    Abstract: It is hardly known that the brothers Jacob Grimm (1785–1883) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859) drew intensively from their earliest childhood. This publication is devoted to their hitherto unexplored childhood and youth drawings as well as those of their siblings Carl, Charlotte, Ludwig Emil Grimm and their descendants. These are sketchbooks, drawing sheets and small watercolours, among which are also extraordinary studies of nature. Individual studies make these hitherto scarcely accessible documents of bourgeois children's and youth culture from the first half of the 19th century accessible in their contexts and at the same time open up the archival holdings of the Grimm Collection of the City of Kassel. With contributions by Kunibert Berin
    Abstract: Kaum bekannt ist, dass die Brüder Jacob Grimm (1785–1883) und Wilhelm Grimm 1786–1859) schon seit frühester Kindheit intensiv gezeichnet haben. Der Band widmet sich ihren bisher unerforschten Kinder- und Jugendzeichnungen sowie denen ihrer Geschwister Carl, Charlotte, Ludwig Emil Grimm und deren Nachkommen. Es handelt sich um Skizzenbücher, Zeichenblätter und kleine Aquarelle, unter denen sich auch außergewöhnliche Naturstudien befinden.     Abstract: This volume contributes to the vibrant, ongoing recuperative work on women’s writing by shedding new light on a group of authors commonly dismissed as middlebrow in their concerns and conservative in their styles and politics. The neologism ‘interfeminism’ – coined to partner Kristin Bluemel’s ‘intermodernism’ – locates this group chronologically and ideologically between two ‘waves’ of feminism, whilst also forging connections between the political and cultural monoliths that have traditionally overshadowed them. Drawing attention to the strengths of this ‘out-of-category’ writing in its own right, this volume also highlights how intersecting discourses of gender, class and society in the interwar and postwar periods pave the way for the bold reassessments of female subjectivity that characterise second and third wave feminism.     Abstract: From 1998 till 2013, a former railwaycanteen on d'Herbouvillekaai in Antwerp that was transformed into a cultural hub by youthful idealists, hoodlums and enthousiasts who called themselves Scheld'apen, was home to an eclectic stream of artists, with over 1300 events occurring in those 15 years, before inevitably being demolished by city expansion plans. All those events produced a flux of visual communication, an enormous flow of printed media that fascinated artists and Scheld?apen aficionados Benny Van den Meulengracht-Vrancx and Bent Vande Sompele. To date, no single human rights standard exists across all social media platforms, allowing private companies to set their own rules, values and parameters. On the one hand, this normative autonomy raises serious concerns, primarily around whether companies should be permitted to establish the rules governing free speech online. On the other hand, if social media platforms simply adopted international law standards, they would be compelled to operate a choice on which model to follow, and put in place mechanisms to uphold these general standards. Die Bürger:innen werden erstmals repräsentativ zu ihrer (In-)Akzeptanz gegenüber Anlagearten befragt. Dabei wird nachgewiesen, dass die Akzeptanz bei lokalen Projekten immer geringer ist als soziopolitisch. Bei den erneuerbaren Energieumwandlungsanlagen ist die Akzeptanz gegenüber Wasserkraft- und Solaranlagen am höchsten, gegenüber Biomasseanlagen am geringsten. Fossile Energieumwandlungsanlagen sind weniger akzeptiert und Tage- und Untertagebaue werden am schlechtesten bewertet. Eine vergleichende Befragung der Unternehmensvertreter:innen des Energie- und Rohstoffsektors ergibt eine Dissonanz der von ihnen angenommenen zur erfassten (In-)Akzeptanz der Bevölkerung: Das Akzeptanzniveau ist unabhängig von der Art des Vorhabens geringer, als es die Unternehmensvertreter:innen annehmen.     Abstract: Seit dem Mord an George Floyd durch den Polizeieingriff in den Vereinigten Staaten im Mai 2020 und der daraus erwachsenen (Social Media-)Bewegung #blacklivesmatter hat auch die Beschäftigung mit den verschiedenen Formen von Rassismus in Deutschland zugenommen. Konnte der Begriff vor wenigen Jahren in wissenschaftlichen wie öffentlichen Diskursen weitgehend nur schwierig oder selten genutzt werden, hat er sich inzwischen hierzulande auch als Gegenbegriff zur globalen Wirkmächtigkeit rechter Ideologien, die besonders Identitätskategorien zur Legitimation mörderischer Gewalt heranziehen, sowie im Kontext globaler Diversifizierungsmaßnahmen im Diskursmainstream durchgesetzt. Dieser Erfolg des Begriffs lässt auch die filmischen Produktionen zu Themen von Menschenfeindlichkeit, die auf Repräsentationskategorien