Abstract: During the celebrations for Leonardo’s fifth centenary, and under the patronage of their Italian Committee, a “21st century workshop of knowledge” worked eagerly in an interdisciplinary key, ranging on many aspects (from engineering to philosophy of nature, to history of architecture, reading of sources, technical knowledge, project analysis, cartographic interpretation), with the aim of contributing to the advancement of studies on an artist-researcher who synthesized the knowledge of his time in an extraordinary verbal-visual language, pushing them forward with anticipations and intuitions which are still relevant for the contemporary project, interpreting the territory as a common good and a living being. The volume presents the outcomes of this intense work

Abstract: Today's scenario is characterized by a global connectivity space where uninterrupted streams of information, people, and goods flow, through multi-scale socio-economic processes. All of this requires rethinking well-accepted mental frames as individual capabilities, businesses actions, social and spatial agglomerations evolve in a new and unceasingly changing landscape. This book contributes to the debate on how cities are redefined in relation to the global connective space and the so-called knowledge-based economy. The authors explore the variable set of functional changes, which are intrinsically linked to the multiplicity of multi-scale processes. The book contains the proceedings of the conference "New sciences and actions for complex cities (Florence, Italy 14-15 December 2017)"

Abstract: This book is conceived with the desire to dialogue with the southern shore of the Mediterranean Sea about some great current challenges in the fields of urban design and territorial planning. In this perspective, the authors identify six themes at the basis of the Italian disciplinary tradition, from which to extract suggestions for future projects. Some specific strategies emerge: the structuring role of the non-artificialized open space; the ordering function of the collective public space; the centrality of public action in the governance of transformations; the importance of multidisciplinary and integrated approach to problems; the heritage intended as a living repository of ideas for the project. Finally, the evocation of a limit between anthropogenic and natural factors that gives measure and dimension to our world

Abstract: The Atlas of Territorial Heritage in the Municipality of East Havana is a useful tool in order to reach a complete knowledge of an extended Cuban municipality belonging to Havana, Cuba. At the same time the atlas is useful to generate analytical bases for future urban planning interventions and transformations, which can be focused on the idea of territorial heritage as an essential resource for a self-sustaining development. The main objective is to explain the tangible and intangible components of the heritage and try to stimulate and strengthen the community's awareness on the richness of territory and its potential. Thus communities can express themselves in the adaptation to environmental, climatic, demographic and economic changes. The Atlas was developed by an Italian/Cuban team of experts in different phases and has been updated recently. It contains the results of a deep and accurate analysis and cataloging, made up of a large number of data concerning the various areas of research. The data were organized in typologies and punctually located in maps. The multifaceted and dense richness of Cuban culture finds in this volume a confirmation, and makes possible to put into practice cognitive tools for safeguarding and valorization, a strong point for new challenges of contemporaneity

Abstract: The purpose of the book is, on one hand, to try to trace a method and some working perspectives for post-growth planning, and on the other hand, to testify, through a concrete experience, the old and new questions and the interpretative and visionary effort that the territory poses to planning today. In a region like Apulia, which has followed an innovative path in the government of the territory and the landscape, the experience of knowledge and project for the city of Ugento is an opportunity to reflect on how today the construction of the plan can accompany the government of the territory in its development, rather than claiming to direct it, penetrate its policies and interact with its various instruments in a dynamic and even experimental way. In this way the construction of the plan can provide for a system of values to refer to in order to navigate the change and the design vision to be placed at the base of urban policies, tactics, individual interventions, thus coming to be a tool at the service of local development

Abstract: The Mediterranean world has been seen for centuries as a 'hyperbaric chamber' in which the production of idyllic images by Grand Tour travellers has led its actual architectural evolution to the abysses, as a result of compromises in space. This has involved the construction of a (counter-)Atlas within which the architectures have acted by transfers, thus redefining the notion of geography according to space. This work investigates this 'encroaching' through the theme of the bourgeois dwelling, seeking a logical principle between the Mediterranean and the architectures by Palladio, Rossi and Märkli, united by a system of invisible distances able to demonstrate the temporariness of the 'maps'. Therefore, if it is true that the construction of space is able to change the geographical maps, it is legitimate to ask in this sense where the Mediterranean ends, a question to which this work tries to find an answer by means of the architectural project and its compositional phenomena

