Abstract: Introduction -- Theoretical Background -- ‘Religion’ in Social Theory -- ‘The Secular’ in Sociology -- Social Construction of Secularisation Thesis -- Textbooks and Other Introductory Materials -- ‘Religion’ in Liquid Late Modernity of Risk Society -- Conclusion: Social Theory and Sociology after Deconstructing the Religious-Secular Binary
Abstract: Mitsutoshi Horii is Professor at Shumei University in Japan, and Principal of Chaucer College, UK. Informed by the ‘critical religion’ perspective in religious studies and postcolonial self-reflection in sociology, this book interrogates the ideas of ‘religion’ and ‘the secular’ in social theory and sociology. It argues that as long as social theory and sociological discourse embeds the religion-secular distinction and locates itself on the ‘secular’ side of the binary, sociology will continue to serve the very ideologies it tries to subvert – namely Western modernity/coloniality. Horii raises fundamental epistemological questions and deep ontological issues in the field of the sociology of religion.
Abstract: Innovative and provoking, the book will inspire the reader to discuss and question established concepts from new perspectives." —Per Pettersson, Professor of Sociology of Religion, Karlstad University, Sweden "This is a superb book that … calls into question sociology’s own understanding of itself as secular and ‘rational,’ distinguished from the ‘non-rational’ understandings of those it presents as other." —John Holmwood, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Nottingham, UK. "This book is a valuable contribution to the critical demystification of general categories that sustain the illusions on which the humanities and social sciences are based." —Timothy Fitzgerald, Honorary Research Associate Professor, Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Queensland, Australia, and Research Associate, the Center for Critical Research on Religion, USA.

Abstract: This book explores the ways in which religion is observed, performed, and organised in skateboard culture. Drawing on scholarship from the sociology of religion and the cultural politics of lifestyle sports, this work combines ethnographic research with media analysis to argue that the rituals of skateboarding provide participants with a rich cultural canvas for emotional and spiritual engagement. Paul O'Connor contends that religious identification in skateboarding is set to increase as participants pursue ways to both control and engage meaningfully with an activity that has become an increasingly mainstream and institutionalized sport. Religion is explored through the themes of myth, celebrity, iconography, pilgrimage, evangelism, cults, and self-help--back cover

Abstract: How do religious emotions and national sentiment become entangled across the world? In exploring this theme, The Secular Sacred focuses on diverse topics such as the dynamic roles of Carnival in Brazil, the public contestation of ritual in Northern Nigeria, and the culturalization of secular tolerance in the Netherlands. The contributions focus on the ways in which sacrality and secularity mutually inform, enforce, and spill over into each other. The case studies offer a bottom-up, practice-oriented approach in which the authors are wary to use categories of religion and secular as neutral descriptive terms. The Secular Sacred will be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists, ethnographers, political scientists, and social psychologists, as well as students and scholars of cultural studies and semiotics
