Abstract: This interdisciplinary collection of essays focuses on the ways in which movements of people across natural, political, and cultural boundaries shape identities that are inexorably linked to the geographical space that individuals on the move cross, inhabit, and leave behind. As conflicts over identities and space continue to erupt on a regular basis, this book reads the relationship between migration, identity, and space from a fresh and innovative perspective. Tabea Linhard is Professor of Spanish, Comparative Literature, and International Studies at Washington University in St. Louis, USA. Timothy H. Parsons holds a joint appointment as Professor of African History in the History Department and the African and African American Studies Department at Washington University in St. Louis, USA

Abstract: This book presents an in-depth fieldwork-based study of the Greek language spoken by immigrants in Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. The study analyzes language contact-induced changes and code switching patterns, by integrating perspectives from contact linguistics and interactional approaches to language use and code switching. Lexical and pragmatic borrowing, code mixing, discourse-related and participant-related code switching, and factors promoting language maintenance are among the topics covered in the book. The study brings to light original data from a speech community that has received no attention in the literature and sheds light on the variation of Greek spoken in diaspora. It will appeal across disciplines to scholars and students in linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and migration studies. Angeliki Alvanoudi is Lecturer at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and Adjunct Lecturer at the Language and Culture Research Centre, James Cook University, Australia. She is the author of Grammatical Gender in Interaction: Cultural and Cognitive Aspects (2014) and has published articles in the journals Gender and Language and Journal of Greek Linguistics

Abstract: This book examines how the shifts in the early 19th century in New York City affected children in particular. Indeed, one could argue that within this context, that “children” and “childhood” came into being. In order to explore this, the skeletal remains of the children buried at the small, local, yet politically radical Spring Street Presbyterian Church are detailed. Population level analyses are combined with individual biological profiles from sorted burials and individual stories combed from burial records and archival data. What emerges are life histories of children-of infants, toddlers, younger children, older children, and adolescents-during this time of transition in New York City. When combined with historical data, these life histories, for instance, tell us about what it was like to grow up in this changing time in New York City

Abstract: ‘This volume makes an important contribution to our knowledge about how teachers can combine research and practice in addressing classroom issues. Case studies show in detail how individual teachers employ diverse methods to understand their students and "transform their classrooms", and provide us with rich insider accounts of teacher learning.’ -Adrian Holliday, Professor of Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Education, University of Canterbury, UK This book explores the use of Exploratory Practice (EP) as a tool for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by language teachers, and responds to the increasing demand for teachers to engage in research. It presents the results of a unique two-year longitudinal study that critically examines the implementation of EP by teachers of English and modern foreign languages. Through these case studies, the authors provide a critical account of EP as a form of practitioner research that bridges the divide between theory and practice. It emphasizes the centrality of teacher and learner learning in language education curriculum improvement, and gives a voice to teachers’ perspectives on using EP in the classroom. This book will be of interest to language education professionals and scholars working in Applied Linguistics and Language Education. Abstract: At a time of societal urgency surrounding ecological crises from depleted fisheries to mineral extraction and potential pathways towards environmental and ecological justice, this book re-examines ecologically unequal exchange (EUE) from a historical and comparative perspective. The theory of ecologically unequal exchange posits that core or northern consumption and capital accumulation is based on peripheral or southern environmental degradation and extraction. In other words, structures of social and environmental inequality between the Global North and Global South are founded in the extraction of materials from, as well as displacement of waste to, the South. This volume represents a set of tightly interlinked papers attempting to assess ecologically unequal exchange and to move it forward. Chapters are organised into three main sections: theoretical foundations and critical reflections on ecologically unequal exchange; empirical research on mining, deforestation, fisheries, and the like; and strategies for responding to the adverse consequences associated with unequal ecological exchange. Scholars as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students will benefit from the spirited re-evaluation and extension of ecologically unequal exchange theory, research, and praxis

Abstract: This book draws on original research and a language based pedagogy approach to examine how secondary schools in the UK can devise and implement coherent language and literacy across curriculum policies and strategies, so that grammar and associated metalanguage becomes an integral part of their day to day curriculum practices. The research was undertaken in three 11 to 18 secondary schools in England, where the majority of students are categorised as having English as a second language (EAL), and where a significant minority are also socially disadvantaged in two of the three. The author argues that paying explicit attention to the linguistic structures through which subject knowledge is realised can be of benefit to all pupils in ways that are also socially just and democratic. This book provides an important bridge between academic theory and educational practice that will appeal to applied linguists and sociolinguists, as well as to teachers, teacher trainers and practitioners

