    Abstract: Die Forschung für diese Doktorarbeit wurde im Rahmen des ERC-Projekts „Realising Eurasia: Civilisation and Moral Economy in the 21st Century“ durchgeführt. Die vorliegende Dissertation legt besonderes Augenmerk auf die Perspektiven von kleinen (Familien-)Unternehmen und untersucht die materiellen und nicht-materiellen Prozesse, die das Entstehen und die Reproduktion dieser Unternehmen im postsozialistischen Ungarn kennzeichnen. Der empirische Fokus auf der Arbeit und den wirtschaftlichen Praktiken in kleinen Unternehmen eröffnet neue Einsichten in die Verbindung zwischen der Formierung von Werten und politisch-ökonomischen Prozessen. Die Dissertation verfolgt einen holistischen Ansatz, in dem verschiedene Theorien aus zwei Bereichen – politische Ökonomie und Sozialtheorien der Moral und Werte – als analytische Basis für die empirische Forschung über Alltagserfahrungen mit Arbeit und wirtschaftlichem Handeln zusammengebracht werden.
    Abstract: This PhD research was conducted as part of the project entitled ‘Realising Eurasia: Civilisation and Moral Economy in the 21st century’, which aimed to understand how morality and economy are entangled with each other from a new perspective.This dissertation focused on the perspectives of small (family) businesses in Szeged and examined both the material and non-material processes in which these businesses emerged and reproduced themselves in post-Socialist Hungary. The focus on work and economic practices in small businesses provided a unique angle on the study of the links between value formation and politico-economic processes both socially and empirically. In doing so, this PhD work utilized a holistic approach by bringing together various theories from two major domains: political economy, and social theories of morality and values that constituted the theoretical context for the dissertation’s empirical research into everyday experiences of work and economic activities.

    Abstract: In diese Dissertation untersuche ich der kritischen Schnittstellen zwischen sozialer Klasse und Ethnizität für die Herausbildung einer kollektiven Identität unter inländischen Arbeitsmigrant:innen in Shenzhen, China. Anhand ethnografischer Daten dokumentiere ich die Herausforderungen, die sich für die Repräsentation von Wanderarbeiter:innen als dominierte und ausgebeutete Subjekte in der politischen Ökonomie Chinas ergeben. Binnenmigrant:innen begegnen strukturellen Hindernissen, die durch die gesetzlichen und politischen Einschränkungen des angeblich in ihrem Namen handelnden Staates entstanden sind. Zudem wird die kollektive Identität der Arbeitsmigrant:innen durch die Han-Mehrheit minzu („Ethnie“ oder „Nationalität“) monopolisiert. Als „anders“ verstandene Minderheiten werden sie, wegen ihrer vermeintlichen Bedrohung für das Chinesentum diskriminiert und sogar exkludiert. Diese Dynamiken verleihen dem berühmten Marx’schen Diktum – „Sie können sich nicht vertreten, sie müssen vertreten werden“ eine neue Komplexität.
    Abstract: This dissertation explores the critical junctions of class and ethnicity in the development of a collective identity among internal migrants in Shenzhen, China. On the basis of ethnographic data collected in 2018-2019, I document the challenges to the representation of migrant labour in China’s political economy as a dominated and exploited subject. Internal migrant workers face structural challenges due to the legal and political constraints imposed by a state that claims to act in their name. Moreover, the collective identity of migrant workers has been monopolised by Han majority minzu (‘ethnicity’ or ‘nationality’) who discriminate and even exclude minority others, who they see as challenging Chineseness. These dynamics provide new layers of complexity to Karl Marx’s famous dictum: ‘They cannot represent themselves, they must be represented.’

    Abstract: Diese Dissertation setzt sich kritisch mit den gängigen Berichten über florierende regionale Ökonomien in der Türkei auseinander, die unter dem Begriff "Anatolische Tiger" zusammengefasst werden. Basierend auf ethnographischer Feldforschung in der anatolischen Stadt Çorum untersucht diese Studie die Gründung, den Ausbau und den Fortbestand mittelständischer Unternehmen aus der Perspektive der politischen Ökonomie und der moralischen Ökonomie. Sie zeigt, dass die Bildung der Unternehmerschicht ein vielschichtiger Prozess ist und die Menschen als aktive Akteure bei der Gestaltung ihres Lebensunterhalts auftreten, in einer Weise, die für sie sinnstiftend ist. Die Studie gibt einen Einblick in den Alltag am Arbeitsplatz. Sie beleuchtet die Rolle von Verwandtschaft, Religion und sozialen Werten bei der Gestaltung der alltäglichen Arbeitspolitik und zeigt die Dynamik von gegenseitigen Verpflichtungen, Bevormundung, Herrschaft und Autonomie an zentralanatolischen Arbeitsplätzen.
    Abstract: This dissertation is a critical engagement with the mainstream accounts of thriving regional economies in Turkey commonly encapsulated in the term ‘Anatolian Tigers’. Based on twelve months fieldwork in the Anatolian city Çorum, this study explores the formation, expanding and sustaining of medium-size businesses with a dual optic of political economy and moral economy. It demonstrates that the formation of the entrepreneurial stratum is a multifaceted process and people are active agents in the making of their livelihood in ways that are meaningful to them. The study zooms into the everyday life in a range of workplaces. The ethnography sheds light on the role of kinship, religion, social values in shaping the everyday politics of labour and reveals the dynamics of the mutual obligations, paternalism, domination and autonomy in central Anatolian workplaces.

