and urban markers they discuss collective narratives, outline community action, and introduce people and places relevant to Black European history, which continues to be obscured today.

Abstract: Foundations and mechanisms of Islamophobia in the WestIslamophobia as a Form of Radicalisation discusses the scope and fragmented boundaries of Islamophobia as a concept and a sociopolitical reality. The fifteen chapters of this collection cover and connect interdisciplinary research, media content analysis, media discourse analysis, ethnographic research, intersectoral advocacy work, and action research conducted in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, and Spain. Confronted with an Islamophobia that is growing as a symptom of broader societal malaise in the West, a resistance against it is also arising. It is now a question of better understanding the foundations and mechanisms of this metasolidarity and resistance. Islamophobia as a Form of Radicalisation offers recommendations for urgent consideration by Muslim citizens of Canada and Europe, media professionals, civil society and academic stakeholders, policymakers at the municipal, provincial and federal levels.Contributors: Abdelwahed Mekki-Berrada (Laval University), Alexander Van Leuven (KU Leuven), Alfonso Corral (San Jorge University), Alfredo Brant (Catholic University of Portugal), Anna Flora Machado (Catholic University of Portugal), Anabelle Vanier-Clément (SHERPA University Institute), Ann Trappers (Foyer VZW), Ans De Nolf (KU Leuven), Antonio Prieto-Andrés (San Jorge University), Ashley S. Abstract: More than a decade after the birth of contemporary social movements in the Middle East and North Africa scholars are asking what these movements have achieved and how we should evaluate their lasting legacies. The quiet encroachments of MENA counterrevolutionary forces in the post-Arab Spring era have contributed to the revival of an outdated Orientalist discourse of Middle East exceptionalism, implying that the region's culture is exceptionally immune to democratic movements, values, and institutions. This volume, inspired by critical post-colonial/decolonial studies, and interdisciplinary perspectives of social movement theories, gender studies, Islamic studies, and critical race theory, challenges and demystifies the myth of "MENA Exceptionalism". Composted of three sections, the book first places MENA in the larger global context and sheds light on the impact of geopolitics on the current crises, showing how a postcolonial critique better explains the crisis of democratic social movements and the resilience of authoritarianism. The second section focuses on the unfinished projects of contemporary MENA social movements and their quest for freedom, social justice, and human dignity. Contributors examine specific cases of post-Islamist movements, the Arab youth, student, and other popular non-violent movements. In the final section, the book problematizes the exceptionalist idea of gender passivity and women's exclusion, which reduces the reality of gender injustice to some eternal and essentialized Muslim/MENA mindset. Contributors address this theory by placing gender as an independent category of thought and action, demonstrating the quest for gender justice movements in MENA, and providing contexts to the cases of gender injustice to challenge simplistic, ahistorical and culturalist assumptions.

Abstract: Ella Myers looks at W.E.B. Du Bois's conceptualization of American whiteness to argue that his writings offer powerful insights into the rewards that white identity has offered to Americans, both in the past and present. Focusing on three key motifs found in his work - wage, pleasure, dominion - Myers shows that to Du Bois, whiteness is not one thing, but many. Highlighting how Du Bois can help us recognize contemporary whiteness as a multifaceted formation, this book explores the pressing contemporary issue of what it means to be white through the lens developed by a major Black thinker.

Abstract: This book focuses on the development of bilateral Jewish-Muslim relations in London and Amsterdam since the late-1980s. It offers a comparative analysis that considers both similarities and differences, drawing on historical, social scientific, and religious studies perspectives. The authors address how Jewish-Muslim relations are related to the historical and contemporary context in which they are embedded, the social identity strategies Jews and Muslims and their institutions employ, and their perceived mutual positions in terms of identity and power. The first section reflects on the history and current profile of Jewish and Muslim communities in London and Amsterdam and the development of relations between Jews andMuslims in both cities. The second section engages with sources of conflict and cooperation. Four specific areas that cause tension are explored: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; antisemitism and Islamophobia; attacks by extremists; and the commemoration of wars and genocides. In addition to ‘trigger events’, what stands out is the influence of historical factors, public opinion, the ‘mainstream’ Christian churches and the media, along with the role of government. The volume will be of interest to scholars from fields including religious studies, interfaith studies, Jewish studies, Islamic studies, urban studies, European studies, and social sciences as well as members of the communities concerned, other religious communities, journalists, politicians, and teachers who are interested in Jewish-Muslim relations.