Abstract: This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This research was based on the transfer of knowledge from members of the Albanian Diaspora in Italy (university students, young architects and researchers) to their home country. This unique process blazed a trail in the Albania-related studies by creating a methodology, which could be replicated not only in Albanian rural contexts, but also elsewhere. The book constitutes a structured tool for generating sustainable and socially inclusive territorial development processes in five lesser-known Albanian cultural sites. Their tangible and intangible cultural heritage was seen as a driving factor for triggering development processes aimed at improving the inhabitants' quality of life and strengthening local identity and social networks. Through concrete proposals and strategies, the book offers scenarios and solutions capable of enhancing the potential of each village and, at the same time, counteracting the effects of land abandonment that so often characterise them

Abstract: After years of indiscriminate exploitation, the Anthropocene period is giving us back a nature whose reactions make the Earth less and less habitable: reversing the route has now become a urgent priority. The paradigm of ecosystem services is moving a step in the right direction in considering the multiplicity of benefits offered to mankind by the environment, but lends itself to quantitative drifts that risk extending commodification to the world of nature. This book investigates the consistency and usefulness for the sciences of the territory of the paradigm of ecosystem services from multiple disciplinary horizons, advancing the proposal to bring it back within a bioregional approach, with the introduction of the concept of eco-territorial services

Abstract: Cartography represents places through symbols related to forms, dimensions and signs. By the meticulous decoding of all these signs and their connexions the user is enabled to enter the deep identity of places considered. The book is based on a rational consequential method by which the user can get the necessary information from the map in order to understand and imagine the represented places, so as to use it for personal aims. The book is primarily intended for specialists or students of territory, but also for hikers who use maps on excursions or just for people who are curious and interested in deepening their knowledge of territory

Abstract: This research is part of the debate on sustainable tourism development and, in particular, on the impacts that tourist pressure generates in the cities of art: the analysis is indeed focused on the Historic Centre of Florence, which was admitted onto the World Heritage list in 1982. The site adopted a Management Plan which aims at, among other things, monitoring the five main threats, including tourism and the critical issues generated by its impacts. This study aims at developing a model for the improvement of the decision making process, using maps which represent the indicators developed through the analysis of pressure, status and impact factors as perceived by the local community and by a web mapping platform for integrated and participatory management. The tool is designed to be part of the monitoring envisaged by the Management Plan in order to implement controlled and shared management systems, improve dialogue between the different stakeholders, support the definition of strategies for the decentralization of tourist areas and decrease tourist pressure and the impacts it generates

Abstract: This text collects the revisions of some of the most significant degree theses written from 2011 to 2015 in the bachelor degree in City, territory and landscape planning and in the Master's degree in City and territory planning and design of University of Florence, Empoli campus. The theses cover the current diversified scenery of problems within the urban planning discipline, using very different methodologies, interpretations and perspectives of analysis. The territory emerging as the protagonist of the young authors' narratives is a complex and multi-layered object; it is constituted by things and relationships, set on the long times of history, aimed towards the present and projected into the future, and it continues to raise their questions, doubts, curiosities and also some fruitful answers. In summary, rather than chances for discussion on a disposable form of knowledge, this works offer chances for reflection and experimentation, and opportunities for the incremental construction of creative solutions by its authors

Abstract: The volume is dedicated to the theoretical and constructed work of Sedad Hakki Eldem. As part of a line of research on the Mediterranean and its ability to combine the settlement principles, the book focuses on the ability of the ancient world to work out a project, applied to the story of Sedad Hakki Eldem, a key person of 20th Century Turkish architecture and the one who most of all tried with his work to give Turkish modern architecture a vernacular character. The book studies the work of the Turkish architect through the key themes of the construction of the city, such as the analysis of monuments and houses, and also deals with the theme of travelling, Eldem's legacy to the city of Istanbul and his relationship with the Turkish-Ottoman house read as a primary reference for modern Turkish architecture

