Abstract: This is a groundbreaking study of the centrality of listening to the experience of modern warfare. Based on years of ethnographic interviews with US military service members and Iraqi civilians, as well as on direct observations of wartime Iraq, the book reveals how these populations learned to extract valuable information from the ambient soundscape while struggling with the deleterious effects that it produced in their ears, throughout their bodies, and in their psyches.

Abstract: Killing civilians is worse than killing soldiers. Few moral principles have been more widely and viscerally affirmed. But in recent years it has faced a rising tide of dissent. Seth Lazar turns this tide and vindicates international law. He develops new insights into the morality of harm, relevant to everyone interested in the debate.

Abstract: This study traces the often uncanny relationships between Irish- and Jewish-Americans, arguing for the centrality of these diasporic groups to the development of American popular music, fiction, and especially drama. The book reads such cultural forms as tenement fiction, Tin Pan Alley music, and melodrama as part of a larger 'circum-North Atlantic' world in which texts and performers from Ireland, Europe, and America were involved in a continuous cultural exchange within which stereotypes and performances of Jewishness and Irishness took centre stage.

Abstract: At the turn of the new millennium, a new phenomenon has emerged: conservatives who just decades before had rejected the expanding human rights culture began to embrace human rights in order to advance their own political goals. In this book Nicola Perugini and Neve Gordon account for how human rights - generally conceived as a counterhegemonic instrument for righting historical injustices - are being deployed to subjugate the weak and legitimise domination.

Abstract: Since the election of the first Latin American pope, the role that the Catholic Church played in Argentina's 'Dirty War' has been revisited. Through a rigorous methodology this book contributes to the understanding of the Argentine context and the role of Catholics under state terror. The study provides a deeper view of the relationship between Catholicism and state terror during the 'Dirty War' by examining the case of the La Salette missionaries, a group of Catholic seminarians who were arrested and tortured by military personnel who also claimed to be Catholics.

Abstract: This volume investigates dynamics in EU border security and migration management and advances a path-breaking framework for thought, judgment, and action in this context. It argues that a crisis point has emerged whereby irregular migrants are treated as both a security threat to the EU and as a life that is threatened and in need of saving.

Abstract: "Rituals combining healing with spirit possession and court-like proceedings are found around the world and throughout history. For example, a person suffers from an illness that cannot be cured, and in order to be healed he performs a ritual involving prosecution and defense, a judge and witnesses. Divine beings give evidence through human oracles, spirits possess their human victims and are exorcized, and local gods intervene to provide healing and justice. Such practices seem to be the very antithesis of modernity and many modern, secular states have systematically attempted to eliminate them. Why are such rituals largely absent from modern societies, and what happens to them when the state attempts to expunge them from their health and justice systems, or even to criminalize them? Despite the prevalence of rituals involving some or all of these elements, The Law of Possession represents the first attempt to compare and analyze them systematically. The volume brings together historical and contemporary case studies from East Asia, South Asia, and Africa, and argues that, despite consistent attempts by states to discourage, eliminate, and criminalize them, such rituals persist and even thrive because they meet widespread human needs"--

Through the use of a diverse mix of historical and contemporary documents, the book explores how the problematisation of intersex infant genitalia in 1950s psychiatry propelled the emergence of the gender apparatus in order to socialise sexed individuals into the ideal productive and reproductive subjects of White, middle-class postwar America

Abstract: This title collects a critical mass of border-crossing scholarship on the intersections of dance and theatre. Taking corporeality as an idea that unites the work and embodiment as a negotiation of power dynamics, it addresses the politics and poetics of the moving body in performance on and off stage. Contemporary stage performances have sparked global interest in new experiments between dance and theatre and this volume situates this interest in its historical context by investigating other such moments from pagan mimes of late antiquity to contemporary flash mobs and television dance contests.

Abstract: John Wilson provides a pragmatic analysis of presidential language. Pragmatics is concerned with linguistic 'meaning in context', or the relationship between 'what we say' and 'what we mean'. Hence, he explores the various ways in which US presidents have used language within specific social contexts to achieve specific objectives. This may include obfuscation, misdirection, the use of metaphor or ambiguity, or in some cases simply lying. He concentrates on six presidents: John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, Ronald W. Reagan, William J. Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack H. Obama.