Abstract: "Techno-logic & Technology is an ambitious effort to develop a new framework for the study of the development of stone tool technology, with the goal of integrating humanity's earliest and longest lasting technology into a comprehensive questioning of the interaction between humanity and the material world. Michael Chazan provides a translation of Eric Boëda's authoritative work Techno-logique and Technologie, that draws on his career of research on stone tool assemblages from archaeological sites in Europe, the Middle East, and China together with a theoretical apparatus influenced by the work of Gilbert Simondon. This book presents a major challenge to all archaeologists who study ancient technology to reconsider how we think about artifacts and how to approach the question of progress through time in human technology. Lithic analysis is a highly empirical field of study that rarely has an impact on issues of broad theoretical interest and Boëda's book is a welcome exception. As well as providing contextualising information within the text, the translator Michael Chazan, himself a Paleolithic archaeologist specializing in stone tool technology, includes an interview with the author to help equip the reader to engage with this challenging text. Chiming with the growth of interest in the work of Gilbert Simondon in the English-speaking world, this book is an important resource for Palaeolithic archaeologists and lithic specialists. It will also be of interest to researchers in material culture studies, technology studies and human evolution"--

Abstract: This book is about tax and social policy and how they interact with each other. The impact of taxation as an instrument of social policy is central in influencing redistribution and behaviour. This broad-based edited collection fills a significant gap in both literatures, bringing together disparate debates in this emerging area of analysis. It guides readers through the key interactions of tax and social policies and the central debates and challenges posed by their effect on each other. It examines how analyses might be combined and policy options developed for more effective delivery and impact in both areas

Abstract: Often portrayed as an apolitical space, this book demonstrates that home is in fact a highly political concept, with a range of groups in society excluded from a 'right to home' under current UK policies. Drawing on resident interviews and analysis of political and media attitudes across three case studies - the criminalisation of squatting, the bedroom tax, and family homelessness - it explores the ways in which legislative and policy changes dismantle people's rights to secure, decent and affordable housing by framing them as undeserving. The book includes practical lessons for housing academics, activists and policymakers

Abstract: This dissertation leverages the heterogeneity in gender role attitudes in the German population to investigate if individual attitudes towards gender roles can explain the gradual loss of relevance of marriage. Using event history analysis on data from the PAIRFAM survey, I test if and how gender role attitudes influence the likelihood of marrying in three empirical studies. Chapter 3 offers a cross-sectional assessment of the empirical relationship between gender role attitudes and marital behavior. Gender role attitudes are in the sample correlated with the timing and likelihood of marriage. Respondents expressing traditionalist or conservative attitudes are more likely to marry than liberals and egalitarians. Chapter 4 investigates the relationship with a longitudinal outlook, exploring the effect of attitude change over time. Here I show that respondents whose attitudes are more stable over time tend to be more likely to marry, while frequent changes in gender role attitudes correlate with later and less likely transitions to marriage. Chapter 5 focuses on both partners, investigating how couples with gender attitudes that are coherent differ from mismatched couples. I show that sharing a common attitude is uncorrelated to more likely marriages. However, couples who start with different attitudes and reach a shared one are more likely to marry. This dissertation contributes to the current literature by exploring the connection between attitudes and marriage. By applying micro-level theories of action and transposing macro-level theories of demographic change at the individual and couple level, I show that gender role attitudes are indeed a potential driver of demographic change through their role in shaping the likelihood of marriage, offering a potential mechanism of transmission for macro-level theories of change.

Abstract: "Visual Research Methods in the Social Sciences: Awakening Visions is an indispensable resource for students, researchers and teachers seeking to use visual sources in their research and understand how images work. This fully updated edition adds questions and activities for studies and many new images and models as well as additional exploration of social and theoretical contexts and examples of current visual and multimodal research. Due to the proliferation of image-centric social media and the growing potential for 'fake news', being able to critically assess media and other visual messages is more important than ever. For researchers embarking on visual research this book offers useful practical guidance and real-world examples from seasoned researchers exploring cultures as varied as: religious cults in Venezuela, The Beer Can Regatta in Darwin, Mapuche Indians in Chile and graffiti artists in Sheffield. It offers an integrated approach to visual research, building compelling case studies using a wide range of visual forms including: archive images, media samples, maps, objects, video, photographs, and drawings alongside traditional qualitative approaches. Examples of the visual construction of 'place', representations of social identities and different approaches to analysis are explored in the first section of the book, whilst the essays in the second section highlight the creativity and innovation of four leading visual researchers. This new edition will prove valuable for both experienced visual researchers and those embarking on visual research in the social sciences for the first time"--