Abstract: Can today's landscape become a living construct again, moved and shaped by a plurality of actors working for its maintenance with shared modalities? This text investigates the landscape's role and its structural features in the governance of the territory, starting from Tuscany's experience with landscape planning: this polyphonic, rich and multifaceted reflection is aimed at promoting the birth of communication tools and agreements, which not only strengthen the decision-making system from the bottom (in order to overcome the acknowledged detachment between plans, policies and common sentiment), but also open the way to the renewal of the consolidated structures of representative democracy

Abstract: Architecture has always been suspended in the indefinable (although necessary) tension between a 'truth to be revealed' and a 'truth to be built' and the foundation of the project is to be found, as Kenneth Frampton teaches, in the mutual relationship identified as between the topos, the typos and the 'tectonic', which is thus doubly linked to the specific conditions of a place and to the universal existence of architecture. This volume collects a set of works as found in their relationship with the Earth and that participate in the quest for the double truth mentioned above. From Verona to Fisterra and Cádiz, from Istanbul to Pompeii, the extraordinary nature of the site establishes the settlement principle, but more than that: the project, moving within the precise limits of the discipline, defines for them solid conceptual, as well as physical, bases

Abstract: This book was born as a "work in in progress" and collects many of the public presentations of Giacomo Becattini's book "La cosicenza dei luoghi. Il territorio come soggetto corale" ("The Conscience of Places. The territory as a choral subject"), published by Donzelli in 2015. The presentations inspired great methodological passion, concrete perspectives and also criticism. In fact, the text of Becattini has raised issues of great importance on the perspectives of local development, by projecting them on the very future of human societies in a period of crisis and global uncertainty. The richness, the plurality of accents and the depth of the debate that has developed ensure that the collection lives a "life of its own" even with respect to the book of origin. Becattini's disappearance, which occurred just as the volume was being edited, leaves a huge void but stimulates even more the debate on this fresco, painted by several artists on the trace of his recent work

Abstract: This volume documents Edoardo Detti's photographic activity, perhaps a "side" aspect, yet a fascinating and essential one for understanding his personality and his work. Many things are known about Detti: the several works and projects created individually or during the long collaboration with Carlo Scarpa, the intense preservation of the Tuscan territory, the important political and cultural role as counsellor for urban planning of the Municipality of Florence and as president of the Italian National Urban Planning Institute. His peculiar poetic, which so deeply intertwines architectural sensitivity and intimate adherence to the measure and qualities of the Tuscan landscape, is less known and investigated, and it is an attitude of which this volume offers valuable interpretations. The selected images, all taken between the 1940s and 1950s with the famous 6x6 Rolleiflex, almost make up a parallel essay to his activity as a scholar and an architect, where a profound ability to read the settlements, resulting from a historical, structural and formal interpretation, manifests itself in a vision which is suspended between truthful documentation and poetic abstraction

Abstract: This volume was born from a recognition of the experiences and warnings which were needed for the creation of a landscape observatory in Tuscany, and for the definition of the network and interactive methods which the observatory itself can use while aiming at its own operational effectiveness. The analysis was carried out during the formation stage of the Landscape Plan of Tuscany and during the collaboration which the Regional Authority has promoted with the Inter-University Centre of Territory Sciences. Starting from the examination of the organizational and functional models characterizing the main European and Italian experiences, in the plurality of regulatory contexts, forms of landscape planning and regulation and practices of cultural and association mobilization of the reference populations, some working hypotheses are formulated and calibrated on the Tuscan situation