    Abstract: Auf der Basis einer ethnographischen Studie über private Kleinbetriebe in Smolensk untersucht die Dissertation die moralischen Dimensionen des russischen Kleinkapitalismus. Die moralischen Orientierungen von Geschäftsleuten werden mit den Veränderungen der lokalen und globalen politökonomischen Restrukturierungsprozesse in Bezug gesetzt. Es wird untersucht, wie veränderte Vorstellungen vom Individuum, des Verständnisses von moralischer Verantwortung und Verpflichtung sowie Auffassungen von Arbeit und Leistung im heutigen Russland mit dem Produktionsprozess und dem Kampf um soziale Reproduktion verbunden sind. Es wird argumentiert, dass die moralischen Orientierungen russischer Kleinunternehmer viele unterschiedliche und konfligierende Werte enthalten. Die komplexen Muster des konkreten wirtschaftlichen Verhaltens werden als Antwort auf den durch den Kapitalismus geschaffenen Druck auf die lokalen und globalen Verhältnisse interpretiert. Auf diese Weise können postsozialistische Entwicklungen in größere Prozesse der Akkumulation und Ausbreitung von Kapital eingeordnet werden.
    Abstract: Drawing on an ethnographic enquiry into the small-scale private sector in the city of Smolensk, this dissertation investigates the moral dimensions of Russian petty capitalism. It situates the moral frameworks of businesspeople within the broader dynamics of local and global politico-economic restructurings by examining how changing ideas of personhood, understandings of moral responsibilities and obligations, and conceptions of work and labour are entangled in circuits of production and struggles for reproduction in present-day Russia. The dissertation argues that the moral frameworks of Russian entrepreneurs incorporate multiple discrete and conflicting values. It views such complexities in actual economic behaviour as responses to the local and global pressures that are generated by capitalism, thereby helping us to incorporate post-socialist developments into the larger processes of expansion and the accumulation of capital.

    Abstract: Basierend auf achtzehn Monaten ethnographischer Feldforschung in der Stadt Pathein (Myanmar) untersucht diese Arbeit wirtschaftliche Prozesse auf der Mikroebene. Besonders im Fokus stehen dabei Zusammenhänge zwischen wirtschaftlichen und moralischen Faktoren. Ausgangspunkt der Analysen ist die Perspektive von Selbstständigen, jedoch werden auch deren Verwandte, Angestellte und das weitere soziale Umfeld einbezogen. Die Ethnographie beschreibt eine Vielzahl an zusammenhängenden Themenkomplexen, darunter soziale Beziehungen in Kleinbetrieben, Kinderarbeit, Ethnizität, Verschuldung und soziale Unterstützungsmechanismen. Es wird gezeigt, dass trotz der weitreichenden Veränderungen, die das Land derzeit erfährt, Werte und Moralvorstellungen, die etwa durch den Buddhismus oder spezifische Verwandtschaftsideale geprägt sind, ihre Bedeutung beibehalten und mit neueren wirtschaftlichen Realitäten in ein Verhältnis gegenseitiger Beeinflussung treten.
    Abstract: Based on eighteen months of research in the lowland Myanmar town of Pathein, this book investigates manifold economic activities on the ground. Particular attention is paid to the self-employed and their relationships with relatives, workers, and community members. The ethnography covers a range of topics, including business formation and succession, recruitment, child labour, ethnicity, indebtedness and charity. It is demonstrated that, amidst rapidly changing socio-economic conditions, values rooted in kinship morality and Buddhism remain significant and continue to shape people’s economic reasoning and activities. These values und moral aspects stand in a dialectical relationship with changing economic realities.