basieren, in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Filme zu Themen des Rassismus versuchen, Aufklärungsarbeit im Sinne anti-rassistischer Praxis zu leisten, während beispielsweise propagandistische Videos rechter und dschihadistischer Kreise zur (re-)produktiven Verhandlung von Rassismus beitragen. Andererseits lassen sich Filme, die scheinbar nichts mit Rassismus zu tun haben, bei einem genaueren analytischen Blick sehr wohl als Verstärkungs-, Reproduktions- oder Verschleierungsakteure von Rassismen verstehen. So sind Filme immer schon im Sinne von (Un-)Sichtbarkeitsmaschinen dazu geeignet, soziale Verhältnisse zu veräußerlichen und so ungedachte Zusammenhänge zu denken. In dieser argumentativen Bi-Perspektivität – Sichtbarwerden der Rassismusdiskurse und Filme als Sichtbarkeitsmedien sozialer Verhältnisse – geht der vorliegende Sammelband Diskursformen des Rassismus, seiner Filmkulturen und Möglichkeiten des (anti-rassistischen) Widerstands besonders/aber nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Kontext nach. Daran schließen sich folgende Fragen an: Wie sieht der Zusammenhang von (fiktionalen) Filmen und Formen des Rassismus in Film-kulturen aus? Wie gehen fiktionale Formate mit Antisemitismus, Rechtsradikalismus, antimuslimischem Rassismus, Antiziganismus und whiteness um? Und wie versuchen aktuelle (auch experimentelle) filmische Formate, Rassismus entgegenzutreten? Im Zentrum des Sammelbandes stehen die Filme und ihre Geschichten selbst. Ziel ist es, das Erkenntnispotential von Filmen in der Auseinandersetzung mit Rassismus zu befragen: Was genau am Rassismus machen die Filme sichtbar? Wie lassen sich mögliche historische Entwicklungen narrativer audiovisueller Diskursformen (für den deutschsprachigen Kontext) darstellen? Wie verändern sich in diesen Entwicklungen die Auseinandersetzungen mit jenen rassistischen Formen? Und grundsätzlich: Wie stehen Film und Rassismus zueinander? Die Beiträge des Sammelbands explorieren so diverse Erscheinungsformen des Rassistischen: Umweltrassismus, Antisemitismus, Rassismus gegen Schwarze Menschen, Anti-Zig*anismus, anti-muslimischer Rassismus, Rassismus und Gender, rechtsextremer Rassismus in Deutschland und filmische Erinnerungskultur, Afropolitanismus und Rassismus, Rassismus ohne Rassen*/Rassismus gegen Migrant:innen.     Abstract: Inwieweit das Programmangebot der Volkshochschulen die Medienkompetenz und digitale Teilhabe der Teilnehmenden fördert, untersucht Jan Hellriegel in seiner Dissertation. Die Arbeit basiert auf einer Fallstudie mit vier Volkshochschulen in Rheinland-Pfalz. Kernstück ist eine Programmanalyse unter dem Aspekt der Medienkompetenzförderung. Zudem wurden anhand von Interviews mit VHS-Leitungen und hauptamtlich pädagogischen Mitarbeitenden Faktoren ermittelt, die die Programmplanung beeinflussen. In den Ergebnissen wird deutlich, dass dem Auftrag, die Medienkompetenz der Teilnehmenden zu fördern in den VHS-Programmen nicht angemessen Rechnung getragen werden kann. Bezüge finden sich vorrangig im Kontext beruflicher Mediennutzung, während eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit Medien und digitaler Transformation nur selten Platz im Programm findet. Hier Schwerpunkte zu setzen, ist ein bislang nicht erfüllter, aber notwendiger Bildungsauftrag der VHS zur digitalen Teilhabe für alle in einer demokratisch verfassten Gesellschaft. Gründe für diese Defizite sieht Hellriegel unter anderem in der Abhängigkeit der Volkshochschulen von Teilnahmegebühren.     Abstract: Velar Fronting (VF) is the name for any synchronic or diachronic phonological process shifting the velar place of articulation to the palatal region of the vocal tract. A well-known case of VF in Standard German is the rule specifying that the fricative [x] assimilates to [ç] after front segments. VF also refers to the change from velar sounds like [ɣ k g ŋ] to palatals ([ʝ c ɟ ɲ]). The book provides a thorough investigation of VF in German dialects: Data are drawn from over 300 original sources for varieties that are (or were) spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and other countries. VF differs geographically along three parameters: (A) triggers, (B) targets, and (C) outputs. VF triggers (=A) are typically defined according to vowel height: In some systems VF is induced only by high front vowels, in others by high and mid front vowels, and in yet others by high, mid, and low front vowels. Some varieties treat consonants ([r l n]) as triggers, while others do not. VF can be nonassimilatory, in which case the rule applies even in the context of back segments. In many varieties of German, VF targets (=B) consist of the two fricatives [x ɣ], but in other dialects the targets comprise [x] but not [ɣ]. In some places, VF affects not only [x ɣ], but also velar stops and the velar