Abstract: In recent years, the in-depth analysis of landscape issues, the approval of the first regional Landscape Plans, the reflection on the action carried out by the Superintendencies are introducing a change of perspective in the protective action, drawing attention both to the critical aspects connected to it and to the numerous innovations emerged. This book presents the results of a research dedicated to Landscape Planning in Italy, offering a detailed state of the art, as well as some insights on the most significant initiatives. Finally, the volume proposes a methodological approach for an operational model of Landscape Planning based on a patrimonial and structural consideration of the landscape

Abstract: In recent years, numerous reflections have pushed on the importance of using agricultural parks to recreate reciprocal relationships between urban and rural realities, through the enhancement of their proximity. The parks can also be an opportunity to experiment with new forms of planning on a territorial scale, oriented towards the construction of unitary and coherent morphological, functional and environmental scenarios. This volume offers a reflection on these issues by sharing the results of a design experience involving the School of Territory studies of Empoli (Degree in Urban and Territory Planning) and the School of territorial engineering of Clermont Ferrand (AgroParisTech ENGREF). The scenarios arising from the reflection synthesize these two approaches, integrating the interpretation of equities with the processes of diagnostic territorial and with the construction of shared territorialities

Abstract: The volume explores the category of urban spaces that are self-managed by the inhabitants and can be recognized as common goods: urban communities. These are defined as third spaces (neither public nor private) and recognized on the basis of seven characteristics. Furthermore, some proposals are made on how planning can adequately treat these places, through the comparison with some municipal policies and on the basis of the self-determination of experiences in order to build a city really in the hands of its inhabitants. In fact, urban communities can be seen as a strategic place for testing new relationships between citizens and between them and institutions

Abstract: The introduction of the concept of structural invariant in territorial and urban planning has encountered numerous application problems. The purpose of this work is to investigate the reasons and formulate a new definition capable of overcoming them. At the center of the analysis is the relationship between crucial concepts in the interpretation of the territory: development sustainability, resource, space, place, place identity, status, spatio-temporal territorial structures, and structural invariants intended as an instrument to produce and reproduce the social and environmental identity and quality of the territory. The fulcrum is the organization and functioning of the territory, the spatio-temporal processes and the actors who created them. And from intangible, but objective values, it is necessary to take the moves: the real estate values and the values attributed by the different population groups, in terms of memory, attribution of meaning and identity

Abstract: The territory is constantly being torn by thousands of conflicting interests and, as a common good, it is in growing need of a unitary planning, suitable for the people living, working and consuming in it: an amount of suitability including urban places, city networks, rivers, valleys, agricultural areas and coastal hinterlands. Compared to the architectural and urban project, the territorial project has much more episodic and sectoral disciplinary rules. This volume is the Tuscan outcome of a national research on the "territorial project", and provides the concept of urban bioregion as a methodology which can integrate analyses and projects on: the environmental prerequisites of the settlement, the reconfiguration of synergies between city and countryside, the polycentric rebalancing of urban systems, locally-based economic and energy systems, forms of self-government for local and self-sustainable development starting from the rules for the enhancement of the territory's heritage

Abstract: Vernacular architecture represents a great resource that has considerable potential to define principles for sustainable design and contemporary architecture. This publication is the result of an overall aim to produce a valuable tool for analysis regarding vernacular heritage through different assessments, in order to define principles to consider for sustainable development. This was possible through a comprehensive reflection on the principles established and the strategies to recognise in different world contexts. The present publication was the result of an in-depth approach by 46 authors from 12 countries, concerned with the analysis and critical assessment of vernacular heritage and its sustainable perspective. The book presents 8 chapters addressing operational definitions and synopses advances, regarding the main areas of vernacular heritage contribution to sustainable architecture. It also presents 15 chapters and 53 case studies of vernacular and contemporary approaches in all the 5 continents, regarding urban, architectural, technical and constructive strategies and solutions. VERSUS, HERITAGE FOR TOMORROW: Vernacular Knowledge for Sustainable Architecture is the result of a common effort undertaken by the partners ESG | Escola Superior Gallaecia, Portugal, as Project leader; CRAterre | École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Grenoble, France; DIDA | Università degli Studi di Firenze, Italy; DICAAR | Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Italy; and UPV | Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain. Abstract: By summarising some selected bachelor and master's degree theses, the volume offers an overview of the study activities conducted within the Degree courses in Planning of the University of Florence, Empoli Campus. The different sections constituting the work highlight a multi-scale and multidisciplinary work methodology, which feeds on an approach mainly based on the importance given to the value of places and of specific territorial contexts. The result is an original picture of contributions, representing a potentially innovative way for the comparison of territorial and urban studies with the various operational dilemmas which arise at the intersection between the drafting of policies, the construction of long-lasting territorial projects and the local development guidelines

