Abstract: The SIGI is built on 27 innovative variables measuring discriminatory social institutions, which are grouped into four dimensions: discrimination in the family, restricted physical integrity, restricted access to productive and financial resources, and restricted civil liberties. The Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) is a composite index measuring discriminatory social institutions. The SIGI 2023 builds on 26 variables measuring discrimination in social institutions from the Gender, Institutions and Development Database 2023 (GID-DB 2023), and which are grouped into four dimensions: discrimination in the family, restricted physical integrity, restricted access to productive and financial resources, and restricted civil liberties. The SIGI and its dimensions range from 0 to 100, with 0 indicating no discrimination and 100 indicating absolute discrimination against women. Covering 181 countries and territories, the SIGI 2023 seeks to provide an in-depth and global look at how laws, attitudes and practices create gaps between women and men in terms of opportunities and outcomes.

Abstract: This book is an innovative exercise to unravel recent advances in development fundamentals in emerging economies through Indian lens that include various aspects of macroeconomics, international trade, finance, and issues connected to social sector that have become more important in post-pandemic world. The book throws light on efficacy of existing policies and need of reform in policy framework to enhance growth and development and reduce gender disparities in the context of India and other emerging economies. The papers included in different chapters use frontline techniques to discuss various issues that in turn will be of great help for graduate and postgraduate teaching as well as for research. The book substantially contributes to the growing literature on issues relating trade, development, finance, and social sector in light of threat posed by COVID-19 pandemic in emerging market economies and extends the frontiers of knowledge.

Abstract: This comparative table is a subset of the geographical distribution of financial flow dataset which pertains to the sectoral distribution of bilateral ODA commitments. The distribution refers to the economic sector of destination (i.e. the specific area of the recipient’s economic or social structure whose development is intended to be fostered by the aid), rather than the type of goods or services provided. These are aggregates of individual projects notified under the Creditor Reporting System, supplemented by reporting on the sectoral distribution of technical co-operation, and on actual disbursement of food and emergency aid.

Abstract: This comparative table includes statistics on other official flows which are official sector transactions which do not meet the ODA criteria, e.g.: i.) Grants to developing countries for representational or essentially commercial purposes; ii.) Official bilateral transactions intended to promote development but having a grant element of less than 25 per cent; iii.) Official bilateral transactions, whatever their grant element, that are primarily export-facilitating in purpose. This category category includes by definition export credits. This category includes by definition export credits extended directly to an aid recipient by an official agency or institution ("official direct export credits"); iv.) The net acquisition by governments and central monetary institutions of securities issued by multilateral development banks at market terms; v.) Subsidies (grants) to the private sector to soften its credits to developing countries [see Annex 3, paragraph A3.5.iv)b)]; vi.) Funds in support of private investment. Data coverage starts in 1960

Abstract: This dataset contains bilateral commitment data on aid in support of environment sustainability and aid to biodiversity, climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation and desertification from the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) Creditor Reporting System (CRS) database. In addition to bilateral flows, since 2013 the DAC also collects data on climate components from the main Multilateral Development Banks and Rio-marked data for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Adaptation Fund. Bilateral flows In their reporting to the DAC CRS, donors are requested to indicate for each activity whether or not it targets environment and the Rio Conventions (biodiversity, climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation and desertification). A scoring system of three values is used, in which aid activities are "marked" as targeting environment as the "principal objective" or a "significant objective", or as not targeting the objective. The environment marker identifies activities that are "intended to produce an improvement in the physical and/or biological environment of the recipient country, area or target group concerned" or "include specific action to integrate environmental concerns with a range of development objectives through institution building and/or capacity development". A large majority of activities targeting the objectives of the Rio Conventions fall under the DAC definition of "aid to environment". The Rio markers permit their specific identification. Watch out for double-counting! The same activity can be marked for several objectives, e.g. climate change mitigation and biodiversity. These overlaps reflect that the three Rio Conventions are interlinked and mutually reinforcing. However, care needs to be taken not to double-count the amounts when compiling the total for aid in support of more than one Convention: biodiversity-, climate change- and desertification-related aid should not be added up as this can result in double or triple-counting.