    Abstract: Based on eleven months of ethnographic fieldwork, this book explores the experiences of childless women in contemporary urban Georgia and their perspectives on infertility and assisted reproduction. It examines how assisted reproductive technologies intersect with local beliefs about reproduction, kinship, and descent. The study takes into account a comprehensive definition of assisted reproduction, encompassing not only medical technologies but also non-biomedical healing practices. The primary focus of this research revolves around questions related to family planning, the conception of childlessness, and assisted reproduction in the context of people's cosmologies. It particularly delves into their understanding of kin relations and the significance of parenthood in Georgian society, as well as its connection to broader demographic patterns. In doing so, it engages with debates about the nature of kinship and the role of biogenetic substance in the anthropology of kinship.
    Abstract: Gestützt auf elf Monaten Feldforschung untersucht dieses Buch die Erfahrungen kinderloser Frauen im urbanen Georgien und ihren Umgang mit Unfruchtbarkeit und assistierter Reproduktion. Es analysiert, wie assistierte Reproduktionstechnologien mit den lokalen Vorstellungen von Reproduktion, Verwandtschaft und Deszendenz zusammenspielen. Als Grundlage wird eine weite Definition von assistierter Reproduktion vorgeschlagen, die nicht nur medizinische Technologien, sondern auch nicht-biomedizinische Heilpraktiken einschließt. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Forschung liegt auf Fragen zur Familienplanung, Vorstellungen von Kinderlosigkeit sowie assistierter Reproduktion im Kontext lokaler Kosmologien. Dabei wird insbesondere auf die Bedeutung von Verwandtschaft und Elternschaft sowie Verknüpfung mit allgemeineren demographischen Entwicklungen eingegangen. Damit schließt diese Arbeit an Diskurse zur Natur von Verwandtschaft und der Rolle biogenetischer Substanz in der Verwandtschaftsethnologie an.

    Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt und analysiert die Schaffung einer neuen religiösen Infrastruktur in der rumänischen Hauptstadt Bukarest seit dem Zusammenbruch des sozialistischen Regimes. Im Mittelpunkt steht als Fallbeispiel der Bau der „Kathedrale der Erlösung des Volkes“ (rumänisch: Catedrală Mântuirii Neamului) die im Dezember 2018 eingeweiht werden wird. Der Kirchenkomplex befindet sich in unmittelbarer Nähe zum bekanntesten Symbol der Stadt – dem Parlamentspalast, Wahrzeichen der kommunistischen Zeit unter Nicolae Ceauşescu. Der Fokus meiner Arbeit liegt dabei auf den wirtschaftlichen und politischen Machtstrukturen, die den Bau der bisher höchsten orthodoxen Kathedrale der Welt innerhalb eines Jahrzehnts ermöglichten. Anhand dieses Bauprojekts untersuche ich einerseits die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Kirche und Staat und wie sich diese in den letzten 25 Jahren herausbildeten, und andererseits die Strategien der Rumänisch-Orthodoxen Kirche zur Wiederherstellung ihrer Bedeutung im öffentlichen Bereich.
    Abstract: This thesis describes and analyzes the creation of religious infrastructure in Bucharest since the collapse of the socialist regime. The main case study is the construction of the "Cathedral of the Redemption of the People" (Romanian: Catedrală Mântuirii Neamului) which will be inaugurated in December 2018. The church complex is located in close proximity to the city's most famous symbol - the Palace of Parliament, landmark of the communist period under Nicolae Ceauşescu. The focus of my work is on the economic and political power structures that enabled the construction of the world's tallest Orthodox cathedral within a decade. Through this construction project, I examine, on the one hand, the complex relations between church and state and how these have evolved over the past 25 years, and, on the other hand, the Romanian Orthodox Church's strategies for restoring its prominence in the public sphere.

    Abstract: One Discipline, Four Ways offers the first book-length introduction to the history of each of the four major traditions in anthropology - British, German, French, and American. The result of lectures given by distinguished anthropologists Fredrik Barth, Andre Gingrich, Robert Parkin, and Sydel Silverman to mark the foundation of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, this volume not only traces the development of each tradition but considers their impact on one another and assesses their future potentials. Moving from E. B. Taylor all the way through the development of modern fieldwork, Barth reveals the repressive tendencies that prevented Britain from developing a variety of anthropological practices until the late 1960s. Gingrich, meanwhile, articulates the development of German anthropology, paying particular attention to the Nazi period, of which surprisingly little analysis has been offered until now. Parkin then assesses the French tradition and, in particular, its separation of theory and ethnographic practice. Finally, Silverman traces the formative influence of Franz Boas, the expansion of the discipline after World War II, and the "fault lines" and promises of contemporary anthropology in the United States.