Abstract: The volume collects the contributions of the 'study day' held on June 16, 2010 at the University of Florence on Abbeys and medieval landscapes in Tuscany, that is, on the forms of the territory that have structured the ways of life in the countryside of our region for centuries. Today an infatuation is observed for that kind of landscape, which is confirmed by a lack of interest for its conservation or for transformations respectful of the rules that produced it. It is therefore appropriate to submit to the historic method a synthetic view of the medieval landscape, from the ancient premises to the economic reasons that led to the monastic and feudal forms, up to the appearance of a new structure appreciated for its useful beauty, in a persistent substratum of mysterious storytelling. Tuscany allows multiple evidence of what actually survives of the pervasive order established in the Middle Ages also for its exemplary literary and iconographic representations, both contemporary and of the medieval times

Abstract: During the creative act, the artist and the scientist both proceed through the decoding and recomposition of the realities they observe. Based on this method correspondence, art and science offer tools to study the inner or outer reality, looking at objects and situations and looking for correlations and interpretations, in an ideal relationship between the artist's study and the scientist's laboratory . Starting from this unitary vision of the cognitive processes, the interactions between chemistry and decorative arts, between chemistry and architecture and between chemistry and literature (poetry, theater, narrative) are examined, highlighting sometimes unexpected and surprising analogies and overlappings

Abstract: This work discusses the processes and dynamics of the landscapes of the mining industry, of the degraded areas, and of their possibilities for redevelopment through the creation of "new landscapes". The case of abandoned mining areas is seen in the context of the three phases of landscape transformation (previous, contemporary and subsequent to the mining activity), and in the context of the expanse of the regions affected by the phenomenon. The latter led to the hypothesis that the territory enhancement project should be placed within a complex system, whose main features are widespread interventions involving and intercepting both new and consolidated landscape networks

Abstract: "L'agricoltura è la prima delle arti" was born from a project, from the conscious modification of a context, using knowledge which had been shared and accumulated over time. Contemporary agriculture, the daughter of the 'green revolution', of Fordism and its crisis, turned its back on the knowledge that agriculture was able to produce not only food, but also environmental protection and aesthetic quality. The texts collected in this volume are intended to encourage reflections and practices in the various areas of territory and landscape planning and design - on the university, political, technical, professional and administrative levels - which can lead the world of agriculture to regain a central role in outlining new relationships between inhabitants and territory. In these texts, the agricultural landscape represents an opportunity to produce a context where it is pleasant to live, with an approach far from the aesthetical drift of a 'picturesque' and imaginary misunderstanding; an approach which is however careful towards a contextual aesthetic, arising within and from the rural world

Abstract: Town planning entails the complex task of studying the habitat in its variegated aspects, with the objective of introducing functional transformations in response to the demands of the community. Since it is an experimental discipline, however, methods of approach and elaboration can be very different. This book represents the synthesis of the degree theses produced in the Department of Town and Territorial Planning of the University of Florence between 2000 and 2004, selected with a view to achieving a significant overview of the various issues and disciplinary areas. The volume thus addresses topical questions such as the protection of the historic identity, the rethinking of the modern city, obsolete areas and urban gaps, relational processes and spaces, sustainable development and planning, and the settlements of developing countries