Abstract: This is the first book that analyzes public–private partnership (PPP) infrastructure development in developing countries by focusing on recent developments in the Philippines. Infrastructure is extremely important for economic development and poverty reduction. However, given the infrastructure gap and pressures on public expenditure, there is a growing expectation that PPP will fill this gap globally. Over the years, PPP as a mechanism for financing and procuring infrastructure has been the basis of an active and provocative debate in the Philippines, which is known to have inadequate infrastructure—twice in the 2010s, when a significant policy shift on the financing source of public infrastructure was announced by the Philippine government. Drastic policy changes concerning the roles of public finance and PPP in infrastructure development within this decade are not seen in other developing countries. There is no precedent for substantial study on the changes of infrastructure governance in the Philippines, but this book assesses policy changes in infrastructure development in the country and, as academic contributions, identifies several factors behind the changes related to infrastructure governance there, especially the drastic shifts during the Aquino III and Duterte administrations. Furthermore, the findings presented in the book, including the desirable role of public finance and PPP in developing infrastructure in developing countries, could improve infrastructure governance, such as choice of the financing mode, design, and implementation of the PPP project, in other developing countries as an operable contribution to policymakers of government and to industry and management practitioners.

Abstract: This book is about where to go and what to do in China’s reform. Its comprehensive overview and economic analysis of China’s reform offers a coverage not found in other English language text. It provides an overview of China’s development and reform practice, an economic analysis of China’s market-oriented reform and a brief introduction to the theoretical origin, practices, and defects of the planned economy. In so doing, this book demonstrates that the key to the success of China’s reform lies in drawing reasonable governance boundaries between government and the market and between government and society. It further discusses the basic elements required for modernizing China’s state governance system and conducts an analysis of China’s reform and development in 13 key fields. The analysis is based on three dimensions—theoretical logic, practical knowledge, and a historical perspective. This book proposes three elements of comprehensive state governance—inclusive economic institutions; the state capacity to plan and implement policies and laws; and an inclusive and transparent civil society with democracy, the rule of law, fairness, and justice. Its analysis also features the novel application of mechanism design theory by employing the two core ideas of information and incentives and a new research methodology consisting of “three dimensions and six natures”. This book reviews and grasps China’s reform through a qualitative analysis of economic theories and an empirical analysis of statistics from a historical perspective spanning over 180 years. It is proposed to be an important reference for understanding the past, present, and future of China’s reform and teaching about the potential economic superpower. It can also serve as an essential resource for those who are interested in China's economic reform and development.

Abstract: This dataset comprises statistics on ODA commitments which are firms written obligation by government or official agency, backed by the appropriation or availability of the necessary funds, to provide resources of a specified amount under specified financial terms and conditions and for specified purposes for the benefit of a recipient country or a multilateral agency.Commitments are considered to be made at the date a loan or grant agreement is signed or the obligation is otherwise made known to the recipient (e.g. in the case of budgetary allocations to overseas territories, the final vote of the budget should be taken as the date of commitment). This comparative table is broken down by recipients, aid type (grants, capital subscriptions, total commitments, associated financing, technical cooperation), amount type and donor country.

Abstract: The OECD-DAC Survey on forward spending plans is the only regular process that brings together most bilateral and multilateral aid spending plans up to 3 years ahead at the global level. The Survey traces country programmable aid (CPA), a core subset of gross bilateral overseas development aid (ODA) and multilateral outflows essential for the support of development goals. Only the donors that have agreed to make their forward spending plans publicly available are included in the dataset. These figures represent donors' future plans of CPA as reported to the OECD-DAC Surveys on donors' forward spending plans. They are donors’ current indicative planning figures, and do not represent firm commitments, but rather donors’ best estimates of future aid efforts. The figures can include both future spending of already committed, on-going aid projects and programmes, as well as estimates of future total country budget envelopes over the next three years. The total figures presented for each donor should therefore be taken as indicative and not misconstrued as obligations of any sort.

Data are available starting from 1966 onwards.