Abstract: This thesis deals with methods for the appropriate handling of non-ignorable missing data and sample selection, which are two common challenges of survey data analysis. Both issues can dramatically affect the quality of analysis results and lead to misleading inferences about the population. Therefore, in three different research articles, I treat methods for the performance of so-called sensitivity analyses with regards to the missing data and selection mechanism that are usable with typical survey data. In the first and second article, I provide novel procedures for the multiple imputation of binary and ordinal multilevel data that are supposed to be Missing not At Random (MNAR). The methods’ suitability to produce unbiased and efficient estimates could be demonstrated in various simulation studies considering different data scenarios. Moreover, I could show their applicability to empirical data. In the third article, I investigate a measure to quantify and adjust non-ignorable selection bias in proportions estimated based on non-probabilistic data. In doing so, I provide the first application of the suggested index to a real non-probability sample outside its original research group. In addition, I derive general guidelines for its usage in practice, and validate the measure’s performance in properly detecting selection bias. The three presented articles highlight the necessity to assess the sensitivity of estimates towards different assumptions about the missing-data and selection mechanism if it seems realistic that the ignorability assumption might be violated, and provide first solutions to enable such robustness checks for specific data situations.

Abstract: Detroit’s shrinking size has resulted in an overabundance of single-family homes in this single-family home metropolis. On the one hand, the abandoned houses have led to Detroit being declared bankrupt, while on the other hand, it has paved the way for other ways of working and living with and using houses and vacant lots that may not make an immediate profit on the real estate market and may be considered “unreal” estate (Herscher, 2012), but that keep people together as a neighborhood and community. This thesis looks at the circumstances in which residents become homeowners and how as homeowners, artists and immigrants ascribe value to single-family homes and how they make place with their homes in a neighborhood context. The focus is on homeowners’ everyday practices that determine the value of single-family homes when the latter is not considered use value or economic value in a real estate market, but recognized as a social and cultural value.

Abstract: The size and availability of network information has exploded over the last decade. Social scientists now share the stage of network analysis with computer scientists, physicists, and statisticians. While a number of introductions to network analysis are now available, most focus on theory, methods, or application alone. This book integrates all three. Network Analysis is an introduction to both the why and how of Social Network Analysis (SNA). It presents a broad theoretical overview rooted in social scientific approaches and guides users in how network analysis can answer core theoretical questions. It provides a comprehensive overview of descriptive and analytical approaches, including practical tutorials in R with sample data sets. Using an integrated approach, this book aims to quickly bring novice network researchers up to speed while avoiding common programming and analysis mistakes so that they might gain insight into the fundamental theories, key concepts, and methodological application of SNA.

What is 'toxic masculinity'? Examining what it means in the media and public discourse, the contributors have explored a constellation of behaviours, cultures, and practices that have been labelled as (or associated with) toxic masculinity including those of politicians, extremists, incels, as well as individual 'ordinary' men and their everyday behaviours. Topics covered in the collection include: Incels and MGTOW, bro culture, sexual violence, internalised homophobia, transphobia, white masculinity, and political discourse. Toxic Masculinity is intended for a broad spectrum of gender, media, cultural, and masculinity studies professionals, academics, researchers, and students. Abstract: Dieter Rucht offers a theoretically and historically informed approach to social movements as a phenomenon of modern societies. He links the analysis of social movements to general theories of society and processes of social change, and combines three basic perspectives: interactionist, constructivist, and process-oriented (ICP-approach).

Abstract: Everyday life as we knew it is increasingly challenged in a world of climate, social, health and political crisis. Emerging technologies, data analytics and automation open up new possibilities which have implications for energy generation, storage and energy demand. To support these changes we urgently need to rethink how energy will be sourced, shared and used. Yet existing approaches to this problem, driven by engineering, data analytics and capital, are dangerously conservative and entrenched. Energy Futures critically evaluates this context, and the energy infrastructures, stakeholders, and politics that participate in it, to propose plausible, responsible and ethical modes of encountering possible energy futures. Imagining anthropocene challenges, emerging technologies and everyday life otherwise through empirically grounded studies, opens up possible energy futures. Energy Futures proposes and demonstrates a new critical and interventional futures-oriented energy anthropology. Combining the theories and methods of futures anthropology with the critical expertise and perspectives of energy anthropology creates a powerful mode of engagement, which this book argues is needed to disrupt the dominant narratives about our energy futures. Its contributors collectively reveal and evidence through innovative ethnographic practice how new knowledge about imagined and possible energy futures can be mobilised in engagements with emerging technologies, anthropocene challenges and everyday realities. In doing so it brings together authors, analytical expertise and ethnographic evidence from the global south, north and places in between, generated through innovative methodologies including remote video and comic strip methods and documentary video practice as well as long term fieldwork