Abstract: This new collection of essays follows in the footsteps of the successful volume Thinking Ahead - Essays on Big Data, Digital Revolution, and Participatory Market Society, published at a time when our societies were on a path to technological totalitarianism, as exemplified by mass surveillance reported by Edward Snowden and others. Meanwhile the threats have diversified and tech companies have gathered enough data to create detailed profiles about almost everyone living in the modern world - profiles that can predict our behavior better than our friends, families, or even partners. This is not only used to manipulate peoples’ opinions and voting behaviors, but more generally to influence consumer behavior at all levels. It is becoming increasingly clear that we are rapidly heading towards a cybernetic society, in which algorithms and social bots aim to control both the societal dynamics and individual behaviors. 〈span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: However there are also silver linings: most of the threats that have accumulated over the past years have been identified and regulations are on the way to being introduced. Furthermore, entirely novel approaches based on blockchain technology and other developments derived from complexity science offer the possibility of entirely redefining collective trust and building platforms to support our core societal values. 〈span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: This book conveys an encouraging vision of the future and provides a sketch of how it may look: The road to digital enlightenment is still open, but it needs to be taken now

Abstract: This book analyzes the history and development of settlements-from the earliest periods in human history to the present day-from a Darwinian evolutionary perspective. At the foundation of the evolutionary model is the argument that the human capacity for complex communication and unique problem-solving ability have led to the formation and reality of the modern city and its scaled-up megacity status. While evolutionary theory forms the platform for the book’s argument, general systems theory provides the operational framework for the organization and interpretations of each chapter. Throughout the book, the authors tackle various issues, questions, and possibilities regarding the future development and evolution of human settlements

Abstract: ‘The challenge of coping with uncertain climate risks and potential disruption across a range of sectors is a topic that is increasingly coming to the fore… Dr. Howarth and colleagues skilfully set out the nature of the problem, the barriers to responding effectively, and some innovative thinking about the importance of collaboration and communication to improve resilience.’ -Kristen Guida, London Climate Change Partnership, UK ‘Anyone concerned with communication of environmental risks, public understanding of science and risk, and planning for resilient responses to environmental shocks to our systems, will benefit from reading this book and applying its lessons.’ -Dr Ian Christie, University of Surrey, UK The frequency and intensity of climate shocks such as heatwaves and flooding, are expected to increase under a changing climate with severe implications across the food, energy, water, environment nexus. This book critically explores how to improve resilience to climate shocks by examining the range of challenges and opportunities that exist in the aftermath of shocks and discusses factors that exacerbate and mitigate these. It innovatively discusses the importance of embedding communication, collaboration and co-production within resilience-building across sectors and stakeholders. Doing so with policy, practitioner and scientific communities, Candice Howarth argues, can pave the way to overcome challenges that emerge from climate shocks and facilitate the co-design of sustainable, robust and resilient responses

Abstract: 'A highly original contribution to the field of discourse analysis and an important milestone for the presentation and systematization of the Essex School with contributions from an outstanding range of scholars from different countries and disciplines.' -Daniel Wrana, The Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany This edited volume brings together leading international researchers from across the social sciences to examine the theoretical premises, methodological options and critical potentials of the Essex School of discourse analysis, founded on the work of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. In doing so, it presents a clear picture of a poststructuralist and post-foundational research program to postdisciplinary discourse research. Divided into three parts, it begins by elaborating the ontological, theoretical and methodological foundations of the Essex School’s approach to discourse analysis. The second part provides empirical case studies showing how the Essex School research program informs and instructs empirical discourse research. In the concluding third part authors explain how and with what possible consequences this strand of discourse research contributes to social practices of critique. It offers a crucial contribution to the further methodologization and operationalization of the Essex School’s approach so as to make it a viable alternative to discourse-analytical approaches that take dominant positions in today’s ‘field of discourse studies’. The book's transdisciplinary focus will attract readers who use discourse analysis in all areas of the social sciences and humanities, particularly applied linguistics, cultural anthropology, sociology, philosophy and history. Abstract: Understanding and managing risk and uncertainty is a central task in contemporary societies characterised by rapid social, technological and environmental change. This book presents research approaches used by scholars who all share a passion to gain new insights in how individuals, organisations and societies approach uncertain futures and their potential dangers. The contributions illustrate the usefulness of particular methods and methodologies for researching risk in order to advance the understanding and management of social, technological and environmental challenges. Abstract: This volume introduces Asian indigenous psychologies with an emphasis on major theoretical and practical issues. The contributions demonstrate the potential for the indigenous psychologies of Asia to offer an alternative model of the internationalization of psychology-an internationalization not dominated by Western psychology. As a whole, this volume explores knowledge production outside of Western psychology; asks important questions about the discipline, profession, and practice of Asian indigenous psychology; makes critical appraises of cultural and psychological assumptions; sheds light on the dialectics of the universal and the particular in indigenous psychology; and explores the possibilities for a more equitable global psychology

