Abstract: This volume presents an interesting case study dealing with the relationship between bilingualism and society in 14th-century Florence. Francesco da Barberino’s Documenta Amoris are a sort of orthodox contrappunto of the Commedia, in which Dante’s linguistic experimentation is substituted by Francesco’s rigid bilingualism. The book provides one of the first interpretations of this fundamental figure of 14th-century Florentine culture

Abstract: This book approaches its topic from three angles: diachronic semantics, a panorama of science and scientific writing in Latin from antiquity up to the present, and linguistic forays that try to demarcate scientific Latin from other registers and to identify groups of different language use among the authors introduced in the panorama. The transition of science from Greek through Latin to the modern vernaculars is especially emphasised

Abstract: The papers collected in this book are devoted to verbal valency, and share a diachronic perspective, by either discussing changes in the behavior of verbs or discussing verbal valency at different historical stages of specific languages. They provide new data for research on valency patterns and on changes in valency orientation, verbal voice, and related constructions

Abstract: The volume provides the first systematic comparative approach to the history of forms of address in Portuguese and Spanish—two intimately related languages sharing historical, political and geographic contexts. Including theoretical reflections as well as fine-grained empirical studies, the volume relies on an innovative methodology, as it links traditional downstream diachrony with upstream diachronic reconstruction based on synchronic variation

Abstract: Notwithstanding an impressive amount of secondary literature, an exhaustive study has been never devoted to the twelve letters written by Dante Alighieri after his banishment from Florence (1302–1315). This book answers to this important need of Dante Studies, offering an important tool for the increasing community of specialists interested in Dante’s works and posterity linked to the seventh centenary of his death (2021). A section is devoted to study in depth the theory and practice of the dictamen of the age in relationship with the concrete style of Dante’s texts. A preliminary overview is provided by Latin Philologists and Paleographers on the subject of the manuscript trasmission envisaging the problems dealing with the critical editions of the texts. Example of political communication realized by a layman, the papers gathered in this volume intend to offer a new reading and interpretation of these important letters, studying them in their socio-cultural context

Abstract: Designed as a contribution to contrastive linguistics, the present volume brings up-to-date the comparison of German with its closest neighbour, Dutch, and other Germanic relatives like English, Afrikaans, and the Scandinavian languages. It takes its inspiration from the idea of a Germanic Sandwich, i.e. the hypothesis that sets of genetically related languages diverge in systematic ways in diverse domains of the linguistic system. Its contributions set out to test this approach against new phenomena or data from synchronic, diachronic and, for the first time in a Sandwich-related volume, psycholinguistic perspectives. With topics ranging from nickname formation to the IPP (aka 'Ersatzinfinitiv'), from the grammaticalisation of the definite article to /s/-retraction, and from the role of verb-second order in the acquisition of L2 English to the psycholinguistics of gender, the volume appeals to students and specialists in modern and historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, translation studies, language pedagogy and cognitive science, providing a wealth of fresh insights into the relationships of German with its closest relatives while highlighting the potential inherent in the integration of different methodological traditions

Abstract: This chapter deals with tense, mood, and aspect (TMA) marking in the languages of Suriname, focusing on the stability of forms, meanings, and structural pat-terns. Despite its prominent position in the creolization debate and occasional mentions in the literature on linguistic areas, studies on TMA in (non creoliza-tion) contact settings in Suriname are relatively few. TMA has been studied in detail in the world’s languages, however, in terms of: - typology (Dahl 1985, 2000; Boland 2006; Dahl and Velupillai 2011a, 2011b, 2011c, 2011d; Dryer 2011; Velupillai 2012); - creolization (Singler 1990; Bakker et al. 1994; Winford 2001; Velupillai 2015: 391–403); and - historical development & grammaticalization (Bybee et al. 1994)

Abstract: This study investigates the prosody of different types of sentence-medial parentheticals in Turkish. The results of a production experiment show that clausal parentheticals exhibit cues similar to intonation phrase-level cues such as pre-boundary lengthening of the final syllable, longer pauses, and higher final rise. Phrasal parentheticals, on the other hand, exhibit cues similar to phonological phrase-level cues on both edges. From these results, we conclude that clausal parentheticals are prosodically isolated, supporting the theories of syntax-prosody mapping, while XP parentheticals are prosodically integrated, partially supporting syntax-prosody mapping theories. The latter result supports theories that assume XP-to-phonological phrase matching, but not those that predict the prosodic isolation with all parentheticals. In this respect, Turkish marks constituent-to-constituent matching of syntax and prosody more faithfully than the mapping of syntactic isolation. Additionally, mapping of pragmatic information is highly favoured in Turkish. Specifically, pragmatically isolated parentheticals such as vocatives or interjections are prosodically isolated, regardless of their syntactic make-up. We discuss the prosodic structure of Turkish parentheticals and propose a representation that favours the recursion of certain prosodic category types

Abstract: In this paper, I present a syntactico-pragmatic delimitation and subsequent analysis of reduced parenthetical clause constructions that is based upon Schneider’s (2007a) superordinate and binary division between reduced parenthetical clauses that modify quotes, and those that modify utterances of any other illocutionary type. I argue that the parentheticals in question can receive a unified analysis, and that, by splitting them asunder according to the type of host they modify, the vast majority of the seemingly disparate properties they display can be readily accounted for

Abstract: Parenthetical comment and reporting clauses exhibit various interesting properties, which are shown to be related. Three different word order pat-terns are attested in Dutch and German: apparent V1, V2 and V-final; the internal argument of the parenthetical verb is usually missing; there is an optional so/zo element; the construction is island-sensitive. These patterns are explained by means of an operator that is A ́-moved inside the parenthetical, and which can optionally be lexicalized in the first position. The V-final pattern arises when a complementizer is present, which is the case in propositional as-parentheticals

Abstract: In many respects the agreement systems of Slavonic languages are close to canonical. Controllers of agreement are often present, they have overt expression of features, and they take consistent agreements. The target has obligatory bound expression of agreement, and there is matching of features values (for person, number and gender). How-ever, Slavonic also shows several very interesting instances of agreement choices, induced by a range of different controller types. These agreement choices provide good evidence for the constraints of the Agreement Hierarchy and the Predicate Hierarchy, as well as for various types of condition on agreement, notably animacy and precedence