nasal. The output of VF (=C) is typically palatal [ç] (given the input [x]), but in many other places it is the alveolopalatal [ɕ]. A major theme is the way in which VF interacts with synchronic and diachronic changes creating or eliminating structures which can potentially undergo it or trigger it. In many dialects the relationship between velars ([x]) and palatals ([ҫ]) is transparent because velars only occur in the back vowel context and palatals only when adjacent to front sounds. In that type of system, independent processes can either feed VF (by creating additional structures which the latter can undergo), or they can bleed it (by eliminating potential structures to which VF could apply). In other dialects, VF is opaque. In one opaque system, both velars ([x]) and palatals ([ҫ]) surface in the context of front segments. Thus, in addition to expected front vowel plus palatal sequences ([…iç…]), there are also unexpected ones consisting of front vowel plus velar ([…ix…]). In a second type of opaque system, velars and palatals are found in the context of back segments; hence, expected sequences such as […iç…] occur in addition to unexpected ones like […ɑç…]

    Abstract: This volume contains the previously unpublished correspondence of the philosopher and writer Günther Anders (1902-1992) with philosophers of a related philosophical tradition. Some of the letters date from the pre-war period of the 1920s and 1930s, the majority dates from the post-war period up to the 1970s. Based on the correspondence of this volume, Anders' intellectual and biographical development from an academic philosopher to a politically engaged thinker and activist can be traced.     Abstract: Onder de naam Cubic 3 Design ontwierpen Ton Hoogerwerf (1956) en Gerwin van Vulpen (1958) tussen 1981 en 1995 humorvolle objecten die zich verzetten tegen de gedachte dat een voorwerp functioneel moet zijn. Het leidde tot ?camp? vazen van purschuim, trol-lampen die eenzaamheid oplosten, Rock Hudson-servethouders die aids bespreekbaar maakten en een ?trash? interieur voor de Rijksdienst Beeldende Kunst in Den Haag.00Cubic?s ?goede smaak van de slechte smaak? wordt door Yvonne Brentjens nader onder de loep genomen. Het boek schetst tegelijkertijd een krachtig tijdsbeeld van de jaren 80 en eerste helft van de jaren 90.     Abstract: Paradoxes of Media and Information Literacy contributes to ongoing conversations about control of knowledge and different ways of knowing. It does so by analysing why media and information literacy (MIL) is proposed as a solution for addressing the current information crisis. Questioning why MIL is commonly believed to wield such power, the book throws into sharp relief several paradoxes that are built into common understandings of such literacies. Haider and Sundin take the reader on a journey across different fields of practice, research and policymaking, including librarianship, information studies, teaching and journalism, media and communication and the educational sciences. The authors also consider national information policy proposals and the recommendations of NGOs or international bodies, such as UNESCO and the OECD.     Abstract: One hundred years after the founding of the École Coloniale Supérieure in Antwerp, the adjacent Middelheim Museum invites Sandrine Colard, researcher and curator, to conceive an exhibition that probes silenced histories of colonialism in a site-specific way. For Colard, the term Congoville encompasses the tangible and intangible urban traces of the colony, not on the African continent but in 21st-century Belgium: a school building, a park, imperial myths, and citizens of African descent. In the exhibition and this adjoining publication, the concept Congoville is the starting point for 15 contemporary artists to address colonial history and ponder its aftereffects as black flâneurs walking through a postcolonial city.00Due to the multitude of perspectives and voices, this book is both a catalogue and a reference work comprised of artistic and academic contributions.     Abstract: Both Narratology and Digital Humanities look back on a remarkable history of research and progress. One after the other, the narratological and the digital research communities evolved into large international and interdisciplinary networks. While cooperation between the two disciplines would be possible and beneficial in many areas, they often still work in parallel rather than together. A workshop at Hamburg University brought together Literary Studies researchers from Narratology and from Digital Humanities to (a) discuss requirements for and possibilities of a digital operationalisation of analytical categories from Narratology and Literary Studies and (b) theoretically reflect upon possible connections between more traditional and digital approaches.