Abstract: This book challenges prevailing linguistic presumptions concerning contextual lexical meaning by determining whether pedagogic intervention targeted at raising Chinese EFL learners’ awareness of the pragmatic nature of contextual lexical meaning can enhance the learners’ contextual lexical inferencing competence (CLIC). CLIC is crucial to the development of their vocabulary, reading ability and autonomy in reading. Through an empirical study conducted among a group of adult Chinese students of English, the author shows that the power of CLIC instruction lies mainly in its effectiveness in enhancing learners’ self-confidence in making lexical inferences. This book will be of interest to researchers and students of applied linguistics, TESOL and language education more generally, and for language professionals keen to extend their research experience. Wang Gaiyan is a professor at Xi’an International Studies University, China. She obtained her Ph.D. in applied linguistics from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangzhou, China. Her research interests lie mainly in second language acquisition and pedagogy, including second language vocabulary acquisition in reading process, the nature of lexical meaning, and second language vocabulary pedagogy. The focus of her research is on incidental vocabulary acquisition in reading contexts

Abstract: This edited collection brings together the latest research on discourse and society in Latin America and Caribbean in one volume. Employing cross-cutting approaches to current political, institutional and media discourses, it bridges existing theoretical and analytical gaps between the socio-political macro issues and the micro aspects of linguistic analysis to provide fresh insights that deconstruct the complex socio-political power dynamics in Latin America and the Caribbean. Across eight chapters this volume explores the regions’ thorny relationship with their complex histories of colonialism and slavery as well as the ongoing, multifaceted constructions of hegemonic and counter-hegemonic identities at the individual, regional and national levels. In doing so, it demonstrates the unique and rich particularities of these regions and why it is that they challenge many conventional dogmas and methods across the Social Sciences. This book will be of particular interest to scholars working in Discourse Studies, Sociology, Politics, Anthropology and Latin American and Caribbean Studies

Abstract: ‘Transformative and Accountable Climate Governance describes the paradigmatic influences and frameworks within which transformations and transitions in light of a warming earth will occur. The book thereby pursues a multi-disciplinary angle and offers an impressive interdisciplinary approach with truly international outlook. In its entirety, the book is therefore of direct relevance for academia, practitioners and public policy specialists around the globe.’ - Julia M. Puaschunder, Prize Fellow at the Inter-University Consortium of New York, USA This book explores the real-world consequences changing ideas and strategies have on effective climate governance. Its main focus is on why accountability matters - both for transformations and transitions in international climate change governance and how international support for environmentally responsible actions, and extending shared accountabilities, might strengthen climate governance globally. A main point of discussion is if and how better understanding of accountabilities and transformations in ecosystems dynamics, the capacities of organisms to adapt, migrate or otherwise respond to environmental or climatic changes, can improve climate governance mechanisms. Bringing together a diverse set of considerations from various fields of study, chapters examine responses to environmental transformations that occur during periods of climatic crisis, such as species depletion, industrialisation, de-industrialisation or urbanisation. Throughout, this book aims to further readers understanding of if or how accountable climate governance can reduce the risks of global political disorder and widespread conflict in the 21st century, arising from environmental transformations of depleted forests, re-routed waterways, coastlines impacted by sea level rises, changed rainfall patterns and industrial practices. Beth Edmondson is a senior lecturer in the School of Arts at Federation University Australia. Her research focuses on international responses to global climate change, the possibilities for order in the international political system, the nature of sovereignty and the scope of international law in constructing governmental capacities. Stuart Levy is a senior lecturer in the School of Education at Federation University Australia. His interests in international relations include the nature and evolution of state sovereignty and the politics of global climate change

Abstract: Archaeological heritage legislation aims to ensure the best possible protection for the archaeological heritage, yet it remains the case that legislation can remain ineffective through other practical considerations. Some consideration may be legal or procedural, such as difficulties in enforcing legislation or in preventing crimes or damage or archaeological monuments. However other problems may be less obvious and harder to address, and require solutions which go much further than the simple application of the law. The aim of this volume is to address several issues surrounding the management of archaeological heritage comparing and contrasting which laws 'work' and which ones do not, and ignoring other issues which might effectively present the transplantation of an 'ideal system' to another country or political climate. Or the cultural attitudes which might prevent a law working in the legal system for which it was designed. The contributions are from various international jurisdictions and address a variety of subjects - from the protection of archaeological monuments to dealing with and controlling chance finds made by members of the public

Abstract: ‘This book provides a fresh and insightful exploration into how call centre agents develop and use language at work. The researcher was able to do this because of her unique position within this workplace: she being one of the agents herself. This allowed her to provide a deep ethnographic account of how agents are recruited, trained and managed in this call centre, where many previous studies have relied on less knowledge and understanding of the actual and nuanced work situation.’ -Jane Lockwood, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University This book presents an innovative institutional transpositional ethnography that examines the textual trajectory of “the life of a calling script” from production by corporate management and clients to recontextualization by middle management and finally to application by agents in phone interactions. Drawing on an extensive original research it provides a behind-the-scenes view of a multilingual call center in London and critiques the archetypal modern workplace practices including extensive use of monitoring and standardization and use of low-skilled precariat labor. In doing so, it offers fresh perspectives on contemporary debates about resistance, agency, and compliance in globalized workplaces. This study will provide a valuable resource to students and scholars of management studies, communication, sociolinguistics, and linguistic anthropology. Johanna Woydack is Assistant Professor at Vienna University of Business and Economics, Austria