Abstract: "This field-defining collection establishes unfinished film projects--abandoned, interrupted, lost, or open-ended--as rich and underappreciated resources for feminist film and media studies. In a series of deeply researched and creatively conceived chapters, scholars join with film practitioners in approaching the unfinished film as an ideal site for revealing the lived experiences, practical conditions, and institutional realities of women's film production across historical periods and national borders. Incomplete recovers projects and practices marginalized in film industries and scholarship alike, while also showing how feminist filmmakers have cultivated incompletion as an aesthetic strategy. Objects of loss and of possibility, incomplete films raise profound historiographical and ethical questions about the always-unfinished project of film history, film spectatorship, and film studies"--

Abstract: This autotheoretical Element, written in the tense space between feminist and trans theory, argues that movement between 'woman' and 'nonbinary' is possible, affectively and politically. In fact, a nonbinary structure of feeling has been central in the history of feminist thought, such as in Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex (1949). This structure of feeling is not antifeminist but indexical of a desire for a form of embodiment and relationality beyond binary sex and gender. Finally, the Element provides a partial defense of nonbinary gender identity by tracing the development of the term in online spaces of the early 2000s. While it might be tempting to read its development as symptomatic of the forms of selfhood reproduced in (neo)liberal, racialized platform capitalism, this reading is too simplistic because it misses how the term emerged within communities of care.

Abstract: In the eighteenth century, the printing press enabled the rise of an independent press--the Fourth Estate--that helped check the power of governments, business, and industry. In similar ways, the internet is enabling the empowerment of a more independent collectivity of networked individuals--the Fifth Estate. Dutton uses estate theory to illuminate the most important power shift of the digital age. He argues that this network power shift is not only enabling greater democratic accountability in politics and governance but is also empowering networked individuals in their everyday life and work.

Abstract: The socio-economic and political uncertainties of Kenya in the 1990s jeopardised what many saw as the promises of modernity. An increasing number of Kenyans migrated, many to Britain, a country that felt familiar from Kenyan history. Based on extensive fieldwork in Kenya and the United Kingdom, Leslie Fesenmyer's work provides a rich, historically nuanced study of the kinship dilemmas that underlie transnational migration and explores the dynamic relationship between those who migrate and those who stay behind. Challenging a focus on changing modes of economic production, 'push-pull' factors, and globalisation as drivers of familial change, she analyses everyday trans-national family life. Relative Distance shows how quotidian interactions, exchanges, and practices transform kinship on a local and global scale. Through the prism of intergenerational care, Fesenmyer reveals that the question of who is responsible for whom is not only a familial matter but is at the heart of relations between individuals, societies, and states

Abstract: This is a pathbreaking book on how to talk about racism--not only Kant's racism but also racism more generally. It challenges the prevailing individualistic approach to Kant's racism and invites the reader to think about the issue in a more holistic, thoughtful, and transformative way. Using Kant as a case study, it shows that history is not just something to be read, but something we still live with, and that oftentimes we must see the past more clearly to bring about a better future.

Abstract: The Handbook of Teaching Qualitative and Mixed Research Methods: A Step-by-Step Guide for Instructors presents diverse pedagogical approaches to teaching 71 qualitative and mixed methods. These tried-and-true methods are widely applicable to those teaching and those being trained in qualitative and mixed-methods research. The methods for data collection cover ethics, sampling, interviewing, recording observations of behavior, Indigenous and decolonizing methods and methodologies as well as visual and participatory methods. Methods for analyzing data include coding and finding themes, exploratory and inductive analysis, linguistic analysis, mixed-methods analysis, and comparative analysis. Each method has its own 1,500-word lesson (i.e., chapter) written by expert methodologists from around the globe. In these lessons, contributors give the reader a brief history of the method and describe how they teach it by including their best practices--with succinct, step-by-step instructions--focusing on student-centered experiential and active learning exercises. This comprehensive, one-of a-kind text is an essential reference for instructors who teach qualitative and/or mixed methods across the Social and Behavioral Sciences and other related disciplines, including Anthropology, Sociology, Education, and Health/Nursing research

Abstract: Protest is urgently important to democracy. Here philosopher José Medina explains why it is so essential and explores the unfair obstacles and challenges that protest movements can face. Medina underscores how challenging it can be for protesting voices to be heard under conditions of oppression, and proposes ways in which the silencing of protest can be fought. Democracies are obligated to listen to protest and even to join protesting voices when grave injustices are in the public eye