Abstract: This title identifies a new family model geared for the post-industrial economy. The Blue Family Paradigm emphasises the importance of women's, as well as men's, workforce participation, egalitarian gender roles, and the delay of family formation until both parents are emotionally and financially ready. By contrast, the Red Family Paradigm rejects these new family norms, viewing the change in moral and sexual values as a crisis. The authors show how the Red-Blue divide goes much deeper than this value system conflict.

Abstract: This title examines the ritual murder accusation (or blood libel), one of the most heinous charges against the Jews in the history of medieval antisemitism. It traces the origins to the circumstances surrounding the death of William of Norwich in 1144 and the text of the 'Life and Passion' composed by the monk Thomas of Monmouth in 1150, in the period immediately following the English civil war, the Anarchy under King Stephen, and the Second Crusade. The charge arose as the result of a trial of an indebted knight, Simon de Novers, for killing his Jewish banker Deulesalt.

Abstract: There is a robust body of knowledge suggesting that early language and literacy experiences significantly impact on future academic achievement. However, relatively little has been written with respect to the early literacy development and experiences of deaf children. Connie Mayer and Beverly J. Trezek address this need by providing an in-depth exploration of how young deaf children learn to read and write, identifying the foundational knowledge, abilities, and skills that are fundamental to this process.

Abstract: How is power being mediated in new democracies? Can media function independently in the unstable and polarised political environment experienced after the fall of autocracy? Do major shifts in economic and ownership structures help or hinder the quality of the media? How much can new media laws alter old journalistic habits and political cultures? And how do new technologies impact the media and democracy? This book examines these questions, drawing on a vast set of data assembled by a large international project.

Abstract: This study advances a theoretical synthesis to explaining radicalization. Treating radicalization as a process along which a member organisation of a broad social movement shifts from predominantly nonviolent tactics to predominantly violent tactics, the book moves beyond a focus on dispositions and opportunities for aggression triggered in response to environmental stimuli, or on violence-prone ideologies and cultural templates.

    Keywords: Antisemitismus
Abstract: This is the first book-length study to explore, in the context of the new anti-Semitism, the question that has become central to its field of scholarship: What is anti-Semitism? It explains how the failure to define anti-Semitism properly has exacerbated regulatory paralysis at a regulatory agency responsible for combating it. It explores the various ways in which anti-Semitism has been defined, demonstrates the weaknesses in prior efforts, develops a new definition of anti-Semitism, and explain the implications for efforts to combat this problem.

Abstract: This title examines the causes, forms, and experiences of urban violence in the Americas. It does so through a series of theoretically informed ethnographic analyses of the role that violence plays in the lives of the urban poor in South, Central, and North America. It pays particular attention to the role gangs, illicit drugs, and state responses to drug-dealing play in sky-rocketing levels of violence, and to the responses ravaged communities devise to deal with them.

Abstract: The 2012 Toulouse and Montauban shootings and the grisly murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich in 2013 are stark reminders of the terrorist threat posed by militant Islamist extremism in Europe. While the death of Osama bin Laden and the advent of the 'Arab Spring' fed expectations that international jihadism was a spent force, Europe has faced an increase in terrorist plots over the past few years. In addition, there are growing security concerns over the fallout of the Syrian conflict, and its sizeable contingents of battle-hardened European fighters. This book provides a comprehensive account of the rise of jihadist militancy in Europe and offers a detailed background for understanding the current and future threat. Based on a wide range of new primary sources, it traces the phenomenon back to the late 1980s, and the formation of jihadist support networks in Europe in the early 1990s. Combining analytical rigor with empirical richness, the book offers a comprehensive account of patterns of terrorist cell formation and plots between 1995 and 2012. In contrast to existing research which has emphasised social explanations, failed immigration and homegrown radicalism, this book highlights the entrepreneurial role of former Arab-Afghan veterans and their associated organisations and ideological agendas
